Broccoli in all stages, from very young to full florets and stems. I also do sprouts once and awhile as well or the rabe. I find rabe is very inexpenisve. I got a huge bag the other day for $2.00. I do not like broccoli other wise, but love it in a smoothie.

Kathy, I don't think there are any hard and fast rules, but I think of it this way. For my green smoothies I like to use non-starchy veggies and herbs as much as possible so I would limit things like peas and avocados. Not saying I don't include them, but that I try to concentrate on leafy greens. I do make other smoothies in which I do put just about anything though.

There are all kinds of fresh, green things out there that I haven't explored yet, but,we are limited to what's available in our local area. I have a store in my community that has lots of fresh, some organic, produce and I will stand there and look for things I haven't tried yet and pick the brain of the produce manager. Sometimes he picks mine, too! He didn't know that you can eat carrot, radish, and fennel greens, for example. There are also the wild edibles...something I hope to explore a bit more next year.

Have fun...play with your food! emoticon

I have a dumb question to ask. What is considered green vegetable for the smoothies? I know there is spinach, kale , collard greens, dandelion greens, peas, celery, avocados is considered one, right. Oh and beet greens. Am I missing any? Are there others that can go into the smoothie? Appreciate the help, just trying to figure out if there are others out there that I should be trying.

Mike, I just noticed that your question is still unanswered, so here's my 2 cents. Citrus fruit, while acidic, has an alkalizing effect in the digestive tract, so no worries there. I can't imagine that you eat so much that it would be a problem. About the avocado...I'm not sure what recipes you are referring to. If it's smoothies, just reduce the amount that the recipe calls for. I usually use about 1/4 avocado for my smoothies which, with the other ingredients, makes about 32 oz. Not sure what 'effect' you are referring to.

Diane, that's remarkable! Your doc is gonna be amazed! emoticon

and R2....kudzu? really? emoticon ok, ok, this is me being open minded emoticon Maybe you'll be the one to discover some new use for the stuff and retire as a millionaire! In any case, I applaud your enterprise and creativity!

Publix had "Glory Greens" for a buck a bag so I tried Collard greens and Mustard greens for the first time, together. This was close to being the first smoothie I didn't like. I guess my tastes haven't matured enough yet.

Seeing Kudzu around everywhere I was wondering if was blendable. From the quick Google Search this morning I didn't see any reference to blending. It cures just about everything but not much info on the nutritional side. It seemx to be used as animal feed mostly. Eight oz has over 250 calories and that is a demotivator for me. Anybody have information or experience with Kudzu? (other than it taking over and destroying everything in it's path)

thanks. I have a couple other questions. first of all I use a lot of orange and lemon is that to much acid, is it bad for anything like your teeth. Also I can't eat avocado, to rich and many recipes include them is there a way to minimize the effect

Nope, straight from the freezer. Sometimes they make a neat noise as they rattle around before getting chewed up!

I don't add ice to my smoothies I use frozen foods (bananas, spinach, peas, grapes). Yum.

I may be crazy but I add 0.5 c of frozen peas to my smoothie every day. They are kinda sweet (okay not really sweet, but for a veggie sweet) and make it kinda creamy (like the bananas do). 0.5c gives me about 4 g protein. If I am doing heavy weight training I also add in tofu (silken) (3oz=4g prt) and have just started adding hemp powder, but not very much. I find that my body really tells me if I don't get my protein.

I've never been one to add any liquid other than water to my smoothies, adding "milk" kinda freaks me out. But as stated earlier, I may be crazy.

Thanks Karen. I put almond milk in my smoothies, I use the unsweetened vanilla one. I put flax seed in if I remember. I forgot about eating peanut butter which I do. I like putting it on celery and apples.

I am not eating a raw diet, just a vegan diet. Is it still good to have smoothies, or is only good when you are eating a raw diet? Sorry for all the dumb questions.

I was thinking that about you, you are a fountain filled with wonderful information flowing from you to us all to take in.
I don't always put sprouts in my smoothies, but have when my sprouts have over took my kitchen LOL
If I get rushed and can not eat my afternoon raw soup and salad, I have actually tossed it in the blender and drank it. I have found a fondness for savory smoothies.
My favorite lunch is a raw tomato, pepper, basil, onion, garlic, spinach smoothie.
I also do ABC in my first smoothie of the day; apple, beet, carrot with what ever else I have on hand. I absolutely love beet greens, one of my favorites. I use about 6 cups of greens in each 32 ounce smoothie.
I have these for my liver. I am working my way out of a serious illness and healing my liver....it is working!!
I love, my doctor! He is not only a medical doctor, but also has a special interest in alternative healing methods...raw diets being one of the methods he uses on his patients along with conventional medicine. I always blew him off when he mentioned it to me. I never would have guessed, that I would be doing what I am....and loving it!

Kathy there is great discussion about how much protein we actually need. I've read many books from the vegan/vegetarian way of life that states clearly that the stats the meat producers and dairy association give us are totally way out of wack and we actually need a lot less.

Now when we ingest healthy protein from plant sources you are in a different realm altogether. A healthy, healing realm.

Sprouts, as Erin kindly mentioned are very good to put into a green smoothie-but not too much. Many mix nut milks, hemp milks, rice milks in with their green smoothies. If you can do that, do that. I can't. Many recommend not to. I think it is up to the individual.

As for sprouting--I am an avid believer in it. It's the best way to get the highest quality of protein out of beans and seeds, is cost effective, and fun! Go to Sproutman.com to get a gander.

I do 2 types of smoothies a day. My first one is my breakfast smoothie. It is fruit and protein based. My green smoothies are fruit and greens. I have put sprouts in them before. Next time I'm putting LESS sprouts in them...LOL I like uncomplicated green smoothies.

I normally eat raw organic (duh!) almonds, cashews, etc for other protein. I do hemp milk, another type of good protein source. I also do peanut butter and almond butter. You can also make raw almond milk or other nut milks. There is a book on the market if you can get it cheap enough: Not Milk, Nut Milk...one of the best.

I hope we gave you enough to help. Erin is a wealth of knowledge.

P.S. I typed this out entirely with my Fritzi cat laying across my arms. Not bad! LOL

I add hemp, chia, quinoa (sprouted) all sort of sprouts, like broccoli. I made a smoothie the other day that had 18g of protein, single batch. I shoot for 20-30g my doctor is very happy with that.
beans (I sprout lentils)
asparagus,
cauliflower,
broccoli
google and find what other raw foodies do.
I also add spiralina powder and an amazing trio of grass powders.

To answer a much earlier question about tracking, I do track, and it take a long time! I also weigh my food (don't eyeball it). I have a hard time losing weight and even eating well (mostly Eat to Live). I get around 2000 calories (serving of nuts, beans, avocado etc. keep the number high). I have found if I let my fat and protein drop then I get migraines that wont stop until it goes back up (took me over a week to figure that out-ouch!). I also find I don't have the energy to lift weights or do cardio longer than 1 hour (not a good thing to discover when you are 15 miles from home on your bike).

So for me I track to make sure I get what I need daily and to optimize my caloric intake. Oh and I still have my triggers (almost anything sweet and processed) so I track to see the caloric damage as well.

Mike, thanks for sharing this. At the end of the week I sometimes have 1 or 2 stalks of one of my greens. I've been tempted to freeze them and didn't check yet whether I could or not.

Kathy, I wish I could find dandelion greens. Very healthy for you. I'm sure Whole Foods will have them. My local co-op doesn't.

As to the smoothie issue. Your greenies shouldn't taste bitter if you are not overdoing the amount of greens % to fruit. Do 60% fruit and the rest greens. I find that citrus-pink grapefuit as a matter of fact is scurmptious with my greens. So is banana, strawberry, and pear. As time goes on we develop a craving for more greens in our smoothies and less fruit. Then and only then should we do that. Not within the first several months. Depending on our system.

As to rotation: I have 3 choices per week. 2 of those choices I rotate the type. I usually use baby spinach and mix with the other two choices and not every day. I might have lacinato kale with spinach one day and rainbow kale with regular red lettuce the next. If I eat rainbow Kale one week, I will get another type of kale the next. I rotate the rotation..LOL

The masters of the green smoothies are prolific writers and youtube video makers. There is a lot that will be posted in the near future. Keep watching.

You are doing fantastic!

I bought some dandelion greens today to try in my smoothie. Is it any good, do they have a bitter taste. I sure hope not. I also bought some kale to try in a smoothie too. I read in one of the articles that you should not eat the same the green to switch them up cause even though they are good for you they can also be harmful is that true? I have so much to learn yet. I read your articles you have posted Karen, thank you, they were alot of help, infact that may be where I read that about the greens.

Another thing to consider when it comes to cabbage is not to use the outer leaves. I have used cabbage in my smoothies many times before and liked it fine, but the other day I used some outer leaves. Big mistake! They gave the smoothie a very sharp, unpleasant taste.

Regarding cabbage or beans in smoothies: cabbage is fine in smoothies. Just don't put too much. LOL On the beans: I don't do canned! See below remarks. I sprout my beans. Yes, I do put my sprouted beans in with my green smoothies on occasion.

When I keep my green leafies in a container of water(stems in water) and a plastic bag over their heads with a free air vent area, they keep easily for a week.

I keep everything in plastic bags. I tried the green bags and am still not sold on them.

I would NOT recommend anything in cans. Cans have BPH on the inside. Canned produce is filled with sodium in most cases and usually are GMO's. If you have to buy canned, do so at a co-op or Whole Foods/Trader Joe's market and ask which cans are NOT laced with BPH and what produce is GMO safe. Here in the good ol' USA the conglomerates do not have to label those two nasties.

There is no reason that produce cannot stay fresh in the refrigerator for a week when properly cared for. I won't even ask you if your produce is organic. You know darn well mine is. LOL

Well some times I feel like my always going to the store. But it seems like my fruits and veggies last a while. my greens get a little wilted but I just put them in a smoothie and they are fine.

Asparagus, green beans. Cucumbers and tomatoes don't seem to last very long. Broccoli, carrots, potatoes (in the refregerator), celery, apples, oranges, pears seem to last longer.

But maybe you should get some canned or frozen foods ( frozen foods you make too) you can heat up when you don't have any fresh foods then your eating healthy foods and not just anything. I end up making too much of soup , stir fry, sauteed veggies, ect so I freeze half of it and then when I don't have anything or I'm too tiered to cook I just heat up some frozen food and then I'm not eating just anything.

how long do you keep your produce. I am always running out of food because I don't drive and can't get to the store as frequently as I need to. I try every 3 days but can't always

Hey Kathy I feel that if your only eating fruits and veggies as smoothies, salads or cooked that you would have to eat alot just to gain weight. Its when your eating high calorie prosesed foods that you have to worry about the calories. (well that is my guess that makes sense to me after all the reading I've been doing)

Has anyone tried cabbage in their smoothies? and what about beans?

Kathy take a moment if you haven't already done so, and go to one or both of the links I have in my signature area for tons of information about green smoothies. I've been on them daily for a month now and it is incredible what has happened with my body. And, I've dropped close to 14 lbs. I can hardly wait for another month.

Also I'd recommend Victoria Boutenko's books and also Robyn Openshaw. Both of these women, also in the links, have their books available on Amazon.com.

Thanks Karen. I am so new to all this stuff. For the most part I eat a vegan diet. I don't eat any dairy, sugar, and trying not to have yeast either. Also I only just recently I started added chicken here and there. I started the Daniel fast back in oct and liked the way I felt and decided to keep eating that way and now trying to add to that for health and wt loss. I had heard that eating green smoothies were suppose to be very good for you and better than juicing, which I have also tried. That is why I was worried about the calories. Thanks for all the help.

Kathy, I drink a quart a day on average. I also have a fruit based smoothie for breakfast. Then I have 2 raw vegan snacks and a salad for dinner. I am losing weight steadily, almost daily. But the main thing is my health! Weight is part of the equasion for sure.

When you switch to a plant-based eating program you do not have to concentrate on calories. You can if you want of course. It is a whole different world. The world of feeding the body solid nutrition it can utilitze for healing of the body and effortless weight loss/management.

How much green smoothies do you drink? I saw where someone drank a gallon of smoothies in a day and just ate their dinner. Do any of you do that, and I have a hard time believing that you can lose wt that way. The smoothie I made the other day was over 300 calories. I still have alot to lose and I don't want to gain from drinking these. I am loving how I am feeling just after 3 days of drinking green smoothies for breakfast. Thanks

10 percent of our caloric intake needs to be from raw fat sources from the list you gave. On the protein issue, I think it goes by percentage of intake. Raw nuts and seeds and the like are much different to the body and utilized far better, than from animal protein. I don't see where anyone could gorge on a pound of raw nuts as an example. The body tells us when to stop.

Follow your instincts. I'm sure you have become aware of your innate guidance towards living foods has drastically increased since switching to raw living food.

There is no limit on the amount of questions you can ask. Ask away.

Another question; can a person get to much fat? Eating young coconut meat and oil is very high in calories and fat, flax seed and oil, avocados, most seeds and nuts.
Same with proteins, being that many of our seeds are more protein than meat, is there a danger of to much protein? Has anyone seen any numbers on any of this?
OK it looks like 3 questions :-)

I agree with Leeney. It is a cumbersome task and one that I don't want to add to my list of cumbersome tasks..LOL

Everyone needs to make up their minds about tracking. I am 99.88888 raw and it is said in many books that a raw vegan diet doesn't depend on calorie count for weight loss. That is good enough for me. I know that what I am doing is a hell of a lot less calories than in what I considered a healthy diet when I lost my weight before. Little did I know!

Great question Erin and one that I've been contemplating over. Thanks!

Erin, I was for a while, but it's pretty cumbersome, especially since I've been doing a different one each day. I finally decided that if I'm eating raw (for the most part) and not going 'nuts' that I'm probably ok. I am at goal weight, so I keep track just by weighing in daily. If I notice a gain, I might go back to tracking for a while. While I was losing, I did tend to track more regularly, but I was only drinking a fairly standard smoothie then. Since I've come to SP and especially this team, I've really expanded my smoothie repertoire.

If it comes from a plant, eat it; if it was made in a plant, don't. Michael Pollan

Do you measure and also break down amounts for tracking? Heck do you track?
