I have heard that even for 'ketosis breath,' drinking water, water and more water will help, if not completely eliminate it. The ketones will be eliminated in the urine and the entire body is flushed.

woubbie. i used to date a guy that smelled delicious, like fresh bread. i couldn't figure it out. he didn't even use deodorant. after a few months i figured out it was because he drank too much beer....but, i know lots of beer drinkers and no one else has ever smelled like fresh bread.

when i drink, i must smell like overripe apples, cuz, the only thing i like to drink is hard apple cider.

Creamed corn. I'll have to ponder that one!

My husband gets the fruity breath occasionally - sadly it's from drinking too much - and it always reminds me of overripe fruit.

Yes to all these answers. If it is the ketosis, then brushing won't explicitly get rid of the bad breath since it is coming from his lungs not his teeth/gums. The best I can suggest is to try to cover it up with mouthwash or chewing gum.

Strangely enough, my wife tells me that I have had breath that smells like creamed corn since starting to eat this way. I definitely brush my teeth more often because of it....probably a good thing anyway!

If it's the acetone breath then he's probably burning more fat than you (darn those guys!). Your body uses the ketones for fuel unless there are too many of them, then they get dumped in urine and breath. Literally breathing the fat away!

I must be doing something wrong, because I apparently don't have that problem--my fiance does, and we can't figure out why I don't.....we basically eat the same foods, except that I eat more egg salad.

It's a by product of ketosis. If it's fruity, then it's acetone, and is from a high level of ketosis, which means you're burning fat. If it's really toxic smelling then you're eating too much protein and are producing ammonia. Back off on the protein and up your fat and it should go away.

i remember in my 20's i had a lovely boyfriend who followed the atkins plan. he didn't have a weight problem, but, he was someone who had to watch those extra pounds. he could gain 20 pds over the winter when not working at construction if he wasn't careful.
anyway, it did give him bad breath. not all the time. but sometimes. i never had the heart to tell him. i remember when i read the atkins book and i read about that, i thought--that's why he has bad breath. it is a sad side effect of this diet.
me, i brush and floss all the time. brush at least 3 or 4 x a day. floss before bed. and chew gum. no one has said anything. i hope my breath is fine emoticon

I think what I've read is that the bad breath is due to ketosis, but I have no idea about the science behind it. I keep a big rubbermaid bottle of water with me at all times, I also chew gum and use a peppermint extract spray. By the way, congrats on your weight loss! You must be so proud of yourself!

I've seen posts about this but didn't pay attention and I just tried a search but it was overwhelming.

What's up with the bad breath and is it possible to get rid of it? UGH!!!
