@Sara - I don't think you should do C2 over again. You need to follow cycles in order and move on to C3 even though Atkins bars are not acceptable 17DD cheats LOL! That oatmeal could have done you in. Some people get cravings and hunger back when they eat it. Buy some gluten free oatmeal and see if that helps you avoid cheats.

Well... I'm kind of in agreement with some of the other C2'ers... I feel like it's harder than C1! I've been taking too many liberties. The Fatloser.com guy says "cheat with something acceptable in your diet", so.. I've "cheated with eating an atkins bar, or bluebunny s.f. icecream bar. Not the end of the world, but definitly NOT C2 worthy - so really it wasn't even an "acceptable cheat".

The best part of C2 is my oatmeal for breakfast. Worst part is controlling the rest. haha. I started C2 over today... with the correct on/off cycle. That part got totally messed up for me. I still lost weight, but I know I wasn't doing my best, and could have lost more!

Today I'm on track. My "sweet" at lunch was yogurt & fresh frozen MI blueberries. YUMMERS!!

@GABBY: You will still be on the other lists, right? Or you could stay here, I don't think anyone is keeping track of everyone else's progress (in terms of which cycle they are on)!

I am so impressed with your motivation and perseverance to be on the fourth or fifth round. You are an inspiration to all of us newbies to the 17DD.

For those of you still hanging in there I am sorry to say that I am leaving you. I have to do a restart. I don't know what happened when I finished C1 - I think I went right to C3! This is my 4th or 5th round and I got lazy and lost motivation.

I will still check in here to see how you are all doing!

@fabby - sounds like you're right on for what you're eating. The only thing I would suggest is to google gluten and avoid anything with gluten in it. A person doesn't have to have celiac disease to have a sensitivity. I don't lose weight when I eat gluten even though I'm low on calories. I think it has to do with inflammation. I bought Bob's Red Mill GF oatmeal.
I love a poached egg on FF refried beans with salsa and FF shredded cheddar (or lowfat cheddar)

FABBYMAY: I was going to ask you about the exercise.... how much have you been doing? I've found that sometimes when I exercise more (either time-wise or exertion-wise) that it has tended to stop or slow my weight loss. I think our body tries to compensate. Maybe if you just scale back the amount you're doing for a week or so you'll see some results...

@GABBY: Thanks for the goodie! I haven't been back to post today because even though it was -45 degrees today (yes, MINUS), I still had to go grocery shopping, take my daughter to ballet, etc. etc. Now I have a little downtime.

I track my food and fitness on SP and usually don't have enough time left in the day to also write what I eat here, but here's a sample for the last two days:

Yesterday (C2) - oatmeal with a serving whey protein powder for breakfast, ff plain greek yogurt w/ mixed berries for snack, salsa chicken and 1/2 cup brown rice for lunch, Asian chicken soup (homemade with ff, less sodium chicken broth, chicken breast, garlic, ginger, napa cabbage, shredded cabbage, cilantro) for dinner.

Today (C1) - 2 eggs scrambled with spinach for breakfast, ff greek yogurt for snack, apple + leftover Asian soup for lunch, baked cod and broccoli for dinner.

I also decided to take today off from exercise although it was really hard to do so. I am wondering if I was working out too much for too few calories. I think I would have been a survivor in the Donner party - my body knows how to conserve!

I am going to just hang in there and see what happens, despite being so discouraged by the scale. Tomorrow I am going to try to skip the oatmeal and have something else for breakfast (ff refried beans) to see what happens if I cut out the oatmeal. I will try taking my measurements to see what has happened there too. Thanks for the support and suggestions everyone!

@Fabby - it's hard to offer advice when we don't know what you're eating. That's why I always recommend that people log their food here. Not the amounts, just what they ate when they ate it. If you're eating your starches every other day and before 2 pm I don't understand why you're up 5 lbs. That store bought hummus could have a lot of sodium. I don't lose when I eat oatmeal or anything with wheat. I hate to harp on this but you could also have a sensitivity to gluten too. You also have to watch portion control even for protein in C2 and C3.

I remember that on C2 the first time I went up and down on the scale and almost gave up. Just wait until the end of the cycle but it's too bad that you didn't take your measurements.
Your body could be trying to stay at your setpoing like someone else mentioned. Just hang in there.

Why don't you log your food for the last couple of days?

So my trip went pretty well. I did have a few c2 unapproved foods/beverages, but only very small portions. (This is a change for me because usually if I fall off the wagon I fall really hard.) I had one glass of wine and a few bites of cupcake. The next day I had a few almonds with breakfast & 1/2 cup of fruit sorbet at lunch. Other than that I stayed on track. My hosts made a lovely steak with a green salad made with olive oil & balsamic. At my grandparents there was a big salad, chicken breast with a dijon sauce and peas. Lots of fruit for breakfast.
TOM is here so I am not sure if this caused a gain or not. Just in case, I am going to do 2 accelerate days in a row to compensate, then finish up C2.

Fabbymay: I agree that it probably has more to do with water weight/bloat than anything. Low carb diets can have a diueretic (sp?) effect, making you lose a lot of water and adding back in some carbs could throw that off. I agree that it is not a true gain & that you should just keep on trucking -- but also watch that sodium and make sure you are getting in your water.

Fabbymay,
I am not an expert here, as I am in the same place as you in the timeline. However I just wanted to ask if you have been watching your salt. You very likely could not have gained a real 4 lbs as you would have needed to take in more then 12000 more calories then your body burns. So it is likely, blote from something.

Another possibliity, is your body is resetting itself. Sometimes when we make changes to our bodies too quick, they don't seem to want to keep up. You body may have decided to just hold on to something there in order to stabilize itself, because it thought it was melting away. If that is the case, then all you would have to do is stay the course, go on as usual and your body will realise, you have no intention of starving it to death and it will release that extra and move forward.

In eather case, maybe try to drink more water, even if you are already drinking all the water listed, it wouldn't hurt to try to get in an extra glass or two, in order to flush things out.

hopefully that helps and I am sure someone with more experience will pop in with some other ideas.

I know its frustrating, hopefully things turn for you very soon.

i am feeling really down today. I did great on C1. Then I started C2 and amped up my exercise. The first week of C2 I weighed myself and was shocked that I went up 4 pounds. I thought it was a fluke so I powered on and didn't weigh myself until today. I was up another 1.5 pounds. I really don't get it, and I feel like I have been working my butt off on this plan and on getting back into shape. I have tried different things for my carbs, including brown rice, oatmeal, hummus, and sweet potato. No matter what the carbs are, such small portion sizes shouldn't cause such a big gain!

I don't believe it can be muscles either, because I focus mostly on walking. I don't have a TOM. I have a few more days left of C2 and I am really afraid of going on to C3 given what is happening. And although I haven't taken my measurements, I can't say my clothes are fitting any looser,

Any suggestions?

@Bonnie - definitely skip the oatmeal! You (like me) may be gluten sensitive. I gain weight when I eat gluten even if I'm under 1200 calories. I'd also substitute the white potato for a yam or best yet eat legumes i.e. beans!

And - hang in there!

Gabby,
I am on C2D9 and have gained 1lb, No more or less. I know I have been lax with the exercise,but I have been strict with the diet. (Even passed on cake at a wedding last weekend)
When I can have carbs, I usually have potato for lunch and oatmeal for breakfast. I am really getting frustrated. Any Ideas????

Well as it turns out I will only have to deal with 3 meals while I'm gone. Tonight's dinner will be steak, baked potato and salad. I might skip the potato or have a bit as it is OK in cycle 2, just not so late in the day. Breakfast tomorrow will probably be fruit and yogurt.. will likely pass on toast/bread. Not sure about lunch on Saturday. Going to my grandparents' retirement community to eat. They have their large meal at lunchtime so I will probably be able to fill up on salad & meat & veggies and skip the starches.

I might have a glass of wine tonight. I know it is technically not cool on cycle 2, but I have completely abstained since Christmas Eve. And isn't it on the PMS exception? LOL I'm kidding I know it's not... but I wish it was, since I get kinda cranky during this time...

I'll let you know how it goes.

Just watch portion sizes and when you have control over what you are eating, make good decisions. I would bring yogurt and fruit and just say you didn't want them to spoil while you were gone. I would only go to c1 if I gained. Otherwise I'd go continue where I left off.

@Emily - It's not rude if you ask tell them you're on a diet for your health and ask them what they're serving. Explain that they don't have to fix anything special because you can bring some food with you like yogurt and fruit. You can have pretty much everything except wheat on C2 anyway. Life happens though and I'm sure you'll make good choices. You can always go back to C1 for a couple of days when you get back.

KITSFOCUSED: Keep up the great work! That's great about getting in all that exercise. I do Zumba several times per week and love it!

As for me... I'm finding Cycle 2 a bit more challenging now that my TOM is approaching. I am somewhat following the PMS exception section. (Mainly I have added some chocolate.) I have gotten a bit sloppy with BLTs (bite licks and tastes) of unapproved foods and need to stop that! I was really good about sticking to the plan to a T in cycle one... now it seems harder...

Also I'm going to visit relatives this weekend and probably will not be able to stick to cycle 2 exactly. I don't want people to have to make special food for me and I don't want to be rude to my hosts. What should I do? Perhaps I should switch to Cycle 3 for a few days and try to make good choices and then get back to cycle 2 on Sunday?

I am doing the same as you, Emily. I'm afraid to add any gluten in so my starches have been limited to legumes so far. I would rather not add the gluten stuff because I remember that when I do, I become famished so it seems so nice not to be starved all the time. I'm feeling good, am on C2 D8, almost halfway through C2-yay! One thing I do is exercise a lot, at least 2 hours a day so I am tired but I've always exercised so I'm afraid to tone it down. I mix things up: zumba, water aerobics, pilates, and weight lifting. I don't think I'll always sustain this intensity but since we go on our cruise in 15 days, I'm really trying to make all the progress I can.

I really enjoy reading the boards. All of the postings help me so much so thanks again.

@Emily - sounds like you might have a sensitivity to gluten. You can find gluten free oatmeal and try that. You'll have to really pay attention when you add wheat back in during C3.

Settling into Cycle 2. I am finding it's better to stick to legumes and sweet potatoes. Oatmeal seems to give me more sugar/carb cravings. Gabby thanks for the idea about the ff refried beans and eggs. Yummy.

I added a recipe to the Cycle 1 section... Parmesan-Flax Crusted Catfish. Made it last night and it turned out well (if I do say so myself.) emoticon
Satisfied a craving for breaded fried fish... but without real breading & using little (2 tsp) oil.

Thank you, NY. I do get impatient. I always want the weight off yesterday and since I'm a slow loser, I have had to learn patience. It has literally taken me 2 years to lose 20 pounds and that was working out 5 x a week often a couple hours/day. However, I was still eating carbs and I know better..sigh....

I have to say the support on these forums as I get to know all of you(ok getting to know alot about you as you keep us abreast! of your lives-tee hee) is one of the main reasons I'm able to stay on the 17DD. I tried it last summer (before I joined SP) and I felt alone and overwhelmed and quit after about a week so I was so happy when I found this board and found out many others were starting st the same time as me. So thanks to the team leaders whose dedication makes this forum possible and keep up the good work

LOL @ Gabby - I can't believe you forget to eat the fruits and probiotics! I am usually done with my fruits by 10am and wish I could eat more LOL ...I always save a yogurt for a snack at night (I think I got that idea from Linda and/or LSG) ... For me, the thing that I forget is to eat dinner! I tend to eat lunch later in the day because of my work schedule and then I'm just not hungry - at 8pm I'll start feeling hungry and think "WOW! I forgot to have dinner!" ...

@KTIS - 8lbs is a great loss! As Gabby said, that's almost 4lbs a week! Very impressive! Don't lose heart - the fact that your clothing is fitting differently already is a great testament to the hard work you're putting in! Onward! emoticon

No lemons, no frozen lemon juice, no yogurt (except homemade dip). Not a great start and I'm not shopping until tomorrow. Had to dig into the freezer for leftover turkey breast because the family is having leftover pizza and wings. I did have a piece of pizza and a couple of wings yesterday. Can't seem to be as compliant as I was on the first 4 rounds, but I did eat the pizza at 2pm not late in the afternoon :) I'll make up for it today and make it an accelerate day.

This time around on C2 &3, I'm going to try to eat 5 times a day. I gained most of my weight because I wouldn't eat all day and ate most of my calories at night. So far on this diet, I've learned to eat my bigger meals for breakfast and lunch, but I still have a habit of skipping snacks. I might write them down, but I rarely eat 2 probiotics or 2 fruit. So I'm going to make it a priority and see if it helps keep my metabolism revved up.

Congrats Kit!!!!

I lost big my first time, but I was really retaining a LOT of fluids before I started. My ankles were ballooning every day, my hands were puffy, even my face was spongy. I have photos so I can see the changes.

So the big loss wasn't really fat weight, it was water weight. Once I was eating much more cleanly, my losses have been much more typical. So don't compare yourself, be THRILLED for that 8. I bet for round two you will have a good solid loss as well. You are so close to reaching your goals!

Gabby,
I agree, 8 pounds is a lot for me. I see the higher losses of these other people but I know I have never been a fast loser so I will be patient. I am fitting in some pants that were tight so slowly I am getting smaller but 22 days until vacation so I'm hoping a little more so my clothes fit me even better because I bought clothes last fall in anticipation of losing more but I do well under pressure so bring it on emoticon

You and the others really do inspire me. I can't imagine the progress when you've gone through the whole first round. I haven't touched any chocolate yet but that is typically one of my go to foods. We can all do it!

@Ktis - 8.6 lbs? Congrats - that's a lot!!! Do the math. You lost like almost 4 lbs. per week!!
I lost 7.6 and I have a lot more to lose than you and should have lost more. ( I had a few lapses with dark chocolate LOL). Your weight loss is going to slow down. remember, it's not a fad diet but a healthy eating plan.

So onto cycle 2 this morning. I only lost 8.6 pounds on cycle 1. I was hoping for a little more but I'll take it since I hadn't lost any weight for quite a while. Clothes are fitting a little better, I feel a lot better and am still psyched so those are good signs. I haven't missed starchy food and could easily just stay on c1 but don't want to plateau so I probably will add legumes and possibly brown rice. I'm still thinking I want to stay gluten free for now.

Awesome. Thanks to you both. I love them too but yes, have to watch the salt.

Yes, soy beans are good for c2. I always have to watch for the amount of salt I put on them. Love them for a snack though!

@Emily:

I just reread the chapter on C@ last night, and soy beans are OK on C2.

@Gabby and LSG: Thanks for the tips.
I had oatmeal for breakfast and found it kept me pretty full all morning long. The beans at lunch also helped me feel more satisfied. I will definitely keep monitoring how I feel after certain foods because I do think I have some carb sensitivity.

Is edamame ok in Cycle 2? I don't have the book here at work but perhaps it is a cultural exception?

@Emily and Bonnie - since LSG answered one question I'll give you my biggest tip - Keep a food diary. See how your body reacts when you add back in certain foods. For example, you may discover that you have a sensitivity to gluten. I'm not a big oatmeal person so I didn't discover it until I added wheat back in during C3. Some people reported in C2 that if they ate oatmeal for breakfast they were hungrier all day. Some said rice didn't agree with them. If you are sensitive to carbs then certain ones will prevent you from losing weight. I find I lose more if I limit my starches to legumes and yams.

@Emily - spelt berries are OK

B=eggs scrambled with cott cheese/ 1/2 grapefruit
S=orange
L=portabello pizzas
D=salad with a little roast chicken
S=yogurt

I made it through my first C1, woo hoooo!

Who would have ever thought that one day I'd wake up all excited about having a bowl of oatmeal! Well, that day is today and I get to have oatmeal, hooray!

The carbs were really calling my name the second half of C1 too - but it was more for bread than sweets. That's big for me, since I definitely have (had?) a sweet tooth before.

I'm not Gabby, but the BEST way to determine a serving is to read the container. I make the 2 serving recipe on the canister and split it with dd. There is also a 1 serving in the microwave recipe.

And my advice is to think of c2 as being c1 on odd days and c2 on even days.The important thing is to write it down so you don't forget. :D Just think c1 - one is an odd number, c2 - an even number. Have fun!

Gabby,
I am on day 16 if C1- any advice before I start C2? And I also would like to know if 1/2c of oatmeal is dry or uncooked for the portion. This has been the easiest diet for me (so far), I'm not a great veg eater and I do love meat, I haven't felt hungery or deprived. Thaknks.

Oh and @Gabby... I had to laugh re: the bakery section. I was in the grocery store the other day and I swear all the pastries and bread were talking to me! "Eat me" they said. I had to make a beeline for the produce section. LOL

OK will do! :)
I am excited to eat beans. I have a few cans in my pantry. Black beans would go really well with the salsa chicken I had planned for tomorrow's lunch. emoticon

Also I have a can of butter beans. How do you prepare them? Heat and serve?

And is the serving size for the oatmeal 1/2 cup cooked? (or raw)
And do you think spelt berries are ok? They are a whole grain.

Sorry for all the questions! LOL!
