emoticon Holly, (NIGHTSKYSTAR), I forgot all about the carbs in whipping cream discussion.

emoticon Anyway, the real point of this topic is to get you to think about your own personal path.

There are a few paths.

Path 1) have a list of very low carb foods and only eat those.
Path 2) weight, count, measure and have a maximum number of grams of carbs ( and perhaps calories)
Path 3) like path 2, but handle your carbs like a spending limit, so accumulate your carbs into treats

Of course if you are weighing and counting, you can count all sorts of things (and I have at times), calories, grams of carbs, fat, protein, vitamins, ...

It is whatever works for you, and like Holly said "no complaining if you make a choice that doesn't work for you".

and thats why i always say you have to do whats right for you, but no complaining if you make a choice that doesnt work.
there is great debate on the "if it fits your macros" thought. some say absolutely not. it has to be a keto food (which means zero fruit) some say..its fine if it fits your macros. i experiment. i find i cannot eat ANY fruit without gaining. nope. not even 2 raspberries. others can. i cant eat any sweeteners but swerve, and very little of that, and swerve IS keto. So i think its individual.
I can and do have carbquik here and there on holidays and non ketoers fight me for the wonderful biscuits. others say they are "bad" and wont touch them.
personalize it. every one of us is different. i read something on a very strict keto sight the other day that kind of shocked me..they were advocating sugar free reese's peanut butter cups and york peppermint patties!! peanuts are a legume not a nut, therefore not truly keto, although i will take a spoonful of made by me, nothing but ground to a paste peanuts. but as a processed dessert? especially by one of the two top strictest keto groups i know? wow.
and it needs to be said again..be careful. James and i had a discussion when i first joined the group, about heavy cream. i was so excited that it had zero carbs..and he said no, it has carbs. i thought i had hit the motherlode with the brand i bought, because it clearly stated zero carbs..lol yeah google it. James was right..it does,,,and they add up fast. i'm surprised i had any success...i was living on it..whipping it, adding it to everything because i was convinced it was zero carbs!!!
anyhow..you might want to check out the debate and what the pros and cons are with the if it fits your macros thing. personally i prefer to stay as close to what the experts call keto approved foods as i'm able..for me i lose better. but like i said there are days...
good topic, James!!

James,
that was fantastic. I want to know more.....but I am a right brain person and
just really have to work at left brain stuff. I got lost with the percents.
Thank you so much for saying ok to certain foods as long as our carbs are within the allowance.

I ate a whole grapefruit today. It's what I chose to spend my 20 grams of carbs on.

The shocking answer is that all foods are allowed when eating Keto.

I even eat pineapple. You are shocked. You are certainly thinking, that's not Keto, and you are a team leader!

OK, I got your attention. The real goal is to eat as low in carbs as you can, which typically ends up something like 20 to 30 grams of carbs a day. I personally don't count fibre.

So pineapple? I have a small taste now and then, as long as it fits into my daily maximum. Frankly if I ate any large amount of pineapple, and I have no room for carbs anywhere else. So very small amounts of that.

So, how do i figure out what is low carb?

I figured out that the Ideal Protein was low carb, and that was the diet I started on. I looked at s list of "approved" vegetables on the Ideal Protein diet. I knew that too many carbs and something would not be on the list. Now too many is a number, but just what number?

Broccoli was on the approved list, yet with almost no fat, and very little protein, the majority of its calories were coming from carbs. Indeed about 80% of the calories in broccoli come from carbs.

Mashed potatoes with milk and butter added have a smaller fraction of calories from carbs, so that wasn't it. Then the thought occurred, perhaps it is the fraction of the weight that is carbs. Indeed, the approved low carb veggies for the Ideal Protein diet are about 5% of their weight or less. Suddenly I could ask, what about this new vegetable? I go to nutritiondata, calculate, and have my answer.

So why do j have a cutoff of 6%, and not 5%? It's a matter of wanting a little fruit and not wanting to feel guilty. Strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries are all creeping up on 6%

So generally I eat 6% or less. For me that fuzzy line is the line between what is "allowed" or not.
