I'm going to read that. Thanks!

Keto has been really easy for me until now. I guess I love dairy and meat! I'm on almost vegan keto now and it's so hard to hit my macros. I'm always getting way more carbs than I want. I've easily been able to do 20g or less of cabs. This is getting frustrating. :(

My dr appointment is tomorrow but I don't think I'll have any results in yet.

I'm just really not ready to give keto up.

I'm no doctor... I've read on various sites the importance of getting enough potassium in your diet. I think I remember reading how that prevents fatty liver because your liver needs the potassium to process the fats. Choline is also hugely important.

ohh i would never tell my doc anything..i just hand her websites and stuff. she loves learning so reads, then calls me and asks what i think lol. i tell her shes the expert not me...
its just that this very thing came up in the facebook group the other day..one poor girl was so upset and scared from her lab results and her doc scared her so badly..that there was a big discussion on it. I dont know much about the cholesterol part...i get my labs done in september and am hoping all is well..i've never had cholesterol over 152 in my life,,,,and its usually more like 120..so it will be interesting to see what its like after 10 months on keto.
Also..there are quite a few vegan ketoists on the forums i'm in on facebook....if you ever want to know which groups let me know! They discuss it a lot...

Thanks Holly! I'm going to take a read of that.

I'm hesitant to be "all up in my doctor's face" with stuff so I'm being cautious in how I approach her. She loves what keto is doing for my diabetes. . .my a1c is of a person who doesn't have it! But liver failure and super high cholesterol is not cute.

She seems very open minded so I hope that we can have a constructive dialog next week.

I'm off to the grocery store because I'm on vegetarian keto now! LOL This will hopefully help me get my cholesterols down. I can't go on any cholesterol meds until my liver function improves so. . .heal thyself, right?

good to see you Jules!!!

you might want to get a book called Cholesterol Clarity. it explains why some show high cholesterol..
if you are on facebook you might want to join ketogenic success and post there...many can tell you the facts about the cholesterol and the test to ask for. something about particles, i think...
but do check it out..or google high cholestreol readings and keto.
thats great news on the A1C!!!

Hey y'all! I know I haven't posted in a hot minute but I've just been busy, feeling blah mentally and physically, and generally emotionally drained too.

But enough boo hooing on my part. . .lemme get to the informational part.

As some of you here remember, I've been on keto since about the beginning of the year. To me, it's not that long, it's less than a full year. Also, I wasn't doing this to lose weight, I was doing it to stay off of insulin.

So fast forward to about 2 days ago when my full blood panel came in.

Good news? My A1C is 5.3. Yeah, it was that low. For those that are not in the know, the goal for A1C for known diabetics is 7 or less.

Bad news? All my bad cholesterols are SKY HIGH. My good cholesterol is really low. My doctor wanted me OFF keto.

I asked her if I switched to vegetarian/vegan keto, would she have less reservations. She said it is worth a try. So right now I'm on a vegan variety of keto.

She can't give me any cholesterol meds because that blood panel also indicated the onset of fatty liver disease. That's the step before cirrhosis. It's not alcohol related because I drink MAYBE 3 times a month on social occasions. She blames keto for it but I see her next week and I'm going to ask her to specify. Everything I'm reading online says that keto is the CURE for fatty liver syndrome so. . .

In any case, I'm getting a liver ultrasound next week to get my info on why my liver is failing.

I felt it important to post this because everyone here REALLY needs to keep up with their blood tests to see where their organ functions and cholesterols are at. I'm happy about my A1C numbers but if it really did cost me my liver function, I don't know if it was worth it.

I'll keep you posted if you are interested. I really want to know the basis of my doctor saying that it is the keto that is making my liver fail.
