The uptake is that losing fat is good - releasing the estrogen is (eventually) good - and mainly a minor inconvenience in the losing weight journey. I do notice that I kick the covers off quite a bit more at night, although I'm fine during the day. Might also have to do with the fact that I live in Texas, and it's getting really warm now. 75 is my perfect temperature!

I did read the articles, and thought they were interesting. That a man wrote the one on the Daily Apple was even more so. Keto on and get a fan?

Thanks James for concurring with what I had researched! Actually, it was a guy on Marks Daily Apple that had noticed estrogen surges when he was losing fat. Thanks for weighing in with your thoughts and for adding more helpful website articles!

I'm a guy, so I really have no experience in this area. But a little googling on estrogen and hot flashes found two things:

- fat cells hold estrogen
- loosing fat releases this extra estrogen
- both low estrogen and high estrogen can cause hot flashes

So it looks like its associated with loosing body fat. My wife didn't have hot flashes, but she did get some skin rashes when she started eating low carb, and we guessed that the rashes were toxins released from body fat.

www.drnorthrup.com/hot-flashes/
"Indeed, hot flashes are seen in women with low estrogen; however, women with high estrogen levels or fluctuating estrogen levels also experience hot flashes."

And on body fat an estrogen:
www.livestrong.com/article/380208-is
-e
strogen-released-when-belly-fat-is-lR>ost/

" Because excess fat cells produce extra estrogen, losing belly fat will release the excess estrogen, ..."

That is my guess. Hopefully things stabilize soon.

James

I started keto a few weeks ago ... and I thought I had suddenly entered menopause, too. *head smack* Yes, I've experienced hot flashes - just in the past few weeks. Interesting. Do they resolve themselves over time?

I donít believe there are really any studies out there specific to Keto or fat loss in regards to estrogen flooding. I have had a difficult time trying to figure out what was happening with my body. When I first began searching, I found this under Marks Daily Apple:

rimal-blueprint-nutrition/79541-short-
term-estrogen-flooding-the-body-after-fat-loss

Here are a few more that discuss more about estrogen dominance. But, that is also where we are, even more so in menopause than before...even though our estrogen levels are now lower.

If you discover anything more specific to menopause, Keto/fat loss and estrogen please share. I am always trying to learn & absorb knowledge.

This is a very interesting thread. I'm post-menopause by 8 years - I've been sticking my foot out from under the covers more lately and have not connected it with hot flashes at all. How does the liver flush the estrogen? Do you have any studies to point me to?

Yes! Whenever I begin to lose weight, I start having some hot flashes & cramping. I am 6 years post menopause. Keto does affect estrogen levels. I think it will eventually balance them out. Fat cells also store estrogen. So, when they are releasing, the body is flooded with estrogen and the liver has to flush it out. I have researched this in depth, as I have had issues with cramping and even post menopause bleeding in the past whenever Iíve lost much weight. It is extremely painful when this occurs due to a couple of my female issues (adenomyosis & post ablation syndrome with stenosed cervix). I do not seem to have these symptoms unless Iím losing weight. It is worse if I attempt an extended fast beyond my intermittent fasting..

This time I am determined to find a way to flush this excess estrogen out before it can cause hate and discontent. I am taking two supplements to help via Amazon. They are: Liver Cleanse by BioScience and Ultra I-3-C by Douglas Laboratories (broccoli & cauliflower extracts). Also, natural lemon juice & ACV are helpful for liver cleansing. I have only been taking the supplements a couple days, but they do seem to have stopped my cramping & helped the hot flashes. We will see. Hope this helps.

Has anyone experienced hot flashes on keto? I'm past the time where it is biological. Pretty annoying!
