ok its way easier if you forget the macro thing...all that figuring made me dizzy. suggested by most experts now is easier:

less than 20 carbs a day, preferably total not net
less than 60 grams of protein a day for a woman, unless you are a super athlete then less than 75
the rest of your calories from fat, but AT LEAST double your protein..so, if you were to have 50 grams of protein you want 100 or more grams of fat.

that made it FAR easier for me, plus it worked. i didnt have to do percentages (using the above, the percentages pretty much fall in recommended)

On the water weight thing..my heart broke a little with your "friend" comment. I got the same thing. i'd be all excited that i had that really encouraging big burst the first week or 2. then someone would try to pop my balloon...well of course..its just water. So, i just didnt tell ANYONE. with keto? i told noone i was on it but my son that turned me on to keto. noone. thanksgiving rolled around and i didnt say a word, quietly filled my plate with keto food and nothing else, and because i said nothing noone even noticed..till the pie..and then i said oh no thanks i'm so stuffed from supper..i'll have some later. that worked too.
When i saw them all at christmas, and i was down 40 pounds...people were like..WOW..what are you doing? and i said oh, nothing..just eating regular food..guess its stress...
and then when we all got together again and i was down 60 and they really noticed..only then did i say anything. As expected i was met with.."thats not healthy!!" and oh but you CANT!! but by then it was so ingrained and i felt so good, nothing, no words, no disbelief was going to stop me.

BEACH_DREAMER,
who knows about your insomnia ... perhaps a change in diet will change that, I doubt it, but who knows.

I had a colleage who fell asleep after lunch almost every day. I wonder now if that was the carbs, and nothing else.

One thing on the initial "water weight", ... it is no reason to stop eating Keto because that was "only water weight", loosing that water weight (which is related to stored carbs in glycogen) is a necessary step to making burning fat much easier, with less hunger and more even energy.

So just keep going!

HOLLY: Thanks for your encouraging words of wisdom. I rationalized the "water weight" because it was stuck in my brain (from not-so-well-meaning "friends") during past weight loss attempts. I will try to lose that attitude.

JAMES & KAREN: Insomnia has been in my life for the past 10 or more years. Sleep an hour or two; be awake 45 minutes to an hour or so - was my cycle. Now it's sleep an hour and wake up for 15 to 30 minutes or so.

KAREN: As for reaching my macro limits; I fall short in all categories but carbs. I am very low on protein and fats, moderately low on caleries; moderate to achieving my carbs. Lotsa water. I don't know how to even out my intake to where it should be.

Open to suggestion from you learned Ketonians though.

BEACH I agree with James. I slept very lightly in the beginning, now my 8 regular hours. And wake refreshed.

Another thing I didn't do early on that I wished I had done - track your food and get your macros sort of in line. You don't have to be super strict, but I wasn't even close in the beginning. It took me awhile before I transitioned into being a fat burner rather than a sugar burner, but I could tell right away when it happened. I didn't worry about food any more.

You can do it!

BEACH_DREAMER,
great to make it through week 1, finding alternate things to satisfy cravings.

If your sleep is disruptive, take note that in the early weeks of Keto that is a potential side effect. I slept very lightly in the first 2 weeks, and didn't know why. It was like sleep for 5 hours, dream a lot, wake up and not go back to sleep. It is sign number 10 here:

and-symptoms-of-ketosis

Fortunately after a few weeks my normal sleep patterns returned.

who cares if its water weight? you were still carrying it..dont downplay it rejoice in it!!
some people take a month to get into ketosis. just keep doing what you are doing it will happen when your body is ready! its not a race..try not to compare to other peoples losses, time rames, etc (and i know how hard that is!!) I know i had a lot of healing to do in my body...so some things took me way longer to do than i expected..

I know that the big loss in week one is not an unusual occurence and a lot of water weight accounts for this. Regardless, it is encouraging.

I need to thank each of you for the encouragement you give. That helps keep us going, yes?
JAMES: I have had my moment of weakness but found a way through it - simply by finding a recipe that satisfied my sweet tooth without screwing up my macros.

Energy levels have increased, sleep is still very disruptive and I fear that may never change LOL.

Looking forward to the end of week 2.

How long for ketosis to begin? I checked today and am registering just a trace amount of ketones. I that about right for the end of week one?

That's awesome. I'm starting week three. I lost 8 the first week. Three the second week. As long as its going down, I'm happy!

Good work. Is it getting easier? It is for me.

that big drop means a few thing. It means you've really changed what you are eating. Trust me, any "cheating" and it wouldn't be that loss.

Secondly, a whole week is the absolute hardest part. If you had moment of weakness, and made it through, the good news is that in the future the pull of carbs is normally greatly diminished. It is never as hard as week 1.

Third, around now you will fine your energy is more even. A great great step!

CONGRATULATIONS!

James

Awesome!! Hope that happens again next week! but don't be surprised if it doesn't. Slow and steady wins the race.
