I take out the banana and add basil leaves. Also, I don't add the OJ.
I add Homemade veggie juice
recipes.sparkpeople.com/reci
pe-detail.
asp?recipe=296834

Minutes to Prepare: 5
Minutes to Cook: 5
Number of Servings: 1

Ingredients
up to 2.5 cups spinach leaves
1 medium banana
7 good sized strawberries
up to 3/4 cup orange juice

Directions
Put everything in a blender and blend until no more bits of spinach leaf are whirling around. If you want, you can blend the spinach and orange juice together first to make this faster!

Makes about 2 cups.

I like to freeze this in ice-cube trays and dump it in a 'to go' cup for a quick breakfast on the way to work.

I've had linseed oil before and never knew that it came from flax.
Today I might have a chance to stop in at the Food Co-op. I'll ask about LSA.
I love going in and learning more about food. One of my students will be making and selling bread as a summer project. I will be stopping in to buy fresh yeast too.

linseed is another name for flax seed.
Unless you can buy LSA cheaper than your granola, then I would stick with your delicious granola.
The main difference with the LSA is that it has no added sugar or syrup at all.
Cheers Richard

LSA is an ancient mix, it was probably devised about 35 years ago

In these modern times some people may take exception to sunflower kernels and use coconut instead

we sometimes keep a ground mix of LSA at home
linseed, sunflower and almond
We add this to different foods esp. fruit salad
In some ways it resembles Jackies Granola mix

I buy the ground flaxseed and I keep it in the fridge. I put it on my cereal, salads, and in my smoothies.

both the insides and the outsides of a flax seed have their own benefits.
You get most value by having them ground.
Maybe it may be possible to soak flaxseeds overnight in water then add to a smoothie, the softened grains may break up without separate grinding.
cheers richard

The 23/1 is tough coming straight off carbs, because of the hanger pangs. But doing it naturally, it's really quite easy. I did it about three days after starting IF for weight loss. But again, I have a history of fasting for religious reasons.

I've noticed that it has become even easier without the high carb foods. =)

Recently I came across some information about keeping flax seeds whole in smoothies, to assist in cleaning out our intestines and colon. Years ago I had read to grind them for absorption. But now I think I will do both.

have you heard of this?

Wow! the 23/1 is a very tough program. My program of about 16/8 works for me. I find that the green smoothies help with the fasting. I get my nutrients and am able to continue the program.
Eating out is another area where I try to eat well, but usually, end up with some flatulence because of the way the delicious food is prepared.

It really depends on whether I'm fasting for religious reasons or for body cleansing.

On average, I naturally do a 23/1 fast once a week. What I mean by that is, I listen to the true hungers of my body and once a week it will fall on that schedule. An average day is 18/6 or a 20/4.

But this week, since I ate out at restaurants and my body was quite angry with me, I will eat lightly, veggies/veggie smoothies, warm lemon water. I will probably have a baked fish today. Nothing too heavy on my stomach. I'm not sure how long it will take. Last night I was craving spaghetti, then I remembered I'm not eating pasta. (I replace it with zucchini), but it's actually the ground beef I'm craving, not the pasta, but I take my craving as a good sign; it shouldn't take long for my body to get back to a good place. emoticon

I threw frozen cranberries, celery and cauliflower in with my usual banana, blueberries, apple and spinach. 360 calories, 193 mg sodium (my mortal enemy!) 1871 mg of potassium, 1 gram of fat and 23 grams of fiber. a little tart, but not too bad tasting at all.

My go to green smoothie is:
1-2 cups kale
1-2 cups spinach
1 banana
1 tbs chia seeds
water, (I don't measure how much, but I'd guess about 1 cup)
Then I nutribullet this)

I buy kale and spinach fresh and keep it in the freezer.
This is super quick and easy and delicious.
berries can easily replace the banana

may have stumbled upon a quick gingerbeer recipe.
have been playing around with fermenting 1 tablespoon of sugar in a 4/5th's ful 1.25 litre lemonade bottle with the lid closed, then topping up with diet cordial when strongly fizzy.
next step add the yeast, some ginger, lemon juice, sugar and water to the bottle.
then drink when fizzy.

will post this in the kombucha fermentation team too.

4-10 ice cubes

Directions
Combine all ingredients in blender, and blend until desired consistency is achieved.

All of the ingredients can be substituted with different brands and types of the product. Any flavor of yogurt, any flavor of juice etc. I just made my listings brand specific in order to create accurate nutritional values.

Just keep in mind that changing things up may change the serving and nutrition information.

Enjoy!

tinned tomatos are canned tomatoes

the expression is a throwback to tinned cans

What is a tinned tomato? Are you referring to canned tomatoes??
I have used tomatoes in my smoothies during the summer when we have a lot of extra produce. I don't usually buy tomatoes for my juices or smoothies.
I love fresh tomato juice in the summer!

kimchi is just fermented vegetables, similar in the same way of producing sauerkraut.
because it may be a bit acid and salty
i would probably use in a tomato(tinned tomatos) smoothie.
have not done this as yet.
do intend to make tomato-based smoothies whenever i can.
cheers

I have not created my own coconut juice.
I bet it isn't too hard. I don't buy whole coconuts very often

i make my own veggie juice to go into my smoothies. I add other veggies like spinach and kale. Then I add some berries that I have in my freezer. Most of the time I add Kefir. It doesn't taste great on its own, but in a smoothie, it's very good.

carrots only contain reasonable carbohydrate and are choco-block full of carotene and valuable fibre.
they are a great natural sweetener
during the war people used to make carrot jam when food was rationed
We have some here(a bought1)
it is very good
Cheers

Thanks Richard. I never thought of white flour in that way. Also, I put carrots in my juices and salads every day. At least I have a healthier sweet tooth.

similarly
white flour can be considered to be a sugar equivalent, but slower digested

I like to think of a mental imagery when consuming starchy things
eg would I eat the same weight of sugar as 1 slice of bread would weigh.

This type of thinking gets tempered down if consuming wholegrains and starchy things like peas, carrots, pumpkin, potato, sweet potato etc.
with this latter group there is an element of fibre which leads to a slower release of sugar into the blood-stream
from this group also potato would have the quickest breakdown, whereas sweet potato is slower, has more fibre and valuable carotenoids.
Cheers Richard

I agree. Fructose can be as bad as sucrose to a person with diabetes

the avoidance of simple sugars can only do good

thats why we usually have a vege-based smoothie rather than fruit
