Wow. I never knew it was such an interesting veggie. lol Can one do just Rutabaga mashed alone? I noticed that everyone seems to mash it with potatoes or some other veg. Just curious.

My daughter is using spinach right now to dye some cloth. I'm really getting a craving for spinach. lol

Rutabaga is different from a white turnip.
I love rutabagas mashed with white potatoes with butter, a little milk and a pinch of nutmeg. It takes longer for the rutabaga to cook than a potato. About 1/3 rutabagas and 2/3 potatoes.

Turnips taste pretty much like whatever they're cooked with except my mother swears the rutabega is delicious. I boil them for her, sometimes cubed in small pieces and added to greens, other times mashed with potatoes. I do the same with parsnips and carrots to change the flavor of mashed potatoes so gravy, butter, sour cream, and cheese are less attractive. Well, maybe not butter-call me Paula Deen on that.

OK, so this is what I gather. Treat it like a turnip or potato. It sounds like soup is a good one. I love soup and we need another one for the week for us to have. So, Rutabaga, Carrots, Cabbage, Onions, Swiss Chard, and anything else I have in the fridge. Saute and make into soup. Has anyone microwaved it? After poking it full of holes of course. I usually do that to butternut squash before I try to peel or cut it. It makes it much easier. I also do that with Acorn Squash. It kinda precooks it. Not all the way just so the peel is easier to cut.

What does the Rutabaga taste like? I figure something like a turnip. Is it stronger or milder? Does it go in salads?

Thank you all for your suggestions. I might be brave tomorrow and cook with it or eat it in a salad. It depends on the weather. lol

It is hard to peel. Here is a good tip. Boil it in water for about 4 to 5 minutes. The skin will be easier to peel off. Let it cool down before you try to peel it. I cook them in just a small amount of water and eat them as a veggie as I would eat carrots. I usually add a little butter to it when it is cooking.

Delicious raw. Peel, cut up and eat like carrot sticks. You can make them into oven fries, you can batter and fry them, you can use them in souffle, even as filler in pumkin products. You can basically use them in any recipe normally made with turnip or potato. They are excellent used with potato, and/or carrot.

Peel it, cube it and boil it with some carrots that you peel and cube. After 20-25 min. drain and mash. This is a staple for every big dinner I make. Can't live without it. Hint : goes well with a little turkey gravy over it.

Peel it, cube it, toss it in olive oil & a little salt & pepper, & roast it like you do other root vegetables.

When I was a kid, we used to have it boiled & you can mash it and add butter, salt & pepper. I actually liked it raw.

Google recipes for rutabaga or turnips.

When I was stationed in Germany my landlady made them into stew regularly. Cook them just like potatoes I think. They aren't my favorite but they are interesting. Enjoy!!

I have two from the garden that a fellow gardener gave me. I have no idea how to cook it or what to expect from it! I want to try it.

Any ideas?
