The more I think about it, the more I binge. The busier I am, the less I binge. It's like ...hmm, maybe I'm actually SATISFIED by the work I've done! Imagine that. Satisfaction from something other than goofy food.

What can I do for myself today?

Then Hubby gets to deal with the whistler and the crying babies. LOL....

I am struggling with food again, but luckily, I have a loose appt. now to call in to the health coach on fridays till I get this under control. Strangely today is the first day, I have not been wanting shove food in my face from 5pm on. I made a slushie today and froze it so I could have it for a treat this evening. It has all kinds of healthy stuff in it. Hoping it is a bit like eating ice cream.

Yesterday, I drank tea every time I wanted to overeat. It kept me well hydrated, but I still binged. Oh well, I will keep trying.

It's great advice, but not for us. Benadryl actually spins him up. And Valium does absolutely nothing. The issue is more with crying babies and people who whistle (why would anyone whistle on an airplane is beyond me, it's akin to singing at the top of your lungs - it's so piercing!)

So night flights would eliminate whistlers, but not the crying babies. And my husband HATES night flights. I LOVE them! I used to take the redeye all the time, sleep thru the flight, and arrive refrehsed and ready to roll. He can't sleep on planes, so for him it's just pure torture.

I am not sure if this is good advice, but I remember someone giving their child Benadryl, so they would sleep through the flights. It knocks me out. as long as I only take it about three times a month.

I can't imagine raging hormones for a teen boy and no way to understand or express what is going on and no peers to talk to about it. I think that is why football/sports are so popular in high school. The boys can work their aggression out in physical ways that don't get them into trouble.

Neighbor boy would get into fights with someone after school fairly frequently. Finally, some faculty got him involved in wrestling. It was a good fit.

Would it help if you flew at night? The red eye flights I have taken have been a lot quieter and less full.

The paradox here is that he LOVES to travel, he just can't seem to control himself lately (since about a week before his 16th birthday) and the switch flip from everything is OK to abject rage is fast and often seems to come out of nowhere. But with plane flights, there are 3 things that bug him that we'd be trapped for: whistling, dog barking, and babies crying. All 3 we've encountered on flights. When he was a bit smaller, it was manageable with earplugs in his ears covered by headphones outside his ears and sometimes he'd play something noisy (game or music) on an iPad or game system.

But now when he's upset by those things and they don't stop, he is likely to start trying to smash the plane walls or hit the seat in front of him, or break the tray table. So, we've been working for about 2 years on his self control and feel like we might be in a position to try travel again. Using his love of travel as a motivator for him to stay in control.

I think an equally big concern at this point is can he get ready in time that we don't miss our flights. He's really starting to dig in his heels about not transitioning from one activity to another, and refuses to get dressed/brush his teeth until after he does certain (long duration) things.

I'm considering putting him back on OCD meds, even though the side effects from those were pretty heinous.

That is a good plan. I think the more exposure to new experiences in small increments helps to desensitize. GD loves to travel and she does better at it than most people her age, but the idea of driving by herself throws her into severe anxiety.

When she was about 10 we flew with her to Texas to visit my sister. It was mostly the crush of bodies at the terminal that was setting off her anxiety. Luckily her way of coping at the time was to curl up in a ball on the floor and hide her head with her backside in the air. Not a good look for a ten year old. Works for age two not ten. Even though she had been released from her IEP that year, anxiety was and still is an issue. So as DD watched GD wind up, she got proactive and went to the desk, explained about the autism and we all got to board first before GD put her ostrich pose into practice. As you can see our brush with autism was pretty minimal. But as a three year old she had lost language twice and would not allow anyone to touch her shoes without lots of screaming and kicking. There was also the lining up of toys, lots of rocking, no eye contact. She sat her her stroller the first several months she was in Early Intervention. She was blessed with a really good program with the ESD and then later in the school system. She also had a desire to please and an incredible ability to memorize everything. Once we all figured that out it was just a matter of presenting things for her to learn in the fashion of rote memorization. Her lovely SLP was brilliant. She placed GD in with speech class with a group of boys who had great social language but couldn't pronounce words correctly. So GD would model the correct pronunciation of the target words then they would practice using them in sentences with each other. She learned to talk and make eye contact with other people while they had someone their own age to listen to for the sounds. Win/win.

Boy I am rambling. Hopefully your son will learn to love traveling. My sis and BIL who moved their kids every four years made it an adventure. I think that is the key. They all got hyped up about new places to explore, new friends to meet. I think that is why GD travels so well. My dad loved traveling and passed that gene on to all of us. Every trip is an adventure.

LOL, no, I live in Southern California, so an inch of slush would be a big deal to me. It's dark here by 5pm as well, but not that cold most of the time.

We're mostly going as a way to test our son's ability to fly on a short-ish trip.

Worst month ever to come to Portland. It is dark by 5PM and cold and rainy. Usually snows an inch of slush about the third week. But it is Oregon so you can always be surprised with some almost spring like weather. Also, I think you live in Canada so the dark is probably not a big deal to you. Lots of good indoor places to go to. Halloweentown will be over by then. I need to go back and look. I can't remember if you are sight seeing or visiting family and friends. Keep me updated on this and when it gets closer we will figure out a good spot to meet.

If you do decide to come this way for sure, I will message you my phone number so we can get together some place for coffee or a private tour of all the filming locations for Twilight. Halloweentown is a really cute kids movie. It has a cult following. Check it out this October.

Wow, I had no idea Twilight was filmed near Portland. Hmm, might be a day trip. I only vaguely remember Halloweentown.

Funny you got to observe a wedding from afar, feels like great fiction fodder!

I live about 35 miles North of Portland in Halloweentown, otherwise known as St. Helens. You may know about our town from the movie with Debbie Reynolds or perhaps Twilight. I live 2.5 blocks from the Bella Swan house.

In other news there is a big party going on at the Alano club on the hill. I think that is a good thing. They actually make quite good neighbors.

Really struggling with overeating and not tracking now. I am setting the timer again. I have had small gains the last two weeks and I really love having my clothes feel all loose and baggy.

Hmmm.. The club members all just stood and bowed their heads. I wonder if it is a church meeting or maybe a memorial service. I think there are about ten different groups that meet there for different 12 step programs.

Anyway, sorry for the distraction. If I don't get a handle on it this week, I am calling the health coach hot line and begging for assistance.

PS: IT WAS A WEDDING! So cool we got to watch them come back down the aisle.

Sorry the Nerdwax didn't stay sticky. Bummer.

Setting a timer is a great idea, Cathy.

Sorry I've been crazy busy for close to a month here! Crazy town here.

Cathy, your fire story - do you live near Portland? We might be planning a family trip to Portland soon.

Struggling a bit with the food at the moment. I really want something buttery and sweet, but then I remember how icky I felt in the hospital and how it dulls my taste buds so I don't enjoy the healthy food as much. Then, I got up and set the timer for two hours and wrote all this out in my food journal. Think I made it past this little problem.

I might consider a ten minute nap too.

Even after washing and drying my glasses, the nerdwax did not stay sticky for more than a day. I was hoping it would stay there longer.

I never heard of nerdwax, but sounds good for sweaty noses. Loved the quote.

I too like bullet lists. I have a couple sitting beside me. One of my food diary and the other of things I need to do.

Kayaked, rode in the jet boat and even drove for a bit. I was better with the speed and steering this time.

Our recycling center caught fire. It was near the river so we checked it out on the river side from the boat. No one injured. It was only the compressed plastic bottles stacked on pallets on pavement away from everything combustible. Very large dark plume of smoke seen all the way from our town to Portland according to the newscast.

I nearly bought nerdwax for my son's glasses. But one of the reviews discouraged me b/c he has ridiculously sensitive skin. I still might try it, just not in summer when he's going to be outdoors a lot. You'll have to let us know how much you like it as time goes on!

Cathy: "Ahhh....but writing and binge eating do not go together."
That's a really good point. I should consider that more. Writing more will also make me feel happier and more fulfilled as a person, so that should also cut down on the binge eating. Did I mention I picked up a writing prompts book at Target? I told someone...might have been on another thread here. At the moment I have sick-brain, can't think straight.

Chris: I read a lot of non-fiction as well. I'm equally nerdy for both, reading-wise. But writing...I struggle to stick with just the facts, so I'm not good at reporting or other non-fiction. I like to embellish a bit too much. LOL. Although I've recently become irritated with professionals who can't stick to the facts. By this, I mean people like my financial advisor, attorney, and para-pros who are treating my kid. If I send a bulleted list, with simple questions, I expect simple answers back, also in some sort of dry, facts-only fashion. Not a long drawn out paragraph with a bunch of unrelated junk thrown in. So...maybe I am better than I once was at non-fic now that I am always busy and need to push aside life's fluff in order to get to the heart of matters.

Hmm, thanks, both ladies, for making me think :)

I am really enjoying your postings! emoticon emoticon

I really don't write fiction. I am more interested in nonfiction, I guess.

Geeky stuff. And, related, is a quote I got. I bought "Nerdwax." It is sticky. It keeps my glasses up on my nose, not slipping down.

In the box was this quote:

"Removing seal (on the nerdwax applicator" may intensify your love of spreadsheets!"

Ahhh....but writing and binge eating do not go together. As long as we are geeking out on spelling, punctuation, alliteration and all the lovelies of a great story arc we are happy and not on a binge.

Health Coach: She was the one who put me on the program with the book. She helps to remind me of the steps. There is actually a chapter in the book on how to coach. She happens to be paid for coaching by my insurance and has a masters degree in social services. So she checks to make sure I am on track. She listens. She encourages. She plants a couple new ideas or tasks in my head. One was putting the peanut butter jar in another container in the fridge. I think of what my goals are every time I see it. I have not had a pnut butter binge since. This month I am to sit at the table and eat mindfully and slowly and take a moment to enjoy the food in front of me before eating it. So I have taken to doing a yoga meditation and a prayer or thankfulness before eating, but when I am at the table alone I wolf the food down because I have a bazillion things I either need to do or want to do. If I take a bite of food and answer an SP thread it slows down my eating even if it does not slow down my mind, so still working on this one. I am trying for one meal a day at the table without distractions.

That sounds fun, who is the writing contest for? (who are the entrants?) I am a subscriber to Narrative Magazine (online zine) and they run a few different contests, one is for younger writers, and I often wish I could read more of the entries than just the winners. They run fiction, super short fic (flash fic? something like that - I feel like that genre changes names a lot), poetry, um...might be forgetting something.

With writing, my fear is that I'll start writing and be completely stumped when I can't use emojis and super casual vernacular. I feel like my literary part of my brain has slowly atrophied. But maybe if I start with pen and paper like days of old (LOL), it'll reawaken the part of my brain that knows grammar, punctuation, and how to live without emojis.

I never had a problem until I started playing an online game 3.5 years ago. That pretty much ruined my ability to write cogent, grammatically correct text. And forget spelling! I was miss Spelling Bee when I was a kid, but now that the computer does it for you...I'm not as good as I once was.

So, back to the theme of this thread - I'd like to know more about what a health coach does for you.

My writing friend and I signed up to be judges for a writing contest that another friend's son put together. Will let you know how that goes. Went to the fair and GD got two first place ribbons on her water color and mixed media paintings. Not sure what is going on with the third picture. The tag was taped closed. For the last couple of years I have sworn that I would paint up a thematic series of rocks and enter it. Also, there were several paint party pics I recognized and participated in at the fair. And a blue ribbon on a beautiful but fairly simple knit blanket. I would not enter a paint party pic because the design would not be mine, but apparently it is okay Kind of like using a knitting pattern.

Wow, the letter writing one sounds like such a gift during times when you couldn't just pick up the phone b/c long distance cost a LOT, international required an appointment, and no instant communication at all. So to get a big packet like that must have felt enormously warm.

exquisite corpse sounds intriguing. I looked it up on Wiki, will need to do some more research. I called what we were doing a Round Robin because my grandmother had a Round Robin. She and eight friends decided the order of who mailed to who. She mailed it to one friend, who added her own letter, who sent it to the next friend who added another letter. When it got back to Grandma, She would pull her old letter and add a new one. It was pretty bulky. But always exciting. She would read bits and pieces to mom or dad to get them caught up on mutual friends.

Our writing round robin was similar in that we each took turns adding anything from a line, to a paragraph or a page. Most of us just added a paragraph. So you have this vision when you write your paragraph, but by the time the story gets back to you it is completely changed.

I have played this with the kids and GKs at a restaurant before waiting for dinner. It can be hilarious.

Out of curiosity, I looked up "Writing Round Robin". I am not the first to call that activity by that name.

Re: Health Coach. The doctor assigned one for me through my kaiser insurance. I love her. So incredibly helpful. We phone conference once a month.

That sounds like an amazing starter! I'd love to read the draft.

It also sounds like a lot of fun doing a round robin, but I'm not sure, is it like an Exquisite Corpse writing exercise?

I love collaborating on stories. Our group has done what I call a round robin and there was one on a Spark People team too that I participated in. So the true event that spurred my first round robin was at the county park next to the fairgrounds. I was walking Buddy when a middle aged woman came walking over the hill from the dormitory in a Santa coat. This was summer and it did not look like she was wearing anything under it. There was also a beat up old RV in the parking lot. I was on the other side of the park, so I didn't get to see if she went to the RV, but that was the catalyst to start a story. My writing group thought the whole scene was hilarious. They had so many suggestions that I encouraged them to extend my story starter and so Maggie was born. We all took turns adding paragraphs. The current Maggie does not resemble the real life person at all, but I will always thank her for lots of laughs and fun. Still wonder what the heck the Santa coat was about. In the story, I wrote that her and her husband broke into the dorm to take showers. Cliff decided to be nice and wash her clothes in the sink because he was so much faster at showering. He took them back to the RV to dry and started making lunch for her, totally clueless as to her real needs.

Wonder if I can find that original short story. If I do, I will share it. I have several drafts of the big story, but the quick write in class is what I want to share. I will find something to share. I am not a passionate writer. I started writing to help remember my parents stories. It was also something I could do when the vertigo was severe and it felt productive. I have moments of genius, but I can't pull together a story arc to save my life. Nor do I feel compelled to write. But I sure enjoy rubbing elbows with writers and NaNo and Guild and all the other fun things.

What health coach? It's been a while since I've found time to get here, so either I lost a thread of conversation, or I didn't know about a health coach experience you were having.

As far as writing, I hope to get back to it soonish. I have quit playing an online game I was spending way too much of my free time on. And now am catching up on some real life things I'd let slide.

My writing process is mostly that I fall in love with a character (one that pops into my head, or a stranger story which I'll explain in a minute). Once I fall in love, the story starts.

Now, falling in love doesn't necessarily mean the character is likable, only that something deeply appeals to me that I feel a story instantly from. I rarely know where the story will go until I begin to write.

The stranger story is just that sometimes I'll be observing a stranger somewhere in public and a story will pop into my head about that person. Total fiction, of course, b/c they're strangers. And then that person becomes the story.

I am awful at describing scenery, though. I used to get pinged on that in every workshop. People would ask me, ok, but where are they? So, my people are detailed, usually coming alive through their conversations. But my scenery is broad strokes, hints of reality. It seems like our writing would complement the other quite well, we could collaborate without stepping on each other's toes much!

What can I do for myself today?

So one of our writing ladies, told us about a book she was reading. The premise was great fun and she thought it would make a good story starter. So I have a challenge for you. Write a paragraph about the lady who checked into the hotel to discover she had to share her room with a horse.

My good friend that has been writing since we were children has the characters talk to her in her head. Then she writes like crazy. They have been pretty quiet for a long time now.

I on the other hand just start writing. I will start writing description of some element in whatever I am writing about. It might just be all the details of the floor of the motor home. Usually, if I keep that up for about five minutes then other things start coming to mind. I never could write dialog. That has been a long swampy struggle for me. At least now I am conscious of it and lack of it in my stories.

Talked to the health coach yesterday. I am doing really good with the program. Told her I am still fearful of the winter months. She said she could schedule more phone consults then. Also, she suggested I put that darn jar of peanut butter in another container, (the whole jar). I did and I refrigerated it and for the most part I am not perseverating on it and now I will have organic peanut butter to cook with when I need it. It makes the most yummy sauce for stir fry and fresh veggies. I don't need to be eating it straight out of the jar with a spoon.

True. But I was also really happy that my headspace went there. It's been a long time, I was beginning to wonder if I'd ever feel like writing again.

Glad you had some "me" time even if you didn't write. That is important.

What's funny is that I found myself with some time today and ran errands. Toward the end, I decided to treat myself to date-night food (by myself) and while I was eating, quietly and blissfully alone, it occurred to me that I felt like writing. But, sadly, I had to get home and let the sitter go. And, I had nothing to really write on or about. LOL, but it's the first time in ages, I actually felt like doing it.

LOL He definitely would have not liked Barney then. Too cool about your lyrics. You do need to squeak out some writing time again.

I've never seen an entire one, only clips. Mainly because my husband doesn't like singing and dancing. Like at all. He says he wonders why songs bother to have lyrics. LOL. I used to write lyrics! In fact, there are several songs of mine in the copyright office somewhere...a friend had a band, wrote cool music but needed help with lyrics. One of our songs even won an award in DC and was featured in an article. But...nope, he doesn't even like song lyrics. He is a drummer. He understands rhythms. Not melodies. Not dancing.

Once we were watching the Wiggles with our son, and he was aghast and said, what are they even dancing to? They're not on the beat! I said, they're dancing to the melody. He left the room, disgusted. LOL.

You know, I don't think I have ever watched a Bollywood movie. Do you recommend one?

PS: Aladdin is like Disney does Vegas. Way over the top, but fun. Glad I went.

I kind of feel that. I can get into some really big "what the heck" moods and go crazy. However, with the most recent hospital scare, I am feeling more committed. Also we are going into summer and all kinds of fun things are happening. It is easier to get back in the pool when the weather is nicer too. No the real test comes in October through February. Maybe I will have everything memorized by then and be able to breeze through. That is my hope.

With NaNoWriMo the hardest week is the third week to stay motivated writing, which is the week before I go on the cruise so that might be a test too. The cruise might be problematic, but I don't overeat in public, so maybe not.

So tonight, I wanted to go see Aladdin, but I always have to have peanut M&Ms. I finally decided I could have half the bag for a snack tonight and planned it into the schedule. Because, I am still on week one, I did good and I don't feel deprived. The other half is going in the freezer for a snack tomorrow.

Keep us posted! I know *why* I binge (did that work with the help of a few books a couple of years ago). I just don't know what to do to stop it. Other than the obvious, "don't do it." LOL

Finished reading the first part and am feeling good about starting the second part. First step is journaling, food, time location and feeling, context, comments and whether what we ate is considered a binge.

Hi All,

Did you know Kaiser has health coaches that will talk on the phone with you about every three weeks and set you up with plans to cope with and resolve binge eating? Had my first consult a few minutes ago.

My coach recommended I purchase Overcoming Binge Eating as it is well written and has activities for you. It is basically a training program to develop new habits. I will let you know if it is any good. www.amazon.com/Overcoming-Bin

Also I spotted a free book on Amazon with good reviews and it is free. So got it too.

Never Binge Again.

It is free to download Kindle onto your computer if you don't have and actual Kindle to read on.

Anyway, I am really excited about this opportunity to improve my health and hopefully it will be what I need to get through October to February.
