Fill your blender with at least 1/2 water. Then add bananas. Please note: that's plural. Make sure they are ripe with little brown freckles. Then more fruit, then greens.

Your smoothie should taste like a fruit smoothie. It should be so yummy you can't put it down. If you don't have a Vitamix or big blender, just keep pouring it into a big container and make more smoothie.

Do not add dairy products.

With kids I always play up the creepy qualities. They always seem to think it's a lot of fun if they can say "ooooo gross" and then drink what tastes like a fruit smoothie. But dark fruit is a great idea too.

I am still getting along with my Professional grade Kitchenaid blender and today there seems to be an awful lot of pump sinking to the bottom of my drink. I have had to go cow's milk free, soy free, gluten, free and egg free and I think that yogurt or milk would have helped thicken it up so the baby kale wouldn't sit on the bottom.

I was excited to find baby kale and find that the flavor is easier to drink but the sinkers make me wish I could add yogurt to give my green smoothie a little more "body."

I read below regarding adding a banana to create a creamy base and added it to my second half of today's smoothie. It helped but the main problem is that I probably got a bit carried away with the baby kale...

I agree, I've done the same thing, added more water and reblended. The problem with my blender is that it didn't matter, I still had the same thickness in my smoothie. One time, I strained all the stuff out, but the smoothie didn't taste like anything. I saw in a few recipes though, where they used the pulp for chips and cookies and things....interesting.

Add more water. Drink your smoothie first thing and don't eat anything else until you've drank the whole thing.

I've just started with the green smoothies and can't drink that much only about a glass, so I have left-overs and find these get pretty thick! So the next day, I add some fruit and more water and reblend. Any other ideas? Maybe I just don't add enough water to begin with???

That is awesome! My kids won't drink smoothies that are green-colored yet. When I fix them they are green to start with, then I put in dark colored fruit to disguise the color and flavor a bit so they will drink them. They are also losing their taste for white sugar - my 15 yo daughter said she had a stomach ache after eating some cookies or other junk because she's not used to it. She much prefers the natural flavors and sugars found in fruits and veggies from a smoothie. Green smoothies are the bomb!

I had a proud mama moment yesterday. My kids were eating dinner and asked if they could have dessert. So I asked if they had a salad, did they eat their veggies. They said "Can't we just have a smoothie". I can't believe they asked for a green smoothie! Yeah!

Yes, I'm looking for to my green smoothies. You know, it is a good way to get rid of a lot of spinach I have in the frig. or apples I got tired of eating, etc. Get the picture? LOL And first thing in the morning it is a pick me up without that blood sugar surge you get from fruit smoothies. Just enough! I love it!!

Thanks, I will check out some videos. My blender is the Ninja and it's very new, so I imagine that I may just not be blending long enough. I try to make it in the morning and that's when my girls are still sleeping, so I feel like I may be waking them up....No worries. As always, Thanks for the tips. I will definately check out the videos.

KIMKO, I just saw a video on how to make smoothies, and they say a smoothie has to have a creamy base to look right. That means using a banana, mango, pear etc. Put the water and banana in and blend. That is a good creamy base, then add in greens or whatever. That should make it so it doesn´t separate. If only greens it will...not that it is bad, but maybe you would like it better as a creamier drink. Does this make sense? If not, telll me and will find that Youtube I saw for you. Good luck. Check out other Youtubes on how to, and you´ll learn tons...that´s how I learn everything (I live in Spain).

Kim what kind of blender are you using? How old is it? Are the blades sharp enough? Are you running it long enough? Look at the youtube videos. Some are about using a blender for making a green smoothie.

Blend it up again. Yes, put water in first and about 1/2 cup for every 2 cups of smoothie.

I have one more question, please. My apologies for so many of them, but I'm a newby trying to get straight on a few things.....Now today, I have made my luscious green smoothie, but the bottom is dark green which looks like mostly the juice, but the top is light green with all kinds of bits and pieces....this has not really happened to me before, would it be best to run this through the blender again until it has all liquified, or would I get the same benefits if I were to just suck it up and drink/chew my smoothie....LOL It looks like the stuff a regular juicing machine would leave behind which is where all the real nutrients are so I would rather not just toss it out. Maybe not enough water in there when I blended it? UGH!

Drink it first. If you still feel hungry eat a side salad without cheese. Cheese is one of the eorst things for our bodies along with dairy.

Gotcha, so is that to say if you drink any less, then you should also supplement with some other veggies or something? I brought only a 16 oz thermos with me for lunch. I was just going to drink that green smoothie and call it lunch, would I be down on nutrients if I do that?

A quart of smoothie is a meal. You dont have to concern yourself with weight loss as it will come off effortlessly with these and eating plant based and clean. This means avoiding processed phake phood. Yes water is essential.

So here's my question. I'm kind of new to the green smoothie....When I am doing my smoothies for the day, do you use this as a meal replacement? Or smoothie with some additional veggies, like a salad or something? Also, do you still fit in your regular water inatake as well? I'm trying to lose weight and don't want to eat too much, but not too little either.

I have a question about switching up the greens. I switch up my greens daily. One day I will have spinach, the next maybe kale, and maybe collards and then maybe spinach. Is this good, or should I be eating the same greens for so many days then switch them up, and after a few days I can go back to the first one? Want to make sure I am doing it right.

Thanks

Kathy

Green smoothies are loaded with nutrients and fiber which are excellent for reducing your cholesterol. Any leafy green or fruit will help manage your cholesterol level. Just have one or two a day as meal replacements and your numbers should be sitting pretty in no time.

emoticon Greetings Smooth People

Thanks for the welcome in my inbox Travelnista,Erin and ummm, I forgot, lol, sorry.Short memory problems at time(old head injury). I joined then some things happened..called LIFE..lol.,and been dealing with things plus going to get busier since my niece and her hubby are going away out of state for a week or 2 and so their 3 daughters and doggies need places to stay so between my parents, sister and myself we will all pitch in and take care of them all..

I do a basic green smoothie which I enjoy and try to avoid fruit smoothies because I know fruit is high in sugar calories so figure why risk it,lol,I do put green apples in my green veggie smoothie so get my fruit there.

I know they say you need your fruit every day but anyway to take it in and not feel guilty that it has natural sugars in it and thus extra calories?

Plus, what smoothie drink is a real cholesterol fighter because my DR says my bad number is high and he wanted me to start on pills but I know those Statins are very bad for the body so I want to lower my cholesterol purely by diet. I eat oatmeal every am without fail. I barely eat meat (just boneless skinless baked chicken breasts)...any ideas more? Thanks

Add a small banana to her portion or some mango, pineapple. or pear. You need to make hers more fruity. You still want the greens in hers so pour everyone's portion and then add a piece of sweet fruit to the remaining amount in the blender and blend it and then give her the sweeter version. As time goes by you should be able to make hers less sweet.

Hope this works out!

Hello Green Smoothie Lovers,

I was wondering if anyone had any ideas of how to get my youngest daughter (10) to enjoy her morning smoothie as much as my other three kids (16,14,13).

Any ideas?

My 16 and 13 year olds love them (both boys), and my 14 year old girl has really taken to them when she saw how much her stamina was improved in track after just a few days, but the little girl just sits there in the morning. Even though I only give her half a glass, it takes her about 30 minutes to drink it.

Help!

Erin, this is an incredible testimony! I am so glad it was such a success. Liver disease is probably one of the single most frightening illnesses that people encounter and there is huge incentive to be as pro active as you are! Keep it up and keep us updated!
I have juiced on and off for awhile but this is the most I've ever done it. I really feel so much better when I do- and I believe it is just as important for me to be consistent with the green smoothies as well. I'm addicted to having healthy bowel movements... LOL!
But I'm fascinated with the juice fasting and would love to do it for at least a week some time soon.

I even learned from those that promote juicing that you need added fiber each day because you can actually get constipated by juicing. That was not something I expected to learn! However, I do like to juice a few items and have a small glass of juice for some added nutrition. I was juicing some when I was at my healthiest so I think a little juice and a lot of green smoothies is the way to go! IMO that is. But if I had to choose one or the other - green smoothies hands down!

The liver damage is irreversible. No cure, but doing raw organic is being kind to my liver and the rest of my system so it is not tasked. Avoiding further damage. I have pretty much stopped the disease from progressing. The ducts are like a drain with build up, I just gave them a nice massage and loosened up some of the slug to flow better. I am hopeful that these life changes will let me lead a long healthy life. The liver is an amazing power horse and it can repair it's self in most cases. But scar tissue can not be healed. I am off all meds and my blood test are doing real well, as are the enzymes....for me, I should add :-)

Erin, do you think your ducts are fixed for now? Did the juice feast help enough to almost cure them? What do you do to not have them all stopped up? Hope they´ll be fixed and soon!

Thanks,
Yvonne, Bile duct obstruction is a blockage in the tubes that carry bile from the liver to the gallbladder and small intestine. My disease my ducts get so damaged they become non functioning. Non functioning ducts destroy liver tissue. To much scarring, the liver stops working and a liver that doesn't work is not good news. There is only one option, transplant.
I was so clean from juicing and so aware of my body, that I could actually tell bile was being produced. The dumping was like a nasty build up. Imagine old bile. Even though nasty, it was a great sign of function and I want function!

Erin I am so happy "the juice fast was a success, as it kicked in liver duct dumping in me". Not quite sure what liver duct dumping is but I know it is something important for you on your journey to a healthier liver. emoticon emoticon

I had been wondering the outcome of your fast, and wonderful to hear your report. Well, that´s it! I am now convinced that green smoothies are the way to go. Your report was full of details on the importance of fiber, and too the easyness of smoothies. Think will go downstairs and fix one right now. So glad all went well for you.

Just coming off a juice fast I want to share this with you all. This is just my personal view for me. So please know this is not suggested for anyone else.
Juicing or green smoothies...GREEN SMOOTHIES!
Why; juicing is good, healthy and is wonderful for your health. BUT, the loss of fiber(pulp) and does not fill me up. I am not satisfied with juice. It sets me up for craving. It is pleasant and very pleasing to drink. I hate throwing away the fiber, you truly can use only so much of the pulp. I think using it is great for burgers, cracker and mock up meat items. But that to me is just processing and what you have to add gets complicated. I like stress free and simple. I am trying to get away from adding, nuts, liquid amino acids and wheat free organic tamari to any foods. I regained 2 pounds the moment I reintroduced chewing foods and smoothies. I was so empty that I knew this may happen, (coffee enemas with juice fast).
Something else I am finding for me. Juicing 100% is costly. Smoothies are a better value.
I now drink less than 6 ounces of pure juice a day, and I am very selective on what it is. I have a real issue with extremely high carbs using fruits, my body reacts and not in a good way.
The juice fast was a success, as it kicked in liver duct dumping in me. The reason I felt and performed not at my best. I will do it again, but not anytime soon.
I would rather be filled at a meal and not left wanting. I am an eater, this is a fact I live with. I enjoy uncooking, chewing and the visual pleasures, taste and happiness my food gives me.
I have came to find pleasure in my food and know this food is healthy for me. I can eat green high raw the rest of my life. I could never do a 30 day fruit fast. Perhaps 3 days ever month.
When I make my juice I make enough for 3-4 days. It is best drank right away. I too will not be strapped to all the mess or time. I also wheatgrass each morning and make smoothies each day for the family as well. That clean up is a breeze. My juicer is a bit more to clean up. I have cut some time putting a plastic bag in the pulp bin. I take the bags off my produce and use them again in the juicer.
My own opinion, my own results and choices. I am very happy with this :-)

My blender is the best I could buy here in Spain, but not the high-tech you guys probably have, but my juicer is a good one. I do see the glories in green smoothies especially after reading what Boutenko said about how they changed her life, not juicing, so maybe the best is to do a little of each as it goes.

Thanx Yvonne for those videos and reports.

Thanks, Yvonne. I'll go read. We are debating the juicer or the blender in our house. I prefer smoothies because it fills me up, but could see the benefit to drinking juice as well. Maybe variety is the spice of life! :)

I personally favor Green Smoothies over Juicing because they are easier to clean up after, you eat the fiber as well, and they are more filling. I make a 32 oz. pitcher and I drink the whole thing as my meal.

The great debate and a debate it is will go on and on. It depends who you want to listen to. Both sides have valid points. I still choose my Green Smoothie over Juice.

Thanx Chaz for your sage tips! I have read that having juice lets you have more veggies all at once, hence more nutrition fast. The smoothies I know have all the fiber included which is surely good. Victoria Butenko says her life was turned around with having smoothies after juicing for years. I can´t figure out tho WHY. Is it the fact of having the fiber? I know for me that juice goes down easier, but don´t want to be on the wrong train just in case. I need to Google some.....THANX!

I'm just a novice, but the difference between juicing and a whole smoothie is HUGE! Years ago, we saw several commercials on juicers, and since it seemed fairly affordable, we got one. It took tons of fruit to make one small glass of juice for each of the family...but we had triple the pulp left over. I saved it and added it to my cereal in the morning because I couldn't bear to waste all of that. Because there was so much extra pulp, it was a lot of clean up, whereas with a whole food smoothie, I just have a few ends the I throw away, or inedible parts, like the skin from an avocodo or something.

With a whole food smoothie, it makes a nice thick smoothie, and you use most of the whole veggie or fruit. It also fills you up because you are getting all of the fiber from the skins and the whole fruit or veggie. I have added water to make a smoothie thinner - but I'm still getting all of the fiber from the whole food...not wasting it, like we did juicing. (My juicer sits on the shelf in the basement.)

I REALLY want to know the differences in having JUICE to having a SMOOTHIE. It seems that the green smoothie is healthier, but why? Is it truly smarter to do a smoothie rather than juicing? Or blending them together? Somebody tell me....

Thanks Travelnista - that's exactly what I was hoping to hear! When the energy goes up, I will definitely be letting everyone know - I'm looking forward to it. I love green smoothies, and we just got a Vitamix so I will definitely be continuing. I have fun adding various ingredients. The Vitamix demonstrator added green cabbage and a carrot to everything that he made....even ice cream. I will definitely be concentrating on making mine green though.

My favorite green smoothie so far is when I peeled a whole orange, froze it, then added it to my green smoothie of spinach and Boston Lettucs the next morning...it not only tasted delicious but smelled so citrusy, too!

I'd say that your body is detoxing. Tiredness is one side effect of detoxing. This should pass soon so don't give up. you'll get that rush of energy soon.
