Today my back was giving me a bit of trouble, so my elliptical workout was not as challenging nor as enjoyable as it might have been. However, as long as I can move and endure the sharp twinges of pain, I should keep exercising.

Watched a segment about anti-aging creams on the Today show.

I just love the elliptical! I never get used to it as I interval train with it. But throughout my health problems, when I had to give up other forms of exercising, I have always been able to use the elliptical! When my knees went bad and I could no longer walk, I was still able to go on the elliptical! When I had dizziness problems with a treadmill, it did not affect me on the elliptical! I love the high intense workout you get for no impact its the best!! I would highly recommend it for any RA sufferers!

**OUCH**

Well, yep, it's the Life Fitness elliptical that hurts my foot. I did 15 minutes and I could feel it.

Then I went on to the Precor machine and boy, could I tell the difference!

I try to take time off of the elliptical over the weekends, and mix it up with some other kind of activity. I am looking forward to that, believe it or not!

Be careful with the workout. I remember you saying something about the LF making you foot rise. I do that when I am using my arms too. I also try to take my hands off sometimes and when I do that I try to only move from my hips down. I can actually go faster that way but it is harder than using my arms to push/pull too.

I got two elliptical workouts in again today. One in the morning before work and one at lunch. I usuall don't use the ellipticals on Friday because I work 4 nine hours days and then a 4 hour day on Friday so I am off at 11:30 and anxious to get home to start my weekend. I may try to get a morning seesion in though.

I weigh-in on Fridays mornings and I don't have a warm fuzzy feeling about tomorrow's weigh-in. Time will tell I guess.

Get some rest tonight.

Tomorrow, I am going to try to use the ellipticals made by Life Fitness, rather than the Precor elliptical. I'm getting kind of ... bored... with the Precor and I'd like to try something different.

I injured my foot on the Life Fitness ellipticals earlier this year, so I may not be able to stay on for very long. But I'd like to try 10 minutes, maybe 15.

Stephanie -

If you know the manufacturer of the elliptical, you can call them up and ask them if they have a list of repair people who fix ellipticals or if you think you can fix it yourself, perhaps they could send you a manual. (Have you looked online for a manual for your elliptical?)

Otherwise, i would suggest calling up a health club and asking them for the # of who services their ellipticals. See if they would be willing to share that information with you.

You will probably need to open up the base and see if there is a part that is broken. I might do that first, to see if there is an obvious solution. Maybe the belt has slipped a bit and just needs to be adjusted.

Are any of these options feasible for you?

Sorry to hear about your elliptical machine Steph! I am lucky because I have access to a small gym at work that has 3 elliptical machines.

I got an extra elliptical workout in before work this morning so I am off to a good start today. Will try to get another one in at lunch. Volunteer at the hospital tonight so it will be a long day but it's Wednesday and downhill after lunch today. YEAH!
Have a great day!

Hello,

Got my elliptical workout & strength training in at lunch. I had to convinve myself to go. I was sleepy and wanted to take a short nap instead. I went though and I feel better about myself for going.

I'm ready for some cooler weather too. It's been hot here in Texas.

Take care everyone and keep on keeping on!

Probably residual from whatever bug you had last week. Something like that can really take a lot out of a body. I'm glad you got some rest.

I think people underestimate the importance of rest. And not just sleep, although that's a great thing too. But just simple rest.

Did my daily elliptical and then went to the grocery store. It's going to be humid and warm here in Chicago, so I'm very thankful that the elliptical gives me a good workout without having to bear the brunt of the weather.

I just had my yearly physical so I think I'm okay. Probably just nerves. This is going to sound stupid but I almost liked the pain because it kept me from wanting to eat. I am doing better today. I just hope I can keep off the extra weight I have lost since the weekend when the stomach problems/dizzyness started.

I worked out n the elliptical Monday and Tuesday and plan to go again today at lunch.

Good job on getting some great workouts. I understand completely how tought the blah weeks can be.

Take good care of yourself.

Wishing you a happy healthy day today.

Could definitely be nerves/anxiety. Has the doctor checked it out yet? I know when I get extremely stressed, my stomach churns up so much acid that I start to feel sick to my stomach. I don't feel the burn of heartburn though.

So I know when I got something big coming up, to start poppin' the Pepcid.

I've had a couple of great elliptical workouts this week. Most welcomed after a couple of "blah" weeks.

Sounds like the flu or food poisoning.

And folks, even feeling like he was a spinning top, Gene managed to get in a workout on the elliptical.

I'm telling you, it's a fantastic machine -- allows you to work through just about any ailment!

Hello Everyone!

I got dizzy Friday night (alcohol was not involved). Woke up Saturday feeling like I had been punched in the stomach. Didn't eat anything Saturday until supper. Ate a little breakfast Sunday morning and again that evening. Still not feeling 100% yet (of course at my age I may never get there). Good news is I lost 3 pounds over the weekend but I'm not entering it until Friday because most times when something like this happens I gain it all back pretty quick.

Got in my elliptical workout at noon.

I hope everyone has a good day and a great week.

Happy Friday Everyone!

I haven't been sleeping good this week but finally got a good night's sleep last night. Did all four of my elliptical workouts this week at lunch even though I would have rather took a nap. Paid off, down another pound this morning.

I hope everyone has a great day and a wonderful weekend.

Today was my day off from everything fitness. I am looking forward to getting back to it tomorrow. I heard about a website that you can track how many steps you take in a day and it will map out where you would go across the country. I can't seem to find it again. Does anyone know of a website like this? Also, does anyone know if you can count your revolutions on the elliptical as steps?

Hi LD!

Good job on the workout! I can always tell too. Somedays it is all I can do to convince myself to go workout and other times everything just seems to click and all of a sudden I look down and go wow and start trying for a new personal best.

Enjoy your church activities today and your bike ride tonight!

After 2 days off, going to the gym felt like such a luxury :-)

I also did a great workout on the elliptical. I can tell because the calorie / mile / strides # is always higher when the workout is great. :-)

I have some church activities today & tonight. I am hoping to ride my bike to the one in the afternoon.

Hello everyone,

Busy day today. Shopping with Donna this morming. Went to see the movie Julie & Julia this afternoon and then back home to can 8 pints and 3 half pints of bread & butter pickles. Grilled a steak for supper after that. We're tired!

:) 3rd day in a row of my new exercise routine. I had a great workout day today. I got up at 6 am and did 32 min on my elliptical's endurance mode (which kicks up the resistance and motion/stride levels). Yesterday, I did the endurance mode but was so wiped out by it on the highest levels that I had to stop 3 or 4 times.

Today, I told myself that I could slow down on the highest levels, even to a near-crawl, but I had to keep moving, keep burning calories. It worked! I moved during the entire 32 minutes.

So, then, at work, some personal things were bugging me and I wished I had my workout clothes to get on an elliptical and pound through dealing with what was bugging me. But I do have tennis shoes here, so I put 'em on and planned on walking for 30 min outside on this beautiful day.

I ended up walking for 60 min and dealt with 2 issues that were bugging me, and burned more calories to boot!

I'm going to bring in workout clothes to put in my gym locker here at work in case this happens again on a day of inclement weather.

I love having my elliptical. I do well if I can get up and start exercising. I start out half-asleep but by the time I wake up, I'm over halfway done so I power through it!

Glad to hear others are enjoying the elliptical! :)

~Kelly~

I had a great workout today. I did intervals, varying resistance levels. I have to say, it kicked my donkey, but I had a great time doing it.

I'm glad I did it when I did it, because by the time I left the gym, all 4 of the ellipticals (Precor, withOUT moving handlebars) were taken!

It has been a good exercise day for me. I got in my usual elliptical at lunch today but also got the opportunity to go walking two additional times today to meetings.

LD - an elliptical in the corner of a rec room to use while you watch TV would be so cool.

Gene -- it has been my dream to have a small gym in my home, in the basement. Due to some financial twists and turns, I don't think that's going to happen any time soon. And quite frankly, I'm having second thoughts about it. I think I do much better going to the gym. So now I'm thinking that I'd like to make the basement a rec room -- and just have an elliptical in the corner that I can use while watching TV.

Don't tell my husband though; I keep changing my mind about this, especially on days when I can't make it to the gym.

I did 50 minutes in a row! Have not been able to do that in quite some time. I generally like to break it up, but since I have to work tonight I forged on and it was fantastic.

Good for you, Gene! I think a midday workout is great! I think I will start doing that once my kids return to school.

I ***LOVE*** the Life Fitness ellipticals. However, I have strong reason to believe that they are behind my problems with my foot/arch. I notice that I flex my foot a lot (i.e. lift up my heals) during the course of the stride.

I may try again in a couple of more months, perhaps at lower resistance levels. It's too bad too, because the LF machines fit me so well.

So I'm stuck using the Precor -- ha ha, I should have it so bad!

(Actually, I'm very fortunate to have both options available to me at my bare-bones gym.)

Which just goes to show: You can have a high-end, very nice elliptical and have it not be right for your body type, just for some odd reason. Definitely a "buyer beware" thing!

Have a good evening and happy elliptical dreams!

I got in a good elliptical workout in today at lunch.

I have been on some ellipticals that were hard to use but I am lucky that we have 3 really nice Lifetime ellipticals in a little gym where I work.

Thanks for being you Lady_Donkey. I love reading your posts and blogs. You have a great and very real outlook on life and I admire you for that.

Take care everyone and have a good evening.

There's no emoticon for a blushing smile but if there were, I would use it. I am humbled by your praise.

And I had a great workout on the elliptical today too! Woo-woo!

LADY_DONKEY is an inspiration for me. I wish I had her enthusiasm!

I had a good weekend. Helped my wife, Donna (SPINNINGKNIGHT) start her a SparkPage. She has been on SP awhile but never had a page until now.

We went to see The Ugly Truth at the movies this weekend. It is rated R so don't take kids but it was a very funny romantic comedy.

Have a great day everyone.

Thank you for the responses Cek and Lady_Donkey! It is truly appreciated and helpful! At this point in my journey I am looking for more of the cardio experience rather than endurance and strength training. Endurance will be a long-term goal, but fat burning is more important at the moment.

Have a great weekend!

Lady_Donkey,

Thank you for the responses you gave to Vanilla. Good stuff.

I read a SP article on which to do first Cardio or Strength training. Basically it said to do what is most import to you first. In other words give it you most energy. With me it is cardio because I just want to maintain muscle but lose fat and the calorie burn from cardio is greater. But that is my preference. I know a lot of men who would do just the opposite.

Same with the way I do cardio. I use to do 30 to 60 at a time but I am having problems with my artifical knee so now i have to break it up in 15 minute sessions at different times to reduce the pain.

Another example is that some people would tell me I need to do pushups on toes and hands. Because i have no disc between L3/4 the pain is too great to do that so i have to find different alternatives. Finding an exercise program that works for me is what i have to focus on and I have to be honest with myself.

I am not a young man in great shape. Trying to keep up with what other people do will only hurt me more. Being a man, it is extremely difficult for me to say I can't do something but that is a fact of life for me so I do what I can with what i have.

I hope you have a great weekend.

Vanilla -- you break up your time on the elliptical but you do them back-to-back. That's kind of the same thing as doing consecutive time.

I would do that quite often when I was following the pre-programmed routes on the elliptical. I would do 30 min of a steep hill and then 30 of intervals. OR something like that.

So to answer your question: It doesn't matter.

When it starts to matter is this:
1. If you insert weight training in between the two sessions on the elliptical. Not much of a difference, but your heart rate does go down while you switch activities and then back up again.

2. If you do 2 sessions at different times of the day, e.g. one in the morning and one at night. Again, you're getting your heart rate up twice a day instead of just once.

So you're not getting the endurance training but you're still getting all the weight loss and cardio benefits.

Others on this page are probably better experts on this but here is my OPINION:

Do what works for you. Push too hard and you run the risk of injuring yourself and or burnout. Don't push enough and you won't get any benefits. Finding what is the right amount for YOU is the goal.

I hope you have a great day and a greatr weekend.

Peace.

I generally do 2 sets of 20 minutes or 30 minutes back-to-back. I stretch and do some strength training. Now I'm wondering if I should just do it straight through since that what it seems that most of you do. Is doing 40-60 minutes continously more effective than breaking them up into 2 sets?
