I am enjoying the Challenge this week. I did the Bikini Challenge last spring and the videos are even better for this one! It helps me get back on track after holiday eating....

I found the answer to my question! It was listed in this forum a couple of days ago. I should search for "intervals" to find the 8 minute athletic intervals workout. The instructions that I had printed out at the start of this challenge was incorrect. I think I have everything correct now.

I'm trying to make sure I have everything tracked correctly. I think I have the strength training tracked correctly (so far). For the Day 1 video, how do I enter the cardio intervals workout? In the January Jumpstart FAQs, it says to search for "SparkPeople" in the "add cardio" section of the tracker and select "8-minute athletic intervals workout." When I do that, all I get is the Spark Fit, Firm, and Fired Up DVD. What am I doing wrong?

Thank you, Sarah. The more I read I found the answer to my question. That's where I have been logging my fitness minutes. I am enjoying this challenge. It is good to get back on track.

CGDINASIA, The only place you are required to track your fitness minutes is on your fitness page. You can join the team goals at the bottom of the team page, but that is not mandatory. Hope you're enjoying the challenge so far!

Do I need to log those fitness minutes on this team somewhere, or just on my fitness page?

JAMIEA8 - For the contest/weekly prizes, you need to log a minimum of 200 fitness minutes each week, so it doesn't matter when you start. For the final prize at the end of the month, you need to log a minimum of 500 minutes for the month.

GAIL436 - You don't currently have your Strength Tracker set to show on your Fitness Tracker page. To have that show on there, you need to go to your fitness tracker, click on the "Change fitness goals" button at the top of the page, then check the box for strength training. You will then need to set up the details for that (which days you want to strength train, whether you want to create your own workouts or have SP generate those for you, etc). Once you set that up, make sure you click on the "Save your changes" button at the bottom of the page. After you do that, you should see your Strength Tracking section on your fitness tracker page, which is where the Challenge's day's 2-7 videos will be tracked.

Minutes are counted on for the Day you record them on your tracker, but by the week on the My SparkAmerica Fitness Minutes. The week starts on Sunday.

HEATERSENKE - I checked your account and that video is listed several times in your strength training tracker on Wednesday, so it did get added. However, because you are having SP generate your strength workouts, you need to check off the boxes for the 1st and 2nd part of that video so it will get counted in your tracker.

HEATERSENKE - It doesn't matter what day you do any video, you just have to make sure you are posting it correctly, to get the results you want. The video will automatically, be put on the Current Day you are logging it, unless you select to Add to a Different Day (hyperlink below the tracking button). Then you have to use the 'Back" arrow on the side of the 'Day' on the tracker to go back to the day you are actually tracking to check the boxes.

Hope this helps.

Hi Everyone. I just have a quick question that has probably already been asked so I apologize in advance.

I joined the challenge on Dec 29th but started on Jan 1. I didn't quit the challenge and start over. As I track my fitness minutes, it is counting them starting on Sunday - which is great because that is when I started. However, for the contest part of it, are my minutes counted by everyone starting on Sunday or is it calculated based off of the Dec 29th start date?

Thanks so much for your help! I just want to make sure I am doing this right!

GAIL436 - I don't if it's because you have a MAC since I'm a PC user, but I do know that when you track strength videos you won't see fitness minutes on the tracker. You will see them in your SparkAmerica Fitness Minutes box on the right hand side of your start page. You get 5 minutes credit for every line item on the Strength tracker, so 10 minutes for both sections of a strength video.

It doesn't work to track the fitness video's. Is it because I have a mac? I do have an old PC laptop if that might work. It even asked me if I want to track it for the day it is, but no exercise shown on the tracker. No calories calculated.

MS-YOLANDA, Are you referring to the "Pilates Exercise Principles" video. That is the introduction video and it is on youtube

www.youtube.com/watch?v=1VzmV0ZxK9E

Hope you were able to add the video to your tracker. The easiest way is to go to the video on SparkPeople and scroll to the bottom of the video page. There is a button that says "Add to Fitness Tracker". If you click on that it will add the video to the strength training section of your fitness page.

Glad to hear that you are enjoying the videos!

AGNESJOHN1, It seems that the older videos can't be made bigger to fill the entire screen, but if you go to youtube.com you can make the screen bigger there. Just click on the link at the bottom of the video page that says "Help spread the Spark by rating our video". This will take you to the video on youtube. Hope that helps!

It was day 2 I believe, the first 9 minute lower body video and I tried to add it to Wednesday. I tried several times and got the same result every time. Can they only be tracked on the day that they represent? Perhaps that's my problem because it was the day two video on day three.

RE: PILATES LEG TONING VIDEO

I did a search of this message board for 'pilates' hoping not to repeat a question you have already answered and came up with 0 results.

Using YouTube: I added all the videos listed to a playlist so I could access them from a streaming device that has a large screen. I did not know until I played the Pilates Leg Toning Video that there was an introduction I needed to view, that, as of this posting, is not on the SparkPeople YouTube Channel. (Just a 'heads up' since I already did this, my first Pilates workout, and did OK).

Also, the workout is not on the list of SP Videos to add to the Fitness Tracker. I searched it a few times before I came back to the Challenge page and saw the link for the Intro video and the link to add the workout.
emoticon

Still luvin' the 10-Minute Videos. They are challenging and the variety is great!

Thanks, Coach Nicole!

Heatersenke, not sure if this is what you are doing, but please know that to get it to add to the fitness tracker you can't just press on the Day 1, Day 2, etc. link. You need to page down until you see the "Add to Fitness Tracker" button and press that.

IWILLICANIAM, It's normal to feel increased hunger when starting a new exercise program. I would suggest going over your nutrition and making sure that you're balancing out your carbs and protein to ensure that you'll stay full longer. Eating a meal that is high in fiber will also help you stay full longer. If you aim for low calorie, high volume meals this should help you stay full longer. For example, at dinner time make sure you're getting a protein source and then pair it will tons of vegetables and a grain. Vegetables are low calorie so you can eat lots of them and still stay in range.

Eating smaller meals more frequently will help as well. My body is hungry every 2-3 hours so that's how often I eat. My meals are smaller, but that allows me to eat more frequently. My body is so used to this now that I honestly don't think I could change it. My meals are usually around 350 calories each and then I fill the rest of my calories in with three snacks a day. Hope this gives you some ideas!

I am on day 5 of the challenge, and am having a strange issue. For some reason I am suffering from extreme hungriness at night. I eat a 500 calorie breakfast, and then workout, etc. Then I have a nice lunch however around supper time, I have this outrageous feeling of hunger. Even if my stomach is not hungry my mind is telling me that I need to eat more as I have not eaten enough. Is this a normal problem? What should I do? Should I stick to my calorie ranges or should I keep eating until I feel full at night? Please, I need some help with this!!

I am experiencing a problem with the videos. When I link to add one to my fitness log I don't get an error or anything, but they never show up. I must be doing something wrong or misunderstanding something, but it seems pretty straight forward.

Can you eat a small snack before you leave the office? That could give you some energy but not be too filling. You should always have something within 30 minutes of working out to refuel your muscles. Check spark recipes for healthy shake recipes. I use www.oxygenmag.com for healthy recipes. I need some suggestions please. I work full time. So when I come home from work around 5:30-6:00 I make dinner and then spend a little time with the kids before they go to bed. So this is my workout time. I usually start between 8-8:30. The problem is is that when I eat dinner I feel too full or that I am going to get sick, therefore, I don't put as much effort into my workout. If I eat afterwards I'm not hungry and it is so close to bedtime. Is there a shake or something you guys recommend that is light enough not to make me feel sick or be to full before bed? Unfortunately morning workouts aren't an option. I'm not a morning person and just can't get up.
Thanks for suggestions!

Don't have a coffee table at the moment either. Unfortunately the kitchen, living, laundry and new bathroom are under construction. I only have a small room to work out in. Thanks for your help, I will do the best I can with what I have, the bed.

XENA1956, What about using a coffee table to sit on instead of a chair? I often use my coffee table for lots of exercises in place of a weight bench. It would also work instead of a chair in the Day 3 video.

I am trying to catch up with the videos and was able to do "Lower Body Sculpt" and Bootcamp Video day 3. My problem is I have no chairs to use when doing the exercises. I used the end of the bed, as best I could. Is there some modifications that could be done on the floor when doing the chair exercises?

So do I have this right? if I repeat each video, that is do each 10-12 min video twice, it should show up on my tracker in four segments, each one representing 5 min. of activity, with two representing the video done once, and for representing the video done twice, there would be four entries. Is his correct? I think , if so, I tracked it correctly today. thanks!

MWILLAIMS5775, It's best if you not do the Day 2 video today anyways since tomorrow's video is lower body too and you shouldn't be working the same muscle group two days in a row. If you would like to do today's video twice instead that's fine. Good luck with the challenge!

THINSTATEOFMIND, Michelene is correct in her explanation of why SparkPeople doesn't give calories burned totals for strength training. I just wanted to add that a heart rate monitor won't give an accurate number for calories burned either. Basically if you use a heart rate monitor it will highly overestimate your calories burned since your heart rate may be elevated, but it's in a totally different way than it is while doing cardio.

Even though there is no way to determine calories burned, think of strength training more as a bonus, a very important bonus. It doesn't burn very many calories in comparison to cardio, but their are definite benefits in burning fat, shaping your body and boosting your metabolism.

Here are the ask an expert answers regarding strength training:

SRAPP707, Definitely! The fitness minutes accumulated from doing the videos will help you with your eligibility for prizes.

That does explain why they aren't being added in the tracker. But the big question is do the minutes count for the prize drawings...?

SRAPP707, Michelene has given a good explanation of the fitness minutes. Are you referring to the minutes displayed at the bottom on your fitness page when saying that your daily total shows as 0? If so, the reason is that your strength training minutes are not added there. The totals that appear on your fitness page at the bottom are strictly for cardio. As Michelene explained, your strength training minutes are added to your SparkAmerica Fitness Minutes which you will see displayed on the right hand side of the fitness page. You don't have to change anything in respect to sets and reps. I looked at your tracker and you're tracking everything correctly. Hope that makes sense!

SRAPP707 I added the videos to my tracker and removed them so I could see where the numbers update. The ones on my tracker stayed the same, but the numbers in my Spark America fitness box were changing up and down respectively. It's capturing it in my overall fitness minutes for the month.

Sarah or Coach Denise if you have a better explanation than I do as to why this is the case, would you please respond.

When tracking the Team Goal Exercise for 10 minutes every day. Is that cardio or all fitness minutes?

Michelene- you said

"SRAPP707 Your fitness minutes will automatically be updated. Each time a strength entry is added to the Fitness Tracker, you will see your total fitness minutes go up by 5 minutes. So in the case where the video is entered with two segments, your minutes should go up by 10."

But that doesn't seem to be the case for me. I have them added to the tracker (the lower body sculpt part 1 and 2), but the minutes at the bottom at daily total say 0/0. do i have to do something to the sets/reps/weights section?

THINSTATEOFMIND - love your page name!

Entering Cardio on the Fitness Tracker will give you a general estimate of calories burned. Strength training does not give you estimated calories burned. There are too many variables generally involved in the ST for the system to calculate that. For example, how fast you lift, how much you lift, how long you rest between sets, if it was followed by a good warmup that already had your heart rate up, etc. etc.

If you wear a some type of heart rate monitor and know your calories burned, those can be entered into the system, but I would have to ask Denise. I personally haven't tracked calories burned during ST.

My question is do you have to do the SP videos to get credit for toning and cardio? I workout in the early AM while everyone else is sleeping so I do not have access to the computer at that time. So I typically do one of my own videos or one from Netflix. I also do the toning video's and I am wondering where do I log them to get credit.

Also, Why is it that strength exercises don't burn calories? I thought any movement burns calories.
