Good Morning Writers!

Love the standing/walking desk idea. I've been after my DH to build me one (he makes all our wood furniture). I have a friend who talked her employer into purchasing a standing desk for her and it's made SUCH a difference in the way she feels!!

As for failure - I firmly believe that we all learn from failure and as MARCIA_DC says, from stretch goals. Unless we struggle, we never learn how to pick ourselves up and move forward.

Beautiful day here in Kansas, maybe still a bit chilly but warming up. Unfortunately, I'm stuck minding the telephone, waiting on a call about our replacement stove. Oh well. I have plenty to do inside as well as outdoors!!

Have a wonderful day.

"Where's the failure so she can learn?" That's such a good point. It sounds like stretch goals are in order for her. She may not fail, but she will struggle -- and since we only fail when we quit, that may be enough.

My friend's hubby just surprised her by building a treadmill desk. She has increased her steps from under 5,000 to over 10,000. I have been thinking of building one for awhile. Now I am definitely going to do it! I have been sacrificing walking for editing. If I build it, I can do BOTH! Why didn't I realize I had the solution months ago?

Thanks, Marcy, for that little blast of optimism in the face of my pessimism! I needed that!! And in fact, I was highly encouraged by the Writers Group!!

Hope things are going well for all. As Marcy says, we're waiting for our rain/ice/snow event. A lot depends on where we are and where the weather goes ... not too different from any other weather event.

FITADMIN - I hope the writer's group works out for you. We have one in my area, but it is 30 miles away. I either forget about it, or just don't want to travel that far at night after working all day.

RRUDEPARANORAL - Great job on organizing the team. Question - do you ever sleep?

Stacy - we are expecting either rain, ice or snow tomorrow. It is nice that they have it narrowed down so good. No one will tear you apart at writer's group. I believe it is called "constructive criticism" not "tear apart and discourage"

Have a great night everyone.

Good Morning Writers,

Marcy - sounds like you had a wonderful time with maple syrup! Aren't maple trees the most amazing trees?

FITADMIN - good for you! Prepare for a little tough criticism if your group is anything like mine. Gotta love that "tough love" and not let it discourage you.

Hip hip hooray for RRUDEPARANORAL for her amazing work in organizing our team.

I have a busy day today, so I'm glad our SNOW - yes, snow - is holding off till this evening. We're going from 70F to snow in a 12 hour period. Crazy!! Meanwhile, I have to go pick out a new range - finally got customer service to actually replace this lemon they sold us - get my IRA situated in its new, retired location, and go to Writer's Group. I'm up tonight, so I expect to be torn apart!!

Have a wonderful day all!!

Today we went to a local maple sugar producer. They have a pseudo restaurant on site. During maple season they open as a pancake house. So we went and had pancakes, pumpkin spice waffles with maple whip and homemade maple syrup. Yum. I bought some maple cream to go on the bagels from yesterday, and now I am making homemade strawberry jam in my bread machine.

I love weekends.

Good Morning Writers!

Marcy - glad you're feeling better!

This morning, we're off north to see my 10 year old granddaughter play her last basketball game of the season. She's tall - dad is 6'2" and mom is about 5'11" so we suspect DGD will be at least six feet when she's fully grown. Right now, she's head and shoulders above the girls in her class and in the class ahead of her! And she can also sink baskets like a champ. My biggest worry for her is she does everything well. Where's the failure so that she can learn??

Oh well, she's only 10.

Have a great day, all!

Good Morning Writers!

Today is supposed to be almost warm - upper 50's and maybe 60's. But then it's supposed to snow tonight and tomorrow. Welcome to weather!! Normally I'd say welcome to Kansas weather, but I guess the entire country has been like us this year.

Have a wonderful Friday!!!

Good Morning Writers!

Marcy - hope you start feeling better soon!!

I've had some feedback from one of my readers on my story - so now, of course, it's back to the drawing board! I need a little more conflict. I have it in my head, now I just need to get it on paper. Since this comes from my one non-professional reader (she's a friend and not a writer/editor) we'll see what the others say. I just want to be ready... I so love a friend who isn't afraid to be honest!!

It's actually going to be a bit warmer here today. Sure hope so, since we are moving our clocks forward on Saturday and it would be sad to have more daylight in freezing cold temps!

Have a great day all!

Stacy - I hope your short story is going great.

I had the flu and now it looks like it has turned into bronchitis. My chest hurts and I'm hacking up green slimy stuff. Just lovely. So it has been cold medicine and early bed for me this week. Tonight is no exception.

I'm down to 4 Tax returns. so that has slowed down, but this time of year I like to call my problem children. In February - I get the simple ones who know they are getting a refund and want it yesterday. March slows down with the # of returns I do, but I end up and spend longer on each return that I do because this is the time for self employed people or people with investments, who normally do not have everything they need. April is normally for people who know they have to pay in and are putting it off as long as they possibly can. Even though I tell them every year that they can file anytime and still take until April 15th to pay. I think it's a mental thing.

You're totally right about short stories. I did a seminar last month on short story writing. Many of my friends are publishing them between their longer novels. It's a great way to explore subplots that may be less than 90K worthy.

Good luck to the both of you on the short story front!

Good Morning Writers!

FITADMIN - great news!! Short stories are coming back!

SYLIVIEFOX - woohoo! Can't wait to read it.

JARBRITT - April 15 will be here soon - I know my tax preparer is looking a bit haggard and I'm so happy my taxes are done!!

I'm trying to finish up a short story myself this morning for the Dark Markets post apocalyptic world contest. Not so easy since I haven't written fiction for - oh - 20 years.

And would you believe it's going to snow here AGAIN today. The crocus should be in bloom and maybe even the jonquils. What a winter!!

Have a great day all!

Good afternoon all! Releasing a new book today, so that's keeping me super busy. Plus, my 4yo is home sick. Hoping I don't fall ill, myself. Got my spinning in, so that's good. Today's goal to keep within the calorie range!

Hi everyone- I have a brief respite from taxes. I got all caught up over the weekend. I have 3 990's to do for the non profits that I help. I have one Trust I have to do. And then a neighbor called me in a panic because his girlfriend (both in their 80's) got a notices that both her 2011 and 2012 returns do not match what was reported from the banks as interest and dividends.
Another preparer did her returns those years and never returned her original paperwork. So now not only do I have this year to do for her, I have to recreate the 2 previous years to figure out what the other preparer did.

My husband works nights next week - so I am planning to work on the above problems during the daytime and edit that blasted novel that is mocking me.

Have a great week ahead everyone.

Good Morning Writers!

We got something last night. Something slippery. Not snow. Not sleet. Not ice. Something. And since it's now about 9 degrees outside, we are staying in today.

I hope the weather is more moderate where you are!!

Hi Everyone!

I had a great day today at the new job. I found out after my second day that I will not be continuing on the assignment because the agency I am working with did not realize the company needed the equivalent of an accountant because they just stated a need for data entry when they approached the agency for help and I am in NO way able to do that kind of work as I do not have the training for that so back to the drawing board. I am going to rest an look to the future!

Good Morning Writers!

Another busy day today and with a big storm predicted for Friday night into Saturday, I also need to stop by the grocery and stock up. I'm looking for blood oranges and baby kale - not together although even as I write this, the possibilities are intriguing.

Dottee - good luck with the taxes. We just got ours done yesterday and for us, end of February is late.

Today my DH is going to join the gym I found - I'm so excited to be working out with him without having to learn golf!!

Have a wonderful day all!

Good Morning all,
Interesting information Sylvie! I publish my own books and use Morris Publishing for my printing. I've done 6 books with them and am very happy with the results...soft cover, books only. I'm really not into e-books. Not a career for me either since I'm retired and have 21 grandchildren and lots of other things to do.

We have a wicked cold day here today! It's 13 deg. out and the high will not be much higher. I have to go to the dentist to get my tooth repaired. The filling fell out the other day. Not one of my favorite things to do.LOL

Taxes, taxes. I have to do that too...first sales taxes for my business and then the federal taxes. I will get going on the sales taxes today. Then I will tackle the others.

Wishing everyone a great Wednesday! It's hump day. We are halfway through the week already!

Smashwords, DiggyPod, etc., all cost you something (though SW doesn't have upfront costs, but they take a percentage of all sales).

Unless you're outside the US, there's little reason to start with these venues. CreateSpace, for example, lets you set up and sell your PODs for FREE. The only cost is if you order copies for yourself - which are about $5 for the average book.

You can upload your book to Amazon (through KDP), Barnes & Noble (through NookPress), Kobo (through Kobo Writing Life), and Apple (through iTunes Producer) for FREE. Except for editing and covers - there should be no cost to you during this process. There are various author information loops like Kindle Boards that you can look to for information about the process.

Hope this helps.

Hey. Sorry I've been absent. I got sick and was down for a good 4-5 days. Thankfully I'm back up and exercising. I'm not gonna let it get in my way. I think it was the sudden weather changes we've been having. I was perfectly fine until we had those 2 days of 50 degree weather.

Hope everyone else is staying well.

Thanks Sylvie,
Smashwords seems to encompass all the eBook markets with the most flexibility. I guess my main concern is hidden fees that crop up.

I'm also looking into DiggyPod, if anyone has experience with them. Their sample book was great quality and they didn't hesitate to send one. I'd like to know that they deliver the product they promise, and correct any problems that occur. (their error, not author error)

My plan is to release the eBook format, take my lumps from reader reviews, and then publish the paperback version if all goes well. I have a beginner editor willing to trade 'time' with me. I'm not writing this series to start a new career so I'm willing to take the chance and give a new editor experience. Plus I have avid mystery readers who are willing to 'beta test' my books.

I have some experience with Smashwords. What would you like to know?

Most indie writers I know use it as one of many platforms to publish their books, though Amazon, of course, is the main sales venue. Additionally, people use Smashwords as a distributor to other vendors that they can't reach themselves (outside of the US for B&N, or don't have a Mac for Apple).

Good Morning Writers!

Busy day today and it sounds like it's busy for many of you! I have a first session with a personal trainer. Did the Silver Sneakers class yesterday and whew it was pretty intense for us older folks! I'm a bit achy this morning. Then I have two critiques to do for writer's group tonight. My excuse for leaving it till the last minute? Just received them yesterday! Plus working on a story of my own for a contest - need to get it put together for a couple of readers. And finally, my last 1099 came in so I'm off to the accountant first thing this morning.

How did I ever fit in work?

Have a wonderful day, all!!

Hi Ladies,
That is a great gym Stacy.

I did all my chores today: got the bloodwork for potassium done, brought in paperwork for my Star exemption for my property taxes, purchased stamps at the post office, stopped at the local store for bread, cooked chili for supper, called my granddaughter to wish her a Happy Birthday. And walked my 6,200+ steps. What a day!!! I still have to plan my food for tomorrow.

emoticon Good Night

Hi Sue! No experience with Smashwords - we have some folks here with lots of experience with Wattpad and maybe they'll chime in...

Dottee - planning a day ahead is a good idea. Then it's just a matter of follow-through. I run into the problem of not everyone "feeling like" eating chicken and salad sometimes. Or kale and mushrooms...

Today is going to be busy. I found a gym only 22 miles away but it has EVERYTHING including pool, saunas, hot tub, classes, everything! And it's all paid for by Silver Sneakers. Yay! I'm going to the first Silver Sneakers class, and DH is going to sign up. We have books to donate to the library and some kitchen items to donate to Goodwill. Then we're off to look at yet more Jeeps. Not quite sure why except that I think DH imagines himself tooling around in one...

Have a wonderful day all!!

Hi Sue welcome to the group!

I took a day off today and read all day and finished the book, "The First Phone Call from Heaven." It was quite good especially the ending. Now back to reality. I've decided to plan my food for one day ahead, the night before. So now that is what I am going to do right now.

Good Night everyone! emoticon

Hello Writers,
I am new to Spark People and relatively new to writing. I look forward to meeting you all.

Has anyone had any experiences with Smashwords? So far, they are at the top of my list for publishing my cozy mystery series.

Good Morning Writers!

Dottee - sorry about your day. I hate it when my electronics aren't working. We have a "hole" in our WiFi that occurs about 8pm every evening. For some reason that no one can figure out, it just stops whatever it does to let us all online. I'm learning to not try and use WiFi from 8pm to 9. Do you think it's meditating? Good choice on the fish fry!

Marcy - feel better soon, please, and let's hope those taxes start cooperating. You're doing a bunch and I have only mine, but I'm waiting on something called a K1. I've never filed this late!!

Our local gym is not a participating Silver Sneakers gym, so DH and I are going to drive around to see which other gym is closest (the nearest one is 25 miles away) and what they have to offer. Maybe we just won't do Silver Sneakers ...

Have a wonderful day!!

Hello everyone,
Well, I had one of those days where everything seemed to go wrong. First of all I couldn't get the TV to go on with the remote that I just had replaced. I played around with it so much I think I got it out of sync somehow and had to have an on line chat with a technician to see if he could direct me on how to do it. I was almost ready to have a tech come to the house when magically it turned on. Now I'm afraid to turn it off.

Then this afternoon I decided to get a copy of my 2012 income taxes out to take over to the town hall to reapply for a discount on them when I couldn't find them; I searched forever and 2 hours later I found them. It was really too late to do any of the other chores I need to do so I'll have to do them tomorrow.

After all this I decided to order a fish fry from a restaurant down the street and had it DELIVERED to my house. I deserved a treat after those two big problems that took up my whole day. It was delicious and I only ate half of it.

Good Night and sweet dreams! emoticon

Hi Jane -

I've started a process of searching online for writing contests. I'm particularly interested in anything that looks at essays - numbers of interesting ones for that - gardening, and sci-fi/fantasy, which if I write fiction is my genre.

As for starting a Blog, we have some experienced Bloggers on the team. When I started newgardenerblues.wordpress.com I took advice from the team to start with a free Blog at Word Press. You might try there! It was a little bit of work to set up but I'm pretty happy with the results!

Sunny and almost warm here today. And we're all starting to feel like spring could be just around the corner!!

Stacy,
If I may ask, where do you find these contests/competitions?
thanks.

Also, can anyone steer me to where I can find out about setting up my own blog? Thanks.

We had one nice day, now back to winter with freezing rain and wintry mix predicted for tonight. We're going to run errands this morning and then hunkering down for the next couple of days.

Writers Group last night was interesting. Had wonderful feedback on my short story (or at least the first 1000 words). Now I have to get the draft in order for contest submission.

We got 6 inches of snow over night and a 2 hour delay for the school. My son took my car to work, because mine is 4-wheel drive and his isn't. So I'm home with no wheels because I refuse to drive my husband's truck. I was supposed to go to the library to help the librarian with her annual report, but that will have to wait until tomorrow.

Have a great one everyone.

I agree with everyone - weight loss was easier in my 30's than it is in my 60's.

Sylvie - glad that ad blocker worked out for you. I'm in heaven with how fast my pages are loading!!

Jane - today we're supposed to get up into the 60's but it's a one-day-wonder. Back to a "wintry mix" by Thursday. And what a winter it's been!

Dottee - glad you got out for your massage and to the library before the next round of winter storms hits the east. I heard on the news last night that the weathermen are expect three or four more storms this year.

Marcy - glad you're writing!! Stop by Los Lideres and check out new possibilities!

Yay for RRUDEPARANORMAL who is bringing some needed structure to our Writing Lives!! Everyone have a great day - I'm off to Writers Group this evening. They have my first submission so I'm curious to see what they make of it.

Let me leave you with a sign I saw yesterday and that I wrote about in my Spark Blog:

"No trespassing without written permission!"

Really??!!

Hi everybody,
I had a massage today. I really need it.. I also had to get a few things from the grocery store and some good books to read so I also stopped by the library on the way home. Then I went home and made my yummy salmon for supper. I bought lots of fruits and veggies.

I got 6,800 steps in today! Yay me! I'm not getting any writing in at the moment. I just can't seem to get back into it lately.

Good evening writers!

Thanks for the tip on the ad blocker from our fearless leader. Some websites were nearly unloadable. Hope all was well for you today. DS is home for a week during February break, so I'm working on my PR posts for my book launch in two weeks.

Exercising every day, but struggling with the weight here. It was much easier to do this years ago . . . .

So today is the day!!!!!
I finally got under my "frozen" ticker which has been stuck at 228. It was stuck because I didn't want to move it up to one more pound!

I had a four pounds loss, which is extraordinary for me at this advanced age! (67 emoticon )

t takes so much longer to lose a pound than it did when I was 25. In fact, I don't think I can do anything as fast as when I was 25 except fall asleep in my chair! EEEEKKKK!

Cheers to everyone. Keep warm everyone! Or come visit me. It will be 75 and sunny here today. I will accept that!

Hi there - I took a writers day yesterday. I turned on the Olympics and wrote/edited all day and most of the night. Today I must work on tax returns, but after that I can do more editing. We are supposed to have more snow today and tomorrow, but so far, not even a flake. I feel like I am coming down with the flu.

Have a great day everyone.

JANEWATKINS - glad to see you here and hope the demands of the 1947 team don't keep you away again!!

Here it's going to be in the 50's today and in the 60's by midweek. Everyone is hoping winter is over, but I'm afraid it will get cold again ...

SHINEE - I love Chicago - great place to visit!! Hope you enjoyed your trip.

Marcy - sorry your daughter is sick. Hope she's better soon and that she returns your Fire to you. I don't let the grandkids play with mine. The iPhone, yes, but not my Fire.

Dottee - no more snow, right? You'll get your massage!!

The sun is up, the sky is cloudless, it just HAS to be a good day. I'm going back to clearing out my kitchen but after a while I'm going outside for a walk.
