Just posting here to finish out the month strong. I did the 31 pushups today, though I JUST finished them a few minutes ago! Had a really good last day of July, so I hope that sets the tone for August.

See you all in the next thread!!

I'm here, just checking in late due to a very full day! I did my push-ups and my jumping jacks today! And a dog walk. And my eating's been good. Can't believe July is over...

What? No one's posted yet today? Where is everyone?

Did my pushups for today - today! And did yesterday's yesterday, too. So what's the plan for August? I'm going to stick with the Whole30 thing, probably through the 24th, which would be 33 days. I'm heading out on the 25th for a long weekend with my FSIL and nieces and won't be worrying about Whole30 then. Nine days down, now, and I'm still not seeing anything. Except I had to let out the ties on my pants - they wouldn't go down over my hips. Not exactly the kind of change I was hoping for.

As Maw mentioned, the grassfed/organic meat thing isn't a Whole 30 requirement...ALL of the Paleo sites just recommend you do the best you can with the resources you have! Try to get leaner cuts if you're eating regular beef or chicken, since the fat is where the hormones and such end up being stored.....supplement with other sources of fat like coconut or avocado.

Happy to be back home after all the moving fun in Alabama.....two days of moving and setting up the new place (my girl has WAY too many clothes for one person!) and a day of cleaning the old place (her room mates were serious piglets) equals one exhausted mom! I made some easy stir fry meals for dinners, salads for lunches and scrambles for breakfast - so except for one sushi lunch demanded by DH - our meals didn't go too far off track. We certainly got a LOT of exercise to make up for it, though I did do my pushups, just modified them to balcony-rail pushups take a little strain off my really sore arms! Staying hydrated was the most difficult part of the weekend....I think it will take me a week to drink enough to make up for the deficit!

Looking forward to catching back up with all the news around here! Off to read some posts....

I didn't know that about the Whole 30 either. If I had either the time or the money I'd try it but both are in pitifully short supply around here.

Still trying to work those pushups into my daily routine. I actually managed 10 of them down in our Aerobics room this morning after I did my jumps, so that takes care of a third of them. Now I just have to figure out how to fit in another couple of segments, at least until I rebuild the strength to do them all in a row.

I'm up for the crunches for sure. I already started in a scattershot kind of way. Again, I just need to schedule a good time to get them done daily.

Wow, ladies. Maybe eventually we can call this challenge the Whole Body Whole 30! We've got some cardio/big leg muscle work, some upper body, and now some core. By the end of a year this will be quite some workout! Let's all get really fit and thin and write a book!

Maw, I think you just talked me out of trying the Whole30... I do not have the mental energy for anything that complicated right now! That's good to know ahead of a derailment... :)

I put my jumping jacks and my pushups on my To Do list in my planner! I list it as "JJ/PU so no one can read over my shoulder and laugh. :)

Did both this morning and did my cardio. Need to stretch, change into dog walking clothes and take my little beasts for their daily walk!

I need to get on a schedule to do my pushups, too. I split them in half and I have a feeling that I sometimes forget that I've done the second half one day so go ahead and do it again the next day. I know I'm current through yesterday, possibly have half of today's done, too. But since I don't know, I guess I'll have to do them again. Or not again, depending.

The first week of the Whole30 is over. No problems. No side effects. Which is good for not having bad side effects, but no good side effects yet either. My biggest regret about not eating something came yesterday. I got a big package of chicken thighs out of the freezer Saturday to thaw and cook on Sunday. I forgot that I'm not supposed to eat the fat of commercially raised animals! Not that fat is bad, but apparently there are lots of toxins and garbage in the fat of commercially raised animals. It's not technically a Whole30 thing, but it is a Paleo/Whole9 thing so I decided to go with it anyway. Not only did that mean that I wouldn't get to eat all that scrumptious skin, it wouldn't be there to keep the meat nice and juicy. Grrrr! And while I've seen recipes that call for wrapping thighs in bacon, my bacon has sugar in the cure so I couldn't do that, either. But then I remembered that I had seen them wrap lean meat in caul fat (lacy sheets of fat from somewhere around the innards of pigs) on Iron Chef America to keep it juicy and lucious, and I had some caul fat in the freezer. So I got out a package of caul fat (from an organic, pastured pig) and wrapped it around the skinned thighs and baked it. It was good that way. Wasn't as good as cooking the skin on the thighs and then pulling the skin off and making a meal of it, but it did make the thighs a lot better than they would have been if they had been cooked skinless.

Again in August sounds good to me. Crunches sound good, I think i will do plank instead. Start with 5seconds the first day and 5 seconds each day. unless some has another idea.
Or there's mountain climbers.

I like "Again in August"! I have been pretty good about the push-ups and jumping jacks and I think I'll add crunches to the mix (on my balance ball).

I'm off to do cardio, and then yesterday's AND today's jumping jacks and push-ups! Didn't get a check yesterday so I want one for today!!

How about "Again in August" since so many of us have had problems doing the pushups. Those who have been doing the pushups could add the jacks, too. And those who have been doing both can just keep adding another one of each every day!

Or something Olympicy?

I slept really well last night! At least, I did until the cat decided it was time for me to get up. At least she waited until about 6:30 today. As a result, I feel much better today. More energy, no headache, and my legs don't ache as bad as they did yesterday. And the day before.

Don't know if it's the Whole30. According to a timeline on the Whole9Life blog, I'm supposed to start feeling better about now. Could be the Whole30, but I think it's more likely that I've slept with the windows open for two nights now, and yesterday had the doors and windows open all day! And it's less humid inside. Ah, bliss! It's supposed to get a bit warmer today (I guess we say warmer if it only gets to the low 90s instead of the high 90s!). Not sure what the humidity is supposed to do. The dewpoint last night was in the 50s instead of the 70s so maybe it will stay dryish all day.

Did Friday's pushups yesterday. Will go as soon as I post this and do half of yesterday's. Right....now!

Glad it's a new week after the last one, I'm up 4.9 pounds I'm guessing it's water weight, hopefully it will be gone by the end of the week, I have a lot of push ups and jacks to catch up on. Monday was the last day I did any. Tomorrow I'll catch up.

Today's a re-grouping and de-cluttering day for me, so it's time to make my plans for next month.

I still did OK this month, even though my pushup challenge was pretty FAIL. I think I'm going to keep the same items on my list, but make a better plan of when to get them done. I never really scheduled the pushups or weights, so it was hit-or-miss as to whether they got done, and it was "miss" more often than not. I'm also going to figure out where to stick some cardio time. Most everything else is running on auto-pilot, so the time has come to add the missing links.

Have a great day, all!

Oops! Misread your post, Diane. I thought you had read the few of us who talked about Whole30 and wanted to join it. Do join us on Atkins. Doing Paleo and Atkins at the same time is no problem at all.

The power went out last night about 7:15 and didn't come back on until about 6:45 this morning. I think everything in the fridge and freezer are ok. Thinking about food is so wierd. Last night I was thinking that I should be eating some nuts or something. Not hungry, just should be eating something. I finally figured out that what I was really thinking was that since I couldn't have anything out of the freezer or fridge, I should have something out of the cupboard, instead. Which would have been right if it had been mealtime and/or I had been hungry, but not just because the power was out!

Day 5 down. The restaurant we went to for brunch apparently locks up all the lunch food and it is totally off limits until 11. So no salad, no salmon, no char-grilled chicken. They don't have hard boiled eggs. All the egg dishes are fried in butter and/or canola oil. After asking if I could have this or that and being told no, I finally said I'd just have water. The waitress said she'd see if she could get me just a small side salad, which she did. (And I mean small - a few pieces of lettuce, 2 cherry tomatoes, one slice of cucumber and about 1 tablespoon of shredded carrot!) With oil and vinegar. Olive oil, which is good, and balsamic vinegar - with added sugar! So I just had the small salad with some olive oil. Fortunately I'd had a cup of bone broth with gelatin and coconut milk and a hard boiled egg with mayo before I left. I was hungry by the time I got home for lunch!

Hi, Diane! Glad to have you along. Did you know that there's a Paleo team, too? They did a July Whole30, don't know if they're going to do an August one, too. Also, at Whole9life.com they're doing an August "official" Whole30. They're also offering a daily whole30 support program for $15. Not sure what that would be. It seems to be a new product. There's also a free forum over there just for Whole30. Just some ideas for extra support.

Didn't sleep well last night. Strange dreams. (Including being hurt and upset when a friend was handing out Christmas packages and was very careful to give the low fat/low calorie/vegetarian friend exactly what she could have, and gave me a tiny bag of steel cut oatmeal!) Woke up with a headache. Could be the detox kicking in. Or could just be that I didn't sleep very well last night and had strange dreams and woke up with a headache. (It does happen.) Probably more because the house has been shut up for so long with no fresh air and I'm a fresh air fanatic! I'd love to open all the doors and windows and let some fresh air in, but with lows at night in the high 70s and low 80s and humidity in the 90s, I keep them shut. And days aren't much better. But I think the weatherman said last night that we're supposed to be getting some drier air soon. I'd gladly have the windows open when it's in the 90s if the humidity was low!

I'm meeting some friends for brunch this morning. I had scheduled it before I started the Whole30. I've really studied the menu and I think I can get something ok to eat. The big question is what kind of fat they cook their eggs in. I think I'm going to see if I can get a salad with char-grilled chicken and an olive oil vinaigrette. I'm not sure I'm ready for a salad at 10 am, but so be it! And I was invited to a group get-together next month at a bbq joint. I just called and asked if I could get just plain meat with no rub or sauce, and was told that they cook the pulled pork plain. So it sounds like a big salad with pulled pork will be the way to go there. I've gotten used to figuring out how to eat low carb when eating out, but adding in the no dairy, no sweeteners, no seed oil, and no soy of any kind makes it harder. But doable! I can do it!

Got to go. I finally gave in and read The Hunger Games, which I had been avoiding since I had heard it was dark and gloomy. Yuck. I loved it, and managed to snag the second book at the library yesterday. Finished it last night, and now I want to see if the third book is available.

Have a great day everyone! And let's have fun with the Whole30, Diane! Anyone else want to join us?

Yay, Maw! How does it feel so far? Too soon to tell?

Woubbie, I think you have a very rich fantasy life... I suspect there's a lot going on inside your head that never sees the light of day!! And yet you'd probably look normal walking through a mall... LOL I want that app just to hear what you and Rhonda are talking about - but, alas, I have a Blackberry and I think they are app-challenged.

I'm doing wall pushups for this challenge, and that makes it pretty easy to whip out the day's requirement without getting down on the floor! I stand back as far as possible to make it more difficult. Do you think you'd be more likely to do them if you did wall or counter pushups??

I did my pushups and my jumping jacks for the day, but I skipped the extra cardio. Ran out of time and after the dog walk (in nice sunny weather!), I headed north to a client's office. She's my acupuncturist and we're trading services! :) That makes me happy since I don't have insurance right now!

yay, Woubbie! I hope you'll find the Zombs as fun as I do! AsColleen mentioned the other day, it works great for a walking workout too! and I often turn off the 'random' chases to just enjoy the story - so you could really listen to it anytime, even if you weren't working out! My coworkers were laughing at me today as I was rushing to get thru a stack of student files - they said I was working like zombies were chasing me, LOL

had some goat cheese tonight - my first dairy since finishing my Whole 30 a couple of weeks ago!! we'll see how I feel in the morning!

will be moving DD all weekend, so might not be online much - but I'll keep up with my pushups!!! xoxoxoxo

Did my pushups. Even accidentally did an extra one!

Day 4 of Whole30 completed successfully. I'm pretty sure I'm eating too much. Especially fat. One of the rules is no weighing or measuring, of food or of me. So no counting carbs, either. But everything is low carb anyway so it probably doesn't really matter. So far, I'm finding it very easy. No side effects, no hankerings after the dairy or the sweeteners, no wanting to get this over and get back to "normal" eating. I guess I'm still in the honeymoon phase.

About 4 this afternoon, weather.com said we had an 80% chance of rain at 8pm, 100% at 9pm, and 50% through the rest of the night. They were wrong. No rain yet and the best they can give us is a 25% chance sometime in the early morning. Rats. I tell ya, I'm a lot more concious of how I use (and waste) water!

Uh, oh. Where's Kris? Did I miss the memo and she's out of town?

Everyone's doing great!

Rhonda, I actually downloaded the Zombies, Run app even though I don't run, just cause it sounds like fun! Who knows, maybe one day I'll put on my headphones in the mall and try a Dead Rising (video game) scenario:

"Dead Rising follows the harrowing tale of Frank West, a freelance photojournalist after the scoop of a lifetime. In a small suburban town that's overrun by zombies, he escapes to the local shopping mall, thinking it will be safe. Now it's a standoff, with zombies unable to get Frank, but him unable to get out & escape. Fortunately, he's got an entire mall at his disposal. Utilize everything you can find to fight off the flesh-hungry mob and search for the truth behind the horrendous epidemic."

LOL! Sounds like fun!

I am still FAIL at the pushups, but I know why. I should have planned on modifying them further (I'm trying to do girlie pushups), because I still can't do more than 8-10 at a time, so I put them off or don't go back and finish. I also never established a routine time for doing them, so it's too easy to blow them off. I'll keep plugging away, though. Now that I know what's wrong I just have to fix it. And I'm definitely keeping them in the rotation (along with the jumps) for next month. Just have to keep building.

Speaking of next month.................................

Any ideas?

Go Maw! Only 27 to go!

I had a great run with the zombs this morning! Took a new turn and got a little lost, ended up adding an extra mile - lol!! I switched to a different pair of shoes and avoided the dreaded ankle cramp! coincidence?? I I remember that I didn't like those shoes before - because they seemed to give me a blister on my instep - but this time I just left the laces a little looser in the middle and they did just fine!

Super busy day ahead - gotta get some stuff done so I can be off Monday to recover from moving DD into her apartment this weekend! the new semester starts Aug 20 - so it's crunch time for trying to get all the students funded before the first day of class!!

Happy Thursday!!

Wow, Colleen, that's a lot to deal with all at once... Take one day at a time.

I am cooling off after doing 20 minutes on the ski machine, my pushups and my jumping jacks. Off to walk the dogs after I change clothes!

Morning everyone,

After my horrible day yesterday derailed me. I've decided I'm not going to let it continue. Ended up eating a bunch of stuff I shouldn't have but I'm back on track today. No Push up or Jacks yesterday I will catch them up today.

I won't have to go back to the island for a couple of weeks for the funeral, Which gives us a bit of time to figure out the money. Paying for two houses sucks at least in September we have someone renting the Island one so this will get better.

Hope everyone has a good day.

Colleen

Had to take my check back for yesterday. I keep putting off the pushups until too late in the day. I need to get these done at work, I think.

Only half a check for yesterday. I got my pushups done but I ate a cookie, so no check.

I'm so sorry, Colleen - I hope today is a little bit brighter for you...

Thanks for the encouraging news, Betty - I hope Catelyn's doc will say something similar! She's gotta start nursing school on August 12, doesn't have time to be down! Though I have read that the surgery is minimally invasive these days...so it shouldn't be too bad if it does end up going that way....glad I'm not stuck in Guam for all this, I must say!

pushups and jacks done with some extra stretching to ease sore muscles from yesterday's run.....another night of fitful sleep and weird dreams - I dreamt that DD's cat bit my cat's face off!?!? what the heck??

Happy Humpday!!

It's been a really hard day. Day started out with husband going to the dentist found out that to have his tooth removed ( surgery) it's going to cost $700 and only part of it is covered my our medical about $200 so were left planning the other 500.

Than my dad called and said my grandfather is in the hospital and really sick, So I decided to drive back home 7 hours and on the way back my father called me and told me he had passed away. At least we were only an hour into the drive. So now I'm waiting to find out when the funeral is. So I can drive back, but i have to go by myself becuase we can't afford for my husband to loe the pay at work for two days. It's been a crappy day.

Rhonda, My youngest daughter (49) has a hernia on her abdomen, it's been there for years and years - they just said "watch it", but it has never gotten worse or changed, so... nor does she have any lifting restrictions either. But one has to have them checked out by the doctor, then follow advice there.

I'm caught up on the pushups except for half of today's, which I WILL get done tonight!

Day 2 on Whole30 went well.

My farmer friend emailed to say that he was taking the pigs to the butcher tomorrow and I needed to call and say how I wanted it cut up. Turns out that all of the cures have sugar, so am getting the pork belly cut like bacon but not cured, and no hams. The only two kinds of sausage that don't have sugar (mostly dextrose) are Sweet Italian and chorizo (Mexican). Do you suppose it's just a coincidence that the only two without sugar are ethnic and not "American"? I'll drive down next week to pick it up.

Supposed to be 102 tomorrow. Ugh!

Go, Maw! I did indeed just complete a Whole 30 - giving up the dairy was tough! I find now, however, even though it's 'allowed' it's much less important to me than it used to be! I do a lot more 'stir fry' type recipes and a lot less casseroles....I'm sure it's better for me! It's much the same as when we gave up bread and such - you just have to get used to doing things a different way....good luck!

There's tons of info on the Whole9 website or forum for anyone interested in a Whole 30.....though their book "It Starts With Food" is definitely worth a look!

I really have to quit looking at hernia pics on webmd - yuck!

Maw, I'm looking forward to hearing about the next 30 days... I want to try it (someday) but I haven't gotten the book yet. I've grounded myself from anymore Amazon purchases for the time being! :)

Rhonda, I hope the 'alien' is insignificant and easily dealt with! Nice timing on her part, eh??

Did 15 minutes of cardio, all my pushups, all my jumping jacks, and a dog walk! Off to the dental client in a few minutes and then to my favorite client later. And then I come home to a textbook and a midterm!

Sounds like excellent timing on DD's part, Rhonda. I think I'd be suspicious if I were you!

I'm adding to my challenge for the rest of the month. In addition to the pushups (which I don't necessarily do on the right day, but I have been doing them), I started a Whole30 yesterday. That's a super strict Paleo program. You did it, didn't you, Rhonda? The big things, at least for me, are no dairy and no sweeteners. Zip. Nada. Zilch. None at all. But it's only for 30 days out of the rest of my life. I can do it!

You're also hilarious, Naypooie!

I'm glad you UNchoked, Kris - you're really doing great with your jumps!

my booty is sore after my zombie run this morning - the mission this morning was a little sad....and scary in the dark! got another little ankle cramp but worked it out with some stretches and kept going. It didn't come back this time! yay! Soon I'll need to look at getting some new shoes....

DD's doc thinks she has a hernia....there's a small, hard kind of a bulge on one side of her abdomen (I think it could also be an alien)......going to the surgeon with her on Aug 6 for a more thorough evaluation....yikes! will have to make sure she doesn't lift anything heavy for a while - which means I'll get even MORE exercise when we move her into the new apartment this weekend!

Nay, you're a genius! I'm going to get pizza makings and indulge without nary a crust in sight! I made a cheeseburger salad for dinner (ground beef, cheese, diced dill pickles, diced tomato, diced onion, mayo, and lettuce/fresh spinach), but why did it never occur to me to just make a dang pizza without the crust??!!

Pizza in a bowl. A smear of sauce, some cheese, favorite toppings, zap it til it melts.

Can't eat the crust if it doesn't exist.

I want pizza so bad, I'm trying not to cave in. Or if I do I'm going to try to only eat the toppings I've never been able to do it, not sure why it's so hard for me. I just really don't want to cook tonight I think is the problem. I'll see what happens.

Well I guess the gods are on my side my husband just told me he will be late tonight and I'm on my owe for dinner so I guess no pizza. So now I have to figure something out.

Raining, gray, and gloomy here... I did 15 minutes on my ski machine, did my push-ups, and did my jumping jacks. Now I need to suck it up, dress appropriately, and go walk the dogs. Rhonda, I slept weird too! I have the feeling I dreamed a lot but I can't remember anything - feels like I was really active all night. I have a lot to do today, but after getting that huge paper finished and turned in last night I just feel wiped out mentally. Maybe that dang paper was what I was working on in my sleep...???

Don't you hate when the computer loses your post right before you click Post Message?!?!? That's what I get for multi-tasking. I was talking to a Verizon rep in another window and lost my post.

I've been AWOL this weekend with driving chores and social obligations (yes, obligations, not fun). Yesterday was an all-Algebra marathon, though my elder son was doing the mentoring with the younger son, not me. I was mostly prodding them both to keep going, and smoothing frizzy feathers when they started burning out. It's still going to be a near thing for my son to finish before this weekend. Gonna be a nail biter....

I get extra points for eating lower calorie for 2 days and doing lots of household exercise, but still lose my checks for not doing the pushups or jacks. Weekends always are my downfall! Ah well, the beer's on track and the supplements too, so I'm not too upset. Tomorrow I'll be back at work and probably back on the rails.
