I have a question about my pedometer. My doctor told me to get one and keep track of my steps since I haven't exercised in a long time. Is there some place here on SP where I can record my steps or do they not count for exercise? Do I have to find somewhere else to post them? Just wondering. This is my first SP bootcamp and it's hard for me. I am in my 60's and have COPD, but doctor said to take it slow and I could do it. Looking forward to meeting my goals.

On my way!!

It's approximate, but as long as your weight is correct, that number should be a good estimate. However, we recommend for every 10-15 pounds you lose, that you update your weight goal page to reflect your current weight (it doesn't automatically do that). So if you haven't done that yet, you may want to try that and you may see a slight difference in some of the new entries for calories burned.

To update your weight goal, you can follow the info from here: www.sparkpeople.com/community
/help_ans
wer.asp?id=43
. In step 8 though, instead of changing your weight goal, just make sure all info on there is correct, then save your changes. Saving your changes on there is what will cause the program to properly update.

When I entered the 10-minute cardio kickboxing on my fitness tracker, the site shows that I burned 169 calories. That seems high for only a 10-minute video (and I only did it once). I am 5'6 and weigh 209 and am 36. Does 169 seem correct?

Michelene gave some good advice. Something else to try is see if it will work in a different DVD player or even on your computer to see if you get the same issue. I've not had that happen before, but I suppose it could be due to using it so often.

Does it look like it has a scratch on it? Sometimes we run ours through a cleaner that my husband bought at walmart and that can help but I'm not sure how much that is and if the DVD is less than that. You might try checking on EBAY or craig's list online and seeing if you could get a used one cheaper.

I've never had that exact thing happen, but I have had DVD's stop working and I think it's just due to use. It's always good to change up your routine, so maybe you can ask the kids for something different for Christmas?

I bought "Fit, Firm and Fired Up" which I love but I can't get it to play any more. I should have asked about it this summer. When I play it I get the preview about the program and then the list of the exercises, which I click what I would like to do, then it goes back to the beginning or even to the name of my DVD. So none of the exercises can I play. Do I have to pay to get a new DVD or is there something I can do?
I am over 50 and did have my kids check it but they do not know why it's not working either as there really isn't any thing on the DVD. I'm sure I have had it now for over a year but it has not worked for 4 months.
So any suggestion you have I would like.
Thank you.

Just an FYI on fat - your saturated fats should not be more than 10% of your calories. If you are trying to break things out and look at what is going on, be aware of the sat fats.

I use a lot of avocado and baby spinach together - salads, sandwiches and tacos. The fat in the avocado helps release some of the important vitamins in the spinach that are fat soluble. Try that combo on whatever you like to reap more benefit from the spinach.

Thanks Denise! The article was very informative. I saved it to my favorites so I can refer to it again. I'm going to cut out the chart and tape it to the inside of a cupboard door.

There isn't a way to separate those out. Either way though, you still want to try to stay in your range for fat, whether it is good or "bad" fat that you eat. You may want to review our Reference Guide for Fats for some more info: www.sparkpeople.com/resource/

I have a question.....I recently added avocado and almonds to my diet to help with my cholesterol. Since then, I've been going over the limit with fats. Is there any way Spark can separate the good fat and the bad fat in the nutrition tracker? I watch the fat in all my other foods. Or should I not worry about it? Is there a way to adjust the fat in the tracker to allow for these two items so I'm not going over all the time? Or should I just try to work it off everyday? What do you think?

It could be any number of things....how much traffic is on the site, your internet service provider, your browser, your computer, etc. I am on the site at various times each day and most days and haven't experienced any slowness, so it sounds more like it could be more of an issue with your ISP, browser, or computer.

Hi LT - on that one, I have no idea. Sometimes the website is slower than others, and I believe it has to do with how much traffic is on the site. If Coach Denise knows anything different, she can respond.

LT - by one site to another do you mean leaving sparkpeople to go to a different website? I'm not the IT specialist but I think your internet speed can depend on your provider, the status of your computer, etc. Do you have a security software that you use to make sure you don't have any viruses? It can also be that possibly the websites you are going to have lots of traffic and are slow that day.

If anyone else is more of tech person than me and has another opinion, please chime in.

Why does it take so long to go from one site to another? Things seem so slow in the last week or so. I can't get things done as quickly as used to

Can you be more specific about what happens when you try to access the videos (are you not seeing the links for the videos or are the videos not playing)? If the videos aren't playing, then you may need to check and make sure your flash player is updated.

Do you have any programs that you can run that detect ads or viruses on your PC? I have one called Super Anti Spyware that is free. Whatever you use, I would say run it and then restart your computer. Maybe you have some kind of buy on there that is affecting it.

LT - when I go to my sparkpoints page and see this option:
Do a SparkPeople Web Search 1 point / day (max 1 / day) 1 ...Search Now

If I click on the Search Now link it takes me to another SP page. In the middle of the top of that page is an orange box with the word search in it. Pick any topic you want information in and type it in there. I typed in squats just to see what would come up. That search is what earns you a point for the day.

On the sparkpoints page right next to where it says Do a SparkPeople Web Search is a little info button. If you click that you get this instructional information:

www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/info_nut
ri
tion.asp?HowAndWhyID=185

I hope that helps answer your question. Have a great day!

You earn those points by actually searching. To the right of that statement, there is a text box with the heading of "Search." You would get points for typing something in there and clicking the search button to the right of the text box. However, you only get points if you are searching the web, not SparkPeople. The default is to have the option marked to search the web, so as long as you don't click on the SparkPeople option when you search, you'll receive your points.

when I go to "web search" under "START" there is a box in the upper left corner that has a picture of the wheel . Under that it states "you haven't earned SP for web search today. How do I earn the points?
I don't know what you mean by "replicate the issue" . I just go to the page & this statement is on it.
As for points, I don't mean the low number I get. They've taken off the 25 & 20 on the wheel. today , I think, the 20 was back. they used to have several 20 &/or 25 on the wheel

No problem. Glad to see you are staying committed. It helps me to have a streak to work on. I started two years ago with the goal to do 90 minutes of exercise a week as a minimum. I'm now over 100 consecutive weeks. It got to the point where I didn't want to lose my streak and in the process became an ingrained habit.

Coach Michelene, Thanks for the prompt response...did get the video done in time.
Coach Denise - put like that it makes sense...and I will try and look for progress..problem is I am a person who has always shunned exercise and this time I have taken it on as a challenge and have committed myself to the long run. I want to ensure I am doing everything right and not getting bored and dropping off! (My subconscious is still looking for reasons to NOT exercise!)

Thanks for being there for people like me! emoticon

In addition to what Michelene has said, it is helpful to do the same strength exercise videos throughout the bootcamp so that you can see the progress you make (doing them more times, adding more weight lifted, etc). If you change them each week, you wouldn't be able to see that type of progress.

You are not doing it wrong. The videos do repeat. If you have the stamina you can increase the time by doing it twice, or add your own workout to it. Typically it augments what you are already doing for those who can manage that, and as a starting place for those who are new and need more instruction on a routine.

The video links I have for week 2 seem to be the same as Week 1 !! Is that how it is supposed to be? Just repeat the same set of videos for 4 weeks...I thought it wud be different videos each week for variety and the level of intensity wud keep going up!

Today is my Day 1 of Week 2 and I am already bored just thinking about repeating the whole week :-( I havent been able to motivate myself to do the kickboxing video yet again! Hope I get a quick response so that I can do today's video.

Please let me know if I am clicking the wrong links...(I hope I am)

It won't erase anything on the site, but it will clear your browser's history and any cached pages (old versions of pages that you have visited). You should do this periodically anyway, but especially if you have trouble with a page or multiple pages as that usually clears up a lot of issues for people. I haven't heard of any other complaints of this, nor have I been able to replicate those issues, so try clearing your cache and cookies. If that doesn't help, then you may need to try a different browser to see if that makes a difference.

SINGLEMOM115, The video is strength training which is why you won't find it in the list since only the cardio workout videos are listed there. You can add the video to your tracker by clicking on the "Add to Fitness Tracker" button located at the bottom of the video page. This will automatically add it for you. Hope that helps!

Ok...I did day 2's video -- the crunchless ab workout, but can't "find" it on my fitness tracker page. HELP! I want to make sure I get credit for doing it.

I tried that on my account and your account and wasn't able to replicate that message. Have you tried clearing your cache and cookies? If not, you may need to try that. This page has info on how to clear those: www.sparkpeople.com/community

Where are you seeing that (which page) and what did you do before you got that message?

BLUEFIRESTORM86 Thanks for your question and for joining the team. The purpose of this team is to complete the challenges that are listed. Modifying exercises to accommodate personal ability is allowed. If you need to skip a day of the videos can you add it to the next day? We encourage everyone to pick up where they left off if they miss a day, but not to change up the challenge.

Personally I had to stop mid-challenge due to shoulder surgery, so i'm looking forward to being able to pick it back up next month when my doctor releases me to do these types of workouts.

Thanks SARAH ... i think i am gonna try to balance my calories between both meals...and keep working out at night...so even if i don't lose weight...i wouldn't b gaining any.

And i could probably start all over on this challenge after Ramadan. Thanks!

Hi everyone!

S I just started this challenge a few days ago, but I'm also adhering to a previously started ST program.

My question is can I still fulfill a day in this challenge without doing the specific videos laid out in the challenge, because of the 45 min ST I'll be doing for the other program? I'm still doing the 30 mins/day of cardio.

HINAZA, It might be tricky to get your workouts in and eat properly during Ramadan, but I think it can be done. I think your best bet if it's possible is to do your workouts in the morning since you'll have food in your stomach to help you get through the workout. I think exercising during the day might make you feel too weak and dehydrated due to lack of food and water. Your other option would be to exercise at night, but that might not feel so great after eating your largest meal of the day.

Also, you might find it helpful to eat a bigger breakfast so that you are fuller longer and maybe your hunger levels won't be as high by the evening. Maybe try splitting your calories for the day in two and eat half of them in the morning and half of them at night. You want to be eating a balanced meal of protein, carbs and fats. I would aim to eat foods that are high in fiber like whole grains and vegetables since this will help you feel fuller longer. Your weight loss may stall a bit due to this shift in metabolism, but if you're getting your workouts in and staying within calorie range you're ahead of the game and you will lose weight after Ramadan is over in a couple weeks. Best of luck!

Sarah

Hi, i am sort of new to this challenge...well i have completed week 1... now i am on week 2 but i have couple of concerns..

1. i haven't lost a single lb. ( i can mayb blame tht on my weird diet)
2. i have to fast for like next 15 days(due to religious duties) so the only time i can eat is at 5am and then 8:30pm ....in the morning i am not v hungry so i eat healthy breakfast...like cerel or egg n toast along with juice or cup of milk....but in the evening i am very very very hungry so i end up eating alot...n somtimes fried stuff...
I NEED TO KNOW THAT WHEN I BREAK MY FAST IN THE EVENING WHAT SHOULD I EAT? that would satisfy my hunger and complete my nutritions that i need in a day.

3. Along with fasting...should i workout during the day? (i think its gonna make me thirsty.. emoticon ) or what time would u suggest me for workout?
