Thanks Cat! Those recipes aren't so different from what I do -- make overnight oats. The main difference is I use Scottish oats, not hemp seeds. Luckily I live near several Trader Joe's so I can nip in & get the hemp seeds. My health food store or my local Winco might even have them in bulk. I have most of the rest of the ingredients, except the ones that make the oatmeal sweet & I've trained myself not to use sugar or any sweetener in my oatmeal -- just a bit of fruit. I'm so happy to know I don't have to give up oatmeal on cold winter mornings!

I didn't realize that -- I had the impression it was only 7 or 8 grams. Even worse, I guess, I make mine with 4 oz. yogurt & 2/3 cup milk. Don't add sugar though. Just another food I dearly love that I have to give up. But I do appreciate the info!

a couple years ago i was gifted with an 8 week session with Dr Arrone's institute. He is a pioneer in weight loss and controlling diabetes..a haven for people who couldnt find anything to control their blood sugar. Even though i have never been diabetic, this was for weight loss too.
We did it by conference call/online..and there were 6 of us in the group. At the end there were two of us..my friend that had given me the "2nd person free" time was sporadic, the other person that stayed and myself were the only 2 that made every tuesday night meeting.
The dietitian used really good, simple graphics, and gave us charts we could print out. what shocked me was oatmeal and cheerios..supposedly heart healthy and good for you. They would spike your blood sugar so badly it would totally throw you off!!
so many things we have been lied to about...such a shame!

Two foods that surprised me were bananas and corn flakes. When I used to eat those together for breakfast, and I thought I was being good by not putting sugar on top.

Percentage of weight that is carbs:

Bananas (22%)
Corn Flakes (82%)

At the time corn flakes didn't taste at all sweet to me, though they do now, but only slightly. You know, sugar is 100% carbs, but corn flakes ... 82% ... wow!

I might as well have been eating a bowl of sugar for breakfast.

Just to stay on topic ... non-sweet breakfast cereals, like cheerios, those were a suprise.

Then of course it was cheerios, banana, and white sugar all together for breakfast ... yikes.

Holly,
I am moderator of the group "Keto Clarity" and you're right Jimmy Moore counts total carbs. The thing is that there are various types of fibre, and probably are slightly digestible (though mostly not). Its fuzzy. I too though consider net carbs (don't count the fibre). I too love cheese and low carb yogurt, like Greek yogurt. I wouldn't cut dairy unless I was SURE that I had a problem with it.

Holly,
as for protein, I totally agree. You need a certain amount of protein, but excess protein is not blood sugar neutral the way dietary fat is. So too much protein raises blood sugar, insulin kicks in to lower your blood sugar, and in doing so also locks up existing body fat since you are in storage mode.

Just curious as to why Maria is suggesting for you to delete dairy. Dairy is a big part of most keto followers. Is it because you have been stalled?

the Keto Clarity book suggests you NOT do net carbs, but total carbs. I would quit if i did that..but for people who cant lose, i guess thats what they suggest. I talked to Maria i think Emmerlich? from Mariamindbody..and she suggested i delete dairy. Again...if i cant have cheese, which is my one food pleasure left, i dont think i'd make it...

well the thing is, you can "spend" your 20 grams of carbs any way you want. i really want to spend mine on fruit. but i know better...because i want a handfull or more, not 4 berries. so i choose not to have them. I also know i lose better if i stay under 10g carbs a day..and the spinach salad i have for supper every night, and the mushrooms, pretty much knock that right off.
Fruit also has lots of vitamins, and is supposedly really good for you. I am reading a book right now called Keto Clarity, lent to me by a friend I told about Keto, and she started too. She bought the book...read it and i'm borrowing it for a couple weeks. Its an eye opener..so much we have been lied to about. Its written by doctors and someone who has benefitted greatly from keto..and i highly recommend it. i'm going to implement some of the tweaks they talk about..i think i've probably been eating too much protein and thats why my loss has stalled.

I also was stunned to find carrots were "off limits". And onions. Onions?!! I put onions in many of the things I cook & may keep on doing that. Onions are a very good source of vitamin C, as well as B6, biotin, chromium, calcium and dietary fibre. In addition, they contain good amounts of folic acid and vitamin B1 and K. Onions contain a large amount of sulphur and are especially good for the liver. As a sulphur food, they mix best with proteins, as they stimulate the action of the amino acids to the brain and nervous system.

The onion is the richest dietary source of quercetin, a potent antioxidant flavonoid (also in shallots, yellow and red onions only but not in white onions), which is found on and near the skin and is particularly linked to the health benefits of onions. Quercetin has been shown to thin the blood, lower cholesterol, raise good-type HDL cholesterol, ward off blood clots, fight asthma, chronic bronchitis, hay fever, diabetes, atherosclerosis and infections and is specifically linked to inhibiting human stomach cancer. It's also an anti-inflammatory, antibiotic, antiviral, thought to have diverse anti-cancer powers. Quercetin is also a sedative.

A large survey found that onions and garlic lovers had much better blood profiles (cholesterol, triglycerides and HDLs) than those who ate fewer of the bulbs or shunned them altogether.

Things that onions can do for your heart:
Boost beneficial HDL cholesterol
Thin the blood
Retard blood clotting
Lower total blood cholesterol
Lower triglycerides
Lower blood pressure

On James' list of foods below 6% carbs, onions were just over the line. I'm going to see if I can work them in without going carb crazy.

We were told that, as a "general rule of thumb", that the veggies grown underground would be higher in carbs (potatoes, sweet potatoes, carrots, onions, that sort of thing...). So, basically the various books advised, eat veggies and fruits grown Above the ground... but then we've discovered that tomatoes are a bit too high in carb (at least for me.).

Sooo

And the other thing that is a bit frustrating is trying to figure out which veggie carbs are high in the fibers that help prevent constipation etc but without also being absurdly high in carbs (especially since it's a fiber carb and not a sugar carb.

Kind of a maze that I'm always wandering around in...

And strengthens her arms.

Bananas. It shouldn't have surprised me since it is a fruit, but really it's a bit hard to figure bananas into the diet.

You're getting closer...well except for today perhaps...LOL. You can get it down. I know that some people do better by cutting the carbs down in steps instead of all at once. It's all on what works best for you.

Cashews shocked me.

I thought all nuts were pretty low carb, let me compare the fraction of weight that is carbs for two different nuts:
- macadamia nuts (5.6% not counting fibre)
- cashews (29.4%)

In comparison,
- cooked rice (27.8%)

DISPATCH91,
I still eat bell peppers as they are about 5% carbs by weight.

It was bell pepper for me as well as onions so only small amounts of those and carrots. I loved bell pepper and carrots in salads but only a little now.

Just wondering which foods surprised you when you saw the carb content.

I was pretty surprised when I put light yogurt into the tracker and saw that it's very high carb. I probably shouldn't have been surprised, though, since it's pretty high in sugar. Wonder if that will hold true for many "light" and "reduced fat" foods. Added sugar to compensate for removed fat?

Carrots surprised me too, I used to eat a lot of them because I thought of them as a "safe" food.

What foods took you off guard when you started going low-carb/keto?

BTW, I'm definitely not a keto gal yet, but am slowly working my carbs down. Most days I'm around 50-60g of carbs, but today I'm nearer to 90. Yikes.
