Every day more of this story emerges. Her publicist quit in December. The Deens are on a Paula-themed cruise right now, and they are not responding to inquiries. I hope they have a good time because their post cruise lives are going to be different. On the other hand, since Paula is going to earn $6 million over 2 years for the endorsement on top of her brand earnings, she can afford to do whatever she wants. www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/01/24/pa

I am glad she is getting all of this attention and criticism. Maybe it will make a few of her fans reassess their diets and lifestyles.

PATTK1220 emoticon share! Wow she didn't even tell TV Food Network. It is going to be interesting to see if they renew her contract.

Poor thing she feels bad none of her fellow chefs rallied to her defense. No I don't think they want to commit career suicide. Hopefully this public backlash and this lack of support from her Chef friends wakes her ass up and she does some good with her diagnosis and teaches America the proper way to eat.

Excellent commentary by Dr. Mark Hyman. I read his book Ultra Metabolism and really liked it. His plan is similar to Eat to Live but not as strict.

Thanks for the links Patti!

Diabetes is caused by animal fat surrounding cells and the glucose cannot enter and feed the cells. That's the simplified and non-tech answer from me. I'm going to listen to this again and take notes. I was too goobered up just being able to ask him a question. LOL

This is what is happening to me but also with my muscles. I have a very high percentage of body fat and if I try to lose it fast I am in big trouble because the only and best way to reduce it is through exercise. So, again, nice and easy is the name of the game. I've got a long way to go before my fat% is normal and I'm never going back to eating animal protein/fat/toxic waste again!

You have to ask?? LOL Duh! I've been getting their 21 day kickstart for about what 14 days I think. I don't have time to read it all but I have it stored on my computer. Good stuff!

Hey Yvonne, I'm calling up for a Q & A with Dr. Cousins on RAWpalooza in 10 minutes. Do you have any questions for me to ask him? I'm asking about the McDougal plans suggestion on eating a starch-based plant diet.

Oh my, Terry I didn't take any offense to your post what so ever. Let's hope that since we are eating correctly and drinking the Green Smoothies that we will never have to make that decision.I know that is why I am eating Raw. I look at it that we are preventing ourselves from getting Cancer.

" She tried Raw but didn't want to do that after 3 days and she chose the chemo route. Thankfully she is a Survivor."

Yvonne, thank you for that reality check, too. I really shouldn't talk in such "I-will-never" terms about chemo, because one never really knows what one will do when faced with cancer (especially if raw food or juiceing did not seem to be helping). As one wise friend once told me, "Never say never!"

I'm truly glad your sister survived and is doing okay! I should mention that my own mother had breast cancer, used radiation, and is a survivor, also. So I really shouldn't speak in such black and white terms about treatment.

But still, I "strongly suspect" that I'd never have chemo myself (and hope I never have to find out). I guess I need to allow for both schools of thought and not condemn the medical community like I sometimes do. Still, even famous doctors like Dr. Laurainne Day do condemn modern medical practices in treating cancer...so it gets a bit confusing to know exactly "how" one should make a stand. I know that Kriss Carr (Crazy, Sexy Cancer lady) embraces both forms of treatment.

Anyway, just wanted to say I'm sorry I was so strict in my post about my beliefs, especially since your own sister was saved through todays medical treatments!

"GentleViking... Umph, Umph, Umph (in my best Tim the Toolman Taylor voice). I am sure you know how hard it can be to talk to men about healthy living, especially when you talk vegetarian or vegan"

I used to love watching Tim the Toolman! Ha! But please don't feel odd about talking about health here, cause we all are in it for that. My goals are to lose weight and hopefully also avoid cancer myself with lots of anti-oxident foods, like green smoothies.

I think it's hard for us guys to change old habits, but it can be done. I'm not sure what route you are planning on taking (vegetarian, vegan or raw), but the guy who influenced me to become vegan was Rip Essylstein (He's a firefighter who wrote a book called "The Engine 2 Diet".) I figured if a macho guy like that could become a vegan and look so fit, then what was I scared of (the fact that my cholesterol was through the roof also helped me decide!)

Sounds like you've got a great plan there with starting your family on a healthy plan! Way to go!

GentleViking... Umph, Umph, Umph (in my best Tim the Toolman Taylor voice). I am sure you know how hard it can be to talk to men about healthy living, especially when you talk vegetarian or vegan.

And of course the Princesses, Queens, and Female Royal Court in general of this team, thank you for the warm welcome.

I too was a student of the Paula Deen school, and thought I was gonna eat that way and somehow manage to have a healthy life. I watched her show, and made lots of her recipes. I think back now to the damage that I was doing to my kids. Damage that I will undo by teaching and leading by example. It is awfully sad when you see money make the decisions for people instead of doing the right thing. But with the FDA and every other agency that is supposed to be looking out for the American people's well being, as far as our food protection, who can blame ole Paula for following their lead? Who doesn't want to be rich at their only bodies expense? I think I can name a few people who wouldn't, and those are the people that I like. (This team)

I plan on starting my juicing next week while I'm on vacation and at the same time, starting the kids off with green smoothies before school. As I feast on juice, my wife who is starting the PINK method (if your'e familiar) will get more accustomed to smoothie drinking. She isn't what you would call a healthy eater, but she wants to be, and she'll do fine.

Hi Mr. Freeze! Great to see another guy on the group!

Just so you know, I lost my younger brother three years ago to cancer, too, so I know a little bit of how you feel. Your loss has been far greater in family members, so please know I feel great compassion for you and yours.

I also came to the conclusion that I'd never do chemo or radiation if I ever got cancer, after seeing how my brother suffered with it. He did chemo for almost a year and half and during that time he was the most sick I'd ever seen him in my life. I truly believe it was poisoning him, and it was a slow death.

During that time he was listening to the dvd's of Dr. Laurainne Day and so often I've wished he had gone 100 percent with what she recommended. Dr. Days testimoney is a very important one, because she was a well known surgeon at a Los Angelas hospital (she was once on the news show "20/20", for her stand on better emergency room procedures!) She came down with cancer and refused treatment, because she had seen for herself what chemo and radiation does to a person. She used juicing and a 10 step program she created and low and behold, she slowly but gradually got well! No more cancer!

So her testimoney is very, very important and I wish it were getting out there more! She's a bit odd in some of her social ideas that she posts on her website, but her juicing and food ideas are important to take note of.

I'm not sure her type of treatment works for everyone, but I also know that chemotherapy is not working anywhere near as well as they try to make it sound like it is.

(I should mention that I'm not a 100 percent raw person. I'm a vegan, but am trying to make raw green smoothies and salads a part of my daily routine. The ladies here are helping encouraging me with that and have been great!)

Anyway, sorry I got up on my soapbox! I'm just happy to see another guy here who also understands what I've been through! I hope we all can support you. The ladies here are real powerhouses of knowledge about so many things and they've been a great help to me. I know they will be for you as well, and I hope I can be also.

Welcome!

Same here hon. The animal fat that is in my system is causing to be less active than I'd like to be or suffer the consequences. Greens and living food is taking care of this problem but it is slowly doing so. Nice and easy wins the race.

exactly...true change is hard, but if a person truly wants it they can get it! Sorry to say that like myself it took a real eye opener before I "got it". For some it will be to late or worse even when faced with severe illness will pick disease and phood over life through alive food. I can not believe how I allowed phood to almost kill me...my life vs phood!!!!!

I have taken off my kid gloves as of yesterday. If people cannot handle the message of health i have no control over them being controlled by the chemicals and drugs being fed to them by commercial produce and meat eating.

Thanks Karen, there is no book in my near future...maybe a movie LOL!! NOT!
I love that I have been given an opportunity to be selfish on these pages and build with in me affirmation of what I need to do, to survive and live. My passion lies with in me wanting to live a long healthy life and especially doing this for my family, so they never have to suffer with health issues. Starting a circle that will grow through all of our walks. Building my strength to defeat the ones who continue to try and pull me away from what is saving my life. Society.
To share through these selfish things is just part of the journey.
You need to write the book, make the cds and dvds, go on tour and spread the word and help as many as you can reach. You could be the spokewoman for the words shared here. You are the Rawky :-))

MFTAGGFREEZE: I get goosebumps everytime anyone joins the healthy eating path. Congratulations!! We are here to assist and applaud your efforts. I did juicing many years ago to the extreme and I lost a great amount of weight. I did not get on the road to true health until I started doing green smoothies just recently. Juicing is a fantastic start and I am happy that you are choosing to start that way. PLEASE use organic!

Erin, I'm certain you could write a book and it would be on my shelf in a heart-beat. You are filled with passion and personal experience which beats text book knowledge 100 to 1.

...well I am upset, I have not been getting my mails/team shares and had to go through hoops yesterday to even get on to SP. It was so slow and would freeze up. All other programs ran smoothly. I spent a great of time yesterday working with SP to try and resolve this issue. So I got so far behind :(
Welcome MFTAGGFREEZE. The best thing you can do is incorporating green smoothies in you and your families regular lifestyle.
Paula is the way I grew up and also cooked until 2007 then I looked at some changes but always "diets" not life style. I did eat amazing salads though...hmm you would think I would have listened to what my body wanted more, instead of convenience or the "norm".
Terry I prefer Princess as I am still out in the courtyard playing and fighting maturity. LOL
I know a few friends that are determined to live on a low carb high fat, meat and dairy diets, consuming less than 20 carbs a day to fight their diabetes! OMLORD I use to be there. Killing myself, literally with overloading my liver with the excess of toxins and fats. Dead, processed and pumped chemically based dairy and meats, sometimes not even eating anything with color that was alive.
My 3 siblings, father and my deceased mother are walking pharmacies, extremely obese and sick and dying. The only difference in me was, I was active and saw the light...literally.
Synthetic medicine to treat what we can threat and cure with foods that are alive, living and consumed in their natural forms is so wrong. Oh how we are destroying our human race, our children and babies as well...how awful that we are sentencing our children to death without a fighting chance. Paula has in her power to become a role model for so many with her popularity and position, only if she saw her power.
To live with your choices promoted by death answers is insane. To have an addiction to money, food and anything life destructive is death...I choose life!

Walk through your journey with a loving open heart and as well mind. Treat others as you would like to be treated.
Laugh, if at nothing else yourself.

This is my first time posting on this board, so I'll just start by saying what a great team this is and how informative and structured your posts and topics are.

I have lost a mother, and 3 sisters to cancer. I also lost my mother-in-law to the dreaded disease. I never knew before now of any other treatment other than chemo or radiation, however, seeing my mother go through them both, I knew that if I ever had cancer, I would never do either.

There was some talk once while my mother-in-law (make that my grandmother-in-law), was dying that garlic could help her. True to form of most people, garlics' smell and the preparation of it for her were "too much" and it "wasn't helping". That was my first time hearing of treating a disease with diet, and it was a bad example to say the least.

After some research and a few well written documentaries, I now see the light. I plan on kick starting my new life off with a juice fast/feast (whichever wording you choose) and engage myself and my wife and kids on a healthy drug free life.

Great post!

How do you think I felt back in the early '90's when I went raw vegan the first time? I was ridiculed on a daily basis. Not fun! And that was when there were no green smoothies. Just juicing and raw food.

Wow, you gals have really been talking! Please don't think I didn't want to get involved myself, it's just one of those weird times when Spark People did not send me this particular topic to my email box (anyone else ever have that happen to them? I suspect SP still has some computer bugs to work out!).

Yes, very dissappointing about Paula Deen. I'm a big Paula Deen fan, but for her personality, NOT for her high fat recipes (I'd LOVE to see her in a comedy show, maybe like the one Reba McIntire was in!)

Paula reminds me of women I know in my life, like aunts and cousins, and like Lisa said, most folks (especially in the south where I live) are raised that diabetes is an illness you are born with, kinda in the way we think of asthma being an illness like that, so one wonders if that's not Paula's thinking, too.

But I do hope she will wise up and change (if only for her own health, not to mention all the fans who follow her!)

Yes, you gals are right that most folks are so ignorant (as in not knowing the details) of being vegan or raw. In fact, I was ignorant only just about three years ago about it all. I had "heard" of vegetarians and "heard" of vegans, but I had no idea of what it involved. It was hard to imagine a world without meat eating...how would one do that??? Sounded kinda science fictiony to me! And then there's all that teaching about men needing meat protein for their muscles...so how "could" a man be vegan??? He would shrivel up and look like Don Knotts!!!

I still thank God for Rip Essylstein...I have doubts I would have ever become vegan had I never saw him on TV. But I also just as equally and enthusiastically thank God for the female influences in my life that came before Rip came into the picture. They were Kriss Carr (Crazy, Sexy Cancer) and Dr. Laurainne Day who taught me about the value of raw foods and drinks when it comes to healing the body.

Maybe someday the word will get out about vegan and raw eating. I definitly believe you gals are doing it! Way to go!!!

(By the way, I hope you all don't mind me calling you "gals" now and then...I mean it affectionatly as friends, not in a demeaning way. It's a southern thing, too.)

What is so sad is the Medical establishment says that breast cancer survivors are the lucky ones....lucky ones? They say that for those who live for 5 years after the "cure". That is a crappy way of surviving!

Keep on keeping up the talking to your friend. One of these days soon she may listen and save her life.

My mom is the same way. She has diabetes and she had uterine cancer last year. She spent much of 2010 in the hospital and almost died from sepsis. She lost a lot of weight and I was hoping it would be her second chance. Instead she's gained back most of what she lost and her diet hasn't changed at all. She monitors her blood sugar which she never did before but that's the only change. I try to talk to her about the importance of eating right and even getting a little exercise but I don't get through to her. I am not going to change her and I am not going to spend the time she has left fighting with her. I love her and I will enjoy the time she has left and respect her right to make her own decisions.

I just went through a Breast Cancer scare with my best friend. Thank God it was just messed up blood test results that produced the scare. They redid her blood work to get a 2nd read to make sure her markers were up and thankfully they were not. She is a one year Breast Cancer Survivor and she thought it was back.

I tried talking to her about the Raw Food Diet yet again but she did not want to listen. The scare was over and she is perfectly happy with her high meat consumption diet. She also has arthritis and complains of the pain constantly. I told her that animal protein creates a lot of inflammation in the body and if she would just make one change by eliminating it from her diet she would feel so much better. Nope she would rather pop a Celebrex than give up her steak.

I think the best way to make a difference is by being a good example. Eating healthy, raw or vegan, in front of people and letting them see the results for themselves. People have already noticed my weight loss and ask me how I did it. I tell them by eating healthy. Eating a lot of fruits and veggies. No one has asked me since I have decided to eat vegan, high raw. If they ask in the future, I will add that part. I have found that you can't argue with people who's ears are closed. They are not ready yet. When they are, I will be there to help and support them.

Lisa, I don't doubt it one bit. YOU can make a difference in your circles. YOU can open up to others in a way that is not offensive nor condemning to their lifestyle. YOU may just be the catalyst to spark their journey into being a vegan. Notice I didn't say raw vegan.

Every person has the power to make a difference and change the course of what is going on in the world for the better.

Karen: The raw food movement has been ignited but there are many people who still have NO idea. In my social circle it is still thought of as crazy. People do seem to be recognizing the value of fruits and veggies but many so nothing wrong with the standard American diet. As I have mentioned, I am an educated person and I have a degree in Biochemistry and I had NO idea about raw or it's benefits until maybe 6 months ago. I have had people tell me that not eating meat makes a person not human. They think being vegetarian, never mind vegan, is ridiculous. I don't argue with them. I feel bad for them and wish that one day they will find out the truths that I have learned. A LOT of people are ignorant.

There is virtually NO disease that cannot be reversed, cured, or greatly deminished by changing your diet and getting off phakephood and animal products. Note I didn't say anything about exercising yourself to death. Exercise is great but doesn't reverse cancer, heart disease, diabetes, obesity, etc., etc., etc.

There is a genetic component, no doubt, but from what I have been reading lately a raw food diet or even the Eat To Live diet can, and have, cured many cases. Eat To Live includes cooked foods but focuses on plant based nutrition. Being even a little overweight can also be a HUGE factor depending on your genetic makeup. Some people can be more overweight with fewer consequences than others. I think the public deserves to know that a cure exists. Eating well is a lot harder than popping a pill but people should have a choice. Right now, most people believe diabetes is incurable and that is just not true.

You gals are on fire tonight!

Lisa the raw food movement has been ignighted and it is fantastic! I truly feel that Paula Deen has more information on this disease than her handlers allow her to share. That is the shame I see.

Perhaps she will one day say the hell with them and do what is right not only for herself but for all the people that follow her. We can at least hope.

Well, Diabetes IS inherited but it is also by what we eat and exercise. I am 'pre diabetic' and I have been for a while. My Grandmother died from it; I am short and 'pleasantly fluffy'. It runs in my family. emoticon So your mom is right too.

It was very disappointing to hear what little I did about Paula. With her brand, she really had an opportunity to share her story in a positive light and help so many people with diabetes learn how to cook healthier without sacrificing the flavors they love. Waiting 3 years to announce her disease at the same time as the rollout of a big pharma partnership that has obviously been in the works for a very long time was, well - disappointing is the kindest word I can come up with.

I checked out the website. Paula's sons are doing special presentations once a month - Portland and Chicago are the two cities I remember. You have to put in a lot of info to get to the recipes and the program - the meds you or a family member currently take, how long you've had the disease, etc. I figured I wouldn't get past the gate since I don't have diabetes and have no family history of it. In the end, Paula Deen probably hasn't damaged her brand because most people are like Yvonne's pool mates. (Insert picture of ostrich with head stuck in sand here - and apologies to ostriches everywhere for that stereotypic image!)

I don't know what her obligation is. She has a cooking show and it's popular. Give the people what they want I guess. It appears that she eats the food she makes so she's not a hypocrite who makes junk but at home eats healthy. I have only seen her a few times but I have always gotten the impression that she doesn't think there's anything wrong with the food she cooks. There are many people, my mom included, who believe diabetes is inherited and has nothing to do with what you eat. Once you get it you need to modify your diet but you have no control over getting it is the theory. Up until a few months ago when I found out about raw food I thought there was no cure and that medicine was necessary. I am a well educated person but what is known in the raw community (and other small health communities) is not common public knowledge. She may be ignorant. She is obviously obese so people watching her show already have a idea of what her cooking leads to.

There are so many chefs out there who have changed their style of cooking due to their own illnesss or family members who have illnesses or just because it is the healthy thing to do. What is up with her!!

And yes, I have heard of her sandwich. Sounds like she was either making fun of herself or thumbing her nose at someone. Yuck!

Good for you Yvonne!

I feel sad for Paula Dean. She is facing a very serious disease and likely a lot of misery. Like most Americans she may really believe there is no cure for diabetes and medicine is the only way to treat it. I hope that she finds enlightenment and then uses her platform to spread the word to others.

That said, I also hope her empire crumbles because it is only harming people. Including herself.

AND did you all see the 'sandwich' she made with crispy cream donuts and inbetween she added hamburger with bacon? OMG! What is she thinking? I think she has an obligation to her viewers!

I also thought to myself what is up when her son came out with a new TV show with lightened recipes. It was an about face to everything they always made in the past. Now I know what facilitated this move. It just pisses me off...

OMG that was the topic of discussion as we worked out in the pool this morning. A very heated discussion. Most of the ladies still love Paula and came quickly to her defense that it was no one else's business. I made a statement that I hoped her "empire" fell apart with this backlash. Oooooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhh did they get mad at me. My answer was how dare she as a food icon, beloved chef who everyone tried to emulate knowingly have diabetes for 3 years and she still peddled her high butter and sugar consumption and pass it off as good food. She was a role model to a lot of people in her own industry and to her tv viewers and it was her obligation with all of them to be honest. Oh I am getting mad just rehashing this so I am going to stop here. emoticon

She's afraid that she will rock too many boats. Fear makes people do silly things.

OMG! I totally agree. What a blessing this would have been to people with diabetes!
What on earth is she thinking?

When I first heard the news about her diabetes, I was thinking, "Wow, this could be a great opportunity to lighten up her recipes and teach folks a better way of cooking." But then I found out the details and was extremely disappointed. Yep, greed is the number one killer in America. That's too bad. This could have been such a wake-up call. So many folks follow her cooking shows. Imagine if she changed all her recipes to incorporate healthier ingredients. She could have had a great impact on the health of thousands of Southerners and more. Sad.

Many of you probably know by now that Paula Dean - the Queen of Butter has Type 2 diabetes and has known about this for 3 years. Meanwhile she has been peddling her high-fat lifestyle and pretending to her hundreds of thousands of viewers that everything is A O.K.!

So why did she all of a sudden decide to come clean? Because the maker of her drug of choice to take for her condition is funding her doing so.

Here's the full blog from the man who heads up RAWFOR30DAYS.com. I admire him for doing this blog. I do not admire Paula Dean. Decide for yourself.
