So glad you made the goal! I was not sure I was going to make it for a few days. I hit a huge block and then had one of those shower epiphanies and BAM there was the rest of the story:) I am going to get working on my ideas for July's Camp NanoWrimo so I can make notes!

Okay. I'm beat, but I did it ... whatever that means when you're doing a hybrid outlining / drafting project. I wrote about it at my blog, if you want to pop over.

I've got some loose ends to tie up today, then I need to sleep, then I need to work tonight. You guys interested in a thread or a team goal where we have a quota here at Writers? Like a monthly challenge to meet a goal word count. I'm trying to figure out how it would work ... I mean how we'd track it. Hours? Words? Both? I could set it up so participants message me with their May goal (for example) and I'd create a team goal in which we'd work toward our collective total.

Maybe 2 or 3 hours (outlining, etc) = 1,000 words? Then we set our individual goals in increments of 1,000 words?

Congratulations, you guys. We ALL did well - probably more than we would have otherwise, right?

I am a Camp Nano winner! I hit my goal of 30K words:D My final word count is 30,018!!! I am going to think about my project for July. I am thinking another novella so now I am going to figure out what that will be. I am not sure it will be another Ryker Collins Novella yet but it will be another contemporary I think:) SO EXCITED! Anyone who is finishing up you can do it!!

Haven't been hitting the PC as much as I should, so I'm way behind and I've been in a funk.

Then, I found out at 11 PM last night the book I co-authored last year, The Calico Heart (I write as Stephanie Michels), has made it to the FINAL round of the RONE awards for best romance of 2013 in the "Contemporary, General" category.

Needless to say, that news pulled me completely out of the funk I was in! Now, I really have motivation to stay on track and look my best for the RONE award dinner at the Annual Romance Novel Conference in Las Vegas in July (I don't anticipate winning, but just being a nominee is honor enough for me)!

I am so excited!!

Hitting the keys hard now to finish book three in this series.

I am 4,417 words away from my goal. I am SO going to get this done:) I put a major hit into my story tonight and it will serve as the catalyst for the end of my novella...something huge is going to go down before the end of this and I know exactly how this will end:)

And my Wednesday didn't quite turn out. I wasn't home ALL DAY. It was rather unexpected. I think I have to modify mine to be "2 hours before Saturday" just from looking at the schedule these next two days. When did all this stuff get scheduled!?

Just finished my first session of the day with 1,088 words written. Most of it was dialogue but I enjoy writing dialogue so it went great. I am hoping to do session two tonight after dinner and I will be working out at least another 1,000 words to put me even closer to the 15K mark. I will most likely pass that and get into the 16 or 17K mark by Sunday evening:D

I'm trying to use Camp Nano to help me just get writing done. So far I've written a tenth of my goal, which isn't bad but not great either. I have lots I can be working on and writing, but...ugh, what's wrong with me?

The book I'm working on is third in a series that takes place with women who met in a quilt shop. The first was a 55 year old married woman whose marriage hits a snag when she and her husband nearing an early retirement.

The second is a story of a 26 year old young woman who has escaped an abusive marriage and is hiding from her ex-husband.

The one I'm working on is about an widowed woman who reconnects with a man from her past who is 10 years younger. She refuses to go to dinner with him as she feels it might upset her grown kids. She has to come to terms with both the age difference and her belief dating him would be somehow "unfaithful" to her late spouse.

So far, I'm just outlining, but I have the benefit of the character sketches of all the quilters and townspeople before we ever sat down to write the first book.

I have decided that once this novella gets an edit etc, I am going to release it as an e-book:) That will take a while though but it will be fun to have a novella out. I was actually thinking today of making it a series of novellas all with the same main character and giving the series a title but I am still toying with that idea:)

I'm trying out something called yWriter 5. In fact I'm doing double duty this month, both working up the novel AND testing the program so that I can write about at my wordpress blog.

If you think NaNo might help inspire / motivate you, I don't think it's too late to sign up. Because you can set your own goal fro camp, you'd just set your actual target for the remaining days in April there. Extra motivation, maybe.

Renae, what program are you using for your outlining?

I'm not signed up for Camp Nano, but I think I need to do my own unofficial version as I need to get a book FINISHED and submitted by June 30. I need to get cranking...big time!

I'm starting to pick up some speed. I'm trying out a new program to help me get my outlining done, and there's been a bit of a learning curve. (I think I do like it though ... I keep running into features I don't need yet, but that will be really useful when the time comes.)

I'm about 7% done with the outlining portion of the project, but I expect that will start to come faster as I settle in to understanding what I'm doing and where I'm going.

I know that's weirdly specific, but I already know that there will need to be about 60 scenes to get to the right total word count (for a complete novel of about 75-80,000 words) so I start with that structure in place. I just have to figure out what happens in each of those 60 sections :)

Rob, I'm so pleased for you that your process is working well for you. You're really doing great AND you seem like you're having fun. (And that's what it's all about, right?)

It is amazing what adding a new character and using a different place as a backdrop, even temporarily can move a story along:) The character is here to stay but the main character is going to have to go back to his own town soon. I think I am going to have fun with then first!

Yes - we really drifted in this thread!!

Good luck to all of you at writing camp!

Renae - love the story so far. I wonder if Jeremiah Breed will help Ollie with her pesky ex or if the creatures of the muddy lake will get him.

Wow, threads do go off in their own directions, huh? I was so confused by the top post when I came in that I backed out to make sure I'd clicked the right link. Now that I've read the thread, it makes perfect sense, but I find it amusing.

So, yeah, I'm at nano camp with Rob this month. I haven't had a great first day but I could be up for hours yet, so we'll see how it goes.

I don't have a clean synopsis to share, just an overriding idea. Here's what I know so far:

Ollie (short for Olivia) Dawson is a 21 year old bartender in a small town emoticon in north-central Minnesota -- not up in the old-growth pine forest area, but rather south of there, where the land is mostly flat and farmed or regrown. Of course there are nearby lakes, but nothing spectacular. This is not a tourist village. It's a quiet, boring town which is just barely hanging on, and it's always been that way.

Ollie has a toddler, and a restraining order against her ex-husband who comes around sometimes, causes some chaos, then leaves ... for a while. She wasn't a great student, even though she's smart and well-read. She drinks and smokes (hand-rolled cigarettes and a little weed) but disdains anything harder. Her look and her lifestyle lean toward retro/rockabilly.

One slow afternoon, while Ollie is working, a stranger (Jeremiah Beed) comes into the bar and waits long hours for someone who never shows up. Beed is an older guy (in his mid to late 40s) whose face, build and hands all look like they could belong to a local, but whose clothes and accessories indicate a more urban, affluent lifestyle. Eventually Ollie learns that he was supposed to meet a guy who was going to do some work for him on a piece of property Beed just bought.

It turns out that Ollie knows exactly which property he means. It fronts the highway, but it's eastern boundary is a smaller road that the locals call Bugaboo Road. (It's really named something similar - maybe Burgereau.) The road, and the land it borders, has a spooky reputation because people, animals and things sometimes seem to just appear and disappear from the area. This is very subtle, and most folks think it's just a story meant to scare kids away from the highway and the small, muddy lake that Bugaboo road leads to.

Then there's a bunch of story which leads to Ollie taking strange kind of job from Beed. He wants someone to live in a brand new double-wide trailer on the land for several months to sort of supervise a construction crew that will be building on the property and to watch over the construction itself when no one is there.

As the story unfolds Ollie will learn that Beed has a special interest in the property because his father was one of the people who disappeared from Bugaboo Road -- probably the most famous of them all, in fact.

And it goes somewhere from there, but I'm not sure where yet.

Writing up this little piece has actually helped. I've got to go do SP stuff now, but I feel like my head is more in the game now, and that's a good thing.

PS: Rob, thanks for starting this thread.

Yup! Definitely pronounced "Wooster" but you would be hard pressed to hear the "r" from even some Central MA dwellers. Some us drop those pesky "Rs" haha.

Are you asking where I grew up? I grew up in Cedar Grove, NJ and now live in Louisburg, KS. Come visit!!

And isn't Worcester pronounced Wooster? At least that's how I've always pronounced it.

Sturbridge / Brimfield / Palmer area? that's what I think of for central mass small towns. :)
Although, that's a little western. Could be outside of Worcester. (NOT pronounced war-chester,)

In the 50's and 60's when I was growing up, the town's population was a little less than 6,000. It's about 12,000 today - so very small.

Of course, the town I live near today has about 4200 people, and that includes country.

Sue and Rob - how funny! I grew up in a teeny tiny town on the east coast. We had a chief of police and he did everything from handing out speeding tickets to detective work to you-name-it. Sort of like a sheriff in some western towns, but he called himself a policeman. Of course, when we had a girl raped in the woods behind the library - I remember my mom warning us not to "go back there" - we had NYC police. Or were they feds? Hard to know it all happened so long ago and did not hit the news. Of course, that was SO many years ago. Things are different now.

So FITADMIN, is the setting a small town? A very small town? If yes, Sue is probably right. It might make a difference!!

I'm originally from a small town in Massachusetts and now working in one: Yes, the Detective in town not only writes speeding tickets, but joined the "Boston Marathon Team" for the manhunt in Dartmouth. Small town employees wear many hats.

EDIT: Maybe he was at the park with his family on his day off, or walking his dog if he doesn't have a family. Maybe his dog found the body and dragged him to it.

Stacy, you both have great ideas.

Dexter, the Showtime serial murderer, is told from his point of view. Not sure if it was in a book 1st or not, nor have I watched it more than once.
I have friends who love to watch it, though.

FITADMIN - Great that you are doing the project. I wonder, though, whether police detectives have a routine patrol. Seems to me they are always being called to the "scene" of a murder after someone else discovers the body. At least that's what seems to happen on the 6 o'clock news!

I've always wondered what would happen if a serial killer novel was written from the POV of the killer. Maybe someone has already written that - Truman Capote?

Here is the synopsis for my project for this April. Feedback is always welcome:)

Ryker Jones is a police detective in a small Massachusetts town. One night he is on a routine patrol and comes across a body in the local park. This is only the beginning and as the summer rolls on more bodies are found, strange clues are left and Ryker must use all his training while working with his partner Jake to put the clues together and catch a serial killer.

Hello Writers!

On the wonderful advice of RRUDEPARANORMAL, I am going to be participating in the April edition of NanoWrimo called Camp NanoWrimo. It is essentially the same thing as regular Nano but with this one you can choose your word count in addition to your genre and all the other great things that regular Nano offers. If anyone else is taking on this awesome idea please post here let us know:) I would love to be able to support each other through another great journey and fun activity that we all enjoy. I am going to tackle a contemporary novella this time (shooting for 30K on the word count). I am not sure the story or title yet but I am going to go through my idea bin and pick something fun. Here goes nothing!
