I shared a green smoothie with my DH today and a kale salad at lunch. He was very amused. I told him to get used to it. We will be going on vacation in April for a week and he is in for a big surprise! :)

Back to work tomorrow and rain is coming on Wed.

Oh, my new juicer came and it was broken!! Sending it back. Darn!

R2, yes strawberries set me back a bit today. But ya know something? I'd rather pay the price than poison the earth and my body any further. THIS is my HEALTH insurance policy. Not to be confused with what is known by the same name and is actually MEDICAL insurance.

I vote with my $ and with my fork or blender actually. I vote for organic! I vote for the local farmers. I vote for my co-op. And, yes, I influenced Whole Foods being built here. Proud of it actually! LOL

I do understand that everyone has to follow their path their way. I only hope to be the wind behind your sails (and everyone else's) towards organic purchases.

Thanks for that link for the download. It worked perfectly.

Thanks for the feedback. I checked the links, Yvonne, and they look like they are good resources to have on hand. I'm not much into lemons but I am looking at using limes and I have a lot of citrus around me. The white part of the peel still leaves me wondering. I was told it contains most of the nutrients of the fruit (I question the "most" part) and I can understand being told to not use it because of the bitter taste. I still have some learning to do I guess.
I agree with you Karen, organic is the way to go and I'm heading in that direction. When you get the Whole Foods in your area you may better understand my concerns about cost. When I can buy two quarts of strawberries for $5 at Publix and one quart of organic strawberries at WF for $6 it makes a difference. I bought the organic strawberries but I'm glad they didn't have any organic cucumbers. I'm buying more organic foods but I'm having to buy less. For now I'll peel the conventional cucumber and take my chances.
I'm in transition, as I've been most of my life but I'm a bit more focused now. The positions I held a couple of months ago about this stuff have changed. They will change again. I just want to move in a direction that is healthy for me and the world around me. The input from all the green smoothie people has been tremendously valuable. (Your comments are always worth way more than 2 cents Karen) Thanks Green People!

In an attempt to contribute more the following link has detailed nutrient information about fruits. It is somewhat limited but for what it has it looks good. You have to load the program on your computer but it was referred by Kim Komando and she checks out sites before she makes recommendations. I believe it to be safe.

My 2 cents for what it is worth: years ago when I was on the raw road before one of my instructors menioned that lemon was the only fruit that you did not have to worry about being organic. I forgot exactly why.

And you do know, R2 that I truly believe in my heart of hearts that organic in produce, especially when blending/juicing is the healthiest way to go. If you can not possibly get it where you live, then I do understand. But if it is cost, I am spending the same on organic as I did toxic laden produce. I am eating lots less and that does factor in.

Thanks Yvonne, I was waiting for you to give the great answer you did. I am checking out that link right now.

I have read that the white pith and the peel contains limonene which is a powerful cancer fighting nutrient. I have been reading a lot about lemons because I am concerned about recent digestive issues and maybe even my liver.

This is an article I read from Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center :
www.mskcc.org/cancer-care/herb/d-lim
on
ene

I love George Mateljan who wrote The World's Healthiest Foods and I subscribe to his daily email. This is what he has to say about lemon peels:

"Individual Concerns
Lemon and Lime Peels and Oxalates

The peels of lemons and limes are among a small number of foods that contain measurable amounts of oxalates, naturally-occurring substances found in plants, animals, and human beings. When oxalates become too concentrated in body fluids, they can crystallize and cause health problems. For this reason, individuals with already existing and untreated kidney or gallbladder problems may want to avoid eating lemon or lime peels. Laboratory studies have shown that oxalates may also interfere with absorption of calcium from the body. Yet, in every peer-reviewed research study we've seen, the ability of oxalates to lower calcium absorption is relatively small and definitely does not outweigh the ability of oxalate-containing foods to contribute calcium to the meal plan. If your digestive tract is healthy, and you do a good job of chewing and relaxing while you enjoy your meals, you will get significant benefits—including absorption of calcium—from calcium-rich foods plant foods that also contain oxalic acid."

The whole article is a great read and discusses all aspects of the lemon.

After being told that spinach should be avoided if my family has a history of kidney stones I've had other concerns about what is and isn't beneficial in my smoothies. While looking into a HOAX E MAIL about lemons being a cancer cure I've learned more about the peel of citrus fruits being beneficial. I've seen some people use the whole fruit and others peel off the outer edge, leaving the white part. Is that distinction a matter of personal preference or a health/safety concern? I was always of the belief that cucumber skins were toxic yet I've been advised to use the whole cucumber. Everybody knows they should wash fruits and vegetables yet often the seeds are treated with pesticides or applied to the buds, before the skin exists. I would think that would put the toxins inside rather than on the skins. I agree that organic is preferred but it isn't always available, or affordable. (Being raised in farm country I've seen a lot of organic material I wouldn't want on my food plus I'm trying to keep the cost of my smoothies under $10 a serving!:)
If somebody has info on what to avoid or be cautious of, if anything, in regards to the peel concerns, or maybe a link that lists the +'s and -'s, that would be appreciated. I have no trouble finding the benefits but the cautions are often absent. I'm sure its out there but I'm relatively new and have yet to see it.
The link has some good general information about citrus peels. www.livestrong.com/article/490637-be

You can use flax oil in your green smoothies of course. Coconut water sounds yummy actually. I'll have to get some of that this week. Omega 3's in flax oil are an essential element in any vegans diet. Flax is loaded!

When you state things such as "protein" "carbohydrates" and "fats" it's very important to discern animal or plant kingdom sources.

All of those choices are in the plant kingdom in the raw state in the way it was meant for us to have them. The meat producers and the dairy industry has truly done a number on Americans about calcium and protein. We need only 12% of our total caloric intake to come from raw, plant-based protein such as nuts and seeds. Calcium is necessary of course and is abundant in the greens we use for our smoothies.

If you have a chance to please spend a little time on the links I have in my signature area. They are invaluable sources of information for us people seeking a healthier and plant-based eating program.

Good info already and it's my first day. I had not heard of using oil in my smoothie. DS just brought home some coconut water for us to use and his request for kale, mango, pineapple and coconut water. I guess he has them at work. Is oil essential? Or because I am not a raw foodie, do I get my "fat" in other areas?

No it's not bad, a new bottle, and not rancid. I have been asking questions every where and that filmy feeling is something most have to get past. It is recommended to use other oils in your smoothies in its place.

Cindy, about tracking: I am reading a book about converting to a raw eating program. It has a resource part later on in the book. I am reading it on my Kindle and don't want to go to that section yet. LOL It has a resource for tracking our fruits/vegies and such. It isn't Spark though. I'll make certain to post it when I get there. Probably this week.

Have you ever had flax oil before? I've never tried it in anything other than my fruit/protein smoothies. I would try it again and this time don't go over 1 tbl. I would have probably used coconut oil instead in what you made. It's denser and tastes wonderful!

Today was the 1st time I ever put flax oil in a smoothie, well actually a Raw soup I made for lunch. I blended 4 large carrots, an inch of ginger, 1/2 tsp. turmeric, sea salt, and 16 oz. of water. I was supposed to add 1/2 avocado but my avocados aren't ripe enough. I substituted 2 tsp. flax oil.

Ok, it's kind of hard to describe but now my mouth feels kind of heavy and it's like a slight coating or film in my mouth (especially on the top of my gums. It is a weird feeling. Is that normal? Or did I use too much flax oil, maybe should have used 1 tsp? emoticon

It is up to each individual. Sometimes I will drink 2 or 3 different smoothies a day. Or a smoothie and a Raw Soup. We have lots of Raw Soups in our Recipe Forum.

Chia seeds are excellent in smoothies because they will thicken the smoothie. Just be sure to let your smoothie sit to give the chia seeds the time to bloom.

One thing I like to do with chia seeds when I am craving a treat, I make Raw Chocolate Mouse.

1/2 large avocado California (Haas)
Chia seeds - 1 tbsp
Cocoa, dry powder, unsweetened, 1 tbsp
Medjool dates, 1 date, pitted and chopped *
1/2 tsp. Vanilla Extract
1 cup water

*you can substitute agave or your favorite sweetener

Blend all of the ingredients together except for the chia seeds. Once it is blended, add the chia seeds, stir well till thoroughly mixed in, Pour into 2 pretty bowls or 2 dessert glasses, pop in fridge for at least 15 mins. (the longer it sits the better) and they will absorb the water.

Bet you eat both of them, so next time just put into one bowl. emoticon

I do not count calories. I figure everything I am eating or drinking is raw organic and super healthy. I allow my body to tell me when enough is enough. I think the Green Smoothie Girl said something along the line of this, if you drink a basic green smoothie you could drink 2 gallons of it and still only reach 1500 calories.
A few times I have logged them, but only when I stray away from a simple green one and start adding high calorie items. I was shocked, but I still drank it.
I watch carefully that they stay pretty clean now with a lot of greens and some fruits. I am not one to add high calorie items any more. I am taking it easy.
Check out some of the recipes here on SP for raw food/raw vegan smoothies, some great members took the pain staking work to figure some of them out for us. I have to make sure I am doing a green smoothie and not a sweet fu-fu yummy tummy fatty butt smoothie. With all sweet things like 1/2 cups of nut butters, chocolate and cups of creamy coconut meat and 4 bananas, filled with dates and honey. Then I might as well go to Dairy Queen :-O
Hope this helps. Sorry if I offended anyone didn't mean to, I am not the smoothie police :-O
I made sure I said; I and me :-)

Funny things.
when I started drinking green smoothies a couple weeks ago I could barely drink 8 oz because of the texture and bitterness. But the last couple of days I've found myself wanting more when my 16 oz is gone! :) I guess it's time to put my magic bullet away and pull out the big blender :)

Are the negative consequences of non organic foods more significant with raw foods than cooked foods? It is a concern.

Thanks for the help. The yeast is expensive and I didn't want to buy it if there was a possibility I wouldn't use it. I am looking into buying the B 12 drops. I do use flax seeds sometimes and was also looking at hemp. Thanks for the website, I'll check it out.

I do use nutritional yeast, different from brewer's yeast, but I don't rely on it for B12 and I don't usually add it to my smoothies. My favorite way to take it in is rubbed into kale to make kale chips. OMG I could eat the whole batch!...and have!

I do not like the taste of brewers yeast in my smoothies, no matter how much I mask it, the amounts needed from it as a source is to much to hide for my taste.
I use a lot of sea veggies, spirulina, seeds or oils from seeds like flax, hemp and chai to list a few. I know there is issues out there discussing B12. I also would love to hear what others have to say. For my daughter and husband they eat the organic omega eggs. I do not. I have my doctor watch them as I did drop a lot when I went off meat. We keep an eye on it, as sever low B12 can cause issues.

Does any one add brewers yeast to their smoothies for the B 12 supplement. I've been reading articles about vegan eating and vitamins. I have read that we need to get b 12, omega 3's and some other vitamins in. I am gonna go to store and buy some of the spray or drops B 12 which I have heard is better than for you cause it goes into your system faster and better. What do you do to get your omega 3's in.

Thanks all.The price was just holding me back, but I quit smoking not long ago and that was costing me $70 a week (Iknow ridiculous)and I think I could justify putting that money toward something that will get a lot of use! Diane

I have been reading a lot on digestion and soft serve is what we want...

If he is going to get you a vitamix...go for it, I dream of one. I believe you will never regret it. Watch a few videos on youtube.
Black and Decker has a blender challenge that Yvonne has posted here before and it is really great. But you can search here or go to youtube to find it. I bought a kitchenaide because it wasn't in our budget to buy any of the others. I love it, it blew a gasket the other day after a year of rough use,($6.00) I use it everyday and have put it through a lot with processing carrots, greens and so on. One thing I do is; on my crushing ice selection I pulverize my carrots and harder produce and frozen items. After they are soft I use the other setting. I love this machine, but if DH would buy me a vitamix he would be greatly thanked ;-)

I've used a Cuisinart for maybe 5 years now and I've been happy with it. I thought it was a 600 watt but when trying to buy parts I found out it is really a 500. It's starting to go and the parts I would need are not available so a new one is in the future. I am shopping around now but the Vitamix is out of my financial grasp at this time. If I could I'd go for the Vitamix. My son has one and it is used all the time for everything but smoothies. It's a couple of notches above the normal blenders.

I'll never look at soft serve the same again!!LOL. So I added grapefruit to my green smoothie today,I don't have a vita mix and my blender left big chunks of the white stuff that's on each slice and it wasn't a favorite with mine!! DH got me a new cuisinart blender for Christmas which I haven't opened yet,he offered to get me a vita mix but I insisted we not spend that much money right now.My question is before I open this should I exchange it for a vita mix?? ...soft serve, is normal and healthy. I would blend them more, or chew them.
I see no fiber just light green soft serve.

Trying not to be too graphic here for those of you who drink green smoothies daily - what do your stools look like? Mine kind of look soft and loose. You can see the undigested bits of fiber. Is this normal?

Sorry emoticon

Hi leeney. my question about citris was prompted by my naturopath, she told me a juice of a whole lemon a day was too much but that was just in water. Also I have seen a tooth paste comercial about the effects of food acid on tooth enamel, specifically they mentioned citrus
