Some fresh ginger, about the size of a dime, steeped in hot water for a few minutes is also soothing to the tummy. Be aware, to much and it will make things.....er.......uh......windy.

Holly,
that is an interesting way to think about it. I never thought your body wanted to get rid of carbs as quickly as possible, thus eating crackers would cause a blood sugar spike right away, which your body want to manage quickly.

Indeed diabetics, whose blood sugar goes too low are suggested to eat crackers, which quickly raises blood sugar.

What it made me think of is that pure alcohol is a poison (though most of us tend to drink some), and as a poison the body want to deal with it yet faster than carbs, indeed my understanding is that your body uses alcohol as a fuel before carbs. Now I'm realizing why. Which is worse, being poisoned, or having high blood sugar? Well being poisoned is worse.

So the order goes like this:
- alcohol (burn immediately)
- carbs (burn next)
- fat
- protein

In ketosis you will burn fat before protein for fuel, though your body needs a few carbs (30 or so) for one part of your brain, so if absolutely need be it will turn to your muscles for that and get those via gluconeogenesis.

Huh. When nauseated one suggesting is to eat crackers, but not drink alcohol. Hmmm. I understand not drinking alcohol when nauseated, at least at a practical level.

James

I'm sure it was something I ate that just didn't agree with me, for whatever reason.
Otherwise I feel fine, so I'm sure it isn't a bug :)

I'm slowly starting to settle down a bit, it's been a rough morning. I'm not even remotely worried about ketosis or weight loss or anything else at this point, I was more curious than anything.

It's been about an hour since I was last sick, so I'm optimistic that it's over. The crackers and pop definitely did the trick, and now I've switched over to water and am feeling a bit better.

and to add...its why people have blood spikes..you go all night with no food...eat a bowl of something you THINK is good for you, say, oatmeal. your blood sugar spikes like crazy...eat something low or no carb, blood sugar levels stay steady..no huge sudden spikes,,,just a small short incline.

with the oatmeal as soon as its hit your blood and spiked it, you crash....then need more sugar..so it spikes again...and on and on in a cycle...
but again...sick is different. can you keep any liquids down? i'd say flat diet gingerale, powerade zero...or plain water or tea may be better for your stomach that continuing to vomit? you need fluids more than anything so you dont dehydrate!

Off hand... my thoughts is that saltines would digest rather quickly... so yes, unless you lose them right away... you will get the nutrition from them. It will probably put you out of ketosis. You do what you can though to get better. Don't stress about keto... just work on getting better.

i would just worry about getting over it..any sugars are taken immediately (think a diabetic going into shock..you give them a cup of OJ with a packet of sugar mixed in. within MINUTES they are fine again. seriously.) so sugars are absorbed right away.
You do what you have to....you get jump right back on when you feel better!

I have been super-nauseous all day and got some Saltines to settle myself down. I'm not even remotely concerned about ketosis at this point, all I want to do is feel better (I've been vomiting on and off for much of the morning).

But I am curious about something: if I eat loads of saltines and they just won't stay down, how does that figure into blood sugar/ketones/calories?

Again, SOOOO not stressing about it here, just wondering how only partially-digested food fits into the equation.
