Gum really helps me, but I'm trying to learn to just leave the place where I am when the craving hits. And with me, it's usually a craving. I find that if I can just walk away, I'll be fine after a few minutes.

I TOTALLY understand. I have been feeling that way the last couple of days. But I am learning to go take a walk, like ROCKONIOWA, and chew gum and brush my teeth, and use mouthwash. And, actually the hunger does go away. It is in the mindset. You both are amazing and awesome and we ARE doing this. I am going to find another link I think is interesting. It is also a habit. And habits can be changed, But it takes time. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon I found one! Also, after the article on the bottom are more links and comments, which I think are helpful. www.sparkpeople.com/resource/nutriti

PATTIE this is the one I have trouble with:

Hunger is never an emergency. It is only mildly uncomfortable. I can tolerate it. It will come and go.

When I'm truly hungry my mind is set on feeding myself as if the kind of hunger I experience is going to be a fatal disease. It's not as if HUNGER is the same as STARVING but I have them side by side in my mind. I know thin ppl that get hungry but for one reason or another don't stop to eat. THey don't seem to have the anxiety that hunger causes for me.

I have to remember... it's not an emergency and in my circumstance is no where near a fatal problem. I CAN TOLERATE IT. I usually just don't.

Don't take yourself so seriously. No one else does.

The definition of insanity is to keep doing the same thing all the while expecting different results.

Timing has a lot to do with the success of a rain dance.

The last couple of weeks have really put this to the test for me! I find that I am wanting to go for walks when I am stressed as opposed to eating. I really attribute that to the logs on SparkPeople. I would much rather log fitness minutes than food. The trackers really have kept me accountable and also help me make better choices for my body.

Other things that help with stress release are deep breaths and writing. Often times if I write down what I feel, I get it out of my system, and I can refocus on what is important. I chew gum from time to time too, or brush my teeth, because that at least keeps me from eating!

Instead of giving myself reasons why I can't, I give myself reasons why I can. Unknown Author

I found a few tips to help in dealing with stress besides food. I hope it helps. We can do it!

Walking for five minutes is better than walking for zero minutes. Exercise is essential even if I don't do very much at first. I can build up the amount that I do over time, but I have to start somewhere.
-------------------
Hunger is never an emergency. It is only mildly uncomfortable. I can tolerate it. It will come and go.
---------------------
I really do deserve credit for breaking old habits and it is essential for building my confidence. Once my confidence grows everything will become so much easier.
-------------------------
If I want to lose weight permanently, I can't make exceptions. I'd rather be thinner. I can't overeat on week-ends or any other time.
-----------------------
I have to develop the habit of eating every bite slowly, while sitting down, so I can fully enjoy it. It is worth developing this habit, so that I can have a lifetime of being thinner.
---------------------------------
I'm not going to let any minor setback ruin everything I've accomplished. One mistake doesn't ruin my diet, but falling back into old habits will.
I will recommit to my diet right here, right now!
----------------------------
Exercise is not negotiable for good health. It needs to be a daily lifetime habit and I need to make it so. The hardest part is getting started. I'll feel so much better when I'm done. So get started!
------------------------
OH WELL! I'm going to ignore this craving. I'm going to do something and let it subside. I'm turning my attention to something else, like exercise.

Also, a massage is really great and helpful. Sometimes you can get some good rates on one from a school. It is definitely worth checking into!

I also use a "stress" ball to squeeze when I feel stressed. It is actually something I got at the Dollar Store and it is just like a tennis ball. You can even use a tennis ball. This article is great on explaining it. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

I no longer run to the food or my smokes to deal with stress, instead I have a few different releases. I carry a journal with me EVERYWHERE, or I go for a walk, or I listen to my music and dance a little.

Thanks Patti! Today I plan to work on reminding myself to take 5 long relaxing breaths throughout the day... at least 4 times. I'm working on setting up concrete goals for myself and making myself accountable!

I hope this doesn't sound wierd or bad, but if I'm stressed, playing some video games tames my mind a bit, epesially scary survivor games that totally absorb me, lol

On the other end of the spectrum, I like to read a couple chapters from a good book or yoga. Haveing a good stretch always helps.

I joined the Stress Busters forum, and have learned some breathing and relaxation techniques. I also have started to journal again. I find these things, and a big pack of sugarless gum, are the ideal solutions for me. emoticon

I find that exercise has really helped me deal with stress. Now instead of turning to food, I go for a walk, or keep my hands busy and do some crossword puzzles. How about you?
