Thanks Erin! Did a green smoothie today with 3 handfuls of mixed salad greens, frozen blueberries, and a couple of carrots. It was very good!

I clean mine everyday. I have two; one centrifugal and one auger style, I like them both. The auger one I use more for greens and wheat grass. I don't mind the clean up it is pretty easy. I save my pulp, it seems so wasteful to throw it. But I try and use it in bake goods, veggie burgers, and compost or mix with my dirt for my micro greens and wheat grass as a base then place down the inch or two of dirt.

My sister-in-law, who is a doctor owns the green star and loves it. She just hangs the chute over the kitchen sink and juices away. I asked her how often she cleans it out, and she says about every 3 days. So that being said....it's something to consider. But me, I would want to clean it out like every 2 days. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx

Erin I have used pulp in my smoothies but I also added other fruits and greens so maybe you could do half pulp and half greens and fruits and see if something like that works for you. I also had my pulp frozen and when it thaws it seems pretty juicy.

I use the nutribullet as well, but the pulp is so dry from juicing it became a pulpy mess and left the mouth muddy. I used over 16 ounces of water to counter act the pulp, plus the water and aloe water I normally use for a liquid smoothie.

I love more greens and less fruit, as for me sugar is still sugar and affects me. I have to watch the sugar content in the fruits I use. I like burning fat instead of sugar as well. Well my body likes burning fat....I like fruit personally LOL But the body says no-no.

I have the Nutribullet. So when I go to make my "green" smoothie, I make sure that I have water in mine as well as the fruit. They recommend a 40% green & 60% fruit, plus water. The nutribullet uses the pulp and yes it can get really thick if there is no water in it. However, that being said, I generally like to use flaxseed in mine or raw wheat germ and if it is kind of thick then I will eat it with a spoon sort of like a cold, sweet soup.

Live and Learn; I thought that I would be frugile and a smarty and use the fiber left over from my morning juice. It was pulp from green apples and carrots. DO NOT USE your pulp this way. It took so much water to mix it in and as well leaves a really dry mouth when drinking it. Nope do not use a filler in your smoothie like pulp. I ended up with 3 quarts when I should of had only two and of course not being wasteful I will drink them all. The taste is OK, just that weird dry thicker smoothie than I am not use to.

CCHEF, it sounds like you are making soup smoothies too. Creative and as long as you like what you are doing and it is working more power to you.

I tried doing starches and couldn't handle it. Some can, but I also tried experiment once and boy did I end up with a tummy ache. I will spare you the details LOL

Check out some of the links here, they have great information on combining different foods and some awesome recipes too. Of course there is youtube, I love it! Quick and you can learn so much. If you want just google green smoothies, many sites will pop up.
Yvonne/Travelnista, our team leader has a recipe book here on SP and has many raw soups alias green smoothie savory style, that you might like as well. Doesn't mean you can't warm them up. It is your choice and your journey.
Have fun, it sounds like you are!

Erin, I favor the sweet side of things lol so am doing a lot of frozen berries mixed with frozen veggies, etc.

Er, my smoothies aren't always green in color but I define green smoothies as nutritional drinks that I also love.

Years ago I called my green smoothies "salad smoothies" ... I don't do well with eating a lot of salad or veggies but discovered that made into whole food drinks with all the fiber and nutrients in there, I started to feel better. So I've done green smoothie making off and on for years but am newly dedicated.

The past two weeks I've been somewhat upset and unwell and have been making drinks with one cup unsweetened frozen cherries (I can't find organic but I do them anyway) and water. Yesterday I added blueberries to this. I am going to add fresh spinach when I am able to get to the store ... driving is an issue at the moment until I get my new glasses.

Yesterday I also made soup with my new machine. I dumped one serving frozen mixed veggies (Cascadian Farms organic, which is my favorite brand, but there are a lot of good brands) ... the mix was starchy, so next time I do intend to add a fresh green also. The mix was corn, potatoes and carrots. I covered with water and processed but it stalled, so added more water and it smoothed beautifully, then I dumped in bowl and microwaved and poured in cup and sipped. It was delicious.

I am not opposed to adding non frozen stuff, it is just that the frozen organic products work best for me.

I use frozen organic veggies in my smoothies and often favor a veggie mix that has asparagus in it. I think asparagus is delicious in a green drink.

have used dulse in my savory ones. But only around 1 TBSP and it was fine. I think any would be OK minus the agar. I don't know why it wouldn't work, it's green, slightly salty and so is spinach....and I have had stronger greens than that flavor....and so have you LOL sorry couldn't resist emoticon

Personal I would love them in a savory smoothie adding just a few to a V8 style.
I love asparagus raw though, where many people do not. I eat them like a carrot or celery stick with a small amount of ranch style dip. Yummy, now you have me hungry.

Perhaps try a very small amount at first. The lower ends are real tough so I might suggest you dock that part off first.

Good Luck and let us know if you do...enquiring minds ya know :-)

Historically I never liked Asparagus but a) my tastes have/are changing and b) when put in a smoothie the old experience doesn't count. Mixed views on search results. It's not something that has a large following at best.

Have you tried googling it?
I personal would hesitate, but kudos to the brave heart that would try. Perhaps in a savory soup like smoothie, maybe pretty good. I have found with asparagus, you love them or hate them. Have you eaten them before?

I think I've asked before but does anyone use Asparagus in their smoothie. I never ate Asparagus anyway and I'm reluctant to buy a bunch for my smoothies but it looks so good on display. How does it affect the taste.

How was that smoothie...coffee never would have thunk(LOL) that....hmm might have to create one too.
We travel most of the winter and fall wit DH's work, so I do not get the pleasure of growing a full garden....but I have trays and pots we travel with. I have trays of wheat grass, microgreens and pots of tomatoes, and many pots of herbs; basil (my favorite)parsley, oregano, sage, Asian basil, lemon balm, mint, rosemary, thyme. When we get down in Florida here in the next few weeks I will add cilantro and more basil and start a couple of new tomato plants. I sprout as well in house. I keep jars going all the time.

Today I am doing one and it will be simple again. Protein powder, spirulina and bee pollen, spinach and lemon balm and almond milk. I have some fresh cooked pumpkin may add that and some cinnamon as well. Thinking to use more herbs and sprouts and see what I can come up with that is tasty and healthy. I need to start moving some of this weigh off again. Vacation is over and time to get serious again!

Came home from a school meeting hungry, so I got to work on my smoothie. Decided to use the last of the morning coffee as my liquid base. Picked an apple from the tree, threw in some mixed berries, and found my bag of fresh spinach in the freezer (oops).

Anyone grow their own veggies? We have a few small raised beds, so we've got mainly tomatoes, squash and basil going for our summer garden. I planted a six pack of kale and a six pack of chard for my winter garden.

I have space to plant more winter goodness, just not really sure what to plant.

VERY GREEN tasting and a bit creamy....nothing my family would share or care to drink. It for me is a healer.

I am going to check out the link...love any great new healthy help. THANKS!

Pumpkins are in all the stands and farmer's areas. Many different varieties, I bought two different types yesterday that I have never tried. Just took out the long pink one from the oven. Who knew! The other one is a pattypan small white ones with a ruffle edge so cute. I always though they were gourds...who new...again ! :-) That one I will slice and grill slow and dark with EVOO on it. That is what the farmer told me to do and heck I am game.

The tomatoes are to die for and I am going to do a few savory soup smoothies this week, I love mine kicked up with peppers and hot sauce. Yum, I eat them cold where my daughters and husband like them warmed up, which is OK. I have heard that the tomato is better and healthier if cooked. Adding spinach, onion, garlic, celery and cucumber too.

Almond milk (1 cup)
protein powder (scoop)
spinach (2 cups fresh)
wheat grass (frozen cube, mine will be ready in a few days)
mixed sprouts ( I grew them)
spirulina (1 tsp)
bee pollen(1/4 tsp)
stevia (1 packet)

Not a good one taste wise, very green emoticon almost to green. But it went down and I know I did my body good. I am targeting a lower carb diet and I have found that this gives me a low carb healthy green raw glass of beaming goodness....did I sound convincing LOL

I'm the opposite. Mixing new ones every day. Contemplating today's at the moment.

Pineapple, spinach, apple and mint I think is what I'll be mixing momentarily.

I started wheat grass again over the week end....for some reason
I believe this is a cure all LOL
Reduced the size of smoothies to 16 ounces daily. Still keeping it simple, berries and greens, a bit of bee pollen and spirulina, and whey protein.

I personal get very tired of the extreme no-no-s and don't do or eat this it is so bad. Especially when I am trying hard to eat good and healthy, and it seems good and healthy isn't good enough any more. I think if we try our best and change as much as we can, we should relax and enjoy living and not to extremes, unless that is what you enjoy doing. Then go for it. I use to feel I was walking on egg shells or always looking over my back, for the food police to jump on my back and tell me I am doing it all wrong.

I like and use spinach a lot and know I am not doing a consistent rotation, but I am eating better than I have in the past. I also try to improve where I can and when I can. I know I like most of my greens on a plate, but truly I know that I will not sit and chew each meal with what I should be chewing...this is a fact. But if I can drink my daily "required" amounts than I feel I am doing good. So hats off to us for doing our best our own way!

Today my smoothie will be divided in two parts for two snacks, not a meal replacement. My snacking (healthy snacks no junk) needs some discipline.

KAREN42BOYS I just read your post in the other thread and OOPS on the Collared Green advice. I don't know how to delete the whole post so I'll let it stand. I don't like peanut butter either.

Pre edit post.
If mustard greens aren't the smoothie enhancer you were hoping for I would suggest you not buy large quantities of Collard Greens either. The combination of the two took the wild-eyed enthusiasm out of my smoothie experimentation.

Glad you noticed!!
My smoothies are nothing honorable or cutting edge. I just try to get as much good stuff in them as I can because, other than the fruit, I wouldn't eat any of the other stuff if not in the smoothie. Stir Fry is the upper limit of my cooking ability and I stopped doing that several years ago. I'm sure I could start again but I have no intention of doing so as long as my Vita Mix keeps mixing.
I've accidentally flipped the low speed switch on but it's such a slow speed that it isn't a big deal. I've attempted to flip the high speed switch on a couple of times, without thinking, before going through the Low Speed, Variable Speed, High Speed sequence but nothing happened. If it had turned on I'm sure it would have woke me up but I guess you have to go through the process to get to the high speed.
I never thought I would be one to spend over $125 on a blender. In fact, I believe I gave my son the stink eye when he bought his Vita Mix. I've had mine for over a year, maybe two, and I just recently slipped up and let him know I had bought one also. I'm happy with what I have and will probably find fault in the newer model for the next several years. I'm sure it has many nice improvements but I'm not about to let facts alter my position. Truth be known I was very happy with the smoothies I made with my $65 Cuisinart Blender and it still sits on the counter waiting to be called back into action.
What I'm really happy about is that I found this group and learned that a world of nutrition existed beyond the fruit smoothies I had been enjoying. I hope that in two or three years I will be able to look at what I'm drinking today with the same degree of improvement as in the past two or three years.
When it comes to smoothies, I believe any starting place is a step in the right direction. Then just add a handful of spinach and tune into the Green Smoothie Team.

Boy all this sounds great! Except for the mustard green, I too am not a fan of them in a smoothie. I try and keep mine simple and light. My all time favorite is spinach for sweet ones and savory anything goes. Because I spice them up pretty good and it covers some of the bitterness of the "cooking" greens. I call them that because they are the ones I like better cooked LOL Even though with a raw pate' they are good too. Oh how our lives change :)

I use a nutri bullet for most of my smoothies and have my blenders put away, I suppose it is about time I dig at least one of them out and start making more raw foods again. Haven't been in Costco for about 3 months. I would unplug it as well, doesn't seem real safe now does it.

I am drinking one each day and when very busy I try and get in an additional quart. I know this; I am getting great benefits from them. Now to start dropping weight again.
I am sprouting again and I know that will help adding wheat grass in the AM to my diet and fresh microgreens as well.

I'm increasing the basic smoothie to be a daily thing now because I'm on the Eat to Live 6 week plan and I have not been eating enough raw greens. By "basic smoothie" I mean just fruit, greens and water - no fancy additions. I think it will be a very good addition to my daily meal plan.

I got mine from CostCo less than 2 weeks ago. I have an on/off switch, a high/low switch and a dial from 1 to 10. I always unplug because if you hit the switch it turns on even if there is no container on top. That seems dangerous to me, thus the unplugging.

I've continued my daily consumption of my version of a Green Smoothie although my 4 pints now last two days instead of one. It's been a rough 6 months and the Green Smoothies have kept me believing I'm getting sufficient nourishment. I'm glad I purchased the VitaMix when I did as I still don't cook. My weekly trips to Whole Foods keeps me in a Kale, Chard, Bok Choy, Carrots and Carrot greens, Beet greens and Celery rotation/compination. The Avocado and banana keep it smooth, fresh ground Flax Seed and Chia Seeds keep me smooth and I add Spirulina because it does good and a little Hemp Protein just because it sounds good. Frozen Blueberries and whatever fresh fruit looks good; pears, mango, apples and maybe or little melon de jour keep it out of the compost. If it doesn't go in the blender it doesn't get e't at this point in my life.
I am starting to produce some nice soil from the food scrap compost and hope to grow some of my own food in a year or two. (soil here is just dirty sand) I've attempted to use worms to aid the process but between the heat and red ants I've not done the worms any favors. I just purchased two plastic tubs and hope to make a productive system that will make good soil and happy worms. I also intend to build an easy to assemble stackable system that can be expanded as needed. All this because I hate to throw out the scraps.
Has anybody noticed that VitaMix has changed its blender. The demo at COSTCO had a different look to the controls. I didn't get a good look but what I did see was a switch that turned the power to the controls off, but not as an on/off switch. The sales person said it was so you didn't need to unplug it but I didn't realize you had to unplug it and don't know why you would. The controls are different and seem to offer fewer options. I think he "afterburner" option is gone and you now choose one of two speeds. It has added a "pulse" switch that I believe is as valuable as the "power" switch. The price was noticeably enhanced. ($125+/-) At a separate location in the store COSTCO had an end stack of the older model available which leads me to believe they are selling out that style in favor of the more expensive newer model, both having the same motor. I'm admittedly bias after spending way too much for a blender that now I couldn't do without. If anybody has taken a better look at the new model I'd like to hear what they think.
I still do Green Smoothies, I like seeing that the team has a new post every once in a while and I look forward to more activity from my Green Team friends. However, if you do feel the need to tell me to go to hell please word it in a way that makes me anticipate getting there. ;-)
Peace
fz

They have helped me restore my energy as well. I do not add a whole lot of fruit, mostly berries, greens, protein powder, spirulina and bee pollen.
Watch the bee pollen, if you have never done it before. I suggest you read up on it. It is cheap and goes a long ways. I think it also has helped or maybe the combination.
When I did a juice feast having a lot of fruit, I didn't have a good reaction. I backed off on the fruits and I did better. But that is just me, I can't eat real high carbs and do better on a lower carb diet.

Interesting that ou find green smoothies diminish night sweats. My hot flashes had basically stopped a month or o ago, and now that I'm a week plus into juicing, I'm having a few very mild hot flashes daily again. Hadn't thought to relate the restart to the smoothies.

YES YOU ARE! emoticon
I over indulged this summer, but am back cleaning up my act and the smoothies are a big key to helping me get back on track. I know when I drink them I am doing the best thing possible to fill me up for success.
The mental choice to do this, as well as getting the toxins out has been a challenge, but it is getting better each day.
Yesterday was a good day, I made 3 quarts and only drank one, but today I have two yummy ones waiting for me.
Last night was one of the better nights I had for sleep...hardly any night sweats, that alone is worth drinking at least one a day. But I am on a mission and that mission is to be healthier and lighter, and it is so much easier to do with like minded people and support!
For me summer fun is over and the Labor Day week end will not be an issue as I have a plan to stay away from bad choices, restaurants and have events planned for hiking and non food entertainment...this by far is one of the biggest problems I have... I love to dine out or celebrate with food. It has to become NOT the entertainer in my life.
I am glad to see you here DS9KIE emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

I started drinking them again, every other day, then daily. Now I am drinking 3 quarts a day. BUT they are pretty watered down. Another way to get my water in I suppose, but easier for me to go back to. I target a lower carb diet and still with doing this and eating I am staying under 80 net carbs. I shall see if this helps me get back on track and detox my naughty summer fun self emoticon

Gosh I wish this team would get fired up again. Someone needs to give this dying baby a few puffs of air before it dies LOL Perhaps when the summer runs out and folks are looking at doing what I am doing here, cleaning up my act.
It seems at the beginning of the New Year this place was crazy fun with so many people wanting the health benefits of green smoothies and weight loss. I am as guilty as the next for all the above remarks, being here and then falling away. Hopefully maybe we can get a few back and breath life back into the old girl :-)

I know there is a ton of information here, and I know greensmoothies are a wonderful health benefit for anyone. Sometimes I know when anything good is done in extremes no good becomes of it. But a green smoothie can fit into anyone's and every one's lifestyles; meat eaters, vegan, vegetarian, raw or high raw....it's all good.

ILoveDuane,
I think it's just about having fun and playing with your smoothies.

Today's smoothie I put a beet and its greens in, a Granny Smith apple, some pineapple, a cup of water, and a couple stalks of celery. Yummy to me!

A couple smoothies my kids like:
a banana, frozen strawberries, and orange juice (esp nice with a sore throat)
a banana, frozen berries, milk

I used to make green smoothies but haven't for awhile, favoring juicing lately. I would like to maybe alternate every other day. What is a good recipe to start with? I don't have a very good blender so I may have to wait until I get one -- I am asking for one for Christmas. I am interested in having my kids drink one or two a week as well (if I can afford it!).

Thanks for your reply. I'm using it only in my first pint. This is the 3rd or 4th day and other than a smoother smoothie and maybe a smoother exit, I haven't noticed any changes, but I wasn't expecting anything drastic. My confusion comes from a statement that says if it gets rained on it looses it's effectiveness when referencing insect control. I suppose the same would be true for parasite/worm control, should I unknowing have such critters inside me. The silica content will still be silica but without the sharp edges. I have time to do some more digging, and observing any changes, before I have decide to invest or not. SP has such a deep pool of diversified knowledge I though I would give it a shot.

I'm curious as to how the dehydrated smoothie came out!!

I was fortunate enough to be given a generous sample of Diatomaceous Earth. My interest was insect control but this is food grade so I did a little reading. As a result I added a tablespoon to this morning's pint Mason jar sized smoothie. (Redneck Shot Glass) It made the smoothie smoother and it didn't alter the taste much. Does anyone have experience using DE in smoothies? I'm interested in the effects of a high speed blender and if storing a blender full for later use takes anything away from it's benefits.

My daughter suggested using pint size mason jars. They are about one serving size, I can carry two or three in my soft sided lunch cooler and they are inexpensive. I think 12 with lids and rings were under $10. I cut some bubble wrap that's sticky on one side to wrap around them for a little "klutz protection". They work great for me.

I just started drinking one green smoothie a day as a way of breaking through my current plateau. I'm amazed at the difference already. I feel better and have lost 2 pounds w/o changing anything, just adding a smoothie each day. I guess it's my body getting rid of toxins and nasty stuff I've let build up inside me. I don't feel bloated like I normally do either. The great thing is I love drinking them...they really are delicious. My only issue is that I need to find something to transport them to work in because I like to drink them mid-morning to help me get through that part of my day. I'm so glad I found this team...lots of great information!

I've been having green smoothies for breakfast every morning after my walk. I am simply amazed as to how alive they make me fell. I feel the nutrition pouring through my old body invigorating my cells. I am awake and alert all day, thoughout the afternoon. And also, I am not hungry.
I'm so glad I joined this group and learned about them.

Pinkhairedmom, I have a friend with Crohn's and am excited to hear there might be an additional path for her to choose from. It can be so limiting. Thanks for the info.

The green smoothie movement is huge. You'd have to be deaf, dumb, and blind not to have at least heard of it. LOL It is truly an amazing drink and others are finding out by the droves daily.

Very cool. My crohn's doc is also very pro-green smoothie and green juice. He's also the one who pointed me to a great accupuncturist. Nice to know that some docs are embracing "alternative" medicine.

KP that is so cool!
GS are and have been one of the elements in the full package of what I am and have changed in my life. Juicing and wheat grass, eating clean have not only helped in all areas of my life, but have also given me the clarity to adapt to changes in my life's journey. Recently I was in an accident and the doctors told me that coming into this situation healthy was one of the best things I could have done for myself. Not only do we try and fix what has been wrong, but we are also need to be preparing ourselves for what could happen to us as well. In my case an accident and in general; there are many toxins out there that are hard to avoid and we need to build a great defense as well.

Yesterday I had a check up with my doctor and he was thrilled to see that I have lost 26 pounds since last time he saw me. He asked me how I did it and I told him that I cut my (regular, sugar-laden) soda consumption by about 90% and started drinking green smoothies twice a day. Then he says, "I drink green smoothies, too! What do you put in yours?" I thought that was so awesome!

No I was for sure talking about really crappy Mexican food carbs! LOL! Its all a learning experience for me. I have been eating loads of fresh raw fruits and veggie and when I then eat processed cooked unhealthy foods. I feel really really bad. Its really amazing how bad it makes me feel. I almost want to throw it all up just to get the fullness to go away. I never in a life time knew my body would reject the bad food once it was getting the good stuff LOL. Its like what in the world did you just feed me?!?

Yes!

Now when you are eating that meal is it cooked? Processed? Out of a box? Meat? Dairy? Organic? Commercial? Raw? Salad? How much fat? How much salt?

All these details make a great deal of difference.

When you state "carbs" you mean cooked/processed REFINED carbs, correct?

All carbs are not alike. We NEED carbs from fruit. We need LOTS of carbs each day. Carbs are our friends. Just not REFINED, cooked, processed de-natured carbohydrates that clog our arteries and turn into gunk in our bodies. Totally different.

After about 5 days though of drinking GS I notice that when I eat solid foods, I one don't need as much to get full and IF i over eat at all it feels like a 500lb brick in my stomach for what seems like hours! My head will hurt and my tummy will be very uncomfortable. Have any of you experienced this? And the more carb loaded the meal the worse it is. I know that is my body telling me to step away from the bad heavy foods and when eating solids to eat lighter. Its working b/c I never want to feel like this again. Its just amazing that it can have this big of an effect on my body in under a week.

Hello everyone. I'm new to the group and well really new to green smoothies as well. I have been doing it for 5 days now. Its amazing what has happened in just 5 days. I have alot of health issues, RA being a big one. I have had one foot that has been Swollen for I would say a year now. Its was always swollen some days worse then others but in just 5 days the swelling in my foot is GONE!! I mean really gone! It feels great. I have a ton of energy. I also suffered from IBS and painful constipation which again is GONE lol. I have been on a weight loss journey for about 6 months now and I'm down 50lbs I hope by adding this newest addition to my life that it will carry me on my way to a healthy 120lbs. I have also gotten my Husband and 9 year old to drink the smoothies which makes me happy.

Thanks Karen! I went to the health food store in Pocatello yesterday and she wanted an arm and a leg for a small amount of spirulina. I was just wondering if anyone knew of a good place on the net to shop.

Kim you dont need additional protein with your greens. They are enough in protein. As for supergreens the top ines are chlorella spirulina and klamath lakes blue green algae.
