Thanks for asking this question - I've noticed over the past two weeks that I've been tracking that unless I go out to eat, it can be hard for me to meet my minimum goal for calories - it's great to know why that's important and to have some suggestions for upping my count on days when I need to!
I have a hard time meeting my carb range, too, actually - maybe it's because I spent a couple of years in the South Beach/Atkins mentality, but don't focus on getting carbs that much - hoping that's not a bad thing.

Thank you! I like the idea of the protien drinks, since I have trouble meeting those goals too!

I am a chronic under eater. At 6'4" 230lbs I am supposed to eat 2000 calories at minimum. 2000 is my high number almost every day.

There are several highly scientific reasons and explanations as to why we have a minimum requirement. I will forego for this response, if anyone wants those, e-mail me and I will let you know.

Our bodies have a base minimum was need daily to stay alive. This number is our perfect balance. If we are at out ideal weight, that number would be our hard goal every day. However most of us are trying to lose FAT. Remember I said fat, not weight.

When we under eat our bodies do two things.
1. It goes into starvation mode. This means our metabolic rates drop, lowering muscle production, organ and cellular repair rates. This includes hair loss, skin tone, etc... Lots of things that are generally the opposite of what we are trying to accomplish.
2. You will lose weight!! The bad news is that it will not be fat. If you under eat your body will actually focus on storing fat, because it things you will need it. Your body thinks it is starving, so whenever you eat, it stores it as fat. What your body then does is cannibalize your muscles, your organs, even your heart!!

So take it from a chronic underwater. STOP IT!!!

Here are some calorie concentrated snacks to use if you see yourself on the low end everyday

1. Nuts. Solid protien and fat. All healthy, but VERY dense. One small handful is a serving, so take it easy on them.
2. Fiber bars. They range from 1 to 2 hundred calories and delicious. Try to get ones with protien in them as well.
3. Smoothie drinks with whey protien powder! Mine range around 300 calories with almost NO fat.

Remember our bodies thrive in a delicate balance. Sparkpeople helps us find and keep that delicate thing in check. Use the trackers and trust in the calculations. I can tell you underrating is just as bad as over eating when it comes to losing weight.

From what I have learned after many, many years of yo-yo dieting the answer is two-fold. First, if you don't eat enough calories and get the correct balanced nutrition, you could be burning muscle instead of fat, which can result in a weight loss initially, but will be difficult to sustain. Also, you don't want to lose weight too quickly as this is a lifestyle change and losing weight slowly over time is the best way to go for long-term maintenance

However, I am no nutritionist. I would think the Diet and Nutrition message board might have someone with more complete answers. Those boards are monitored by the staff.

Good Luck!

Not sure...I am on the other end of the spectrum but I would think need to make sure you are getting all of your nutrition. Listen to your body...

Hopefully someone who has been here longer can help.

I am having a hard time reaching my calories goal, and I know that my body needs a certain number to function, but I am having a hard time understanding something...Why do I need to eat 1200 calories if I am working out to just burn them off? I am not trying to be a smart@ss I just can't wrap my head around it!

Is working out more for your muscle develpment? I just always hear calories in calories out and thought, why not cut calories? Thanks for your help!!
