Yesterday my DH brought out a video he made of our cruise in Aug. 2010. OMG, seeing myself 51 pounds higher was a RUDE awaking! I've been struggling with 5#. Do you know the saying it only takes 1 thought to change your world? Seeing myself, 2 years before Spark People & in a video, (not a photo I could choose different angles or delete) helped me REFOCUS on my goals. I have been reading them almost daily, but NOW, I am REALLY visualizing my true desires. I did not even recognize myself, THANKS to Spark People. My prayers were answered, I am grateful & ready to walk Lucy today before house cleaning & a fun artsy event for children. My words cannot say how this video impacted me! My entire world has changed to the best I can be! THANK YOU! emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

I don't look in the mirror, have short hair that is a basic style with no mirror, and if I wear makeup I use a little compact mirror to only see where I need to see. Believe me, I KNOW what is in the mirror, don't need to keep seeing it to remind myself. emoticon

I avoid the mirror these days.. unless it's to put make up on.. and or glance at myself. It's the jowl line and the saggy double chin I hate. My husband told me that everything is shrinking, even my arms [bat wings] ..I take his word for it.. and the fact that my clothing is fitting loser. My face is aging though because I'm aging and where the fat use to make me look younger because my skin was tight [no wrinkles], losing the weight is making me age faster, it kind of depresses me to see the skin saggy and loose and making me look older.. I guess I'm kind of avoiding the mirror right now [though I can't avoid my hands] truth be told, I've become one of those women I always hated who are vain about their looks. I tell myself to get over it, it's not like I'm getting any younger and yet, I've always said I would age with grace; yea, it's not happening. When I look in the mirror, I see a saggy chin, frown lines, have a jowl, and need a good dye job.. those roots and shaggy mess called my hair, is nothing I wish to expose out in public..let's not even address the rest of my body, like my thighs & stomach, lets not even go there. emoticon
Hey, Beth, I think I might have a hidden issue, what say YOU? emoticon

My eye's use to be my best feature but now the upper lids sag, see, I started to say a positive but it JUST doesn't work for me. emoticon

I think God has been dealing with me in this area of the mirror because for two or three day's I've been thinking I need to look in one and ACCEPT who and what I've become. emoticon

I see a warrior and battle scars now, instead of ugly fat and loose skin.
I see my eyes and love them.
I adore the outer curve of my shoulders and upper arms.
I has taken me years and years of therapy and self talk to see this.

When i look in the mirror, sometimes, i see a girl that fights her own desires. She tells herself she doesn't deserve anything good. She tells herself she can't do it, she won't do it. Other times, she looks in that mirror and sees that she deserves everything she wants. She tells herself she can and will get everything she deserves. She tells herself that she is beautiful just the way she is but she can do better.

I see a woman who has so much more potential in her- if only she can have the willpower to do it. A woman who wants to live life and grow strong, healthy and live more naturally as the Goddess intended. A woman who is fortunate enough to love and be loved by my spouse through both thick and thin.

Just trying to make it day by day...

I see a strong woman who has accomplished a lot since joining spark in 2008. I have gone from 350 lbs to 172 lbs and am enjoying all of the benefits of a healthy body. Beauty is only skin deep and what matters is how we treat others.

I feel positive. And that's big. For most of my life, beginning when I was a little girl, I've let others' opinions of me shape my opinions of myself. I am fitter and stronger now than I've ever been, but the issues that were issues then are still issues now. My positive reflection is not because I've lost weight or gotten all buff, but because I'm learning to love me for who I am, and to see the positive aspects of my beauty and my body. And I've learned a lot of that here.

I see a well worn older woman who cared less about outer beauty and continues to work on inner beauty. I see that in the women I meet who look like me on the outside but shine from the inside! There are hundreds/thousands of them here!! emoticon emoticon

My first born daughter was very physically beautiful- so un-like me! But I warned her outer beauty would fade. She passed away at 28 while still beautiful, but I often wondered how she'd take aging. I miss her every day.

I really think what is meant in scripture by the fact that we are made in the image of God is that we have latent in all of us the virtues that stem from the Almighty. But that being said I think we are made as we are and should do the best with what we are given. There is such incredible beauty in this world, just look at the entrants to the Miss Universe contest. Are any of them more beautiful than the other? I think not! So work on being as healthy as we can be and let the our inner (virtue) beauty shine through. I was always amazed as a child how I would meet a person and think they were not good looking but as I got to know them I would be amazed in how they gained beauty every day. After that happened a number of times I realized that inner beauty was shining through these people and that was what stayed with me.

"The world is one country and mankind its citizens" one of the many truths spoken by Baha'u'llah and "Love is the light that guideth in darkness, the living link that uniteth God with man, that assureth the progress of every illumined soul."

When you look in the mirror what do you see?

Whatís typically the first thought that comes to mind when you glance at your reflection? Would you say itís a positive thought, a neutral response, or maybe a little negative grumble?

As you glance at your face, do you notice your greatest features Ė your bright eyes, your friendly smile, your healthy soft hair? Or, do you immediately notice what you think are your flaws? Be honestÖ

Last week I came across a promotional video by Dove which is titled, Real Beauty Sketches. My friend, Sandy posted the video on her Facebook page and the caption caught my attention. As I watched the video, my heart started to ache and an unsettled feeling came over me. Iíd love for you to take a minute and watch it too. I think youíll be surprised and might even feel your heart tug a little.

Pretty powerful, huh?

These are beautiful women and yet they have painted a self portrait in their minds that distorts the way they literally see themselves.

A self-portrait that appears flawed.

A self-portrait that seems harsh.

A self-portrait that ďneeds improvingĒ.

Can you relate to these women in the video? How would you describe yourself to a sketch artist or anyone else, for that matter? Would your words be positive, kind, and uplifting?

So letís be gut-honestÖ

Itís difficult, right? Because the world is constantly in our faces Ė flaunting airbrushed cover girls, gorgeous blockbuster celebrities, and perfect-body magazine models. And, itís everywhere we look.

We can so easily get caught up in the comparison trap and before we know it, not-so-nice thoughts are filling our minds Ė just like harsh brush strokes Ė painting a distorted portrait of how we see ourselves. Iíve fallen into this trap so many times. Gosh, if I had a dime for every time I thought or said something negative about my physical features, Iíd be a millionaire.

What about you? What does the portrait youíre painting of yourself look like today?

Those negative thoughts we sometimes believe about ourselves canít hold up to what God declares is true about us.

You see, scripture says that you are created in the very likeness and image of God (Genesis 1:27). Did you know you are Godís masterpiece? His greatest work of beautiful art? His crowning achievement? (Ephesians 2:10)

Even if you sometimes look in the mirror and invisibly stamp ďimperfectĒ on your forehead Ė just like I do Ė God looks at you every single moment and says, Precious child, you are so incredibly beautiful.

So who will we listen to Ė the world or God? What will we choose to believe? As the world shows off a distorted dichotomy, God whispers the absolute truth in our hearts. Itís amazing how easily we can believe Godís truth for someone else but when it comes to us, we have a tendency to waiver, to question, to hesitate.

Do you see yourself as a beautiful woman created in Godís image? Oh, I pray that you do. Friend, donít settle for less-than when God has created you for so much more. He is enthralled by your beauty (Psalm 45:11) and you take His breath away ever time He glances at you.

You are loved

You are valuable

You are beautiful

Now itís your turn:

Todayís Question: What would you consider as your greatest feature? How can you begin changing your perspective and start believing what God says about you is true?
