If your objective is to get into ketosis, which is where fat burning occurs, then you need to be careful about proteins. The reason is simply that, over a certain amount, the liver will break them down into glucose, raising your glucose level and kicking you out of ketosis.

Additionally, if you are looking for autophagy, proteins trigger mTOR which suppresses autophagy.

So just understand that a keto diet can include some protein but you need to be mindful of quantities, as well as your reasons for using a keto diet.

Thank you for these websites, I am off to have a read , being my first week I feel like I am learning every minute of everyday and loving it. Feels like retraining my brain, it was due for a major upgrade.

This week, when I make something that is successful within my macro goals (higher fat, etc) then I write it down in my book so I can follow it exactly along with the calories, carbs, fiber, net carbs, fat, protein..) so then I don't have to log it in the future.. I will be a lazy food logger, I admit lol. So figured I am setting myself up for success this way, and then I would only have to log or check anything new as I go. I imagine as I get used to this way of eating I will probably get more familiar with what is what in terms of cooking with higher fats and might not need to log.. Right now though I just want to be sure I'm 'getting it'..

So glad you all are here!

Yeah I totally agree James. When I eat macadamia nuts, I want about 20. I eat about 6 and stop, but they taste great, and are so easy to pop in your mouth. Almonds and other nuts don't taste as good to me now.

Yesterday spark had a coconut chicken recipe up - with about 6 carbs, and a friend said "I use pork rinds for breading instead of bread crumbs" reducing those as well. It's all about experimenting. Lucky for me my husband eats anything I make. Unlucky for me, he's not eating a keto diet and "needs" some corn or potatoes to go along. Sigh. It's all a journey. I figure when I lose my weight (maybe 20-25 more pounds) and he sees it IS something you can do every day, while on vacation, etc., he may be willing to try it. He already likes the food. Just likes other stuff too.

I tried your pancakes James. I did not care for them. Everyone is different, for sure.

I have been listening to "2KetoDudes" and one episode is for newbies - they say eat bacon and eggs for a week to start. Then branch out.

How many people keep a bag of cooked bacon in their fridge? And use a strip as a snack, with some pesto or dressing or cream cheese as a topping?

INACAR,
yes everyone likes to eat different things. Lets take chicken as an example, that should fit into a Keto way of eating with no problem. Yet I had a friend who couldn't stand the smell, or taste of chicken. So if he were eating Keto, I'd have to guess that chicken would not be on the menu.

But also there are other "trigger" foods, perhaps Keto foods, but ones which trigger some other reaction. For example I make protein powder pancakes. I eat them pretty often with butter for breakfast (and a little peanut butter too). That could possibly be a trigger food for some, as I think they taste pretty close to regular pancakes.

So everyone needs to find their range of things to eat. Partly because people like different things, and partly because different things have deeper emotional (or perhaps addictive) triggers.

James

The one message I keep hearing is work your own plan. Some things are wonderful, pork rinds keep my husband happy, avocados keep me happy. And some things trigger me that seems to work for others. One of the hardest things is to realize you have to make adjustments. And ya for Texas and our perks. (pork rinds)

I live in Texas - and found chicharrones (pork rinds) at the grocery today. Yummy!! No carbs at all, and crunchy. I ate an avocado with some, and it was delicious.

I don't like counting/measuring, but have been going up and down with my weight, and want to seriously drop some inches by the end of June. So I'm upping my fat, lowering my protein. My carbs are already really low.

I got a 1.2 ketone reading this morning - going in the right direction! I weigh every 4 days, tomorrow is my weigh in day. Excited!

Plenty of folks (myself included) don't want to count, weight, obsess about everything they eat and drink, they want to just live. For them I'm trying to point to places with lists of things. Either you eat it, or you don't sort of thing. Easy.

Now if a food within that list, like almonds, is actually higher carb than other similar things, then you might temper the quantity.

Here are some links to lists:
