I agree, take on a small job. Something you can do without too much effort...and go from there. That way all you have lost is a bit of time if it goes wrong, but do not give up there. There are still a lot of honest people in this world and the good news is they're out there looking for help.

Just a thought to pass along.
Have a way to take payments instantly also...such as PAYPAL or 2checkout. It makes the process easier than waiting on a check in the mail or wire service. The good news about PAYPAL it gives them security to get their money back if you fail to give them their product. So that provides them with a little security also.

I get email from a writer's network that reviews sites like these. There is another I'm interested in, but elance was the one that I figured would be most recognized. I figured it would at least build up my resume and give me a reason to write. Scammers are a main concern so I will definitely have to choose carefully.

A few years ago...I was having a hard time and I added my resume to Freelancing and I took on several jobs that I was paid for. Not a great amount of money was it, but it was a pretty steady income. The more I did...the more recognition I received by the site itself. Of course they made a percentage of what I made so it made sense for them to recommend me on their main pages.

I did everything from grant writing to website building. I always set the fee based on what the offer was and prior to me doing the work....the website I was affiliated with took the payment up front once we agreed and did not deposit it into my account until the project was completed. Of course minus their commission.

The world is full of scammers as we all know and the internet is an easy prey...but do not let that guide you. If you feel that you can work with a group then by all means try it out. You can only loose once then on to another.

I can tell you this it helped me out quite a bit in the beginning that first couple of years. It allowed me to stay home and recover from an injury and work at my own speed. I now hire freelancers to help me out from time to time as my home based business has picked up.

No personal experience but having been burned by freelancing, I would look over the contract very carefully. And you may have already read the reviews of elance.com at www.indeed.com/cmp/Elance/reviews

I am curious about if anyone here has any experience with websites such as elance.com to take assignments. From what I understand is you put in bids for projects and the owner chooses someone based on their bid and if they feel confident after viewing their profile.

My Auntie (Robin Tracy author of Eyes Without A Face) also works on a site like this and does regular assignments for an educational material publisher.

I would love to get more than just one person's feedback before I make my decision.
