I didnt get rashes James. Just a headache and feeling tired and "off". I'm only suggesting the powerade zero for that...I have a swig here and there..its cheap..50 cents for a huge bottle here..and that bottle lasts me a week anyhow..

Holly,
I had a look under "powerade zero" and keto flu. Yes, it looks like that would be related to electrolytes. That is part of the Keto flu.

As for skin rashes from burning body fat and toxins stored in body fat being released, that is another thing, and I don't see how powerade can help there, but I don't see how it can hurt either. It may all be one collective storm of change, and perhaps later after starting Keto for some than for others.

Just a question... My flu-like symptoms came a bit later like Holly's did. My question is, if someone has ALOT of stored fat from carbs (not sure if that's a thing or not), could it take longer to get to the point of ketosis? I'm a very large person, my original diet was MOSTLY carbs & sugars. Is it possible that it took me longer to get to ketosis? I don't know if this is the case, just asking, but it seemed like a possibility.

Thoughts??

NIGHTSKYSTAR,

you wrote somewhere that you got the keto flu several weeks in (not in the first days), felt miserable and thought of throwing in the towel, but made it through to the other side.

I'm wondering if what you had was something else. I'm wondering if it was a release of toxins. Body fat is where the body also stores fat soluble toxins, and so doesn't want to burn that fat off and come face to face with those toxins. My wife felt unwell after a number of weeks of low carb, and broke out in a rash in various places. The skin is a path for the body to eliminate toxins, hence her rash.

CECE0330, a howdy back to you.

I know what you mean. Philosophically I'm Paleo. My problem is that I'm a type-2 diabetic.

So one can eat low carb Paleo, but that is a yet smaller set of things to eat. So I go for Keto because it is more focused on nutrition, and less focused on what our ancestors ate, and Keto handles my type-2 diabetes problem very well.

Yes Keto has things like cheese that Paleo doesn't have. One could argue from a Paleo point of view that dairy is very new to humans, and so is suspect, and indeed many folks do have dairy allergies. But in the big picture Keto is a far far healthier way to eat than what I used to eat before.

Howdy all. I've been on Spark for a loooong time. I lost weight, got to goal, gained some, lost some, and gained again. Not back to my starting weight ever, but enough to make me REALLY want to get my s*** together again! Long story short, my Spark journey over the years is what opened my eyes to Paleo, which I responded to well, but a life without cheese is no life at all! so that led to me discovering Keto. I feel good on keto. Of all the "lifestyle" eating plans I've tried, it seems the least painful, and therefore the most sustainable, even if the weight seems to come off a little more slowly. Anywho, i'm back at it today (did pretty good last week, but the weekend was spent out of town, and I'm just never that great at keeping to plan while traveling).

Just wanted to say Hi. emoticon

Subject: gluten intolerance

Actually, saying you have gluten intolerance is pretty fashionable. It may actually be true, especially if one feels less joint pain after cutting wheat out.

Wheat has gluten, as do other things, but wheat is probably the major one and it is everywhere in high carb things:
- bread
- cake
- coatings on fried meats
- cookies
- pasta
- couscous
- flour tortillas
- muffins
- pastries

CATCHINGBLUEJAY,
I do avoid sugar. But I can see eating a few things that are higher carb just to add a little variety in life. They need to be kept in check, so small "treats". My small treat is often some dark chocolate, 85% cocoa. I know each square has 2 grams of net carbs, so its not like I eat 10 squares. I eat 1 or 2 at a time, often with a dab of peanut butter on top.

So I'm not a purist, in not letting anything with carbs get into my body, but I am on alert for those things, I don't want my blood sugar to go up and cause cravings for yet more high carb things, and on to that roller coaster.

FRANCESCANAZ,
so your coworkers think you are crazy and you are going to kill yourself following a craze diet?

Huh?

But you are loosing excess body fat, and too much body fat is bad, and your blood sugar is better ... just how unhealthy can this be?
emoticon

I would like to point out these pages in Wikipedia:
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carbohydrate
and on that page it says:
"Carbohydrates are a common source of energy in living organisms; however, no carbohydrate is an essential nutrient in humans."

Not essential means you don't need to get it from food you eat.

Then this page on essential nutrition:
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Essential_nu
tr
ient

it lists amino acids (from protein) and fatty acids (from fat), and a bunch of minerals and vitamins. It does not mention carbohydrates. You'd think I was writing Wikipedia.

I don't avoid all carbohydrates, I just view them as something that might come into my body in small amounts, typically to get other things, I mean broccoli has carbs, but I eat broccoli.

So follow your path!

James, you mentioned not using sugar. I applaud that as sugar is very inflammatory to the body in general. I have a lot of joint pain, some due to an ankle injury, but I am looking forward to sleeping better, feeling better, and better health.

As far as bread goes. Well, I do allow myself the occasional slice of Ezekiel bread with a tablespoon of low carb peanut butter. It is essentially a nice treat for me once in a while.

I'm brand spanking new to this group but not entirely new to the keto lifestyle. I'm just easing back into it. As I said in my introduction, I am pre-diabetic also. My mother is a diabetic. This lifestyle has been recommended by some in the diabetic community. My mom's resting glucose level was down to 108 this morning. She's only been on this eating plan for a couple of days and look at the "already" progress for her.

Health is mine to own.

Thanks Holly for introducing me to this way of eating. I did my research after pigging out on Thanksgiving & hitting about 222 pounds. Then I cleared out my kitchen & pantry. My son was happy to get all the groceries I brought to him & his girlfriend. I felt a little guilty , but knew they would eat the carbage anyway. Next I set up a my fitness pal account with the macros Holly listed. On Christmas day I began and this morning I am 208. with 5 inches off my waist. Of course, my coworkers think I am crazy and going to kill myself. Glad I have this team to talk without judgement.

I certainly don't eat bread, or sugar, or other things which are high carb on their own. The highest I get are small bits of peanut butter or dark chocolate (or both together).

But I never have bread or sugar. I take the croutons out of any Caesar salad. I eat bun-less burgers at Wendy's. I never eat french fries or other forms of potato. I never eat rice.

I'm not exactly saving my carbs, or maybe I am, no I'm just avoiding the carbs that are easy to avoid and which I don't really like eating anymore.

Good to see you Caroline!!! I dont use my carbs on anything non keto..just the cream, cream cheese, and green vegs. and once in a while a biscuit or 2 net gram atkins bar. I'm usually under 10 g carbs a day...many days under 5.

Hi everyone,
Just want you to know I am still here. On Keto way of eating.
Lost 4.2 # last week. I try to keep my macros like Holly said, but I do not
use any of my carbs on sugar or bread, as it can certainly make me crave
them again in a couple hours.
One day I hope to contribute more on here, but do know I check in on you guys
and appreciate everything you share.

its funny what different descriptions you can find.
I have read that keto is 70% fat, 20% protein, 5% carb.
others say the numbers you posted. Go into Maria mind body you will find a calculator.
most of everything i've read says NO carrots or any veg that grows underground. above ground non starcy are fine. then theres the people that say no carbquik. my son, who has been VERY successful, uses carbquik (as do i occasionally) and he has a lindor truffle every night...its 5 carbs. I choose not to waste 5 of my 20 carbs on something that small..lol.
if you check ketovangelist, they are insistant that the term IIFIMM(if it fits in my macrros) is totally incorrect and you arent truly keto if you do that.
my deal is, i dont ridicule anyone. you want carbquik? go fo it. you have a bad day? yeah it takes time to get back into ketosis...but you made the choice,,and good on you for getting back to it!!
i have friends who have seen my success up to now and decide to try...and when they arent seeing results we go over stuff...and all i can tell them is what i've learned. and then tell them that i sure dont know a lot about it..only whats helped me. (one of those things was having a carbquik biscuit at Thanksgiving....totally helped me stay on track..i served them to everyone and they loved them and never knew they were low carb!!) ii love cream cheese pancakes, but i cant have them more than once a month or i gain. one friend of mine has them 3 times a week and loses..a LOT...every week!! Point is, which i think you said well..its personal. what works for one might not work for another. i can have cheese and lose..my daughter in law cant....wish it was not that way.
thank you, as always, for your posts...you are helping many!!!

Thank you, James.
I never add sugar to anything and avoid any sweets and known carb-laden food...no potatoes, rice, bread, pasta. Zero.
But it is not easy to avoid carrots (I do limit them) and peas and th occasional apple.
I mostly eat broccoli and cabbage for veggies and lots of eggs and cheese and meat.
I start my day with a big spoonful of coconut oil with a bit of natural peanut butter for the taste.
I have done low carb many times but it is HFLC that keeps me happy and helps me lose weight.
Diet doctor.com has been a font of info for me.
As have you!

First of all eating Keto means macro's something like this:
Fat (60% to 75% of your calories)
Protein (15% to 30%)
Carbs (under 10%)

If your diet is about 1800 calories a day, and you have about 30 grams of carbs, that is about 120 calories from carbs and under 10%. This is pretty typical.

So are there any foods that are off limits eating Keto? Not really. You could put sugar in your tea if you really wanted to. So about 4 grams of sugar in teaspoon of sugar in your cup of tea. But sugar is totally nutritionally empty, just pure calories, so I never add sugar to anything.

What about arrowroot as a thickener? Well arrowroot is about 88% carbs and if you discount fibre, about 85%. Similar for corn starch is a little higher at about 90% of its weight being carbs. So I guess like sugar, you might get away with small quantities, like a teaspoon of it in a serving size.

Here are a few food item percentages:
rice (28%)
potatoes (18%)
carrots (6%)
green beans (5%)
broccoli (4%)

I personally eat a few carrots in other things, or as a small serving. It is getting closer to the territory where I start to eat smaller and smaller quantities. I'm not super careful about carrots, but I don't eat big heaps of them either.
