For me, I think a weekly extended fast (e.g., 36 to 48 hours) would be easier than doing daily IF. I'd rather not focus much on my daily eating schedule and try to let my body tell me when to eat more than the clock. However, I think IF is great for most normal people whose life is more scheduled than mine!

Regarding non-water additions to fasts, arguments have been made that certain ones (e.g., coffee, teas, ACV, lemon or lime juice, certain spices) provide additional benefits. I'm still looking for arguments in favor of stevia though. emoticon So far, the best one is that it makes me happier! emoticon

I am a big fan of fasting - although it's not easy for me.

I generally do 19/4 - eating between 1 and 6 but not on weekends. I eat regular keto then.

This week I'm trying to do 23/1 on MWF and 18/6 on TTh. Sometimes a little bit of fasting breaks through a weight plateau. I'm STILL trying to get under 145.

I believe the benefits come from letting your body repair itself while there are no digestive processes going on. To that end - I do a water/black coffee fast only, but I would certainly not tell anyone else how to do theirs. I think perhaps you get most of the same benefits if you are doing coconut oil/stevia/chia seeds, but not all of them since your body still has to do some kind of digestion with calories and/or sweetener, which usually raises insulin somewhat since the body thinks something sweet is happening.

And fasting is definitely a cancer preventing agent, according to Dr. Thomas Seyfried. I have yet to do more than 3 days, and usually just 24 hours is the max I like to go.

I ended my fast with sardines in olive oil and sauerkraut, with no tummy aches. emoticon

I think I may find doing periodic extended fasts easier than doing a 16+ hour fast every day, in part due to my variable sleep and activity schedule.

FABFIT, I checked out a little bit of the two youtubers you mentioned. Mr. Robinson seems like a very unpleasant fellow! His "snake juice" is very similar to what I've been drinking since going keto, except I use cream of tartar instead of "no salt", and lime juice instead of lemon juiceÖ.and I add them to iced tea instead of plain water. [I usually have just one cup of coffee each day.] I haven't been as careful about my electrolyte dosages as he is though, so I think I can learn from his example. Thanks.

Sounds like youíre doing great on your first fasting attempt! Yes, Iím a big fan of Dr Fungs...but I do love my liquid stevia as well. Iíve been IF 16:8 off & on for about a year. I did a 65 hr fast last January. Once I have been Keto this time for 7-10 days, I want to begin Fasting as well. Iíd like to build up to dr Fungs 42 hr fasts 3 times per week, then up to 7 days, but so far only in my mind. Iím used to IF, so once Iím fat adapted again it should be fairly easy...just a matter of doing it and getting a routine down. Iím with you though, and do like DeLauers YouTubeís. Iím going to keep using some stevia with lemon juice & ACV during my fasting. Let me know how it goes!

Some interesting fasting Youtubers are:
Scott the Truck driver (mild foul language). Years of self experiments & insightful researcher.
Cole Robinson (Snake Diet). (Very foul language, but informative)

Thanks for the encouragement and egg advice! The eggs were store-bought, Vital Farms brand, so I'm pretty sure they were already washed before being packaged. I do not plan to fast more than another day or so anyway. I don't want to worry about refeeding issues after my very first extended fat.

I hope all is well with your cancer. I've read somewhere that nutritional ketosis may help starve some cancers that prefer glucose for fuel.

Sounds good!

As for the expensive eggs, they should last 4-6 weeks in the fridge IF you DO NOT WASH them from the farmer or wherever you get your eggs. Turns out that "dirt" is protective from any germs and such in the refrigerator... Wash them just before you actually use them, because they will spoil FAST once that protective covering is off.

Another option is to freeze the eggs. I don't remember the exact details but there are gobs of blogs online discussing several methods. Most involve carefully cracking an egg, yolk and white together, into a freezer bag, one on top of the other. Don't stir them. Then freeze. When you need them, thaw them, and the eggs should pour out, one unit at a time. There's variations on that, depending on what you plan to use the eggs for when they are thawed (like a person cooking just for themselves, or a person who needs to thaw and use a lot of eggs like for a family or for doing some baking.).

We also hard cook (hard boil) eggs and leave them in the shell, and they generally last 2 weeks or more, I believe? We eat them too fast for them to go bad, so I don't really remember. My husband doesn't fast with me, so he takes care of eating them before they go bad. He loves to take one or two to the office and he has a little protein bomb to eat every 3-4 hours as needed.

Hope your fast goes well. I've never tried a long fast with the coffee etc. I ended up fasting 3 weeks on a water fast, because my body just couldn't handle anything more after my 3rd round of chemo... soo.... it was kinda rough in places. I wouldn't wish that off on my worse enemy!! Please don't feel like I'm trying to one up - because I am not!! I should have fasted the easier way keto style before I found out about me having cancer (since being overweight is one of the contributing causes of cancer...although...plenty of thin or healthy looking people also have cancer - like I said "contributing causes", no one single smoking bullet causes cancer.). So I hope this goes really well for you and do some reading on how to come off a fast - plenty of broths or light vegetables, water, etc. Don't go straight into the bacon and fat right after a fast!!

I'm proud to report I am now on the 41st hour of my first attempt to fast (for more than 24 hrs). Yesterday, I had about 200 calories of fat (fish oil capsules and coconut oil with my coffee) but no stevia or artificial sweeteners as recommended by Dr. Jason Fung. I also had a bit of lime juice squeezed into my water.

However, I'm not really a fan of adding fat to my coffee, and I miss my stevia. Plus, it did not make sense to me that Dr. Fung permits his fasting patients to consume bone broth, chia seeds, and heavy cream while being so strict about sweeteners. So I found a new youtube guru! Thomas DeLauer says a bit of stevia in your coffee and lemon/lime juice in your water is fine, but stay away from bone broth, cream, chia seeds, etc. This is what I've done on day two of my fast. I am planning to break my fast when my body sends me signals to do so...or before the expensive eggs from pasture-raised chickens in my fridge go bad!!!

Before I began my keto diet, the idea that I could voluntarily fast for 24 hours or more was unimaginable! However, I have felt quite energetic during this fast with only very mild and manageable hunger pangs. The only side effect has been that I had trouble falling asleep, so I stayed up until I got tired around 5am! I'm sure part of my insomnia was due to excitement about my fasting accomplishment. I am more optimistic than ever about being able to reach my weight loss goal.

Here are a few of the youtube vidoes that motivated and helped me to fast:
