Becky - As long as you are adding them to your fitness tracker, that is where the fitness minutes are counted, so it sounds like you are doing it correctly.

I want to do my fifth cardio day on Saturday instead of Friday, meaning the two "rest" days would not be consecutive. It's fine, right?

I'm on week one, day five of the one month challenge and I have done the video each day and added it to my fitness tracker. However, I just noticed this morning that there is a checkbox on the weight loss tracker page for the videos too and I haven't been marking them. Will this effect my progress in the challenge or will I still get credit for it?

Some people say that it will burn fat stores, but overall, the number of calories your burn during a workout (regardless of where they come from) is much more important. Plus, fat burns in the carbohydrate flame. This means that exercising without eating (such as after "fasting" during sleep - 8+ hours) your body does not burn fat efficiently, or sometimes at all. We actually have an article that offers some tips and examples of what to eat before you workout: www.sparkpeople.com/resource/
nutrition
_articles.asp?id=1074
that I think you will find helpful.

I like to exercise in the morning and i read some different articles that have conflicting ideas.... one says you should exercise before you eat your first meal of the day. and by doing this it will burn more fat. Then I read an article that said it does burn more fat but only in your muscles and that type of fat loss wouldn't effect actual weight loss. I have been taught to eat a light snack 30 mins to and hour before working out. what would you recommend?

AJERRELD - You'll receive one email each week with links to the workouts for this challenge. You can also find them anytime by going to our Team page and looking for the box called Challenge Details. Click on the link to view the details for your current week, including the videos (which are repeated each week for the whole Bootcamp).

Ruth - Day 1 is only a cardio video, days 2-7 are strength training videos. So if you are referring to day 1, no, there is not a strength training video for that day.

Thank you Coach Denise for the wonderful response & resources you added. It can be somewhat confusing at times w/ the "new" developments and findings that seem to come out each year. You confirmed much of what I was taught, which helps me! :)

I have found SP articles to be very informative and well written. It is important to know & trust the source of the info we run across.

Hang in there, Overactiveelbow, and keep asking questions! That's the only way any of us ever learn! Good luck on your journey to becoming healthier! :)

You need to do both cardio and strength training to have a balanced program that will help you lose fat and retain/gain muscle, so I don't see how doing strength training in combination with cardio would be an issue. Perhaps the article was looking at just weight? I don't know - without seeing the article that you are referring to, I don't know what the article meant by that. However, if you just do cardio, sure, you will lose weight, but without incorporating strength training, up to 30% of the weight you lose can be muscle loss. You don't want to do that because muscle mass provides a lot of benefits, which include stability and bone density, along with many other things. Doing 2-3 days of strength training for each muscle group per week is a good way to go for that because it should allow you 1-2 days of rest before working that muscle group again. If you notice, with the bootcamp style challenges that we have, we work a particular muscle group one day, another group the next, then another on the following day and start over again. This is allowing your muscles to rest up, which is needed for them to repair. When you strength train, you actually make small tears in your muscles, which helps improve your strength, but this also needs time for recovery and repair.

Really, it is best to do a combination of both cardio and strength training for overall health and weight loss. They will both help you with those goals, so I don't see what wrong combination the article may be talking about unless it is focusing only on weight - then maybe they were pushing more cardio, but like I said, if you only do cardio, you have a greater chance of losing muscle mass, which will not help you at all (other than possibly seeing the number on the scale be different), but by not doing it, you are causing more issues and less likely to lose inches. If it were up to me, I would much prefer to lose inches than pounds. Two people that weigh 150 can have completely different body compositions and look completely different. The person with more muscle mass will be thinner and healthier than the person that weighs the same, but has less muscle mass and will likely be bigger than the other person. Muscle weighs the same as fat (pound for pound), but muscle is more compact than fat, so 1 pound of muscle will take up less space than 1 pound of fat.

I don't know if that helps you or makes it more confusing, but here are some resources that I think you will find helpful:

Hey there Overactiveelbow,
Don't want you to think no one else is reading your post. I figured Coach Denise probably has more knowledge to comment than I do. :) I'm also interested in what article and mag. you read it in. I know what I learned when I was trained to work at Curves and the only thing they specified in doing strength training is that if your heart rate gets more into your anaerobic instead of aerobic rate, you will not be losing the calories as much from fat as if you just stay within your aerobic range. I haven't heard anything about working in any specific combination of strength & cardio order, so that would be interesting to know about. Appreciate your question! ~ Tobi

As I remember the article, it indicated that
if your strength training exercise
was done in the wrong combination with
your cardio exercise
you would not see the weight loss
that you would normally expect to see.

If this is so, what should I be doing or not, to maximize my gain in health and loss in weight!
Thank you for listening once again.

In an article I read recently, it talked about cardio exercise and strength training exercise being counter productive to weight loss. I didn't think too much about it at the time. Now that those bits of information have been bouncing around in my head for a few days I have decided to hunt for some clarification. --I spent a while today just trying to figure out where to go to ask the question. And, finally remembered to check this team for a location.

Now, how long between my cardio session(s) and my strength training session(s).. What constitutes a workout session? Some days my cardio is a 2mile dvd in home walk. Followed or preceded by 1 or 2 SP strength training videos, and or some single strength training items with the little demo videos.

Sorry if my questions are inane. I am a newbie to deliberate exercise for the exercise, rather than the exercise being the result of whatever else needs to be done in my world.

Now I just have to remember to check back here to see if someone has enlightened me. I do believe that as I am confused, I am not alone. I have yet in my life to ask a question that I was the only one who did not know the answer.

Thank you for listening

I just read this over and I am not sure my questions are clear. Ask me to rephrase if you think it will help.
Thank you again

It's okay for you to not join those goals and just do it as you are. It is not required for you to join the team goals. As long as you are doing the videos and marking off the weekly check boxes in the Challenge Details box on the team page, that is all that is required for you to complete the challenge.

When I joined this challenge a week ago I only joined one team goal which was the "Do at least 10 minutes of cardio 5 times per week" goal. I do about 20-30 minutes of cardio (either running on an indoor track, running outside, riding a stationary bike or doing a few of the higher impact cardio videos) plus about 15 minutes of strength training at the gym. My main question is if I should join all four goals in order to say that I am actually completing this challenge? I make exercise a priority and i'm in week 6 of starting to exercise 5 days/week, but I mainly use this challenge to make sure I don't let myself slip on my strength training and cardio. Is that okay or should I use this challenge mainly for following the bootcamp videos?

HARLEYGAL55 - If you have a heart rate monitor or another way to figure out how many calories you are burning, you can manually enter that. To do that, click on the add cardio button, then click on the button to Manually Enter Calories Burned. You can then add that info and save it to your tracker.

Each strength exercise you add to your tracker is counted as 5 minutes, so if you are adding it to both areas, you will be doubling your time (or more) than what you actually did. However, you are able to enter your exercises there by clicking on the button to track strength exercises, you can then either choose exercises from the SparkPeople library or manually enter your own there. But again, if you do that and enter it as cardio, you will be at least doubling the time that you actually did, so your fitness minutes will not be accurate.

Have another question, but not sure who to ask. I work out at Curves at least 3 x/wk. I know in the Fitness tracker under cardio I can enter the w/o, but having worked there for 5 years, I know I burn more than 200 cal. in the 30 min. which it automatically assigns me. I push myself very hard on the machines and generally am at b/t 75-80% heart rate. Is there a way of putting in a more accurate calorie count? Also, since it is both cardio & strength training, why can't I enter it under the Strength Training area, too? It has been my main strength training for years, so I would really like to be able to track it better.
Can you help, please?

I can't do the lunges in day 3 as I have knee issues. I've been thinking of substituting a leg workout from the 28 day challenge (those lunges were a little easier on my knees). Is that okay?

The coaches generally say you can start where you left off. If you were just in week 1, I'd say start over again and build your strength back up. Glad you're feeling better.

I recently joined, but got sick and missed several days. Should I rejoin or just pick up where I left off?

You can use those DVD's in place of the videos online for this challenge.

I like the idea behind the 28-day challenge, and I also like the idea of being exposed to to all the different types of exercises, but is there any way to get to the videos besides youtube? My wimpy computer is unable to play a youtube video (any video, not just exercise) for more than 30 seconds without freezing and buffering. The 10 minute Pilates video took me 20 minutes to complete, often freezing in very awkward poses. Not to mention that the computer is not in the best position to be seen while working out. I would much rather be in front of the TV.
I have the Fit Firm and Fired up DVD as well as the Cardio Blast DVD. I'm inclined to just go through 10 minutes of those every day.

You may want to consider using a different core video from our other videos on the site. Using any of the other videos found in the Video or Fitness section of the Healthy Lifestyle tab that are for your core would work to replace that one. You definitely don't want to to do something that bothers or hurts your knees.

I have had both of my knees replaced and have a very hard time doing exercises that require having my knees down on the floor. I used pillows under them to do the Day 2 video and could do some of it, but it hurts. I can't lean back from a kneeling position as instructed in the video. Are there modifications or substitutions I can use to get the benefit of the exercises?

For the videos that are strength training and you click on the button from the video page, those will show up in your strength tracker section on your fitness tracker page.

Hello Everyone! I'm in the middle of my first week. Started on Thursday. Question: Where exactly does the strength video show in my tracker. I clicked on the add to fitness tracker; but nothing is showing.

You'll receive one email each week with links to the workouts for this challenge. If you haven't received that email, you can also find them anytime by going to our Team page and looking for the box called Challenge Details. Click on the link to view the details for your current week, including the videos (which are repeated each week for the whole Bootcamp).

What browser and version of browser are you using? Do you have that trouble when you go straight through youtube?

What happens for you when you try to access them from SparkPeople? Do you get an error message? If so, what does it say? Have you tried it in a different browser?

Jen - By not meeting your calories, you can actually be working against your efforts and slowing your metabolism, along with possibly not getting the necessary nutrients. Here is an Ask the Expert page that addresses this in more detail that you may find helpful: www.sparkpeople.com/community

I've been tracking my food all week and keep coming up short on the calories by about 200-300. The problem is that I am not even hungry and if I am a couple carrots or a handful of almonds will do the trick! So why eat to just to fill up those calories? Is that bad? Not sure what to do about it or not worry? The things that I eat even keep me from wanting more chocolate!! Thanks in advance for any help and suggestions.
