Hoffard...trust me when i started i felt like you.
I have done that with every diet i've ever been on. if i didnt lose i almost was in a panic. here i was depriving myself of what i loved to eat, not losing, miserable, and that was the jump off spot. I'd quit. and gain more.
keto, somehow, was different. i truly didnt expect it to work. i didnt think eating all that fat was going to let me lose..i actually laughed at the thought..and worried that in my 3 week experiment i was going to have a heart attack.
and then i started..and all of a sudden losing weight didnt matter..because i felt better. i finally ditched the scale, because it just wasnt important any more.
one day i woke up and seriously i called the doc...something was wrong. (i have some very severe life threatening medical issues and my doc will see me on a seconds notice)
i went in right away...and sat on the gurney shaking, scared to death this was it..what had i done..omg omg...
and she came in sat down. All my vitals were fine. she looked a little sideways at me and said hmm...you actually LOOK good. describe whats happening. and i couldnt. every time i opened my mouth i couldnt think of what it was..it was just different, and scary.
they did an ekg. nope heart in perfect rhythm. no problem there...no svt. no pvcs. no afib. none of the usual. she said pain level? i opened my mouth to give her the usual 7 or 8....and nothing came out. I thought about it...still..nothing. She said..and i quote..OH. MY. GOD. your pain is better and you have NO clue how it feels to not hurt.
She said get up. walk for me. So i did. Holly..you aren't limping. how much of the pain meds have you taken today. Zero. zip. nada.
THATS what keto does. its NOT about the weight loss. its about healing. No the total pain problem will never resolve. but i've cut my pain meds easily in HALF. and trust me, thats HUGE. my cardiologist is totally amazed at the improvement. My GP is also.
People go on keto thinking its a fast weight loss program..its not. everyone i know that is on keto has big hills and valleys in their weight charts.
And dont think i'm exempt from feeling that way, too..i remember my first gain, 4 weeks in. i was down about 30 pounds. and all of a sudden i got up and was up 10. TEN!!! it was near christmas. i had said no to all my favorites. stuck to keto like glue. totally strict. and i GAINED TEN POUNDS in a week!!! I called my son in tears...he said hang on. got his then fiancee who was on it with him (and lost 70 pounds with it)
she immediately texted me her weight graph. up and down and up and down. but a general downward trend.
Her words always helped me through the ups. "your body is changing. you are changing it. but every time it changes it needs a little time to get used to that change. to test. to see whats up. to hang on to every last cell and morsel for a few days before it says yeah shes still taking care of me"
again, trust me. I'd like to lose the last 20 I think i want to lose. its not going anywhere so far. maybe my body knows best.
if you are having surgery, the REALLY important thing is that your body is healthy and properly fueled. its going to have important healing to do, and you dont want to go in depleted. I would ask your doctors opinion on what you should be fueling with now, before the surgery.

I just hope to lose something every week. This week I didn't - but I only weigh on Sundays, and yesterday (Saturday) I went walking with friends. We did over 6 miles, and much of it was hilly. I'm so sore today, and I expect my 1 pound gain for the week is due to inflammation in my muscles from all the exercise (which is good) that I did yesterday.

Keto is also fixing my body, so while I didn't lose scale weight, hopefully I displaced some fat with muscle/bone density and next week I'll continue the losing.

I still have 25 pounds to lose, and I've lost a little over 20 since January. A snail's pace. But I'll take it.

My personal weight loss expectations, when I'm actually trying to loose weight are about 1/2 a pound a week, and I'm happy with that.

HOFFARD1959,
since you are already in ketosis (as you've written), the only thing to be lost between now and August 15 is body fat. Even at two and a half pounds a week (which is one heck of a pace) that is about five more pounds down between now and surgery.

Best wishes on your surgery, and stay strong and healthy for your surgery too.

The acronym CICO is Calories In Calories Out. According to CICO your body acts like a mathematical machine, extracting energy from food, about 9 calories per gram of fat, and 4 for either protein or carbs. A pound of body fat stores 3500 calories, and you can try to figure out how much various exercises burn.

The problem is the body is not a machine. Like money, when people have a lot they are often wasteful, when they have a little they suddenly buy the same things on sale, or buy generic products, or ... and make the dollars stretch. The body is the same when it comes to calories. Cut very low and the body will change its behaviour, like loose less in body heat by changing blood flow patterns. Who knows what the body can do to be more efficient, but plenty.

Thank you Holly.

I knew you would feel this way. What is Cico? And I didn't get the whole story about your son. Did he have rapid weight loss?

I dont have any loss expectations. With small lifestyle changes like adding yoga and starting keto, I am hoping to bring my body into balance.

please note..my son was 29. So very young and age and metabolism on his side. he had never been on any diet..so never cut calories and starved himself wrecking his metabolism. hes also a hiker..and does miles a day. all those things allowed him to lose, and lose quickly.

for me, i am doing this for my health. I have no loss expectations..any loss is a good thing to me.

Hoffard....noone can tell you how to do it, but I think you may have unreasonable expectations. Stressing can actually stall loss...if i was to have advice it would be to just keep yourself eating where you know you should be. overexercising is another stall reason....and if you arent eating enough your body will cling to every morsel. i did the same thing and couldnt figure out why i wasnt losing on 6-800 cals. Cico does NOT work, and will make it harder to lose anything in the long run. Again your choice ---but i think enough of us have had it happen to know its true, whether we like it or not.

Hi Everyone,

My expectations are high! I want 2-3 lbs/week. When I'm not getting that, I keep cutting calories down to the bare bones. I need to lose a lot for surgery on August 15, so slow loss is not an option at this point. I know you will all tell me not to cut calories, but I feel like I have to! I'm in strong ketosis and I'm exercising like crazy, so I feel like I should be having more success! My macros are good except that I undercut on the calories.

I don't expect this rate forever, but I need it now!

First of all Keto was initially planned to be a diet to help epilepsy patients, back in the 1920's.

What about weight loss? What are your expectations? In the first week or so of cutting the carb you use up stored carbs, stored as glycogen in your muscles and liver. This is a big water loss, typically about 5 pounds of water loss.

So if anyone "poo-poo's" Keto as just being water loss, well its not just water loss there is more. In addition, you might loose about 2 pounds of body fat per week, at least at the start. One's body chemistry is probably so carb oriented that it is inefficient at burning body fat.

After a great week 1, probably 4 or 5 pounds, and a slightly slower week 2, probably 3 pounds you go "hurray!" 7 pounds in two weeks, this will keep up and in four months I'll be down 60 pounds. Then week 3 hits, and you've only lost 1 pound more despite all the "hard" work.

Weight loss may slow, but it is better than no weight loss. It is also a healthy way to eat. If your weight loss doesn't slow, and one of your major goals is weight loss, ... well all the better. It looks like one of Holly's sons lost 90 pounds in 9 months.

One of the things I find interesting about Keto (being a "numbers" guy) is that by cutting out sugar, and carbs in general, you are cutting calories that are pretty empty of nutrients. The meat and veggies left are nutrient dense in this sense. Also blood sugar and hunger and energy levels are much more even.

So what are you expectations?
