I don't like a monthly end of the daily chat in case in "conversations" are disturbed mid stream.
On the other hand I don't like huge discussions that go on and on and later on you want to find a post that happened in some month, but it is too difficult to find that month in the one huge never-ending chat.

Holly I sweat enough for both of us. I put 10 miles on my elliptical and my shirt and sport bra are both completely wet. I can see if I didn't sweat for a day I would gain 10 pounds. Stay cool!

HICIM, What are the 5% challenges?

Holly, I am a Florida girl. We adjust our lives around the oppressive heat down here. NY should be lovely about now! I hope the heat wave passes quickly! Its been cloudy and rainy around here.

I made homemade yogurt using whipping cream an half and half. Its to die for! Its SO yummy! I put about three large blackberries and chopped pecans in a little bowl of it for breakfast. It was great! My instant pot has been great for steaming cauliflower, asparagus, and making meat extra tender and now... I can make yogurt! I will definitely make it again!

Have a great day, Teammates!

Back from deliveries. Glad thats done.going to let lucy out for a short time then go swim!!

holidays are never a problem for me. i take a dish i can have, then have burgers and doggers..no bun. or chicken and ask for them to not sauce one piece. pretty easy!

Happy Canada Day...since i'm on the border all the radio stations i get are eitther montreal or cornwall..so there are bargains galore..if it wasnt so hot I might go the 15 mins to the stores there..lol. but its is, so i'm not!

Yes Holly we are sharing that same scorching heat as I am not that far from your area.

I also do not drink often. Maybe one every 6 months. I hits a lot harder when dieting and I don't like that feeling. So I really don't need it.

Keeping a close watch on my carbs and planning ahead of time what I will eat each day. This should work out better.

Our upcoming holiday (July 4th) will not be a problem. We will be going to a huge outdoor flea market with antiques and all crafts on the 4th. Lots of walking and mostly liquids as we walk all day.

CANADIANS enjoy your long weekend.

Hi all..quick post as i have to deliver a HUGE cake an hour and a half away,...and its HOT..good thing i got the van a.c fixed. i'm sure i've mentioned i LOVE winter, fall, early spring..snow, cold, etc..and hate, detest, ABHOR heat. I'm worried for my dog,,,who has a severe cardiac condition..shes out right now for half an hour but then will be in the a/c till i return, and probably the afternoon, too.
i will get in the pool later..worked 3 hours yesterday on it. still not clear but getting there. plenty safe to swim in, blue and beautiful so no worries there.
on the drinks, Heidi..just be mega careful. you are early enough it may not effect you, but ONE small drink puts me under the table now..and this is the girl that could polish off a 5th of JD, still be upright, and noone knew. (and no, i'm not proud of those days..it was stupid and i'm glad i grew up and stopped!) EVERYONE knows now if i have even one small drink. so, i've pretty much decided to not, i think i've had 3 drinks in the past year.
Sadie just wanted to say quick kudos...you are my hero..you did it!! made it to goal and are reaping the rewards...i'm so proud of you!!!
had my first weigh in for the 5% challenge this morning...with this heat i'm swollen up like a balloon. I dont sweat (most likely why i hate the heat so much) so when it gets hot, i drink more, and it has no place to go..so i gain. yesterday, before the heat started, i was 7 pounds less than today (i was going to do my weigh in yesterday then thought better of it and glad i did.because the heat is going to last at least a week)
anyhow...i'm at my highest weight this year, this morning..not stressing as i know why..and theres not a thing i can do about it but wait it out.
Hope everyone else in this mess has a way to keep cool...i will have to force myself to eat as i hate having anything when its this bad (we are supposed to hit 100 tomorrow and monday..unheard of for here..we usually have maybe 2 days it this 90 all year...so this is hard for anyone here to get used to)
have a great Saturday!

Sadie (SADIEMYERS),
I'm glad you new doctor is OK with your eating Keto.

My take on the various blood numbers is that eating Keto is healthier than the standard high carb diet. Yes one might not have cholesterol numbers that are in some sense ideal, however I'll bet your LDL is down now.

But I compare that to eating what I think of as high carbs, and this elevates blood sugar all the time. The body recovers (using insulin) within a few hours. Those blood tests for glucose levels are typicallaly morning fasting, and you don't see the spikes in the test. Of course A1c test is another thing, its a fading average.

But all in all, I think a lot of folks just eat, don't get blood tests done because nothing has gone critically bad, and aren't aware of what is going on inside of themselves.

Good Morning, All!

So DH and I stopped at the VFW last night and stayed ... wish I would have read the stuff that @-JAMES- said before I went! I did have a vodka/cranberry (I knew that the cranberry was a no-no, but - like I said, it is my drink of choice). The picnic today is canceled, but we may stop there later anyway to get out of the extreme heat that they are predicting. Several members are getting together to socialize late this afternoon, anyway. I'll stay away from the cranberry juice and keep my drinks to ONE (if any).

Thanks @KATHLEEN624 - I would rather not have any than mixed with a diet anything. I just don't care for the taste of diet sodas (even though people swear they can't taste that they are diet).

I also taste coconut (no matter how I've tried coconut flour) ~ don't like it, probably never will.

Well, I have to get ready for rehearsal this morning. So I hope that you all have a WONDERFUL Satuday and an even better weekend! I'll check in again later on.

Thank you all for your suggestions on lowering my carbs. I thought the same too many veggies and nuts. ANd my carbs should be a lot lower.

HEIDI - I don't usually drink alcohol but when I do I have a Vodka and Diet Tonic water. That is a ZERO carb drink.

Heidi (HICIM705),
the body burns calorie sources roughly like this:
- alcohol, burn it first, it is a poison, so get rid of it.
- carbs, burn it second, as high blood sugar is bad, not as bad as poison, but not good
- protein, burn excess protein third (I say excess because you need 50 to 60 grams for structure)
- fat, burn this last

So assuming carbs are super low, and protein is "just enough", then drinking pure alcohol does not impact blood sugar and all the rest of it, but delays burning body fat, or other fat.

So drinking alcohol has its consequences, but from a Ketosis point of view he purer the better. Maybe with sparkling water rand a squirt of lemon. You are right about the beer. Too many carbs.

Kathleen,
I would look at your food logs and identify where your carbs are coming from. Different people have different food priorities so I won't tell you what to eliminate. However I know when my carbs tend to creep up it's when I'm eating too many vegetables and nuts. So then I reduce my consumption of those. I choose to eat the veggies that are lowest in carbs, spinach, olives, cabbage, mushrooms, to help. Except avocado, but I work it into my meals since I'm super low carb on other things. I dont use coconut flour or almond flour because it will add too many carbs to my day. My carbs come from dairy, veggies or nuts. 20 to 25 carbs per day for me right now.

Kathleen, I usually stay at 20 or under. I tend not to eat breakfast, if I do it's an egg and a couple of pieces of bacon. Lunch is almost always a salad with chicken or venison, whatever meat we had the night before. Dinner is typically a serving of protein and a cup of vegetables. We are pretty simple and easy. Once in awhile we make a recipe of some kind but most of the time just meat and veg. My husband likes to experiment with sauces for the meat, usually a butter or cream cheese sauce. I try not to snack but when I do it's nuts or bacon.

emoticon DH and I are going to a picnic at our local VFW tomorrow. I do plan to make sure that I eat some of the 'right things' ~ but if I decided to have an alcoholic drink, what do you all recommend. I know that beer is out and I'm sure that wine is not a great choice. How about a vodka drink?

If I could do that ... what could I mix the vodka with? Again, I really plan to have water, etc. ~ just think that I would like to have a Keto(ish) option.

Been busy here and sounds like everyone else has too. I have been reading without much time to respond. Welcome to all the new folks!

Saw my new doctor yesterday, he was very polite. Keto was a non issue. He has my medical chart since he replaced my doctor that moved away. He was impressed that I have lost 30 pounds since my visit last year. He ordered lab work I had done this morning. He said my LDL cholesterol was a bit high last year (I was not keto then) and he would like it to be under 100. He assumes it will be this time with my weight loss and keto diet. We shall see soon enough. Since I struggle with genetics when it comes to cholesterol numbers I'm a bit nervous for the lab results.

I try for 30 but sometimes its a struggle to keep them low.

JANE you are doing a fantastic job on KETO! That's a good A1C number.

Well, the month of June is almost over and I didn't lose as much as I had hoped. Lost just 2 pounds.

I know what I am doing wrong. I am not consistent with the carb counts each day. Some days I am high ( 50 ) some days I am low (20) I have already started to correct this. I need to eat less vegetables and no nuts. I need more protein. I know we should eat moderate protein but I need to getthe scale moving again.

So July should show a more significant weight loss on the scale for me.

Thanks James. Yes, I am Type 2 diabetic. I was never on insulin and only took Metformin until now. I have been in contact with my doctor frequently since starting Keto and she has been involved with the process with me. She knows I have stopped taking Metformin and is fine with it as long as my blood sugars are stable, which they are. My last A1C was 6.1 in Feb only 1 month into Keto, I go back next month. I have lost 42 lbs so far since January and feel so much better. I'm not sure what has been causing my stomach problems other than just gut bacteria out of whack from the Metformin. The probiotics seem to be working, I am slowly getting better every day.

Subject: Metformin, food and blood sugar

BLH507,
if you doctor gave you a prescription for metformin I can only guess that it is to lower blood sugar. Are you a type-2 diabetic?

Eating Keto really helps control blood sugar for type-2 diabetics, in my experience more than metformin ever could. Indeed if you stop eating excess carbs metformin might not be needed because what metformin does is make existing insulin more effective, but when eating Keto there is less need for insulin and existing insulin might be enough anyways.

Its true that a number of people have digestive problems with metformin. Are you aware that the half life of metformin is 6 hours? So if you took some it would be at 1/2 strength six ours later, 1/4 strength twelve hours later, then 1/8 and a day later 1/16, so virtually gone.

Do you take you blood sugar about one hour after eating? That is typically when blood sugar spikes after a meal, and you'd know best if metformin makes a difference, or not.

The second biggest contributor to higher blood sugar is excess body fat. Initially, typically one keeps blood sugar under control with the help of insulin. Insulin helps get excess carbs out of the blood, but into body fat. At some point one becomes "insulin resistant", and usually that means that fat storage has been over taxed. If you are loosing body fat, then chances are metformin isn't helping much, as excess dietary carbs aren't the issue.

emoticon Good Morning, Everyone! Just wanted to stop by and say 'hi'. Not much time on here this morning, but I did quickly 'skim the posts'.

emoticon Thanks for the information/help, everyone! I'll check it out more in depth tonight. I've had rehearsals 2x/week and, when I get home, I don't want to do much except get changed and relax. No rehearsal tonight ... so, I may check these sites out.

@NIGHTSKYSTAR ~ I would LOVE it if you would look at what I've been eating/logging. Maybe I'll send you a SM tonight (once I try to put what I ate last night into the tracker). DH made ground beef (80/20) mixed with some (few) peppers and onions and then some spices. I had about a cup(ish) for dinner ~ maybe 1.5 cups, that's it. ~ He calls this concoction: 'Beef - I Don't Know' - LOL. I have to try to figure out the nutritional value(ish) of this and add it to my tracker for last night.

I did start losing, but have gained a little back. This week (since Sunday), I only lost a little over a pound.

CC: Sorry guys, I have been M.I.A. I have been dealing with some "ahem" digestive issues. Ugh. I think it started with Metformin, which I stopped and so did the problem until the doctor put me on Meloxicam for my arthritic toe and a few days later I started having problems again. I stopped that medication and now I am on Dr Perlmutter's probiotic and bone broth and calm foods to try and fix it before my vacation! A little better today so far. I even ate some Siggi triple cream yogurt yesterday. I have managed to lose weight throughout and I'm only 1.5 lbs from my go on vacation goal. I have 2 weeks so I might make it.

I will try to catch up later when I get home.

Have a great evening!

NIGHTSKYSTAR,
I'm such a non-sexist kind of guy, I try to treat men and women the same as much as I can. I think you are right, we can't take it to the calorie level.

So having a look the average mens height in North America is 5 foot 9 inches, and for women 5 foot 3 inches. The ratio the weight of an ideal weight of a man of that height, to the ideal woman of that height, is about 1.23, lets say 25% more.

So all with that adjustment men should eat about 25% more than women. Yup, as I search the internet that seems to be about it. Sooooo.....

For women on Keto 20 grams or less, and for men ... 24 or less, ... wow, I'm OK!

the numbers i use are for women, James!!

Heidi..I totally agree with James. you dont want to be at a deficit..you might lose at first then your body sees it as starving and you will stall and its really hard to get going again (dont ask me how i know this..but..i know this, unfortunately. wish the studies had been printed before i tried the old cal in cal out (cico) way of thinking)
I have a calculator if you want it..let me know and i'll send you the link!

HICIM705 (Heidi),
that sounds like you are running out of stored carbs. One has about a 2 to 3 day supply, and then like a marathon runner you sort of "hit the wall".

You may feel weak, dizzy, and have a headache. Takes some extra water and salt for the headache and it should be gone in about 15 to 20 minutes, as fast as any medication, plus any medication isn't dealing with the real problem, which is hydration.

I doubt that too much protein is an issue at this point, though I don't know what you are eating. If you are feeling weak (from lack of carbs), eat something that is high fat.

P.S. 50 to 60 grams of protein is about 6 to 8 ounces of meat (across the whole day of course).

SCHUYLA,
something strange about that calculator. As ones weight goes down you'd think that such a calculator would calculate a need for fewer calories.

My philosophy is to eat for my ideal weight, not my current weight. If I eat for my current weight then I'm eating extra calories to support my extra body fat. I don't want to do that.

So if you use such a calculator, put in your ideal or target weight, and eat that. Slowly then you will head towards that weight (so the theory goes).

P.S. I agree with Holly's numbers, though my carbs tend to be 20 to 25.

First few days of Keto down. Carbs are not as low as I would like, I'm working on that ... but the protein seems to be where I'm getting my numbers all screwed up. I am losing, and this morning I didn't feel all that well (keto flu-ish?), but I'm concerned with too much protein.

its really easy...dont worry about the macro percentages. stick with this...

under 20 g total carbs per day
under 60 gms protein per day
the rest fat but at least double your protein, so 120 grams

eat the fatty stuff till you are satisfied. dont worry about cals..fat fills you up so unless you are used to eating thousands of cals a day you wont overdue. Dont worry about calories..i would say you are probably needing about 1800, but might be more or less depending on your height. but, seriously, you do not need to eat at a deficit to have keto be effective, in fact, they are doing more and more research showing if you do eat at a deficit you will most likely stall because your body thinks you are starving it.
I can link you to some good articles on it if you would like

I have a question. As my weight goes down how does this affect my macros? I have lost 4 lbs and it looks like my calorie intake is able to go up. I use an app called Stupid Simple Macros. As my weight goes down it increase my calories and adjusts my macros. I still have it at 5% Carbs, 70% Fats and 25% Protein. Do I stay with the same macros that it originally gave me or do I do what the app is suggesting?

Wanda, I usually make a cucumber salad when it will be outside for awhile. A simple recipe and a family favorite. It doesn't need a lot of dressing. Take out the seeds so it doesn't get watery.

4 cups of peeled and seeded cucumbers, sliced
8 Tablespoons of Wish Bone Italian dressing
salt & pepper

The whole bowl is only 19 carbs.

Quiche would work. Or the other day I made something you could do in the crockpot..cut up broccoli and cauliflower. Added mozzarella, extra sharp cheddar, Muenster, and Parmesan, some heavy cream, and cooked it all together. It was really good!!

Ideas please for a July 4 potluck Keto dish that would please all types of tastes. I'm drawing a blank!

Preferably something that can sit out for long periods of time or crockpot friendly.

Walking and heat were on the daily agenda for sure.
I stayed low carb when we ate at restaurants.
I ate ice cream, candy bars, chips and those evil Savannah, GA Pralines!
The extra small stomach gives me an advantage that I didn't eat a lot in one sitting.
I drank SF soda some, but mostly water.
Got right back on track when we got home.

My health coach was pleased with the fact that I was essentially a No-Gain vacation. I met the exercise goals that I had set, too. I just didn't meet my goal of low carb, but even though I didn't log my food and track calories, I believe that on a daily basis, my calorie totals were pretty reasonable...there again the advantage of the small stomach.

when i got back from disney and had done so well i did analyze it and came up with this...

1. we walked a LOT every day, and it was HOT. both of those things i'm sure had an effect.
2. restaurant meals are portioned. the desserts we tried were small. I tried to pick as keto compliant as i could. yes i had the bread and all, but i didnt go nuts and have lots.
3. i didnt snack.
4. 90% of the time i drank water as my only beverage. I think this was a BIG thing.
5. I stayed keto until i walked onto disney property.
6 i was right back on keto..with zero slips, the second i got on the bus back to the airport.

i think all those things really helped, and i'm betting you did many things without even thinking about it, as i did. isnt it wonderful!!

Thats great Wanda!

I'm betting it was a few things, and all of them due to your making good choices.

1. You probably tried to avoid heavy carbs
2. You probably picked healthier veggies
3. You moved (exercised or walked)
4. You didn't have the attitude that this was a vacation and anything goes.
5. ...

Very happy for you.

Oh Teresa GREAT job!! well done, you!! and the strips are accurate if they are dark, its when they arent showing any ketones that people panic..if you are deep in ketosis, and burning the ketones, many times they wont spill into your urine, so they dont show at all. if they are showing color that IS correct!!

Wanda...i'm so so happy for you!! When i went to disney last year i ate as i pleased. i figured i would have gained a ton..i mean i wasnt bad, i didnt snack, just ate the restaurant meals, and didnt eat for every meal. i was shocked to come home and find i'd only gained 4 pounds..and that plus another 20 was gone in a month...i think it was all the walking, and the really high heat. but i'll take it!!
You did GREAT...and i'm so proud of you!!

I was SHOCKED when I got on the scales this morning. Only gained 6 tenths of a pound! Woo Hoo! I guess all those carbs were walked off, because we sure did a lot of walking. When I was able, I also got into the hotel pools for some exercise. Having an extra small stomach helped, as even when I was eating carbs, I couldn't eat a lot.

Back into the MWF pool routine today. Also, since our outdoor pool is open for the summer, I started there this morning, as they have adults only exercise from 6 - 7 AM. That will give me a boost in exercise, so hopefully, that will also jump start losing weight again.

I'm motivated!

Hello Friends! I am back from the NC "Grandma Camp" babysitting adventure! I have not been on the team forum for close to 3 weeks! I did fairly well cooking for the family and staying on my keto food plan while I was in NC. At least for dinner... they ate whatever I cooked, even the kids! So all is good! I logged on this morning to see if I could find your pancake recipe, James! I'll have the grands at my house tonight and want to make them keto pancakes in the morning! Using ketone strips, I tested a nice dark mauve this morning... so I am proud of that. ( i know they're not perfectly accurate) I haven't tested in weeks. My latest experiment has been making full fat homemade yogurt, which I made yesterday. It turned out great. I just had some for breakfast. I made it in my Instant Pot which has been much fun to cook/play with! You guys have a wonderful day!

Hi Wanda!

You are in a very positive place. You knew what to eat on vacation, it just wasn't there. You know what to do now.

Compare that to many folks who feel at the mercy of food. You got this!

Hi all! I'm back and ready to get back on track! I did horrible while on vacation. I had good intentions, but.......

We traveled from Iowa through IL, IN, OH, PA, WV, VA, D,C,, DE MD, NC, SC, GA, TN, KY and back home. Over 3,300 miles. Saw lots of places, had lots of fun and ate way too many carbs. It was much more difficult than I thought it would be. We only ate 1 meal a day at a restaurant. I did ok when we ate at a restaurant. Every hotel breakfast offerings were horrid. Found myself eating bagels or English Muffins, as the sausage was nasty and I don't "do" eggs.I don't know how they could call that pork! I was ok when they had bacon which wasn't often. Through the daytime when we were touring, etc. it was all about grabbing snacks and eating while on the move. Some nights we were too tired to go anywhere, so we ordered hotel room delivery. Not good!!

Anyway, I meet with the health coach tomorrow and have gotten back on track today. I hope I can be back into Ketosis by the weekend. I hate to get on the scales in the morning, but I must face the truth! Wish me luck!!

tomatos...to be used in very great moderation in my mind.

so...when i make "spaghetti sauce" for my meatballs, i use either a can of san marzanos, olive oil, a clove of garlic and some fresh basil, and then measure it out and freeze it in quarter cup portions (a quarter cup of this is 4 total carbs.)
OR..i use the small either 6 or 8 ounce cans of hunts tomato basil garlic oregano sauce. a can is i think half or 2/3 cup. again, i take half the can and freeze the rest.

to either of the above i add a quarter cup or so of heavy cream. 2 tablespoons of Wildtree brand basil pesto, and some grated parmesan. it makes almost a vodka sauce...and it does me for 3-4 meals...so, the carbs are negligible. perhaps 2 per meal..and thats over what it really is..

if i'm at a restaurant and theres a salad with pieces of tomato i'll eat them, if its only 3 or 4 small pieces. 1 cherry or grape tomato cut up is all i'd have,.

and Heidi asked about the barbecue sauce. i look at it like a condiment, as ketchup. to brish on the meat while grilling. i cant imagine i would have more than 2 tablespoons on a piece of meat. so at the most 4 carbs. a huge treat for me...

MONTHONY,
so two tablespoons of regular Ketchup would be about 8 grams of carbs. Getting hard to fit into a Keto day, but the blue label version would be about 2 grams, and that can fit.

The difference in taste between regular ketchup and blue label isn't much. Yes the blue label is a little less sweet, but I prefer it that way. So many things taste over-sweet to me.

James, ha ha. I’m originally from the Midwest, and ketchup is definitely a staple. Two tablespoons would be enough, but I was a bit shocked at the carbs, so I haven’t been eating it. I even gave up my vitamins (gummies) because of the carbs and take another brand from a local company.

MONTHONY,
lets see, about 15 grams in a tablespoon, the low carb Ketchup, at 7% carbs means about one gram of carbs in that.

How many tablespoons were you thinking of?

Subject: Ketchup Kalculations (and tomatoes)

As always I look at the fraction of the weight that is carbs.

Heinz regular Ketchup (33%)
Heinz blue label (7%)
Horse Radish (20%)

Yes my horse radish lists sugar as an ingredient and it is high in carbs at 20%. But I put so little in my home made cocktail sauce, about 5 grams of it in a small batch of Ketchup, so that is an extra gram of carbs, and it makes enough cocktail sauce for my wife and I together, so really an extra 1/2 gram of carbs for just me. So that is no obstacle.

Now tomatoes themselves are about 4% carbs, and they have a lot of water, so in the end you may consider them to be effectively higher.

Holly (NIGHTSKYSTAR), what is your opinion on tomatoes?

Hi everyone! Thank you for all the congrats and happy anniversaries!

Ketchup: this is a staple at our house and when we're low I"m told we NEED more! LOL. I've not eaten ketchup since going sugar free, and it would be nice to have a little sometimes. I'll have to check out that blue label stuff. :)

Gluten free is hard to do. We have a tiny gluten free section in our grocery store we frequent, and when we go to Little Rock, there are more choices because they have a Whole Foods. However, none of the restaurants we've looked up are truly gluten free. Take Papa John's Pizza for example, they advertise a gluten free pizza crust, but they prep it in the same area they do the regular and bake it in the same pans... so it ends up NOT being gluten free. Most places around here are oblivious like that, thinking just don't order the bread, but if breaded foods are prepped and cooked in the same area as "gluten free" foods, those foods are no gluten free. We also have to read labels extensively.

We're also now watching what oils we eat and hubby texted me yesterday telling me we now have to make our own mayo... the gluten free one we've been buying is made with soybean oil. I think we'll be making a lot of our own sauces now.

I love putting horseradish in ketchup for cocktail sauce, haven't done that in ages partly due to not knowing about a sugar free ketchup, but also the inability to find a sugar free horseradish at our local grocery stores... but when we were in Little Rock last weekend, we found some! yay! now I'm going to get some of that ketchup and hopefully it's gluten free, too and we'll be having us some shrimp cocktail soon :) Of course, the shrimp scampi we've been making is pretty darn good.

On another subject... what can I do to break a stall? I'm 2 weeks at the same weight now despite staying within all my macro ranges. Any and all ideas are welcome. :)

Heidi, ketchup is a food group for me, too. There are so many carbs in one tbsp, that I decided to find a low carb, and how many times would I just have one Tbsp?

Renee, Happy Anniversary. It sounds like a perfect picnic. The stores in Portland, Oregon have entire sections of gluten free, and now they are adding Paleo and Keto.

James, thank you for the idea of adding horseradish to the ketchup. I love horseradish!

Holly, I will ask my stores to carry the sugar free ketchup. I love our New Seasons local grocery stores. Fred Meyer carries a line of products, called Simple Truth, that don’t have added chemicals and usually leave out the sugar. Fred Meyer also has peanut butter without sugar, which I know isn’t always on the Keto lists.

Shuyla, that sounds like great results in just a few days.

Holly, I prefer homemade sauces. It’s hard to give up Yoshida’s sauces though, but they have a lot of sugar. I do a great barbecue with that sauce. The Yoshida’s donate to my community college all the time, and sometimes donate $1,000,000.

Good Morning, All!!! I've been reading here and the 'Blue Label Heinz Ketchup' has me excited!!! I LOVE ketchup, to me it is a Food Group!!!

Holly - making your own BBQ sauce - ... I'm confused, thought tomatoes were basically a 'no-no', am I wrong?

Kathleen i do the same. i'm thinking of trying to make barbecue sauce. i do miss that!! starting with a base of tomato sauce, some lakanto, vinegar, spices. i know it wont be the same without molasses and maple and brown sugar, but i'm hoping that by using some flavorings i might come close.

I use that "blue label" Heinz Ketchup as a base for shrimp cocktail sauce. I add a tiny bit of horseradish, mix, ...tada, low carb cocktail sauce. Tastes as good as the store bought ones which have tons of sugar.

Actually I think it tastes better. The shrimp of course are zero carbs.

OHANAMAMA- Congratulations on your 32nd anniversary. Sometimes when plans don't work out you have a better time, like a fun picnic.

SCHUYLA- You're off to a great start. Don't forget to add some salt to your diet like pickles or chicken broth etc. The hardest part for me was during the first few weeks. After that it gets a lot easier. Do you take a magnesium supplement? I do and have found this helps a lot. Good luck!

That blue labeled Heinz ketchup is really good! I started making a lot of my own condiments.
I make my own sugar free salad dressings & marinades, dill pickles and some pickled vegetables. At least I know what I am eating that way.

So I am officially on Day 3 of my Keto Lifestyle. I started Saturday I went over on my carbs a little but not to bad. Sunday I stayed under my carbs for the day. I have officially lost 3 pounds since Friday. I'm so excited! Can't wait to see what happens in the next couple of weeks!
Thank you all for the advice and assistance!

OHANAMAMA,
congratulations on your 32-nd anniversary.

Good on finding gluten free things to eat too. Sounds like it was a nice picnic, ... you did find trees.

Gluten is a protein found in various grains (I don't think it comes from other sources). I know that wheat and other grains come in various places (cookies, pie crusts, bread ...) but I wasn't so aware that so many things had some gluten in them.

It was my 32nd anniversary Saturday. We went to an early movie then thought where in the hell could we go out to eat?... We are both keto, hubby must have gluten free, I have been gluten free with him, there is literally nowhere to go. The gluten free aspect makes it really hard here.

So, we went to a grocery store, and with extensive label reading and comparisons, bought some salmon that is wild caught and ready to eat, some sugar free salsa, some single serving guacamole cups, pork skins, single serving packs of "wholesome nuts" and water. We had a picnic in the shade under a bunch of trees in an empty parking lot. We drove all over looking for a park, but couldn't find one. We loved our "out to eat anniversary picnic lunch." :)

MONTHONY,
to find the sugar free Ketchup, it really helps to know that it is there, and what it looks like (more blue on the Heinz label). I've found it in a variety of grocery stores where I live in Canada. Though I shop at Walmart for groceries sometimes too, I'm not even sure if I've seen or bought it there. Probably.

Ditto on the blue label Heinz ketchup. It's in the same area as regular ketchup, and the label has more blue in it.

I love nuts, but I think they may cause me to stall. They do have a lot of carbs, but I usually weigh them, or I could eat too many. My weight loss has been extremely slow.
I found that so many things have carbs or chemicals. I found pickles that don't have any food dyes or other additives. I'm still looking for ketchup that doesn't have sugar. I know that it still has carbs, but I just count those in my total.

Rita,
its a learning journey. I used to like to eat cashews ... I guess I still do. Nuts, gotta be good on Keto. Then one day I look into the nutrition ...

Yikes, I don't eat mashed potatoes, and cashews have more carbs than mashed potatoes. By weight, twice as many carbs as the same weight of potatoes.

Oh, Rita that’s awful!! I have a great taco seasoning recipe if you’d like it..early on I got a recipe for a taco bake and it called for some measure of seasoning..I bought a packet—and read the label before I used it. It had sugar and flour..it’s still on my shelf to this day.
You’ve been doing wonderfully! Even with our best efforts this stuff happens. Hang in and glad you are feeling better now!

Ugh, I made my first big, unintentional mistake yesterday. I've been doing really well, total carbs between 20 and 25 every day. Sometimes too much protein. Trying really hard to get to TDEE. Common sense keto said 2500 cal per day. That's almost impossible for me. I've been feeling great, though.

Anyway, back to my little boo boo. I was craving mexican, like a taco so we went out last night and I ordered a bowl. There had to be some flour or starch in the seasoning. I woke up in the middle of the night with my stomach in turmoil. I felt kinda crappy most of the day today too, bloated and lethargic. I finally felt better this afternoon. Next time I crave taco meat I'll be cooking it at home!

yes, it doesn't need to be complicated. One needs some variety, not just to avoid boredom, but to get all the nutrients you need since there is no perfect food.

Best wishes.

LUNA,
you wrote that you felt very much judged by Holly, not just once, but multiple times. Each post has a time stamp to identify it. Your most resent post has the time stamp "6/23/18 8:22 A".

What or the timestamps of Holly's posts where she judged you?

Also you said that she implied in a post that if you didn't follow her advice it would be your fault for not loosing weight. What is the timestamp of that post?

The reason I'm asking for specific posts is because you say she wrote these things.

Hi Everyone! Just stopping by to say 'hi'. My journey back to 'Keto-land' has been slow and uneventful, but I'm determined to make it work this time. I'm trying to simplify Keto instead of trying to overthink it.

I found a site called KetoJam ~ not sure if it is the 'end all', but a good, simplified place to start. I think, for me - I really MUST track everything that I eat. With some data, I'll be able to see what I'm doing wrong, and what - if anything, I'm doing right.

We have to make our life choices based on our own research and our morale beliefs.
I have continued my research and learned that Keto can absolutely be done as a vegan, but it is not easy. I still plan to give it my best shot, I do not want to give up on myself or my beliefs. Dr Jason Fung says it doesn't matter if you are a carnivore or a vegan, it is low carb that matters.

Yes Holly, I very much felt judged by you. Actually it has happened more than once in your responses to me. You once implied in a response post to me that if I didn't follow your advice it was my own fault for not losing weight.

I need to be part of a team where I feel supported not criticized.
It doesn't feel emotional safe to voice my thoughts and questions here.
I have been contacted privately by 3 team members that feel the same way. However they choose to remain a part of this team because they really enjoy the other folks and interaction. They tell me they just don't ask for advice because they "Don't like getting hit on the head with a hammer."

For those of you that offered genuine support I thank you very much and wish you all the best in your journey towards better health.

Carbs, cholesterol, carbs ...

In that link posted by Holly (NIGHTSKYSTAR)
www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PM
C2
716748/

Is this:
"The level of total cholesterol decreased from week 1 to week 24. HDL cholesterol levels significantly increased, whereas LDL cholesterol levels significantly decreased after treatment."

So the Keto diet lowered total cholesterol over 24 weeks. LDL (bad cholesterol) went down and HDL (good cholesterol) went up. Yes good and bad are pretty broad brush strokes.

Luna..as i said..that was an old study..they have a much newer one, its only the one i found on a quick search.
i truly hope you didnt in any way think i was judging you...I was showing you that my daughters doc, someone i consider highly educated..was giving misinformation, and that you can find anything on the net to concur with what you want to believe..and i specifically meant for keto.
I deal with many, many people at my bakery. I learn from them every day. i do vegan, dairy free, grain free, sugar free, keto, you name it i do it.
I remember being in shock when a vegan told me i couldnt use honey because..her words, it was "exploiting bees to take their honey". While i dont in any way agree with the statement, i sure dont judge..anyone is welcome to their beliefs and their reasons for them. Same with the vegan no milk or eggs..as a mom who nursed my own kids, i see no way taking milk from a cow is exploiting them, as I know the pain when there is no outlet for the milk. BUT...i have no problem with those that think it is..everyone has a right to their own opinion.

Karen, that does make sense about it floating around during loss and cholesterol correction. I'm about 4 months into maintenance, so not sure where my numbers will land. However I have been a slow weight loser for 4 years so I have had time to correct cholesterol slow. It was normal last year, 20 pounds from goal weight. However previous years it was high. Both my parents have high cholesterol.

Hi Holly.
I read the article you suggested.
It was a small study done in Kuwait.

“The prospective study was carried out at the Academic Department of Surgery, Consultation and Training Centre, Faculty of Medicine, Kuwait University (Jabriya, Kuwait) in 83 obese subjects (39 men and 44 women). “

The results were promising. The article is 14 years old, I wonder if they have done any follow up.

I did also read the disclaimer on the article:

“NIH and other funders do not dictate the journals in which their funded authors may publish. Consequently, author manuscripts in PMC may be from journals that have not yet undergone scientific review by NLM, are traditionally out of scope for the NLM collection, or have not met NLM’s standards for PMC."
Also:
“NCBI does not endorse or recommend any commercial products, processes, or services. The views and opinions of authors expressed on NCBI's Web sites do not necessarily state or reflect those of the U.S. Government…”

Having read that, it was still an interesting article, thank you for recommending it.

Thanks Kathleen - and you have a great birthday!!

I did have my labs done a month or so ago. High cholesterol. High HDL. High LDL. Low tryglyderides. I read the book Cholesterol Clarity, as Holly suggested, and they say "don't worry about total or LDL" cholesterol.

My fasting insulin is 2.7 which is a great number. So I am not highly insulin resistant.

Sadie - my sister is about 100 pounds overweight. She just had her labs done - her doctor was happy. About 160 total, I don't remember the actual numbers. The point is - she can barely walk. She can't stand up for more than a minute or two at a time. She eats whatever she wants. And a lot of it.

How can that be better than my labs? It's a mystery, but I don't believe she is healthier at all. What I HAVE heard is 6 months AFTER you have finished losing your weight, your cholesterol should be good. This is what we can strive for, and where you Sadie might already be at. I think while you are shedding weight, cholesterol locked in your fat cells are being liberated and they have to be circulating in your blood where they eventually get processed by the body. This is what I think - I don't know for sure. I don't have time to look up studies, but for myself, I'm not worried about cholesterol and will not be until maybe 6-12 months after I finish losing my weight. I'm not even close yet.

I have my annual exam and bloodwork coming up the end of this month. I'm very curious about my cholesterol. I would actually like to increase my egg consumption to more than 2 a day but I'm hesitant because of high cholesterol in my past. I'm hoping it's all in healthy ranges and keto is a non issue for my new doctor.
