Barb,

I'm a little (or a lot) behind on my spark teams!

But I still want to add my thoughts and prayers for your son and your family. He comes from good stock--I can tell!

May his recovery be swift and full. May you be with him to support him soon. That is my prayer.

Aww, thanks for your kind comments. Yes. As of tonight now he is using a cane! I cannot believe it. He is kicking butt.

He is in Fairbanks (Ft. Wainwright). I think there's an Air Force Base nearby as well, and yes, there is also an Army base in Anchorage (Ft. Richardson I think??)

Yes, John got the Purple Heart and the Army Medal of Commendation for Valor and Heroism. When he was shot, he feel to the ground, but managed to fire off some rounds. He saved his 7 comrades. Just an unbelievable situation.

I couldn't agree more. it is absolutely unthinkable to me to use an 8 yr. old as a decoy, which is clearly what they did. I can't even think about it. It makes me nauseated.

Thanks for your kindness.

HUGS,
Barb

Ooooohhh Barb!!

You Don't Need To Apologize!!!

We're all so thankful that you are not a new member of the Gold Star Mothers!!

I liked reading about John's attitude about walking. And elsewhere later you posted he's "crutch walking" so that's a step in the right direction.

Is he in Anchorage? or near there? or the base in Fairbanks??

(kicking over an idea that might help you out when you do get to travel out but I need to chat with my other friend up there about that....).

Purple Heart? That's super!! And it totally stinks that they are using children in the Afghan side to shoot at the grown men in the USA Military. Who needs "The Hunger Games"? It's already lived out in these terrorist nations.

Hugs!

Please be assured our prayers are with you and your son and your family for a long time. You will be remembered daily. You are a hero, same as your son. Your mother's heart must be so sore and unsteady, yet you march on for your son.
With all the prayers, you will surely be uplifted with hopeful news very soon.

You have been ---- and continue to be --- an awesome and inspiring source of Challenge motivation and energy. You have already accomplished enough, and shared enough, to earn a place of honor in the 100 Days of Summer Hall of Fame (if we had a Hall of Fame).

I consider you the the Queen of the weekly challenges.

Right now his computer is in transit from Afghanistan. So until then it's phone calls and texts. But the other problem right now is security as he goes thru debriefing I guess. But I'm grateful for ANY kind of communication. Thanks for caring. HUGS

Barb,
Thank you so much for sharing. So glad to hear you have finally got some information on what happened and what injuries you son has. I know it will be very difficult until mom can lay eyes on him. Would they be able to allow you to SKYPE or some kind of video conference?

May God continue to bless you and your son. Take care,
Paul

It has been my honor and privilege to have participated with such wonderful people in this summer challenge. As many of you know, my families whole world was turned upside down on Sunday morning with the text msg. that my son John had been shot in Afghanistan.
This has been an extremely heart wrenching, faith testing, unimaginable thing and has consumed my heart and soul.

First a little update. As of Monday morning, John was transferred from the Army hospital in Afghanistan back to the hospital on his post in Alaska. Up to that point all we knew (which was very little) came from the few texts he was able to send us. What we knew was:

His unit was on partol. While on their way back from patrol down the road they were traveling, they were ambushed by 25 Afghanis. It was my son and 7 comrades against 25 Afghanis. A kid armed with an AK47 shot my son. Obviously it was multiple wounds as that's a machine gun. He was able to open fire and there were casualties. Apparently while on the ground a grenade exploded as well. John doesn't remember anything after he fired off rounds.

His actions apparently saved the lives of his 7 comrades. The Afghanis who ambushed them apparently did not fare so well.

We subsequently got a few more texts from DS indicating that he'd been shot in his leg and had surgery. When we finally got an actual phone call from him Tuesday (after calling our Congressman, because we had literally no information about his injuries) he shared more . . . more than a Mom ever wants to know, for sure.

His injuries: bullet wounds to the right leg. One bullet had lodged behind his knee . . . which already had a stress fracture. I don't know how, but the Dr. told him that the bullet re-united the two pieces of the kneecap where the fracture was. That part was good. His thigh and shin bone (femur and fibula) had to be screwed back together, however.

In this conversation we learned of the grenade explosion . . . first we knew of it. This resulted in shrapnel wounds in my son's back. I do not know the status of that, and still waiting word.

As far as his leg goes, John indicted that IF he walked, it would be only short distances with pain. My head and heart were just screaming. He is only 20 . . . turned 20 on the 10th of August. But John said that he had stood up for 3 seconds on Tuesday morning, so we are hoping that is a positive thing. In my nursing brain, you simply cannot have multiple gunshot wounds without having severe muscle, tissue, bone and nerve damage. **SIGH**

He did say he can move his toes, feet, leg and has feeling and sensation. That part is good.
He said "I am going to prove them wrong about the walking." Ok, so I am really proud he said that. Taht's exactly the spirit he needs to fight this.

Emotionally, for sure he has a lot to work through and he's doing that daily. He was awarded the Purple Heart and the Army Medal of commendation for Valor and Heroism as his actions saved his comrades. We are all very proud of that. But at what cost??? Sad.

We have all the information to travel to see him, but he does not want that yet. He said that he is not in an area where we could see him nor could he leave to see us. so, at this time we're respecting his wishes and will wait. In the meantime he did indicate that he will probably be able to come home briefly in December. I pray so! By then, if not, I am sure he'll be in a better position if we go up to see him. But clearly right now he has to focus on getting physically, emotionally and spiritually whole with physical therapy and therapies.

I could NOT have made it through this trying time without all the love and support of fellow Sparkies. Definitely not and I want to thank each and every one of you for the support.

However, this long winded post also is to tell you that I cannot finish out this challenge. There are lots of things we have to be involved in right now to support our son and make sure he's getting the best of care so he reaches the potential, whatever it may be. That is my personal challenge right now.

I will still be sparking, I will still blog recipes and share when I can.

HUGS to each and every one of you and I am with you in spirit.

Barb
