The Neurosurgeon I had is Dr Yanni who is the head of Neurosurgery at UCIMC. He is amazing and stellar. He has had several EDS patients so he was very familiar with how my body worked or doesn't work. My back was from having EDS and being asked to do things I should never have been asked to do.

You have to remember in Rehab that it's very similar to taking Martial Arts. You asked for it and are paying them to do it to you. lol Rehab is not something one wants but if you can get it do! It is well worth it in the end. You will be so much better faster than if you don't get it. I've noticed that those who get Rehab always do better.

How many levels do you need fused? Dr Yanni also asked me to loose weight. It is for a scientific reason. The closer to the Over weight as opposed to the Obese range of BMI the less possibility you will get a major infection. Dr Yanni asked for 170 but was willing to take me at 184 because of the issues I was having were major enough and I had lost from 225. He was amazed and so happy with me.

Dr Yanni has created arthroscopy surgery for working in the front (anterior) portion of the spine. Also he has created several tools that are being used nation wide now as well as several specific surgeries for the thoracic area as well. He's also has a really good bed side manner to boot. lol

Well I'll talk with you later.

Patty

Hi Patty, Such Wonderful News that your surgery and rehab went well. . .I'm so happy the worse of it is over and that your DH & DD are there to help you every step of the way. I do have some questions as I've been told basically my back is a "mess". I need a spinal fusion with pins & rods but right not I'm too overweight so the Neurosurgeon told me and not a good candidate to even have this surgery plus I'm far from young, actually in my senior years.. My bil had a similar back surgery that I will eventually need. His surgery also went well but he hated the rehab he was in for 2 weeks but he's doing really well now a couple of months later. He had a really excellent Neurosurgeon and was told by Hospital staff he's by far the best back surgeon in Orange County, CA. So, I think I'd go to him even though he's at least an hours drive from my house.

Take really good care Patty and thanks for checking in with us. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Well I'm still here and around. I survived the two 8+ hour surgeries. I've had some ups and some downs. I've been in the hospital, out of the hospital for 24 hours then right back in the hospital with worse, horrible symptoms. Then finally into the ARU (Advanced Rehab Unit) with 3 hours a day of therapy both OT and PT. That was for 2 weeks and I so needed it! I feel much stronger and more qualified to go home.

I've been home for two days and am holding my own. My DH and DD are both working very hard to keep me supplied with water and food. lol Slowly but surely I'm doing more walking and standing. I have a Home Health Nurse and a Home Health PT right now. When I can drive I'll get back to my regular PT and get into trouble. lol

I just wanted to update you all. I'll be uploading pictures on my page tomorrow. Just a warning some of them are a bit icky. The X-rays though are great and a sight to behold!

Patty emoticon
