Thank you Holly, I needed to hear this today. I was excited to see a drop every day, but this morning I had a gain of .6, I tried not to get discouraged and I remembered the low carb burger I had at Carl's Jr. yesterday. I know logically that weight loss isn't always linear. Sometimes it doesn't go down, sometimes it goes up too.

In the Facebook group someone was saying they went from like a size 14 to a size 8 and only lost 3 pounds! I think maybe with this way of eating we are also building muscle. Many others chimed in with similar experiences, that was encouraging to hear.

So I guess the goal number isn't so important as how I look. I don't think I look 137, I think I look 134. I have been 134 many many times before and this is how I've looked. I can feel my collarbones against the air, I can feel my hipbones sticking out (not in a sick way, just that they are exposed to the air more and not covered by fat), my stomach is the most noticeable thing that's changed. Before it was really big and swollen, I was wearing lots of sweatshirts and stretching out my t shirts, but now its almost flat! I can't even really push it out. It kind of scares me actually, I feel like Im wasting away because Im used to feeling all that weight in my belly, I feel empty now! Sometimes when I start to lose weight I get fearful, I think maybe its an unconscious fear of wasting away.

Anywho, I better get going :)

exactly...and i have to tell you. i weigh once a week, if that. i was a scale jumper. i said it didnt matter. said it was for "data" and info and i didnt care what the number was, and thought i was soooo original saying that...lol and i see everyone saying it now, including family members. but i was addicted to getting on. One of the best things i ever did for myself was to STOP getting on daily, or multiple times a day. its so freaking freeing to TRULY not care what the scale says..i go by my clothes and how i feel.

Thank you for sharing your story! Im so sorry you had to deal with all that :( .

I think that's what calorie restriction does, it makes you obsessive. It deprives the brain of what it needs to think clearly, so starvation starts to sound like a good idea. I got addicted to "fasting" because the weight would drop fast and big, but I kept gaining it back. I went 17 days without eating, gained it back (to the 130s again), so I did a 23 day fast because surly it was my fault I failed last time. The insatiable hunger hit me harder. I felt out of control and just wanted to eat and eat, even though I literally couldn't digest anything, so I was throwing up quinoa and broccoli. It was horrible. My fasting journal is in the fasting group still! I can't do that kind of thing anymore.

I really enjoy keto because Im eating, but I feel amazing, and my weight keeps going down despite eating tons of calories! I lost another .2 this morning from yesterday! Its hard to believe!

And today my energy levels feel more balanced.

Natalie my entire life i've been fat. for a long time i ate 600 cals a day. I'm 59....so i did a LOT of damage to my metabolism. my high weight was 328. even in high school and grammer school i was fat fat fat. I got down to 150 the summer before my senior year...i went to weight watchers but started gaining so just quit eating. literally. i starved myself from 200 to 150. i was so proud of myself. First day of senior year the captain of the football team came up to me. Said "you might be pretty if you lost 20 pounds" I was devastated....and had a dr appt that afternoon. my doc was aghast..told me i looked anorexic and needed to gain 10 pounds IMMEDIATELY. being an overachiever i gained 100.
Keto is the only thing thats ever worked for me...ever. i gained on WW. Gained on Atkins. the only way i could lose was to just quit eating. i didnt want keto to work..i own a bakery and its HARD not to sample. but once i got going, and saw the results, i couldnt stop. i've been pretty much stalled since june.i keep going. i have 35 pounds left to go. 165 seems to be my magic number, so thats where i'm headed. but to go from a tight size 28 to a now 14/16?? if i never lose another ounce i'm happy..and i just keep ketoing on....
you can do this. i understand eating disorders. i AM an eating disorder poster girl. if i can do it..truly, anyone can...I believe in you!!

Lol that's so funny Holly!

Okay, so I wrote a post on the common sense keto board . my name is Natalie Moriarty, now you will know who I am on there :) .

I need to process all the things i learned today. Recently I've battled an almost eating disorder. Restrictive eating and low calories were making me depressed and crazy. I had to keep going more and more extreme with not eating. But I would always keep gaining it back. Not all of it, just enough to be chubby again. It was making me crazy and obsessed.

Counting calories and restricting is all I've ever known.

I've been reading a lot of Jacks website posts. And I rented The Calorie Myth for my kindle.

lol i know. i fought it at first, too,,,
and yeah he hates the powders. Waste of money...
Jack and another member did month of 5000 cals to disprove CICO even further than the big studies have....he gained i think 4 pounds?, had body analysis before and after and the gain was muscle and fluid..Erin LOST eating 5000 cals a day for 30 days...and broke a year long stall..and shes SMALL to begin with. both said never again it was difficult getting in that many cals. but good info...
we have had CICO pounded into our heads forever. try to forget everything you ever knew...LOL!!!

Nightskystar,

Both groups are closed. I was successfully added to both :) .

Common sense veto has some interesting rules. We aren't allowed to talk about stuff like keto powders etc. I was looking into maybe getting some in the future. He has some good explanations about why it's best to avoid those things. Does he consider mct oil bad too?

I read his articles about calories, and how calories in calories out is a myth and that weight loss is all about hormones. I worked out the calculations that he gave for figuring out the calories I should be eating. Mine was 1700! He said we are to eat our maintenance calories so we don't deprive our bodies. 1700 seems really high to me. Im used to eating 1200 or less. Im only 5 ft tall, with a goal weight of 115 or less...maybe 110.

But the funny thing is for the last like 3 days I've been eating 1500 or more and losing weight. I don't understand it. Calorie restriction is such a way of life for me. I can't wrap my mind around the idea of eating more and losing weight. Maybe for other people, but surly not me.

does it even show if its a closed group on facebook? Common Sense Keto is closed..not sure about Ketogenic Success.
Common Sense Keto has posts that will explain why they dont use net carbs. and dont metion IF there..lol They are dead set against it. their theory is if you want to fast, eat breakfast, then fast till next day breakfast, and only do it 2-3 times a week--if that much. Theory on that is...fasting is only as good as what your body does. Your insulin spikes when you wake up food or not, effectively breaking ANY fast by definition. So, use it to your advantage...and fast breakfast to breakfast. Is this true? no clue..i dont like analyzing things like some do.
I also dont fast..when i tried IF i stalled bigtime..and have had far less loss ever since. wish i'd never done it. for others, it works.
you gotta do what works for you!

Thank you for your replies. I really truly appreciate all the advice. I will be reading these posts a few times to try and remember everything.

I have been losing weight counting net carbs, I was thinking that if I started stalling I could switch to total. Im still new to this so Im not sure what the big difference is and why people choose one over the other.

I will check out the keto groups on Facebook. The only thing is that if I join a group everyone in my friends list will see that I joined. I try and keep my dieting life private from my friends and family.

I've been keeping my protein lower now, and my fats are higher too. I think with my history of fasting I should be able to switch into ketosis more easily. I've done intermittent fasting for the last 7 years, that's how I've been able to lose weight. Just eating healthy, even going vegan, never helped me lose weight. Now I am realizing what the problem has been. Carbs. I swell up when I eat carbs. And I was at risk of diabetes as well.

Sorry, was going off on a tangent! My brain is fuzzy today. I think from keto flu. I feel like crud!

Thank you all again!

I can tell you right now that the coach I used DOES charge for one on one coaching, but about everything he does is on the Common Sense Keto page for free. the difference is, if you are stalled or having trouble "getting it", he works with you one on one. but, really, if you read the info, you will get it all for nothing. He also doesnt mince words, but he sells NOTHING, (except his coaching time) does his research, and is pretty down to earth.
I have never looked at this stephanie keto person, but everything i see people posting about her I feel she wouldnt be a good fit for me. I have had great success just following what i've read, and the 30 days coaching i had...which really just showed me that i was eating FAR too much protein, and that net carbs should be changed to total. I had been going by what i'd read...the macro percentages...and i also wasnt eating enough. It was very hard for me to go up to 2k cals...i was sure i would gain...but Jack was adamant. as soon as i lowered my protein and raised my cals, and counted total instead of net carbs, i started losing again, and more importantly my hair stopped falling out and my nails are strong again.
he is also a big proponent of "if it aint broke dont fix it"...if you are feeling good, losing or maintaining, and your hair, nails, and skin are healthy...do what you have been doing!!! If not, ask for help.

I feel the need to note that Stephanie Keto Person offers all of what she knows for FREE... sure, you can purchase an on-line seminar opportunity (at a pittance of what others charge), but you don't have to. The positive thing about zealots, is that they really just want to be sure accurate information is getting out there.

...and personally, when someone like Stephanie Keto Person puts so much effort into making sure people aren't being misled, and that they have what they need to achieve their goals, expecting to be paid something for their expertise isn't unreasonable. I'm very grateful for the people who have helped me achieve mine and I have no problem using my wallet to express my gratitude and in support of their efforts.

In other words, why does this 'cure' suck so bad?

remember in business you have to create doubt in your customer eye that they have a problem and that i can sell you something to solve your problem . I read low number on keto around 1.0 even though i eat low carb high fat . I am losing weight and feel energetic so thats my way of feeling i am in keto .

Stephanie Keto Person is definitely not everyone's cup of tea, LOL (though I also think you may have misunderstood what she has to say)! She is a keto zealot for sure (primarily because she coaches people at the extreme ends of the keto continuum), and not as good as she could be at effectively communicating what she has to offer (not a lot of people out here offer as much support as she does for FREE). She is extremely knowledgeable (and you can't argue with her results), and she's worth listening to, but not if she agitates you, and pushes you further away from your goals.

The extent to which you use/burn ketones effectively and efficiently is the measure of how keto-adapted you are... and the optimal level of carbs/fat required is very individual. The reality is that you can be producing high levels of ketones, but not using them effectively, or efficiently. That doesn't mean you aren't burning fat. You can be fat-adapated, but not keto-adapted (they are different). Everyone keto-adapts at a different rate, with different levels of vigilance. The level of vigilance you need to employ is directly related to how metabolically deranged you are, and which of the unlimited number of metabolic mechanisms are affected in your own case. Being keto-adapted is all about where your ketone levels are in relation to you blood glucose control.

If you're happy with how you feel and the results you are getting with regard to health and weight loss, stick with it and don't worry about the rest of it (don't fix it if it's not broken). If you find you're not getting the results you want, or not feeling as well as you'd like, then you may need to be more vigilant, or as you go along the process you may find that you need to tweak as your metabolism/hormones heal(s).

"How hardcore and obsessive do you have to be to get fat adapted?"
It really depends on how metabolically/hormonally messed up you are.

Truly, being keto-adapted and subsisting on the least amount of carbs possible is not the optimally desired state of being. What you want to be is metabolically flexible and functioning optimally with respect to your own metabolic characteristics. What that looks like for you will be different than what that looks like for anyone else.

Natalie ... My suggestion would be to ditch Stephanie. It need not be hard. I am 66 years old and have lost 44 lbs in the last 6 months with Keto. I have never felt better. And if I can do it ANYONE can. Give yourself a chance and allow it to happen.

Look out 2018

ok i may be unpopular here, but i hired a coach who also is certified in all this. His approach works for about everyone.
Women: 40-75 grams protein a day. if you are an athlete go with 75, if not go lower, but DEF under 60. Carbs...TOTAL not net..no more than 20. the rest should come from fat.
I really dont know how long it takes to get into ketosis. If you are eating to the above you should be in fairly quickly...fat adapting is another thing.
so..how do you do that without all the measuring? you dont. not for the first week or 2, anyhow.use my fitness pal or another..and get a general idea. you dont have to be perfect..just get an idea.
now..most say..HOW do i get those macros and choke down all that fat?
its pretty easy. bacon. use egg yolks and ditch the whites, where most of the protein is. when i make my fat shake if my day looks like it might be high i use one whole egg and one yolk in it, or 2 whole and one yolk. you wont even miss it..same if you scramble them.
butter, butter, butter. on EVERYTHING.
and please, PLEASE dont eat at a deficit. the whole calories in calories out thing has been PROVEN incorrect. do not buy into the popular "fat as a lever" thing. YES eat three meals a day. you need the fat ALL ALONG...again this has been proven and will keep you from stalling. look up your TDEE. this is the MINIMUM number of calories you need to eat a day, or you will start losing your hair, your nails will get brittle. Please trust me i can tell you that from personal experience. as soon as i upped my cals and fat that stopped, my stall broke, and i started losing again.
you can do this. everyone is a bit different please dont compare yourself to anyone else. if you are on facebook check out the groups "Common Sense Keto" and "Ketogenic Success" both are run by qualified keto coaches..you do NOT need to pay them...they correct misinformation given in the groups and the pinned posts have a lot of information that is helpful. Ask all the questions here that you can...if we dont know the answer we will find it our for you.
above all, i do agree..relax. a stressed body isnt going to let go of anything. enjoy the ride...have faith. It WILL work if you work it correctly. If you need backup info from anything i've said above, i have access to that. We are glad you are here and happy to support you along the way!!

First of all relax! No diet will be successful if it stresses you out! If you limit your carb intake to below 20grams and you have moderate protein 60-90 grams, your body will become carb depleted and your body will switch to ketones for fuel. Most people will take about 3 days to get to this stage called being in ketosis.
When you start out you should eat more fat because your body is still not very efficient a accessing your fat stores and you need the energy. You do not want to become too tired from insufficient fuel or lack of food. After you have been carb depleted for a few weeks you will notice you are no longer hungry and then you can reduce your fat intake. By then your body will be "fat adapted" and will be looking for your stored fat for fuel so you don't need to keep eating as much fat. You should always eat a healthy number of calories. If you go to low you will slow your metabolism and that is all bad....
You have been losing. I suspect you are doing fine. Don't let some overzealous messaging derail you!

I have been watching Youtube videos of people who are doing a keto lifestyle, I find them inspiring and I am learning a lot. They all seem to have an adjustment period and then settle into ketosis. They have very similar descriptions about what ketosis feels like. Which is the same thing I've felt in the past.

And then I stumble upon Stephanie keto person's channel, and I get disheartened with the whole thing. Today in the video I watched she said "so many people e mail me saying they are in ketosis, no you aren't!! " she went on and on about how its an extremely hard thing to get into, you have to get the macros perfect, understand your organs, its a lot of trial and error etc. She made it seem so so difficult, if not impossible to reach ketosis and become fat adapted.

I've purposely stayed away from her videos when I started this because I've come across them in the past and they scared me away from keto.

She said she starts her clients off at 200 grams of fat a day! And she said that should come from meat. I think I would get so sick! She says to cut out dairy, nuts, and some other stuff.

I apologize if this offends anyone, she seems like a very nice person. But what confuses me is the fact that all these other women I've been watching like Keto Karma, Holista, etc have all lost weight and have good ketone numbers. They make it seem easier to get into ketosis.

I don't want to get really obsessed with this. The one thing I love about keto is that Im NOT thinking about food as much anymore. I don't want to start obsessing again. If that's what it takes maybe I should just be low carb and higher fat without the goal of ketosis.

What do you guys think? How hardcore and obsessive do you have to be to get fat adapted? I thought you just had to show your body that more fat is coming in for energy instead of carbs.
