My husband and I are separated but I do have a very good friend that is so supportive and encouraging and never nagging. Does on occasion ask how it my exercise is going but at the same time is telling me what they are working on. We live many many miles away so visits are few and far between but when we do visit we enjoy the same healthy foods and make sure we do a lot of walking.

How does your significant other influence your exercise habits?

Positively
Negatively
Not at all
I don't have a significant other

Not at all....I pretty much do my own thing when it comes to my exercising.

I don't eat out very often but I will eat out Monday evening with my sister and her husband. The restaurant has food bars. Temptation, temptation but I will make it. So I will be looking at the salad bar, steamed veggies, fish (love fish) and fresh fruit.

Order a smaller portion if possible
Share the meal with my companion
Dressing on the side
We don't dine out often but do follow the above when we do.

How do you usually lighten up your restaurant orders?

Ask for no butter/oil
Ask for dressing/sauce on the side
Split the meal with a friend/take other half to-go
Replace meat with beans
Order smaller portion/half order
I don't eat out
Something else not listed here

I will order smaller portions.

Diet & Exercise. I know too many people that have had surgery and eventually regained the weight. You still have to learn how to eat right!!

I will stick with dieting. My son had surgery and it has worked very well for him. He has pushed me to have it as well. But I am to afraid of surgery. Some people do gain their weight back after surgery. I have tried to lose weight so many times my family doesn't believe I can do it. I would love to read some success stories of the 50 plus members losing more than 100 lbs. I've read the success stories of the 20 plus crowd. But what about us older people? Can we do it too? emoticon

This or That..... Weight-loss surgery or Diet and exercise?

Weight-loss surgery
Diet and exercise
Other

I would definitely go for the exercising along with proper nutrition. I'm not much into hospitals and surgery.

For me the stress is coming from health of family, personal health and money. My husband was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer almost 2 years ago. He is also diabetic, has heart issues and bulging disk in his back. Right now he is having breathing problems because the bottom of his right lung has collapsed. The doctor says it is weight related because the belly fat has pushed other organs into his lung. He will see a lung specialist tomorrow. I am hoping for some good news. I myself have COPD. I was diagnosed COPD a year ago this past November. I gave up my job the following February. However I am doing very well. I am on oxygen 24/7 but my breathing is pretty good. my biggest issue right now is my weight. I know my breathing will be so much better if I lose this weight. Losing weight will probably extend my life as well. Money is such an issue because we are on disability. I miss my job. If my health improves enough maybe I can work at least part time. Oh did I mention our 16 year old grandson came to live with us. I have adopted him. He is a good boy but he keeps me busy. I have adjust to all these changes in my life pretty well but there are times when it is more stressful than other times.

Which of the following is your biggest source of stress?

The economy
Family responsibilities
Health problems affecting family
Housing costs
Job stability
Money
Personal health concerns
Personal safety
Relationships
Work

For me it would be the economy and health of friends and family.

Reading, hearing and seeing other people's successes helps motavate me. It helps me believe I can lose this weight too. If I hear a weight loss program has worked for someone. then I want to try that program as well and see if it will work for me. Also I believe sharing my personal journey to acheiving my goal and reading other people's stories will help me remain motivated. That is why I joined SparkPeople.

For the most part, I view food as... one of the best things in life, I love to cook & bake & I make candy, I love to feed people & I love to eat. That makes my decision to lose weight something of an internal struggle. I need to start focusing on reducing my intake of my favorite things - refined carbohydrates & increase my fruit & veggie intake

I simply love to eat. I eat way more than necessary to make the experience of the taste of the food last longer. Which is probably viewing food as comfort.

Never was I overweight as a child/teenager - weighed 95 -110.. The weight came with years of stress with 2 children with disabilities, My son had a massive stroke when he was 3 and was not suppose to live, at 4 almost lost him a second time with Rocky Mountain Fever, and at 19 he was working on a back hoe- a part broke and threw him off and the back hoe ran over him - was not suppose to live through that--- My daughter has mild CP and was born without hip sockets and spend the first year of her life in a body cast. SO THERE WAS STRESS.

Now I have taken my life back.

I have always taken flu shot but not sure I will next year as I had a really bad reaction this year. Seems when you work in healthcare and are around all kinds of illnesses that you tend to build some natural immunities. If we didn't we would be sick all the time. I rarely get sick and hardly ever have even a cold,
