Thanks Truth! Catching this cold was not great but I agree that it didn't grab ahold of me as colds have in the past, though it's been while since I've had one. Actually I take that back, one of my earlier blog entries in January I blogged about starting a cold. I was reminded of the movie "The Devil Wears Prada" where Emily Blunts character says she's "one stomach flu away from her goal weight" such a funny movie. I'm looking forward to making the power cookies again in Cycle 2. Maybe I'll go back to journaling via the blogging area during cycle 2.
Cheers to the end of Cycle 1 everyone!

@Noe.... congrats on taking care of yourself with soup and some patience. I was going to say that i have noticed that colds do not grab hold of me the same way they used to... i am not as sick and i recover quicker. i am thinking this might be for you as well. i certainly hope so.

Day 17: It's going to be a good day, I feel a bit better.I made a simple delicious vegetable soup last night. I'm looking forward to making it again today. I'm sure once I finish my hot lemon water I'll be able to kick my self into gear. Planning to go to a zumba class today and being a bit more productive than I was yesterday. Have a great day everyone!

Day 16 -I'm feeling kinda disappointed today. Yesterday I was hoping to put off the start of a cold, but nooooo. I was sniffly and fighting a sore throat all day. It's still hanging on this morning but am feeling a bit better hopefully just a 24 hour thing. I didn't make great food choices yesterday as my head was foggy, I'm bummed that I'm feeling off my game, but such is life sometimes and that was yesterday.
Today I'm going to work through the fogginess and make cycle 1 choices that are also soothing for a cold. It's much simpler when you're feeling normal, but throw a cold and tom into the mix and that's just not fair. Anyway moving forward I'm gonna take it slow and easy (as best I can) today. Have a great day everyone!

Day 15: I usually love Mondays, I'm strange that way. Mondays always feel like a fresh start, a chance to breathe from the hecticness of the weekend. I try to arrange my Monday work schedule to catch up and look ahead. So.....17 days cycle 1 just about done, it's time to dig in and finish strong. Things seem to be going in the right direction, yay. Still keeping it simple and enjoying my meals and snacks. Still rolling along! Have a great day everyone!

Thanks Ladies!!.

Truly the first 15-20lbs was water weight. I went on Mirena about 6 mos ago to try and improve my periods. I noticed right away I was packing on weight with Mirena. Within months I was up aroudl 20 lbs. I thought maybe my body would adjust but it never did so I had it taken out last month. It took a few weeks and switching to low carbs (17dd) for my body to finally give up the bloat!!

While I know a lot of my loss was bloat I don't care, weight loss is weight loss. Now my body can start digging into fat loss.

I have a lot to lose. I'm taking it 20lbs at a time.

Msgypsy,
That is amazing! 26 pounds! You definitely need to proceed to C2 so you don't plateau but wow! maybe you should be telling me what to do, not the other way around!

Hi all. Just checking in. I'm beginning day 15 today. So far I am down 26lbs in c1. I'm sure my recent bout with a stomach bug contributed to that. I expect there may be some rebound from that.

Veterens--since I was off track for a few days due to illness, do you think I should start C1 again or pick up with C2 on Thursday?

I hope everyone has a great day.

I have a lot to lose. I'm taking it 20lbs at a time.

Day 14 for me as well. :) I did have a piece of special, dark chocolate yesterday that hubby brought me from my favourite shop far away from here. Worth it in my books.
Heading out for my long run in a few minutes. 4 miles, and there's still snow, but, the shoulders of the roads should be clear. emoticon

Day 14: Planning to chug along today. It feels really good to say that there are only 4 days left (counting today) of this cycle. I'm motivated to finish strong and see what my final numbers will be. Not sure what to expect, but like any situation I'm going to give it all I got because I don't want to look back and say "I should have done this" or "if only I had done that" or "Why did I do that?" Weekends can get a little wonky around here but I've learned some good skills on the plan to be more prepared for social food situations or stressful situations, by either having food prepared ahead of time or just some self talk to get me past the moments when I want to say "a handful of chocolate chip cookies won't matter". That's all for now! Time to start the day.
Have a great day everyone!

Day 12: I think that's right. I should grab my journal to be sure. Time flies when you're having fun. I can't believe it's been 12 days since our vacation. Cycle 1 is feeling more like a habit now, the afternoons have been much easier lately. Focusing on my theme of the actions I take now will dictate where I will be in the summer has helped me get through those bewitching hours of 4-7. Also reminding myself that routines change alot around here during the summer so I need to take advantage of this time during the school year to stay on plan so these habits stick through the summer. Planning for a nice dog walk today and may need to supplement the fridge a bit with more protein choices, I think I can use what I have through Sunday. I just have one more work deadline that hopefully won't stress me out too much this weekend.
Have a great day everyone!!

Day 11: My job today is to adhere to a winning pattern of action that I know will produce results if I follow it consistently." (Hussmanfitness.org) via BytheGrace and "I can do anything for 7 days" via Gabby. Keeping my head in this, it's tough not to look at the scale because I think I'm going to see the quick reward of a low number, especially since I've been eating well and getting some fitness in. But of course my tom is in the mix as well and I know how that can mess up the numbers , so just as well that I keep my focus on my actions. Every action I take now will prepare me for the results I want for myself in the summer. Keeping meals simple and easy today and no physical fitness planned. It will be a busy day wrapping up some work commitments, looking forward to finishing that all up. Have a great day everyone!

I felt like checking in this pm. Started feeling sluggish this afternoon (a zumba class and a weight training class in the am can do that to a person, what was I thinking?) Anyway I'm glad I did it but now its the pm and I'm wondering why I'm so pooped...duh. I've got to remember to drink water. I did at the gym but forgot the rest of the day. I just finished a glass and that definitely helped. Should be a mellow evening tonight, which I am going to relish as they are few and far between.
Sorry to see some aren't feeling well, my DH is just getting over a yucky cold, not fun. Much better to do what is best to recover.
Take care everyone! Make each day count!

Just started today. So I'm at C1D1. So far I've stuck to the plan. Still learning the plan. For breakfast I had my lemon water, 6 oz yogurt, orange (mid morning snack), green tea, Lunch was turkey burger and a large salad with iceberg lettuce mix with carrots and cabbage added broccoli and cauliflower, green tea. Had an apple for afternoon snack before 2 pm. I think I'm going to fix a chicken breast for supper and saute an onion and mushrooms for supper. Maybe some green beans. And then my last snack will be yogurt again.

I was dieting before this and I'm use to doing at least 30 minutes of exercise. I did my Just Dance 3 wii game for 20 minutes.

Looking for some good results. I've been at a 2 pound up 2 pound down cycle for a few years. Hoping this diet will give me the jumpstart I need.

Hi all. I hope everyone is well. I have a terrible stomach bug of some kind. I had to break C1 because I can't stomach anything right not but some crackers and dry toast and a little tea. I hope this passes quickly and doesn't do too much damage. I was chugging along so well in C1. Oh well, you never know what kind of curve ball may come your way.

@BytheGrace Thanks for your comment, perfect words for me to read. Also thanks for taking up one of the leader roles, you"ll be great and it's much appreciated. Thanks to all the leaders!
Day 10: Nothing new to say today, just keeping myself accountable by checking in here. Off to an am zumba class (the best one is wed) and I might have time to stay later for a weight training class afterwards if I have the energy...so in order to have the energy I best start making a healthy breakfast now.
Have a great day everyone!!

Today is D2 of C1 and I feel much better than I did yesterday. I'm not nearly as sluggish. I did not weigh myself this morning. In the past I have weighed myself daily, but found that it determined my feelings for the day. I'm going to try to resist and weigh myself once a week. I'm hoping a dramatic loss will be an extreme motivator.

Day 9: Well I've lost 2 of the 4 lb vacation gain so that's good but I was hopeful for more. I'm feeling more toned around my middle so that's good too. I'm enjoying my meals and I'm learning to make healthier choices when I'm craving sweets. So lot's of good things happening. Darn that number on the scale though. Not gonna lie, it still bugs me that it's not moving as much as I'd like.....but I understand that it's not the only measure of being fit and healthy, but still it would be nice to see...and tom is around the corner too:-( Okay thanks for letting me get that bit of whining out I feel much better. Just going to keep doing what I'm doing... I think I'm doing the right things and I like what I'm doing so why would I let a number derail me.

I'm really sluggish today too. This is actually the first day I have felt this way...I feel like i could have curled up and gone to sleep at like 6oclock tonight. I actually forced myself to do Couch to 5K today but my feet felt like they had lead in them. For me, I am hoping it is just the rainy weather and tomorrow I will be up again.

Drink tons of water to help flush toxins maybe...then you will be up and down so much to the restroom that your movement increases which, in turn, makes you more alert and less sluggish?

Hopefully you will only have to go through detox like this just once...(I continue to do C1 each round without detox symptoms, but everyone seems to be different).

Be hopeful...be strong...it will only be for a relatively short period and you will feel fabulous...we CAN do hard things! emoticon

@Sam - Take a nap if you can. Otherwise throw water on your face and put on some good smelling lotion to get the blood circulating. Eating something crunchy or chewing some gum also can get you more alert. Plan to get to bed early if you can. But basically these are the kind of things to work through and see what works best for you.

Does anyone have any tips for feeling sluggish? I know it's because I am detoxing from my C1 restart. I feel like I could put my head down and go to sleep right now. Everything feels like such an effort. UGH!

@Gabby--The 18 lbs is from my first 7 days on the 17DD. I was really retaining alot of water. I just couldn't seem to flush it out. The 17dd did the trick. I don't expect losses like that after this week. I wish!!

Day 8*: Not looking at the scale was really helpful yesterday. I don't know why though. Maybe it was because I was focused more on truly eating healthy and not "what I can get away with" if I had seen a loss or skipping a meal if I had seen a gain. Hmmmm a little self psycho analysis going on here but that kinda makes sense. Usually I'm so fixated about getting on the scale daily to see what the number will be. I understand that it's good to keep aware of the number but for me on a daily basis I think messes with my focus. I'm going to get on the scale weekly on Tuesday mornings from now on. So today I'm going to just keep doing what I'm doing. I enjoy the meals and they are all very satisfying and simple. That's another thing that's important to me is keeping this plan simple.
Another walk today and a pm kickbox class.
Have a great day everyone!!

@RBM - woohoo for saying no and better yet for not indulging in something because you felt deprived and sorry for yourself about missing a good time friday night. I have a tendency to do that! C1D7 for me....haven't weighed myself, and I won't. I am running/participating in a Weight loss group/competition, and we weigh-in on Wednesday nights.
Feeling pretty good. This week will be tough. Hubby is away, and I need to bake for the school bake sale, enough for the 3 kids to each donate something. Ugh....I love to bake, and not to toot my own horn, I am good at it. emoticon I'll do the best I can.

I forgot to add.....I said "NO" on Friday night. It was a girls' night out, my very good friends....snack, drinks and dancing....I stayed home, had a hot lemon water and my yogurt, and went to bed. I feel a little blue about missing it, because they had a fantastic night. On the whole though, I'm glad I stayed home. This round of competition is only 10 weeks, and my half marathon is in about 11 weeks...eye on the prize.

Day 7: I'm not getting on the scale today. It really doesn't matter what it says because I know I stuck to plan very well yesterday, but I also know if I get on and I see a change up or down or 0 that will affect my choices for today. Potentially seeing that I may be down a pound is all the excuse I need to "reward" myself with a handful of chips,sweet etc...you get the idea. I'm still working with that concept of "reward" I have to continually remind myself that a reward doesn't have to apply to a food item. I'm getting there but those thoughts still sneak in.
I'm loving that lemon squeezer, again why didn't I buy that sooner :-)
The sunday zumba person is too low energy for me and it's such a pretty day today so I'm going to go for an extra long walk/jog with the dog today instead. Coming to the end of the chicken soup today, fridge looks pretty well stocked for healthy cycle 1 choices. That's about it for me. Have a great day everyone!
@Gabby yes...you are on track so keep on keeping on....we all go through those moments where we're a little off. We just have to pick up where we are and move forward......and if you really did throw the scale out the window that is a 3-5 lb loss right there.

I haven't lost in 4 days (C1 D7) and it's because of cheese. I have had one (or 2) string cheese per day and have been using full fat shredded cheese because I had a big bag from BJ's and didn't want to waste it (I didn't want to stick it in the freezer either). I didn't think that it would matter that much but it does. Save the cheese for C3 and only use FF shredded in C1 (but you can use regular parmesan).

B=? not hungry and it's already 10:30 a.m. - not good
L=?
D=?
No appetite, no planning doesn't bode welI for the day. I think I'm bummed about not losing more and that's why I should only weigh myself once a week. If I don't lose I get discouraged and want to go off the diet, even though I have been on this 4x before and know from experience that the weight fluctuates upo and down and the loss shows up after 17 days. Besides I didn't weigh myself on day one just on day 3 so I could have lost more than 3 lbs. Even so 3lbs per week isn't bad gotta put it in perspective. I usually lose 10 lbs in c1 so I'm still on track.

emoticon That's a scale being thrown out the window!!

The 2Tbls of evoo can be cooked in things right? I used it on my roasted veggies. Or should it be more like in a salad dressing type thing?

@mom2 - Sounds like you're doing great. I remember what it was like to work shift work like that and it's not easy eating healthy but it sounds like you have a good plan. Make sure that you add your 2 Tbl of EVOO because that curbs hunger too.

I was really hungry for some reason today too (D6). 8:30pm and I had a salad - better than the alternative :)
B=omelet
L=smoothie

Cy1 day 9 moving right along and doing well. I did go out with a resident at work last night to a frozen yogurt place and had sugar free frozen yogurt...it was yummy!!! I worked an 18hour shift and tend to snack to stay awake. I brought fruits/veggies...more fruits than veggies this time for some reason and not enough protein. I was hungry every 1 1/2hours for a snack. I will bring more veggies and protein for my next shift which is Tuesday. Just 9 days ago those snacks would have been cookies, cake, candy, potato chips so I'll take it!!! My meals and snacks overnight were...chicken stirfry, eggs with veggies (that was the residents dinner..breakfast for dinner with omelets), sugar free frozen yogurt, baby carrots, two clementines, a baked apple with truvia and cinnamon, turkey breast, greek yogurt with blueberries, grapes on the way home...so this is over a 17hour period. I'm happy with my choices. Woke up this afternoon and had a greek yogurt with blueberries then supper was grilled chicken and roasted veggies. Ate and hour and a half ago and hungry again...probably will eat some grape tomatoes and an activia yogurt with cinnamon before bed. I did a 20min walk/run and about to do some wii dance with the kids. I think that my metabolism really jumpstarts when I start eating right. I just need to eat when I am hungry and choose protein and veggies for those and not worry about just the breakfast lunch dinner thing.

I am ready to start over. I just got back from vacation. I tried to eat the best I could, but there was a lot of eating out and tropical drinks. My boyfriend is going to join me this time on the journey. He wants to get "beach ready" too! I love reading everyone's posts. It makes me feel like I'm not alone in this and that I'm not the only one with the same challenges. I can't wait for this fresh start!

@Noe - Did you eat the bun? Sounds like you have the right idea for dealing with those triggers but I don't think tea would have satisfied you. A compliant snack would have. Even if you eat an extra yogurt or have fruit after 2pm it's better than going off completely. I've been eating a salad at night around 7 or 8pm. Sounds weird to eat a salad at night but all that crunching ( I add a lot of different vegetables), satisfies my desire for a late snack.
I break the mantra up into smaller chunks like - "I can do anything for 7 days" sometimes even "I can do anything for 1 day" LOL!

Day6: Chicken soup was great yesterday I'm glad to have leftovers today. Plan is to enjoy a berry smoothie and some egg whites for breakfast then go to an am kickboxing class. I finally bought one of those lemon squeezers, boy what a difference that makes for getting the lemon juice out. It was quite the morning workout squeezing the lemons myself...no more... I"ll have to come up with some other strength training method.
Bummed that I couldn't pass up a late night hamburger with the kids yesterday, there was just no fighting it. It was one of those food bonding situations that I enjoy periodically with friends and family. I realize these are the situations that keep me in maintenance mode......I'm still learning what my triggers are and still need to work on how to deal with these moments when they arise. I should have just made some tea. "IT'S ONLY 17 DAYS" ....that is going to to be my mantra during this cycle (and however many other cycles I need to be on before the 4th one), saying NO to a late night snack now means I can stay YES to a late night snack sooner when I've reached my goal which I'm so close to. Go me! Now it's only 12 more days.
Have a great day everyone!

@Mom2 - Try a protein shake if you're hungry, but are you drinking all the water? Sometimes we think we're hungry when we just need hydration. Also make sure you have the 2 Tbls of EVOO it also curbs hunger.

@Sharon - thank you very much but I'm already constipated! I have been taking a fiber supplement before 2 of my meals but it hasn't helped. I'll try prunes today. I forgot about them. I know that there's not a lot of waste with what we're eating but I'm eating so many vegetables there should be something going through LOL!

@Noe - sounds good! I think that Linda does hers in the crockpot all the time.

I just put a big pack of skinless chicken thighs in the slow cooker with Bavarian sauerkraut, bay leaves, a couple of allspice and a splash of white wine. That ought to get me going if you know what I mean!

L=prune whip yogurt

Plan today is to make the 17dd chicken soup to have on hand over the weekend. It's supposed to be sunny this weekend, but that soup is really good and it helps to have easy things to grab during the weekends. I think I'm going to do it in the crockpot this time.
I forgot to buy onions on my last grocery shop......(I was wondering why dinner was hard for me yesterday). So I'll make a quick stop to pick up onions and cabbage. It's gonna be good!!

Ate garlic butter fish with roasted asparagus and roasted cabbage for dinner. I was hungry again 2hours later. I just ate some cauliflower popcorn (yum) but wanting the sweet taste. I had dried some carrots a few days ago so I sprinkled them with cinnamon and a truvia packet...helping a bit.

@Millie, i CLEARLY remember day 3 of cycle 1 when i started. i was feeling so hungry, so sick, so in pain... i came on line (and was told about the protein). i was a vegetarian so no fish chicken etc. but..... i started the unsweetened protein powder (mine is rice protein) in unsweetened almond milk. it did the trick. i got through the 3third day and night. and day 4 was so much better. i was still so very fatigued and not very strong but i just knew i had hit a very very healthy path and this wonderful group.

stick with it. you will be through the hardest very soon. and then just need your resolve to make it through day 17 and then cycle 2 will feel like heaven.

@Gabby.... i am so very proud of you 100% compliant. You ROCK, my friend. emoticon

PLAN AHEAD TIP: It takes just as much effort to make 2 lbs of turkey taco meat as it does 1 lb., so make more and freeze the rest in portion sizes for a quick salad .

I even batch cook 6 lbs of ground turkey in my slow cooker seasoned with only a little chicken broth, and chopped onion. Then I divide it up and add spices later depending on what I want to use it for.

OK all you ole' pros - any other tips for the Newbies? Newbies don't forget there is a whole section for tips and a entire forum for recipes.

@Millie - hang in there! Those symptoms are proof that the way you were eating before was not healthy. Everything you described means the diet is cleansing your body of toxins. Toxins build up in our fat cells and when we detox with clean foods, they are released faster than our liver can process them. I don't like fish either - mainly because of all the pollutants like mercury and farm raised fish is worse because it has antibiotics in it. The only fish I eat occasionally is wild caught Alaskan salmon. Beef isn't allowed because of the growth hormones and antibiotics added. Same thing with pork.

Your protein choices are limited for just 14 more days. Make some soups. I eat 2-3 eggs per day and my cholesterol was actually lower after being on this. So add an egg if you want to. Use SF protein powder (sweetned with Stevia) and make skakes. Try turkey taco meat. What vegetables are you missing? Most are allowed.

Watch fatloser.com videos for motivation. He's self-aggrandizing but very very motivating.

You can do anything for 14 days!!

Eeek! D1 and D2 were fine. D3 is NOT FUN. Headache, shaky, getting cranky, hungry, but turned off by the idea of the available proteins and veggies. Part of my problem is that I don't really like fish and the C1 proteins took about 2 days to leave me bored, bored, bored. Various recipes, herbs, condiments etc won't help. I know how to cook and chicken is still chicken and I say "eh." Now, I would happily eat far more eggs and yogurt than is allowed, but I understand why eggs are limited and I suppose there must be reasons why I can't just have some more lovely plain Greek yogurt. The carbs that naturally occur in the milk, I guess.

Hungry. Cranky.

Hopefully this will pass soon.

OTOH, I'm down almost 3 pounds and I'm not cheating at all, so there is that.

Welcome Mom2! Ummm you were up a pound today and didn't you say that you had restaurant chicken wings last night? I'd say there's definitely a connection there LOL! Probably sodium. You should never be hungry on this diet. If you're eating enough protein I don't know why you are. Why don't you start logging your daily menus here - it helps!

I should caution that it's not a good idea to weigh yourself every day on this diet. Your weight is going to fluctuate quite a bit. Especially towards the end of C1 and all through C2. I put my scale in the basement so I woulnd' bew tempted. I'm the type of person who wants to give up if I gain back a few pounds or reward myself with a food treat if I lose so the scale is not my friend.
Clothes fitting better like Gypsy said, is a much better barometer of success! WooHoo!

You don't need 1200 calories on this diet!! Especially in C1 you are eating a very nutrient dense diet. People could eat 5000 calories a day and still be hungry constantly if it was all fast food crap. True hunger is the signal that you need to eat more (as opposed to cravings). Sometimes you think you're hungry when you're just bored or feeling some other emotion.
I average between 700-900 calories a day on C1 after the first few days.

Hi all. Just checking in. I woke up ravenous this morning. I ate some chicken and feel better now. I got a nice surprise this morning when I tried on a pair of pants that last week made me feel like a stuffed sausage. This morning they fit perfectly. What a difference a few days can make.

I hope everyone has a great day today!!

I have a lot to lose. I'm taking it 20lbs at a time.

It's going to be a busy day today so I'm getting ready by packing my lunch, snacks and making a plan for dinner. Right now I'm going to have a leisurely breakfast before the "races" begin. I'm looking forward to going to a Zumba class tonight. Have a great day everyone!!

Hey! I 'm new here. I started the 17 dd on Friday 4/13 so on Day 6 today. Doing good so far. Lost 7lbs already! I am hungry tho :( It's not that I am not getting enough to eat but that I eat and in 1 1/2hrs I am hungry again. So I try to eat my unlimited veggies and protein. I also have not been exercising yet. Hopefully I can get a good groove with exercising as well and being a bit more creative with my food choices.

Oh and I wanted to add that I craved sugar the first few days but have done great sense then. I even went out to dinner tonight with the fam and instead of eating pizza with them, I ate a salad with oil and vinegar and a few chicken wings (aren't 100% on the plan but better than pizza :) )

@Gabby: Thanks,vacation was good. We visited family. Since I had already lost 10lbs since last I saw them (thanks to 17dd) I didn't want to be all "diety" while on vacation my family likes to cook and snack and I felt it would be rude declining certain foods or not taking a 2nd serving therefore the extra 4 lbs. I watched what I ate when I could, and I have definitely learned some healthier habits especially at the "all you can eat" breakfast buffets. I've realized that I won't starve if I start the day with a healthy breakfast of fruit,eggwhites, whole wheat toast and green tea. In the past I felt I had to take advantage of everything presented. I had success with the 17 dd before so I felt pretty confident that I could come home and get back on plan and knock off the 4 lbs at the least. We shall see :-)

C1D2. I can't believe I only at 1200 calories yesterday and wasn't ready to eat the sofa.

I thought the hard thing would be resisting the carb heavy meals, a muffin for breakfast or a plate of pasta for dinner, not that those wouldn't be lovely, but it turns out it's the tiny little temptations, the things I could probably actually have without it making much of a caloric difference, that are really tough. I have a morning Starbucks latte habit and it was no real problem to look at the pastry case, say "nope, not on the diet, had my yogurt" and just keep going. (Although we'll see just how easy it still is in a week or two.) But I just got my son some popcorn for a snack and I would have loved a couple of kernels. Not the whole bowl, just a bite for the taste. THAT was hard to skip. Weird.

And I know there's the 3 bites of dessert thing and I could do that. I could have just a couple of pieces of popcorn and walk away if I told myself that's what I'm going to do. But I'm really trying to break the carb habit and I think it's best if I really comply.
