Marcy - sounds delicious. What time is dinner?

We are still waiting for the predicted snow - it's gradually dropped from about 40F this morning to freezing. And from sunny to overcast. But still, no snow. I have to go to the ophthalmologist first thing in the morning, so I'm hoping the snow holds off till tomorrow afternoon!

Have a good day everyone!

Hi- I am cooking today. Pork , sauerkraut, pierogie casserole, sourdough bread. My friend and her husband are coming for supper. My Dd and I UN-decked the halls, and my dh and Ds took care of everything.

I am day 3 of adding the exercise bike to my daily workout.

Stay warm and safe for anyone in the path of Hercules.

Dottee - you can edit your steps. The Fit bit reverts back only for 3 days, so you go in to your fitness tracker on day 3 and change the number of steps. Hit save and it will stay. You can do the same thing daily, but the fit bit will change it back when it syncs.

We are getting snow and we are in the low teens. I don't think it is fair that we get both really cold and snow on the same day.

Good Morning Writers,
As you can see I slept in today. I just could not get to sleep last night. I think I was still wound up over the dream I had the night before.

I am really hoping to get my weight to goal this coming year.I was so upset yesterday. I was dancing with the kiddos for at least 1/2 hour and I forgot to put my tracker on. Bummer. So I didn't get my 6,000 steps in. I tried to enter it manually but it wouldn't stay.

Marcy Woo Hoo for you getting that novel done and right on schedule too. I do some editing as I go to. It just seems to be a natural thing I do.

Stacy it's wonderful you have some great plans for retirement. I am so busy retired I don't know how I ever had time to work before. That blog sounds interesting.

Camy emoticon it's nice to meet you. I write historical fiction middle grade novels something like Little house on the Prairie. I will be starting my 7th one this year. I hear you about the snacking as you write. I tend to do that, too. Nice to see you here!

Well, our NYE party is on at my DD's house tonight. It starts at 6:30 pm and we will celebrate new years at 10:00 pm LOL The older folks and ones with kids can't bear to stay up till 12 so we are celebrating early! But I'll be up at home till after 12.

Happy New Year's Eve everyone! emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Welcome Camy! We're glad to have you here.

Today it's almost warm enough for me to go outside for a walk - I'm so excited! I'm also off work today, and have only three in-office days left.

I'm seriously thinking about starting a gardening Blog - since I'm a novice gardener, I figure I'll get to write about my foibles, faults, and failures!! Any Bloggers out there, feel free to give me lots of advice!!

Happy New Year, all!!

Hi everyone, thought I'd introduce myself. I'm Camy Tang, and I'm a Christian fiction author. I recently restarted here on SparkPeople after almost a year away and I also just joined SparkCoach if any of you are there.

I write primarily romantic suspense, although I do women's fiction work-for-hire for Guideposts books and I have a Regency romance coming out in August 2014, which will be under a pen name, Camille Elliot.

My primary goal in 2014 is to stop myself from snacking as I write!!!!!! That has contributed singlehandedly to my weight gain. I know I'm only lying to myself that I need snacks to write, so I want to break the habit in such a way that I won't revert back to snacking on chips and cookies when I'm stressed or under deadline.

Nice to see everyone here!

Give yourself a large pat on the back and take yourself out for a big reward!! You did it!!!

Dottee -

I really think I'll love being retired. I can write what I like - I'm thinking about a "novice gardener" Blog - something very different for me and consistent with my novice gardening! I can also exercise more and hang out with the grandkids.

We have three new members since yesterday - hope they join us here!!

I finished the novel - and am now editing. I tend to edit as I go, so I only have the last few chapters to actually edit. The off to the proof readers and onto my daughter's book club. I promised her I would finish It this year, and by 1 day, I kept my promise.

Good Morning Team,
Stacy will be following you into the freezer starting tomorrow. That is so great that you will be retired in 13 days. Yay! I bet you will love it! I do.

I woke up with a headache and a bad dream this morning, and ended getting up earlier than usual.

VERO_DEN Christmas was great and busy. I'm looking forward to getting back into routine too.

Waving to the rest of the team! Have a great Monday everyone! emoticon

Good Monday Morning All!

It's a great Monday morning here in Kansas even though the thermometer reads 10F. This is the second-to-last Monday that I need to come into the office. Hard to believe that in 13 working days, I will be retired!!

Marcy - sounds like you've been busy! Hope your DH's team won - the Chiefs lost and, once again, my DH swears he won't watch them ever (he will).

Dottee - It's always wonderful when the grown-up kids think of something special to do. A meal with your DS sons great!

Yay Marcy! Did you finish the novel? I bet your office is fantastic after all the work you put into it.

I'm a little bit late on tonight. My DS asked me over for supper and then I had to get my steps in because I forgot to wear the tracker part of the day. But I DID IT.

I am working on some goals for the new year but I'm not finished yet. I also went to church this morning, got groceries, and took a short nap after lunch. A quiet day.

I spent the day cleaning, organizing, moving everything in my office. I now have a happy office, and a tired body. Mu husband is going to watch the Cowboys game tonight, so I am going to take the computer into the bedroom, and hopefully finish my daughter's novel.

Marcy sorry your trip was a disappointment. At least you got some writing done on your novel. And I bet your mom was glad to see you.

I went to a birthday party for my 4 year old grandson Jackie. It was fun but oh my, there was an extra meal right there. Why do all our celebrations have to center around food?

Hi everyone - I just got back from my mother's house. I took my novel with me and wrote like mad after everyone else went to bed. I left my husband home. Being with Mom is so depressing, but she's my Mom, and I don't visit as often as I should. I call her every day, but actually seeing her in person is so hard on me and my daughter. We ended up and did not stay as long as we intended.

Good Morning Everyone,

Stacy yes the food part about Christmas is always a problem for me. I'm glad you don't have too many leftovers.

I finally had the courage to weigh myself today and I am up about 2 lbs. since before Christmas. So I am getting rid of anything I don't really need to eat. It is funny how things accumulate when you have parties and everyone leaves stuff at your house.

It is 24 deg. here today. I don't know if I'll be going out or not. I stayed in yesterday. I need to bless (clean) the house, etc.

Have a great day everyone! It's Friday! The weekend is almost here. emoticon

Good morning everyone! Having the three little grandchildren last night was so much fun - my DIL confessed that they had never had barbecued ribs, burnt ends, or chicken before - only ham. Why she didn't tell me that BEFORE we carried out our carry out I don't know...
So grandma ended up making a couple of PBJ sandwiches for grumpy kids. But the grownups chowed down. They took half of the leftovers home, so I think we might have only a meal or two left. Whew. Glad that the food part of Christmas is over!!

Hope everyone is having an excellent day on this last weekend before the New Year.

I only have the one boy but I have grandchildren ranging from age 22 to 4, unless I count the step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren, and then the range is 32 to 18 months. My DH brought me lots of joy when he joined the party!!

Happy Day after Christmas!

Today should be easier for me and more relaxing, too. It was lightly snowing outside my window this morning but now it has stopped and the sun is out.

I also need to bless the house and slowly get things straightened out.

About kids...my 8 kids are 12 years apart. Just thought I'd throw that out there. LOL This includes one set of twins. They are all grown up now and have families of their own.

Have a good one! emoticon

Huh. My kids are 10 years apart too. :) Now that they are 18/28 they can just hang out together, but that video game dynamic has worked for them through growing up. (And I think it's still the easiest way for them to spend time together.)

Good morning everyone. We had a wonderful Christmas with just the 4 of us.
I ended up writing my daughter's book for about 4 hours after the kids wound down from playing WII. there is 10 years between them (24 & 14) so the only time they really connect is over the holidays when they play video games together.

We had a white Christmas, and are getting more of it today.

My daughter and I plan to go to my mothers today, but I need to check on the snowfall first.

Have a bright wonderful day.

DH and I had a lovely, quiet Christmas. Today we get to do it all over again with the grandkids! The good news - no traditional holiday meal for us! We're having carry in barbecue and will send any leftovers home with the kids.

Welcome back IGNITEME101 and Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas to all. We have both a white Christmas to start and mild weather to melt the snow later today. Finally, some sunshine!

I dreamed a horror story last night - no, not a nightmare in the true sense but a story. Hmmm... Looks like my unconscious mind is getting ready for retirement and new writing paths...

Have a wonderful day all!

Right now I can see some blue sky between the clouds, but we're supposed to have a snowstorm move in after 4p.

Sounds like everyone has their elves in row for Christmas. Me, I've got to get off SP and vacuum. (My beloved hates the sound of a vacuum, yet my dog continues to shed as if his intention is to go completely bald.)

The good news is that I just realized the kind of vacuuming I do will count as a fine workout. And I'll do better for fitness if I actually get to the tub scrubbing.

I think I'm going to make a Christmas tree out of yarn ... if I can find something green in my stash :)

Merry Christmas, Everyone!

Good Morning everyone,
I already have the kielbasa cooking and will soon make the seafood chowder.

I don't have too much else to do but the usual. Dinner will be at around 6pm or so. And then the presents. We do our celebrating on Christmas Eve. (Polish custom)

Congrats on your white Christmas in Kansas, Stacy. Our snow is still there but melting a little since the sun is in and out.Yummy! I haven't had fondue in ages but I love it.

Happy Christmas Eve to the rest of the Team. I hope you all have a blessed and happy day.

Good morning all! We are having a white Christmas here in Kansas, with snow flurries on and off yesterday and today. And it's cold!

Here's hoping everyone gets to enjoy this wonderful break in the action. I'm walking a lot today to make up for the traditional fondue we'll have for Christmas Eve dinner.

Hello Team,
Today was a good day. I got almost everything done that I wanted to do. I made 5 loaves of Polish break and 2 poppy seed rolls. My grandson came over in the afternoon and we had a nice chat for about 2 hours. So the seafood chowder will have to be made tomorrow. We are not having dinner till 6 PM or so tomorrow so there will be plenty of time.

VERO_DEN it is so hard at Christmas to be good when there are so many things we only have once a year.

Stacy enjoy your Christmas dinner with your DH.

FFITASMIN83 welcome to the group.

At work this morning despite the weather - although most of the main roads were cleared. Trying to plan a "moderate" Christmas dinner for me and my DH. We're going solo this year and glad of it!!

The holiday dinners with the kids will come later - we've promised them bison burgers!

Have a wonderful week all!

Good Morning all!
Stacy it sounds like you have the same weather that we have. It is wickedly wild weatherwise here too. It was 41 about an hour ago and now it is 59 deg. with rain and lots of wind.

I think I'm becoming a step addict. I I will do just about anything to get those 6,000 steps in every day even if I have to walk till midnight. The Spark Acticity Tracker has really made a difference that way. I used to be haphazard about my exercise, but now I MUST do it every day so I can see those numbers go up on my page.

I don't know what I will do today as now I'm behind on my plans...Try to catch up, I suppose. I was going to make my special Christmas bread this morning but forgot that I needed milk for it so I will need to get to the grocery store first and I'll probably make it this evening.

Ice and snow, cold and wind. How does that old rubric go? It was a dark and stormy night? That would describe Kansas today.

Dottee - I've usually been amazed by the results of letters to manufacturers. Not always, but most have bent over backward to make it right!

Have a wonderful Sunday all!

Hello Team,
I had a great day but a very busy one. I almost didn't get my 6,000 steps in but I DID very late in the day!

Stacy I never got to the store to exchange the pjs as first one son and GF came over to visit and then after he left, another son, his wife and their 2 kids came over. Maybe a letter to the PJ's manufacturer is in order. Earlier in the afternoon a woman who wants to do a story on my 213 year old house came over to do an interview and stayed quite a while. I guess tomorrow is another day.

It is very warm here 51 deg. tonight and all the snow has melted away. Boo!

My Christmas Cactus is blooming this year! Finally, after not a single flower last Christmas, it is bursting out in blooms right now! I must have done something right with it.

Good Night everyone! emoticon Sleep well!

Good morning,

We're sitting here in the living room, drinking coffee, and wondering where all the snow ended up. It's certainly not here!!

Marcy - writing when you have minimal support is very difficult. I hope we can be support for you as you finish this project and move on to the next!

Dottee - Sounds like you are set for a wonderful holiday. Too bad about those PJ's though. Where's the consistency in brands? And is it worth a letter to the manufacturer?

Have a great weekend everyone!!

Hi Folks,
I just read all the posts on here and Jane I agree with Renae and Stacy. You DO have to read a lot in the genre you want to write in. I actually write middle-grade historical fiction but it can also be of interest to all ages. My books are a little like Little House on the Prairie Books. I started with a character and a setting (Erie Canal), then picked a year (1840) and then did a ton or research on life at that time on a canal boat before I started writing. Then I came up with some more interesting characters and fleshed them out. Then I came up with a story line and since it was for middle readers, I made sure there was a lot of adventure in it and humor and family life. I was a teacher before I retired so I was familiar with children of that age so it was easy to get into their skin and write.

Marcy here is a suggestion. Maybe you could set up a reward system for yourself. Something like if you write X number of pages in your daughter's book, you get to write write that many pages in your book. I think you don't want to write your daughter's book because it is preventing you from writing the other book that you're itching to get to. (Now that is just my opinion.)

I have all gifts bought and wrapped. Just have some food to get and some baking to do over the weekend.I was shopping all afternoon. I went to the Polish store and bought kielbasa, Polish Cheesecake, horn rolls, rye bread, kapusta, and some other favorite delicacies that I like but only buy at Christmas and Easter. I also picked up 2 more gifts and bought myself a pair of PJs but when I got home and tried them on they did not fit like the other 2 pairs I bought there earlier in the week even though they were the same kind and brand. So now I have to take them back and exchange them. Oh well.

Good Night emoticon

Yes the YA novel is something my daughter wanted me to write. I normally write romance. She was too young to read what I wrote when I first published. She loves to read and felt left out because I told her she could not read my novel. So she read it on my kindle. Technically she didn't read the "book".

I'm sure that is part of the problem because I have the next book in the romance series all mapped out, but I promised her that I would finish her book this year. I think another problem with is that she was 12 when I started it, now she is 14, and a totally different person, and I'm still writing it as if she were 12 because the age is pivotal to the story.

A third problem is that my husband thinks that I am wasting my time writing, and is not very supportive at all. He rolls his eyes when ever anyone asks about my writing, stuff like that. So to him, me doing a YA book for our daughter is just a huge waste of time.

I don't think it is a waste of time, and I love the book and the characters, I just don't want to do it, and I feel awful about that fact.

So I got more sewing done today - table runner for my best friend, and I wrapped all the Christmas presents I had on hand, so now I just have to wait for UPS to deliver for packages.

Have a wonderful weekend everyone. - We are expecting rain and ice, so it is a good time to either write or sew.

Renae - that's a wonderful idea. Please start that thread.

And I agree with you - if you can't read it - and lots of it - you can't write it!!

Jane,

I agree with MadeIt3 100%. Writing a novel is very hard work and it takes so much longer than you think it will. Once you finished the final revisions (as if there is such a thing) you'll have spent hundreds of hours with it. You must write what you read and what you love. There's no good or bad genre ... just the one(s) that resonate with you.

A good piece of advice I once read: When you're deciding what you will write (or getting ready to plunge into a genre for the first time) read 100 books from within that genre. (Some of those 100 books can be how-to style publications, but no more than about 10%.) For me, a horror author, that meant a few general creativity books, a few nuts and bolts books about things like point of view, pacing, structure, etc, the classics from within my genre (like King, Bradbury, McCammon, Mattheson, Poe, etc.) and the rest recently published horror novels.

Books that you already know like the back of your hand count ... just review them if needed.

It sound like a lot, but you can be working on creative writing in shorter forms while you get your baseline established. Also, you can start a blog, which will give you a writing practice and start building your writer's platform.

I think I'll start a thread for folks to recommend their favorite writing craft books. (If there isn't one already.)

Jane - I'll leave the answer to your question to Dottee and others who actually write fiction. The one thing I know is that if you want to write YA, you need to read YA - or any other genre for that matter.

I knew I was going to land in the non-fiction camp when the only things I read came from research journals ...

This thread is very interesting to me since I'm an aspiring writer. I have done a lot of writing for my job and even had an adult study guide in print. (Mommy's first ISBN!) But now that I'm retiring in eleven days (but who's counting?) I'm hoping to do some creative writing and hopefully a novel. I've thought about YA fiction as well.

Please tell me how you go about developing the plot line? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Jane

Good Morning,
Well, the scale is still in my good graces. emoticon

Stacy we have rain but very warm for us...44 deg. It is supposed to be warm for the next 3 days. Good News! That means I'll be able to get around easily to get the rest of my Christmas preps done...a few more gifts to pick up today, library, bank, Polish food store, etc, Should be able to easily get all this done today. But I worry about the snow. It may be all gone before Christmas. I'm glad your eye is better today. There is nothing more annoying than a sore eye.

It's the end of the week! Celebrate! Enjoy your Friday everyone. emoticon
