I've gotten one every year I could (other than that year there was a shortage) since I had a horrible bout with the flu in 1999. I have never gotten the flu when I've gotten the shot. Bubs just turned 6mo and he'll be getting flu shot next week in place of one of his other immunizations. Since there is influenza type "A" and "B" you can get the flu 2x if you are extra unlucky.

As a side note to this discussion, I also just got the adult Tdap booster that my pediatrician recommended as the whooping cough immunization doesn't have full strength till bubs is 2yrs old.

We didn't get flu shots last year. DS#1 got the flu and I had similar symptoms but tested negative. My midwife ended up prescribing Tamilflu anyway bc I was getting worse and it was during a winter storm. The last thing they want is to have a pregant woman hospitalized for the flu in the middle of icy conditions.

Last Friday they were doing flu shots here at work so I got it. I told my DH I thought we should all (him and our 2 sons) get it since Isabella can't have one yet. She is in daycare and it is scary how easily if one baby is sick they can all get sick but it is also part of life.

Thanks for weighing in everybody. I think at least for the next couple years, I'll stop being stubborn and just get a shot already. If Jonas has to get all those shots, it's only fair that I suffer through one if it helps him out. And then we'll see if the shot actually makes me with the flu or not.

I have changed my mind about the flu shot. My son got H1N1 at 3 months 2 years ago. It was awful.. Our winter that year he was sick all the time because of the toll H1N1 took on him. My husband and I both had gotten the flu shots that year because he couldn't. Our son got the flu from daycare. This year with our new baby we are not sending him to daycare this winter. My mom is watching our boys until he is 6 months. she is getting the flu shot and so are we. After having an infant have the flu i will always get the flu shot. It took him over 3 weeks to get over it. ended up on breathing treatments etc. most of the winter he was on breathing treatments.

I am actually reconsidering my stance on the flu shot. I figure it might be a good time for all of us to get one with Jacob in the house so that we can hopefully keep from spreading the junk to him. So far, it has been a rough start to cold season and the kids have had colds since starting school, pretty much. I am really thinking that it may be a good thing for us to get one for his sake...

Every year my Dr. tried to talk me into getting a flu shot, and every year I would refuse. Last year when I went in to confirm my pregnancy, she just said "So you'll be getting a flu shot today?" LOL, as my Mom was living with us at the time, and was having a chemo, I figured I could no longer fight it.

We'll both be getting the flu shot. I work at a college (so I'm always around germy college students) and G is in daycare. My pediatrician said he'll get the flu shot at his 6 month appointment (which is in October, which is when it's recommended you get a flu shot). But I only started getting flu shots about 2 years ago (last year it was because I was pregnant).

Love,
Hillary

I agree with ALP. We don't get the flu shot. It almost sounds cliche, but the one time I did get the flu shot (after my first was born) I ended up getting the flu.

6 months in order for the baby to get the first inoculation. We don't do the flu shot. Personal preference. If (heaven forbid) one of us were to come down with it, I would treat it homeopathically.

I'm a big believer in the flu shot, for both mom and baby. I'm not sure how old baby has to be to get the vaccine, though. If you're breastfeeding, baby is getting immunity from you, which is all the more reason to be vaccinated.

Are you supposed to get a flu shot when you have a baby? I normally don't because I rarely get sick. But I don't know whether it's a good idea to have one now so the baby doesn't get sick. And does the baby need one? I just saw the doctor Monday and of course didn't think to ask about it until after we left.
