Holly, your joke about being an overachiever made me laugh! Since I always do the Cleopatra routine when I'm not eating the way I should, I don't know if I'm as much of an overachiever as you but I do know I gained at least 50# emoticon in a very short while when I quit smoking the first time & told myself I could only handle one addiction at a time, and it was not going to be overeating at the moment. VERY bad thinking --- 40 years later I'm still packing that 50# around with me, plus all its cousins & friends!

Can't wait to really get onto the keto WOE and start waving goodbye to them!

Welcome Need2Move2,

Read post in the forums. You will find lots of great info there. Visit people's sparkpages I sometimes find good info in someone's blog post.

I myself have gotten books people have recommended. bookmarked websites, etc. Also take measurements weekly and weigh once a week not everyday. Remember it takes time to develop healthy healing habits.

Hey everyone,
I am new to the Keto life.
I have Crohn's Disease and have struggled for years with tummy issues. ( bad bloating and gas).
I stumbled across this new way of eating. I have always been over weight, tried every diet out there-none were successful.
This new life style is a life saver! I have only been following it since March 11 but I am down 9 pounds already. This is really good for me... I am used to counting calories and maybe getting a pound a month. I feel awesome-no tummy issues! I have energy! I have no cravings for sugar! I can eat this way for my life!
My Dad has Bladder cancer, diabetics, heart disease, high blood pressure.. so if I stayed on my old path- I could see my future.
I will not have a surgeon cut open my chest and touch my heart!

I have not had any bad experiences as of yet. I make sure I have spinach every day and have had no bath room issues.
This is a life saver and I am thankful for any information I can learn from this forum.
Any and all advice is welcomed!
Thanks,
Karla

They are very similar Sharon. The main difference is that in the keto plan the proteins are also kept to a moderate level. What the keto WOE is doing is attempting to get the body to be more efficient at burning fat for fuel since what's the point of having it in storage if the body doesn't use it?

Thank you kindly for sharing James :-)

may I ask a question....

isn't the Keto eating plan ... very similar to... Atkins eating plan?
Or
did I get the wrong idea? My apologies if I did get it wrong.

Subject: TMI about BM

In my original post I forgot to ask about bowel movements ... how could I forget that?

For myself, with ulcerative colitis, which I was on anti-inflammatory medication for years, this WOE is a blessed relief. I used to run to the bathroom with great urgency. When I had the first sensation of that, I knew I had about 3 minutes to find a toilet, 5 tops, or else.... So I knew where all the toilets were in every shopping centre on the drive to work. To the toilet only 3 times in a day was a low day.

I even checked out where the bathrooms were in schools along the way to work. Parking at the school and finding the office and asking where the washrooms were just to figure things out ahead of time in preparation for another day, so I could save that 2 minutes of searching when I really needed it.

Critical.

So now it is more like one BM every 3 days. If I'm not in discomfort, and I'm not, then I take it as a myth that one BM a day is "normal". I have a new "normal", far far better than my old one, and no more anti-inflammatory drugs.

Thank you Julia for sharing your journey and your advice.

it is hard to imagine swallowing olive oil or ANY oil... even greasy foods gets me nausea (emesis).

I will however cook on my stove and use olive oil for my scrambled eggs :-) Hope that will work smiles

thank you again for your tips, hugssssssssssssssss

I can't imagine - well I don't want to imagine trying to pass stool after a hemorrhoid surgery! So I hope I never have to have surgery. But I do empathize with the "passing rocks" because it does seem like winter just dries me out even more than the 140+ oz of water I drink.

One thing I did learn years ago and is still true but olive oil is an excellent stool softener and also helps heal the tears in rectum when I have been dealing with rocks... It is non addictive like some laxatives are and has been the stool softener of choice for over 5,000 year in the Middle East/Levant ... I usually mix it in juice or buttermilk, and if it is a really good quality fresh EVOO I sometimes shoot it straight (only a tablespoon or so for me, and less for a smaller person. Usually a teaspoon or less for kids.).

I have also just swabbed some around the chute below, to help soften stuff already packed in when the discomfort gets too bad.

Honestly it's worse when I have had junk carbs like pizza - just sets up like concrete. I have been known to eat my pizza and not wait for the pain - just down a shot or two of olive oil immediately after I've enjoyed my pizza. I should try making veggie based pizzas, like on cauliflower or eggplant (lots of SparkRecipes for the various veggie pizzas ...).

If you can find it in a local health food store, Turkey Rhubarb seems to be the best and softest laxative - they use a combo of herbs that softens the stool as well as get the guts going (casada segrada (sp?) so you can use it for like 10 days or so and the effect wears off because Body starts to resist the stimulation of the casada segrada whatever it's spelled...

I recently read article in Sparkpeople (maybe in the SP Blog?) on Jackfruit and looked up some Jackfruit recipes. We had seen it at the Asian market last week, but didn't buy. So then this week after reading the recipes on Jackfruit being so low in carbs and high in fiber, I'm wondering if it wouldn't help plow through and make elimination a little easier? It can be prepared to taste/feel like meat but is low protein. But in KETO we don't really need or want high protein, right?? Anyway it's grown on a tree and should pass the "above ground" fruit/veggie "rules" for KETO... one can hope!!

And strengthens her arms.

I can't comment on the weight loss part because I am not trying to lose weight. On keto WOE, I still lose weight when I'm not trying.

My energy is a LOT better and I'm never "hangry" like I used to get on a carb heavy WOE. I get a little hunger but it is more of a "oh, maybe I should eat something?" versus me going on a rampage.

I used to be chronically constipated. I'm talking I used to cry when I had to go #2. Not only did it not really "come out" often, but when it did, it came out like little hard rocks and it TORE ME UP. Sometimes those rocks would get clumped together and the only thing I had was tears.

Nowadays, I do not have that problem at all. I think it is all the fat I eat. My marcos are about 80% fat. So for me personally, constipation is no longer an issue at all.

WHAT A RELIEF! (no pun intended)

I don't have that problem since going dairy free, but I would recommend golightly hard candy. 3 of those little suckers loosen things up real well. The sugar alcohols would be my guess.

Cynthia fully agree...you go too low you will stall and your body will hang on to EVERYTHING...

Sunshine..so very sorry for your pain..i do know pain, but not that one. i generally go the other way on that...disaster pants! But I know i DONT want to be constipated, so i have a spinach salad every night with my supper and that seems to do the trick for me....i know its probably not that easy for you.

Thank you Holly, very inspiring. You are showing that we 50ish year olds can do this.

I need to add a word of warning with eating keto or any diet. I have lost close to 70 and my energy has been phenomenal.. until about a month ago. Due to some stress/dead in family etc etc I was having a hard time eating and often went ultra low in calories. My weight loss stalled, my energy plummeted. Do what you can to get the calories in. Even with work, I had 3 of the 7 days that I was around 700 or 800 calories. I had a gain this week of two pounds. Don't mess your metabolism up by going low in calories just because this WOE takes away hunger. The whole idea of this WOE (notice I am not saying diet Holly) is for your body to become a efficient at burning fat for fuel. Getting too low puts the body into starvation mode and it hangs onto the fat reserves.

I'll start..
in the 90s i weighed 100 pounds more than i did this morning (yes i passed the 100 lost mark!!)
i tried so hard to lose...and i'd drop 20, gain 10...on and on. i tried EVERYTHING...atkins, WW, starvation, the tomato soup diet. they all worked for a couple weeks, then i either gained or cheated. I own it...i didnt stick to it if i didnt see results.
Last fall my son and his fiancee came home for their yearly visit..they started keto late january 2016..and by the time i saw them in october EACH had lost 70 pounds. wow..they talked to me, i said no way (as a former nurse, and one who studied a lot about nutrition due to my weight problem, this went against EVERYTHING)
i woke up october 29th and said ya know..i'm doing this. i didnt prep, had nothing in the house but a freezer full of meat, and i own a bakery. but i did it anyhow. i told myself i was just going to do it till thanksgiving the end of november. well..thanksgiving came and i was down THIRTY pounds..so i made my keto thanksgiving dinner and smiled at everyone else eating the potatos and pies i made...
by Christmas i was down another 10...then in january i stalled. i did everything right, and yeah i got discouraged, but i stuck it out. and today i'm another 8 down from then....4 of that this week.
i did get sick and dizzy and feeling lousy..but not till 2-3 weeks in. powerade zero helped me. i just took a swig whenever i walked by the fridge..it lasted about a week and was done.
I have no hunger, no true cravings..just wishes. i'd love a plate of spaghetti, but i dont crave it.

My energy is up. i walk past a mirror and say whoa who is that. Dont get me wrong, i still have 60 pounds to go. well, i think. thats my "chart weight" but maybe its really less or more..i've only been there once..in 1976..when i starved myself there..and a doc told me i was too thin and gain 10..and i, being an overachiever, gained 100. sigh.
anyhow...stick it out. let the process happen. treat a stall like its your body healing and regrouping to drop a bunch more. and remember this..i have to tell myself every day.
EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT!!! dont compare yourself to someone else. that woman who lost 20 last month? its her first time losing weight...not the 50th like me...so yeah..remember the first time? it went quicker. every time we have lost and gained our body got a little more damaged, and its going to be a little harder to lose.
They say you didnt gain it overnight? yeah, i did. i went to college and gained 50 pounds in THREE MONTHS. my metabolism has always been wonky. I truly believe keto is fixing that...
stick with it. give it a chance...be patient (and i know thats hard). Truth is i NEVER thought i'd see the scale numbers i'm seeing now. I seriously was considering weight loss surgery, but due to my wacky metabolism, my doc didnt think it would work...she is totally aghast at my progress, and now suggesting it to other tough cases.
PS..i'm 58....they say the older you get the harder it is to lose..i couldnt lose it at 30 but i'm doing it now.....

I'm starting this topic off for SUNSHINE5268. She has about 90 pounds to loose and wants to do that in less than 18 months. So I just wanted others to post their experience with weight loss eating Keto. Rate of loss, hunger, cravings ...

Two things to note for anyone starting Keto. In the first week or so there is a lot of water weight loss. This is water stored with carbs, the carbs go, and the water goes. So pretty typical is say 6 pounds lost in week 1. Then one gets optimistic and unrealistic and thinks at this rate ... I'll be done in a really short time.

But only about 2 of the 6 are fat loss. Then week 2 hits and one "only" looses 2 pounds. So one wrong reason to quit is because the results aren't as stellar as ones desires.

The second major thing when starting Keto is that this major shift away from carbs has an impact on body fluids and electrolytes. You can get dizzy, or get headaches very early on until your body reaches its new balance. Take some extra salt to deal with this electrolyte issue it really helps with headaches.

So I'm curious about peoples experience with:
- rate of weight loss (short and long term)
- dizziness and headaches, and when did you reach your new balance
- salt or other electrolyte issues
- hunger and energy while loosing weight
