??? I haven't seen the movie and do not plan to. I started the thread because I was surprised to learn of the movie. And now there are two.

I've always thought politics were dirty; and now with social media, it seems we see just about every underhanded jab attempted. By both parties.

At the end of the day, we have to sift through the muck and see which proposed policies we believe are best needed for the country. What sucks is that we have to accept other things we do not like (about either party), if we plan to exercise our right to vote.

This is a review the nephew of a conservative friend wrote in his blog

"...An Obvious Narrative, with Interesting History, and Large Gaps in Logic
By Chris D on Sun, Aug 26, 2012 8:01 PM EDT RATING:
star33......Email

Print......I'm being fair when I say this is not a bad movie. It's
also not a particularly good one.

All documentaries tend to expose a fatal flaw of society: that all of
us, for whatever reason, tend to think that movies are real. Of
course, being a documentary does not necessarily make the content
factual. This is still a movie. It has a story arc, and a narrative,
and ultimately, an agenda.

Dinesh D'Souza falls into a trap that has ensnared many people before
him - the belief that having a PHD automatically validates all of your
opinions. It doesn't. However, it does not stop him from providing a
somewhat interesting history of the life of Barack Obama, even if the
final result of his argument feels like a distant stretch.

Like many documentaries, there is a lot of ground to cover. So he
begins by giving a quick, (and very flattering) autobiography,
asserting that of similar background as an immigrant to the United
States, he has unique insight into Obama's viewpoints. He then follows
that up by throwing a barrage of sinister "facts" about Obama's
Presidential decisions upon taking office. While it looks like these
are all things we are going to address in the film, they're not.
They're actually just intended to overwhelm you and make you believe
that Obama has an ominous hidden agenda. What it makes us immediately
and painfully aware of is that this is a film with a message.

Why did I put facts in quotes? Well, some of them are not entirely
accurate. Example: One of the things claimed is that the first thing
President Obama did in office was to send a bust of Winston Churchill
back to England (presumably because of a hatred of Churchill's
colonial expansionist policy). While it is technically true that the
bust was sent back, it wasn't explicitly an executive action. The bust
itself had been LOANED to President George W. Bush just after 9/11,
and the loan term expired in 2009. It is customary for new
presidential regimes to send things back that were loaned to previous
ones. The UK did offer to extend the loan, and The White House
declined. So then it's true, right? He must hate Churchill...

Not so fast.

If that's true, then why didn't he have the 2nd bust of Churchill,
which exists in the Presidential residence (that would be where he
lives!) removed? (That one was gifted to the White House during the
Nixon era.) Because he doesn't hate Churchill. But the loan contract
to George W. Bush and two statues do not fit the narrative. This is
the point I'm making. The facts are chosen to support a story arc.
Don't forget that as you watch.

From there, we launch into what is the most interesting part of the
movie, a fairly comprehensive, public-record deep biography of Barack
Obama. Much of this part of the film doesn't feel biased, but D'Souza
manages to drop in jabs here and there, often using carefully selected
excerpts from Barack Obama's own books, attempting desperately to
prove Obama's desire to destroy America.

In the next part of the film, D'Souza himself travels to Kenya and
interviews people who intimately knew Barack Obama Sr. Obama Sr. was a
violent drunk with strong anti-colonialist views, mostly because he
grew up in a broken, British-controlled Kenya. This is focused on
establishing that though Obama Jr. had little contact with his father,
he still fought to understand him, and Obama Sr.'s image was central
to Obama Jr.'s life.

During this act, we begin to shift gears from fact to opinion. While
using excerpts from Dreams From My Father over shots depicting (a
young actor portraying) Barack mourning the death of his father, it
becomes clear that D'Souza is confusing the 51-year-old Barack Obama
with an angry 17-25-year-old Barack Obama who is still searching for
an identity. These two Obamas are not equal, and the notion that they
are is ridiculous.

There is somewhat of a climax after he interviews Barack's half
brother, (A man who I think it is important to note has met Barack
only one time when Barack was 11 or so), and suggests that because
Barack hasn't shared his money with a complete stranger on the other
side of the world, that he is a hypocrite. (His half-brother seems to
disagree with D'Souza as well, saying, "He doesn't owe me anything.")

After interviewing a few more radical people in Kenya who were close
cohorts of Barack Obama Sr., all of which assert their (and his)
strong anti-colonial beliefs, ("The colonialists exploit the poor.
They take all of our resources and sell it back to us at a very high
price."), it's as if the director looked at his watch and suddenly
realized there wasn't much time left, because at this point, D'Souza
makes the biggest leap in logic in the entire film - to simply
attribute every belief of Barack Obama Sr. to Barack Obama Jr.

And all of that is done without sufficient cause, and the very idea
itself is insulting, reducing Barack Jr. to a lifeless robot,
incapable of forming opinions for himself.

From this point forward, the movie becomes almost entirely conjecture.
They repeat the same "sinister facts" from the beginning of the movie,
without going into depth, of course, and they make hasty assertions
about what might become of the world under a second Obama term. It
really seems like they ran out of time, since the end is sort of
ambiguous. He leaves it to you, dear voter. How will you vote? For or
against the propaganda?

Cinematically, this is an okay film. Much of it was shot with Canon
5Ds, (which is at times, impressive), and this is most noticeable in
shaky-cam transition scenes where it gets a bit Blair Witch-y.
Thankfully, those scenes don't last long enough to make you sick.
There are some decent animated scenes, and the music was used to good
effect.

In terms of the story they've put together, factual or not, it was a
watchable film, despite it coming from a man who believes the Earth is
6,000 years old, who also believes that the Holocaust was ordained by
God because it led to the strengthening of Israel, and who also dated
Laura Ingraham. So, you know, take it with a grain of salt. It's a
Hollywood film masquerading as educational fare. It will have no more
net effect than further dividing an already divided nation. Enjoy.."

Romney Campaign: We Will Not 'Be Dictated By Fact-Checkers'

TAMPA, Fla. -- The Romney campaign said on Tuesday that its ads attacking President Obama's waiver policy on welfare have been its most effective to date. And while the spots have been roundly criticized as lacking any factual basis, the campaign said it didn't really care.

"We're not going to let our campaign be dictated by fact-checkers," Romney pollster Neil Newhouse said at a panel organized by ABC News.

This is a different standard than the one Romney himself has held up for the election-season ad wars. Reacting to attacks by a pro-Obama super PAC, Romney recently told a radio station that "in the past, when people pointed out that something was inaccurate, why, campaigns pulled the ad."

The presumptive nominee's top communications hand, Eric Ferhnstrom, was quick to make the case that the two instances were not comparable.

"This is a good discussion to have," he said. "We are not accusing the president of being a felon, we are not accusing him of killing somebody."

The latter was in referrence to the Priorities USA Action ad that tied the closure of a steel mill by Bain Capital to a woman's death several years later (without her husband's insurance coverage, she couldn't pay for care).

"Clearly they are giving states the option to change the welfare-to-work requirement," Ferhnstrom said in reference to the basis for the anti-Obama ad. "We heard from those [Republican] governors [who requested waivers], they said, 'No we don't want to change the work requirement in our states.'"

Hah! Nicholson was great in that movie...

The sentiment is so true, Penny and Val. Truth and facts would not get the masses stirred up. And having the base stirred up is that important to them this close to the the election that they have come out with not one man's fantasy but another as well. How many more will they roll out before the election?

How many more right wing conspiracy theories do you think they will come up with to get their base out and in the voting booth?

How about a civil war if Obama is re-elected? Seriously...Judge Tom Head of Texas said this on live television:

“He [Obama] is going to try to hand over the sovereignty of the United States to the U.N.,” Mr. Head said on Fox 34 last week. “O.K., what’s going to happen when that happens? I’m thinking worst-case scenario: civil unrest, civil disobedience, civil war, maybe. And we’re not talking just a few riots here and demonstrations. We’re talking Lexington, Concord, take up arms and get rid of the guy.”

Wow...

Unbalanced and Overwrought.

"FACT CHECK: Anti-Obama film muddy on facts"

By BETH FOUHY | Associated Press

"The assertion that Obama's presidency is an expression of his father's political beliefs, which D'Souza first made in 2010 in his book "The Roots of Obama's Rage," is almost entirely subjective and a logical stretch at best.

It's true that Obama's father lived most of his life in Kenya, an African nation once colonized by the British, and that Obama's reverence for his absent father frames his best-selling memoir. D'Souza even sees clues in the book's title: "Notice it says 'Dreams From My Father,' not 'of' my father," D'Souza says.

But it's difficult to see how Obama's political leanings could have been so directly shaped by his father, as D'Souza claims. The elder Obama left his wife and young son, the future president, when Obama was 2 and visited his son only once, when Obama was 10. But D'Souza frames that loss as an event that reinforced rather than weakened the president's ties to his father, who died in a car crash when Obama was in college."

The author of the article goes through the laundry list of assumptions, not based in fact, that
conservative scholar, Dinesh D'Souza used to write and narrate the movie. Ah, the truth it's such bother isn't it?

In the spirit of which this thread originated I'd like to pose this question.

Will the release of the book titled "The New New Deal" by Michael Grumwald in which named sources reveal that meetings were held to discuss the "stonewalling" of the Obama agenda. In another words, do everything within their power to block any legislation that Obama supported regardless of whether the original bill was authored by Republicans or initially introduced into the political conversation by Republicans/Conservatives.

At this point there will only be reviews and quotes from the book that will be released on August 14. I've preordered mine on my Kindle.

If the book is as hyped it will prove that Democrats haven't been paranoid about the Republican's plans.

Thew shoe missile was an insult of great magnitude.....not really hatred so much as a TOTAL LACK OF RESPECT.

Am excerpt from the BBC NEWS report when the incident occurred.......(read the whole article for more insight it even has some references to George, Sr. and insults to him after Kuwait):

"Around the Arab world, if you want to escalate a situation, by saying for example "I'm going to thump you", add the words "with a shoe" and you're adding serious insult to the threat of possible injury.

It's that cultural significance that added real sting to the assault by an Iraqi journalist against US President George W Bush at a Baghdad news conference on 15 December.

In Arab culture it's considered rude even to display the sole of one's shoe to a fellow human being.

Certainly, crossing one's legs ankle-on-knee style should never be done in a public place for fear of offending the person next to you.

The sensitivity is related to the fact shoes are considered ritually unclean in the Muslim faith.

In addition to ritual ablutions before prayer, Muslims must take off their shoes to pray, and wearing shoes inside a mosque is forbidden.

Shoes should either be left at the door of the mosque, or carried (preferably in the left hand with the soles pressed together).

But beyond the Islamic significance, the dirty and degrading implication of the sole of a shoe crosses all religious boundaries in the Middle East

There has been plenty of droll reaction in the wake of Sunday's shoe attack to experts who have informed the public that "throwing a shoe at someone's face is considered an insult in Islam". "

I think GWB might have been POTUS most disliked by foreign nations, including our allies. I was a" border rider" at the time, now live elsewhere, and the Canadians north of the border (then 8 miles away) for the first time in my living memory become unfriendly and unwelcoming while he was in office. Tht's no longer the case.

Yes, true, we'll disagree. GW was made fodder and received hatred. Remember when the guy threw a shoe at him in another country? Other than bullets, I don't recall any other POTUS receiving such physical threats as he did.

Nixon received a share of hatred too.

"
yeh, funny how GWB isn't coming to the convention..or campaigning for the GOP candidate..

Being that GW lives in Dallas, I see him on the news with some frequency. Every single time anyone asks him to comment on O or anything in politics, he politely declines and reminds them that he has left office. He just will not comment on anyone else. He says something to the effect of "I know how hard the job is, they have my support." I don't believe we'll see him involved in politics in any way any time soon.

Ally...I did not like GW. I thought he was a colossal fool. I had stronger feelings about Cheney as Bush's puppet master, though I did see signs of the puppet trying to break free toward the end of his last term (not pardoning Libby, as Cheney wanted him to do for absolution, is just one example.)

However, I stand by my comment: There IS more hatred for Obama than any sitting president in my lifetime. Facts back that up. Val is correct. The last time we saw that kind of vitriol was when Clinton was in the White House. It's what turned me away from the Republican Party, though I never voted straight party-line as a rule...and to be honest, it took Bush's treatment of McCain during the primaries in 2000 to really make a final break.

Penny...you hit the nail on the head. Bush was a joke, but comparing the hatred of Bush to Obama is disingenuous.

I think you'll argue otherwise Ally but, GWB probably had more jokes told about him than outright hatred. He was fodder for so much humor. President Obama...not so much. In fact, when he was elected comedians complained because he was harder to skewer.

Val's right they hated Clinton, too and even though they couldn't destroy him, they tried. I don't think anyone was out to destroy Bush. Funny how his own party keeps their distance, though.

Christine,

This single-minded pursuit to destroy a sitting President personally and/or politicallly started with Bill Clinton. Over the years they've fine-tuned their methods.

After Watergate it took years for Republican's to regain respect in the public's eye.

The public had blinders on concerning Ronald Reagan during and after his presidency. Relying on peoples "morals"(eyes rolling) to guide their votes in an attempt to destroy the progress the country made in constitutionally guaranteeing the rights of "all" American's.

The election of the first black President(sorry bi-racial) brought out the long dormant and deeply held bigotry of many American's while disguising it in displeasure with Obama's so-called "socialist" agenda. Even though a vote against Obama is a vote against their own best interest.

Conservatives are going to find that yes, the pendulum swings both ways. Not only in power but in the kind of attacks they have so carefully crafted.

How many ways are there to say it "You reap what you sow," "What comes around goes around," "Karma's a b!tch!"

There is more hatred for Obama than any sitting president in my lifetime. It does not surprise me that another right wing nut job has come out of the woodwork with his version of the "truth" based on nonsense and lies.

I have read Dreams of My Father and found nothing in it to lead me to believe that Obama is anything other that who he has proved to be. A man with integrity and a sincere love for his wife, children and country. I have a hard time wrapping my brain around the kind of crazy rantings from the right and their mouthpiece...Fox and Limbaugh. This movie is just another in a long line of rubbish being sold to the gullible.

I agree Shirley; it's not all, but happens on both sides of the coin. One group doesn't have the exclusive grip on evil. Our founding fathers were about the pursuit of opportunity for all; too many politicians today are about the pursuit of opportunity for self.

Years ago in a class I took, the instructor showed a graphic of the death of a nation. I have searched unsuccessfully to find a copy several times. A very interesting observation.

There is nothing that causes more trouble than religion and politics. Not speaking of everyone in politics or the church.Everyone knows I love church but not ones with fanatics in charge and some Reps and some Dems are the same.Their politics is their religion. If the founding fathers of our nation could come back they wouldn't even recognize the politics now.Everything has changed so much and if the church did the job the early one did.Their would be no hungry and homeless people. So sad! emoticon

It did not take long to figure out the slant behind this movie and if you read more on the author (whose work the movie is based on), Dinesh D'Souza, you will find more of his fantastical opinions of Barack Obama's life story and the meaning behind the President's words. He has created (note - "created") a whole "Manchurian Candidate" scenario in his head, which he is selling. That a retired, wealthy film producer with a right wing agenda decided to bring D'Souza's rantings to a wider audience, is not surprising. It's also not surprising that uniformed people will believe such propaganda. Fiction passed off as fact....no journalism at all.

What does surprise me is the relentless aggression and destructive agenda of the right. They aren't worried about the collective us and the future of our country. They are worried about losing....again.

Has anyone here on Soap read O's books?
-----------
I've listened to the audio books of both - read by Barack Obama.

He writes prose like he writes speeches - it's really best read aloud.

I agree that for many people, their minds are already made up as to who they 'like' for POTUS; but I'm not convinced all people actually get off their duff and vote. Some just like to complain.

There is a sector of voters that are undecided and I wonder if the movie will have an impact on them? For some, all someone with a platform (i.e. news, celebrity, blogger, Facebook post, etc.) has to do is 'say' something and it becomes 'fact' as it is passed along. Social media has really facilitated that kind of idiotic news spread.

I can't recall that anyone has ever made a movie about a sitting president with the purpose of 'exposing' hidden secrets. …? I know today it's not uncommon with all of the left/right commentators and bloggers - or anyone with a social media account to espouse their beliefs, but a movie is a fairly large investment of time and money.

I wonder if their goal is to "expose" secrets ... or to just make money? If it was just about exposing bad stuff and to wake up America, wouldn't it have been more effective to just post online to reach more people faster and at no cost?

Shirley, I agree … that's our only true hope.

Much of Hollywood and the music industry package 'agenda' in entertainment.

I had not heard of this book and only heard the radio ad while driving yesterday. One part I find odd from the trailer is "America to be downsized" … if anything O is about supersizing government.

Has anyone here on Soap read O's books?

Myrea, thanks for the in depth info on the producers of this movie. Rather than a journalistic account of the life of Sr and Jr it appears to be an "agenda" motivated commercial edited to appear as a piece with objectivity and integrity.

I have to say that the FOX interview wasn't what I'd expected. Although they didn't delve deeply into the background of the makers which color the information provided in the film, they would typically jump on the band wagon but appeared to not want to encourage or further publicize this film.

Unfortunately most viewers aren't interested in the minutae.

SO, a wealthy producer of popular movies creates a slick anti-Obama campaign film based on the rantings of an India born, Evangelical with an ax to grind.............

Brief Gerald Molen Bio:

"Gerald Robert Molen (born January 6, 1935) is an American film producer. He has worked closely with Steven Spielberg, having produced five of his films, and won an Academy Award for co-producing Schindler's List. Gerald "Jerry" Molen is now semi-retired and spends his time alternating between Montana and Las Vegas, Nevada.[1]

Molen was born in Great Falls, Montana, the son of Edith Lorraine (née Meyer) and Gerald Richard Molen.[2] He grew up in North Hollywood, California, after moving from Montana, with a number of younger brothers and sisters. His mother ran a diner, "The Blue Onion", which was located across from one of the major studios. Molen got his start in the movie business by changing tires on studio trucks.Molen has appeared in cameos in several of the films he produced, including Rain Man, Days of Thunder, and Jurassic Park. The name 'Molen' can be seen painted on the front of a large black cauldron in the movie Hook as the camera pans across the pirate docks in Neverland.

Molen is an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.[3]

Molen has reportedly claimed that he was banned from speaking to high school students in Montana because he is a "right wing conservative."[4] "

For more info see this..........

"At a jam-packed Glacier Country Pachyderm Club meeting, Oscar-winning Hollywood film producer Gerald “Jerry” Molen delivered a doomsday vision of the United States’ future if President Barack Obama is reelected, with references to socialism and the “end of America.”

Molen spoke to a roomful of Republicans – including a number of Flathead legislators and candidates – at Kalispell’s Red Lion Hotel on June 29, advising the crowd to coalesce around Mitt Romney because staying home on election day or voting for a third party would constitute “a vote for Obama.”

AND,

A little bit about Dinesh D'Souza author of "The Roots of Obama’s Rage"............

"D'Souza challenges beliefs and projects such as affirmative action and social welfare. In the book Illiberal Education, D'Souza argued that intolerance of conservative views is common at many universities.

He has attributed many modern social problems to what he calls the "cultural left". In his recent book The Enemy at Home: The Cultural Left and Its Responsibility for 9/11, he wrote that:

The cultural left in this country is responsible for causing 9/11 ... the cultural left and its allies in Congress, the media, Hollywood, the non-profit sector and the universities are the primary cause of the volcano of anger toward America that is erupting from the Islamic world.[24]"

See, I don't get this "the first four years were just a smoke screen for Obama's REAL agenda in his second term" paranoia.

If Obama were such a radical, we would have experienced all that from day 1.

We actually KNOW what we're going to get if Obama is re-elected - more of what we've seen from Washington since 2009.

Obama is not suddenly going to turn into the Anti-Christ in 2013. He will be the same President he has always been. If you disagree with what he has done, or tried to do, vote for Romney, but leave off the doomsday projections for Roland Emmerich and his special effects team.

Watched the trailer and the interview and they guy never really got to the point of why he thinks Obama is bad for the nation, just that he dislikes Obama. The fact remains that Obama cannot unilaterally make decisions and institute policies that will destroy the United States.

What I see of the last 4 yrs is Obama repairing damage caused by previous administration's decisions.

Will it effect the election? No more than any other ad by Romney or shadow groups. Those that support him now will vote for him those that don't or never have won't. I believe decisions have been made.

I heard a radio ad for this movie today; have you heard about it?

Do you think it will have any impact in the election?
