My grandfather had a dog who would eat the bean shells when we would snap beans. I always thought that was funny. I know if I drop some food on the floor and there are veggies in it, the dogs will skip the veggies and eat the other good stuff.

Now that you mention it, we had a dog who used to go along the edge of the garden and pick the peas. Or maybe it was beans. Anyway, that outside row was always short of veggies. And I had a dog who liked veggies. I threw the scraps on the floor when I was cleaning veggies and she gobbled them up. But I think that's the exception, rather than the rule. Don't know how they felt about fruit.

Maw, I don't know about sweet potatoes, but one of my dogs is nuts for apples and blueberries. We had to move the blueberry bushes out of the fenced-in back yard because she would totally strip the bushes. Most dogs I've had would eat berries (blackberries and raspberries), picking them directly from the bush/vine. Dogs seem to be naturally fruit eaters.

As for the apples,we have a number of apple trees in the back yard, and an apple can hardly hit the ground before this dog is chomping it down. Fortunately, she doesn't seem to suffer any ill effects from it, because it would be very difficult to keep them away from her.

The owners of a couple of the dogs at our Read to the Dogs program at the library were talking about dog food. These are really serious dog people. One of them mentioned that the brand she likes came out with a new variety with blueberries and sweet potatoes, and I asked her why, since that's not what dogs evolved to eat. She said for the extra nutrition. And that rice was good for dogs but not wheat or corn. I left it at that.

Yes, a lot of the pet foods out there now have blueberries, sweet potatoes, etc in them. Things that appeal to people. Not thinking about the fact that cats and dogs have totally different dietary needs from humans!

Was it Sheba or something like that that advertised its "balanced" cat food - meat, rice and veggies. Or something like that. It seems like maybe they said something like we eat balanced meals and why should we deny our cats. Or at least that was the message. And is Beneful or something like that that gives the same message for dogs?

Always did think that was pretty dumb. There's no reason that dogs and cats should be eating our diets. Referring specifically to grains and veggies here.

Here is the link to the analysis of the foods:

I think that the animal food companies put that stuff in the treats and food in order to make it sound more appetizing to the humans that buying it and feeding it and will be smelling it. I know that I try to avoid buying the liver ones because it just sounds awful to me and I don't want my cat to eat it because of that... but I am trying to buy it more now because I know it is good for them even if it doesn't actually sound appetizing! I noticed that several of the high end low carb companies are putting sweet potatoes in the food and I am not happy about that. Considering just cooking for them every day because then I know where their food is coming from and that there isn't some sort of secret ingredient!

Someone posted a link to a list of cat food nutritionals just a couple of weeks back. I've been getting our guys 9 Lives Super Supper and Bacon & Liver Dinner and they are very low carb - and also low-fish, since one of our cats is mildly allergic. We're still adjusting to the feeding schedule, but Mr. Chub Chub has definitely shed some weight. He has hips again!

Unfortunately it did include carbs. Looking back I honestly can barely remember what I ate the past few days... I know I ate plenty of veggies but had some bad stuff like chips. So tired right now I can't even think. emoticon

If you gained back the weight while eating protein and fat that's not so bad. Much better than gaining it from eating carbs.

Now it would be back to eating less of the right things.

Now that my craving has been dealt with... I have 3 protein shakes with heavy cream, almond milk, and protein powder and some Fat Fast Shirataki Alfredo. I even brought me a ham steak with a couple sticks of cheese in case I get hungry. When I weighed this afternoon I had gained back almost all of my weight back in the past week... back to eating right!!

I eat the chili at Wendy's. When they offer the crackers with that I just turn it down, but I do ask for hot sauce.

I was making up treat toys for the shelter yesterday. I was given some kind of kibble, but don't remember what was in it. Also three bags of treats to distribute. One was apples and oatmeal. One was sweet potatoes and fish. And I don't remember what the other one was. Really? Dogs eat apples and sweet potatoes? Let alone oats and rice and barley and things like that.

I do give my foster cats the same food that the shelter gives them, because I don't have them long and changing food can cause problems. But if and when I have a pet of my own, I'll definitely be looking into more natural foods for them.

Exactly: most cat and dog foods that are dry contain grains or potato or rice. It's hard to find low carb food for pets. Even the diabetic foods have a lot of carbs. That's why I buy canned cat food with no wheat, potatoes, or rice. And it's regular name brand food, not high end food! But less than 10 carbs a servings. Just takes research and then reading labels.

Never thought about it until the cat tested high on glucose! Have since put the dogs on low carb, too.

If you look at the typical nutritional evaluation of the cat foods... they contain grains! As in... a LOT of grains. Most of the food is 50-70% grain. I myself buy my cats a grain free dry cat food that is $13 for 5lb bag and buy the grain free cat food, too. Two cats. 3 cans every two days. $1.19 a can. Totally worth it, though.

Had a bad night last night at work... so I went to Wendy's this morning and got me some chili since they serve it 24/7... I didn't realize it but I had been craving it for a week! I had been craving something and just couldn't tell what it was... So that hit the spot and I am ready to go back to my favorite lifestyle - LCHF!

Oh and I asked for extra crackers to give the hubby... They gave me 21 packs! emoticon

hi everybody,
my aunt just had to have her diabetic cat put to sleep. she was 19 yrs old and got cancer. she had to give her insulin 2x a day for the last 4 or 5 years. she hasn't been on a holiday in that long because she didn't have anyone else to give the cat her insulin shots.
i am trying to get her to come with us to Vegas in November. that woman deserves a holiday after all that time!
i just don't understand how cats get diabetes. they often only eat cat food. i know her cat absolutely only ate iams cat food. kitty was very picky. no treats of any kind. so, i feel only the pet food manufacturers can be blamed.

Gail -- She believed she could, so she did.

I'm buried in work and don't even know where to start. The new manager is making a difference - hold other people accountable for their parts in various processes and that will help me in the long run. Right now I just gotta cobble it all together on my own.

I spent a little quality time this morning working on checklists and agendas for a club meeting this weekend and I think I just bought myself some free time this weekend!

Happy Friday Eve!

I'd normally be looking forward to Friday, but it's Senior Recognition Night at the HS football game, so we'll be there from 4:30 to 11:30. Ugh. I like to zoom in at halftime to see the band, grab some food at the concession stand to support the Band Parents fund, and then go home until it's time to pick him up for the night, lol! Oh well, it's a whole day away and I have uglier fish to fry today. Back to work!

Happy Thursday! I also had a diabetic cat (he was 15) but he didn't do well with the shots. Missing him still.

I had a diabetic dog once that I had to give insulin shots. The funny thing was, because I fed her right after the shot, when I'd hold up the needle and ask her if she wanted her shot, she'd start dancing around in circles, all excited.

Morning!!

DH got home last night late. He was gone last week, home Friday and Sat and then left again. Was recruiting for work at two universities. Got home last night and that is it for recruiting. Will probably head out of town tomorrow to take care of our house in BR that we are trying to sell. Needs to cut the grass and do things around the house as he hasn't been there in a few weeks.

Pets are all doing well now. The cat with the UTI: no more messes! The cat with diabetes: still painfully thin. He's getting his glucose levels rechecked Monday. Hoping the low carb wet food diet will have brought his glucose levels down this month. I so do not want to have to give him insulin shots twice a day!! But if I must I will.

Still feeling good, no more lightheadedness!
