I love avocados but they are high in carbs. I had been eating a half avocado every morning with my breakfast because they are really healthy. I needed to lower my daily carbs because weight loss had stopped. So now I only eat a 1/4 avocado once a week and my weigh loss is back on track.
I buy a dozen of them bright green when on sale and keep them in the refrigerator. I just leave two out to ripen. They last for weeks in the cold refrigerator.

I cheat and buy the small guacamole packs! (:

Take a look at the recipe. If it calls for mashing or mixing the avocado (or just use it on the side), see if you can use a guacamole packet instead! Otherwise, I'll skip the recipe. At least on the guacamole pack I have, it's 6g carbs per serving, 4g are fiber. Works for me!

Avocados ARE high in carbs, for sure!! Some times I just eat one and that's my carbs for the day. Especially since it's also high in healthy fats, usually that's more than enough satiety for me for the entire day - especially in salads or other low fat food that is high in fibers like low carb "above ground" veggies.

I try to buy avocados at stores where I can pick out each of them seperately, and try to get some that are brick-hard "green" and others that are "softer"/darker. Places like Sam's or Costco - yea, you're stuck with those bags of 5 or 6 but there, you could immediately put one or two in a warm area in a brown bag to get the gas thing going (ethylene)... or apples:

thanks Kristy!! i actually own a bakery and catering service. i never thought i could do it...but i went totally strict from day one. i've fought my weight and feeling like crap all my life..i did it for the health not the weight loss, and the weight loss happened..132 pounds. i never ever EVER wanted to taste anything...i have to..tiny, tiny tastes, and i hate it. but i've never once been tempted. which is amazing to me as i was the carb queen..and buttercream ruled my world.

now i sell a keto line through the bakery, and that really helps on the rare occasion i want something sweet..which isnt often!

sure..do you want to see mine or would you like us to look at yours?

mines easy..i have bacon and eggs for breakfast, cooked in the bacon fat and some butter..2 eggs 2 strips of bacon..and sometimes i add some cheese. OR i have cream cheese waffles and bacon

lunch i have meat and cheese..either beef sticks from aldi, or whatever meat i have around, or pepperoni. mostly sharp cheese.

supper i have whatever meat, and a small romaine or spinach salad with olive oil and vinegar. sometimes for supper i'll have a piece of my quiche, or some zucchini spaghetti and meatballs with a really light tomato/pesto/heavy cream sauce. i posted a recipe for mushroom soup the other day thats really good.
I add butter to about everything. having steak? i cook it in butter, then put a teaspoon or 2 of butter on the side and have a small bit of that on the fork with each bite of meat.

I dont drink coffee..i do have tea if its cold out..but i dont put anything in it. once in a great while i'll make a dessert out of cream cheese and heavy whipping cream and some flavoring. very rare.

i dont snack..and had to change my total way of thinking about food from it being enjoyable to it being just fuel. its no longer social, or yummy, for me. its just something my body needs to keep going. and that was a really difficult shift for a professional chef.....but a necessary one.

thats true..there are still a lot out there that dont have the updated information. James has some really good research he's posted on it. The up to date experts all now say total carbs not net..but to me its personal choice. i just like everyone to be armed with the most current studies and findings..then they can choose.

The doc that came up with net carbs has recanted...publicly. said he was wrong, links the studies. just like your body doesnt know fruit sugar from table sugar, it doesnt know the carbs you are eating are fiber. if net is working for you...you are lucky!! wish it did for me!! it was one of the first things my coaches looked at and suggested when i hired them. broke a 3 month stall in 2 days going to total carbs.. '

that said...on the extremely rare occasion i go over 10 carbs a day (i know its 20...but i do better with 10) i go over with veg. and if i went up to even 25 with veg, i wouldnt freak out over it. i rarely go out to a restaurant, but thats where i'd do that..or on a holiday. but it would be rare indeed...

I guess it depends on which nutritionist you listen to. I still deduct fiber, but only 50% of sugar alcohols over 5g.

Kristy the "net carb" thing has been debunked. its up to the individual whether they use each food or not, but its best to go in armed with the latest information on it. i know many, many people who were stalled for ages, and found that it was the amount of avocado they were eating. a carb is a carb is a carb.
They are, if you like them, absolutely part of a keto diet, in great moderation (like nuts, my downfall..i love them and have a very hard time stopping at a quarter cup.)

Avocados are considered a super fruit for a reason. On Keto, they are invaluable! I try to have a half of an avocado minimum daily. The high fiber content offsets the carbs somewhat. The fat content helps my daily totals. The heart benefits, blood sugar benefits and the potassium and magnesium content are all properties I really need right now. It helps that I absolutely LOVE them!

I want to add..i just looked them up. there are 17 grams of carb in ONE avocado..3 carbs shy of a full days worth...so if you do choose to eat them, be aware of this!

any one have any tricks for staggering avacado ripeness . I was told if you put it in a bag with a apple it would ripen faster but it didnt work for me and if you put it the fridge it doesn't ripen properly Trying to eat 1 per day . Usually i buy 5 in a pack .
