Did my 5K November 3rd - 31 minutes and 53 seconds...I do so much better running outside then I do on the treadmill, with the weather turning cooler up here in Minnesota I will be on the treadmill more often....working on increasing my speed on the treadmill (I think I'm just too comfortable on the treadmill!) emoticon

Last Saturday (11/05) I ran the Blackbird 5K in Brandon, MS. It was especially fun because the race course went through my neighborhood. I've only been running for 6 months so this is all still new to me. I had not had a chance to train as diligently for this race as I had for the other two I've run in so I didn't expect a very good time. But I actually finished 30 seconds faster than the last one, at 38.07! I was thrilled! Next target, the Turkey Day 8K in Madison, MS on Thanksgiving.

I just ran a twilight 5k where they lit the course with luminarias. I wanted to run under 45 minutes and did it in 39. I walked part of the last mile but it felt damn good to run across the finish line and hear the beep!!!!!

Made it through week 1of my training and ran my Trick or Treat Trot today. I made it in 38 min. (I had to walk an extra couple of minutes to make the mileage work out). I rode my bike to the park, rode around the course to check my mileage, then rode back home. Ended up with a 7 mile bike ride on top of the running.

I'll be running my 5K tonight! I was hoping to find an actual race in my area to run but no luck so it will be just me and my music at the park. My last run I actually made it to 3.5 miles so I'm hoping today will be no problem. Please stay away rain!!!!

I "wogged" my first ever 5k yesterday at age 56! I actually made a mistake and signed up for this Virtual 5K when I wanted to sign up for the 5K the weekend of Dec 3rd. I just started my training... But I kept saying go very slow, you can make this... and well I went very, very slow...46 minutes but after only two weeks thought that was a great start. At least I know I can finish. So now my goal for the Jingle Bell Run is going to be under 40 minutes.

Upcoming Races:

Nov 8,2014 - 5K Westerville OH Rotary
Dec 6,2014 - 5K Jingle Bell Run - Columbus OH

PRs:
Oct 19,2014 - 5:28:42 First Marathon - Columbus OH

Ran my 5k! Beautiful day for the run!

I like that you are running the Trick or Treat trot. What day speifically are you planning to run it?

I was going to do mine on the 30th of October.

I plan on running it in 35 minutes. I ran my last 5k in 38 minutes. I want to beat my time.

Care for a little competition?

My goal is to run this 5k in 36 minutes or less. This morning I ran my usual 3 miles in 38 minutes, a new record for me. I am feeling really confident that I will be able to give myself that extra push the week of this virtual 5k and do this in 36 minutes.

I am more succesful if I have a deadline as well. When I have something to aim for, I am more motivated.

I have joined the Trick or Treat trot to keep my running and fitness level active. I have run a total of 3 5ks in the last three months. I need to schedule more to keep motivated. I will be going the gym tonight to do some running. I gotta keep beating my previous time.

I plan on finishing the trot in 35 minutes

HI Everyone!
I signed up for the virtual because I have been slacking.

My name is Sheila and I have two pre-school kids (2.5 and 4.5). I joined Spark in early 2009 and lost ~60 pounds.

I did a Couch to 5K program in early 2010 and got myself up to "wogging" (walk/run) a 5K last summer. In early 2011, I decided to train for our local 1/2 marathon, which I completed in late July. Since then, I have been fairly lazy. I did our local Breast Cancer 5K in September, but that is the only thing I have done (with the exception of a half dozen training runs here and there).

I have discovered that I am very faithful if I have a deadline to my goals, so this will make me run more frequently to get my time down. Both official 5K's that I have completed, I did in ~33 minutes. My goal for this one is 30.

What if you fail?
You will.
Then, you move on.

Ok the only way to get going with my running - is to get going............... so here I am joinin up for the 5k running program. I did it before and can do it again.
I started running abou a year ago ============ ran in 3 5k races and improved my time each time I ran. My best time was a 37 .14 5k finish. Very good for me. But then I got summer bronchitis and didnt run for about 2 months ----- then summer came and I ran very little. Now Im starting up again and WOW - Im back to square one ---------------- like starting all over again. But I am starting - which is the good news.................. and here I am taking that very first step.

ok so ------------ out ot take that first step...................... emoticon

I will say that in my heart of hearts I believe that running is a good health thing but not necessarily a fat burner.................... strength training is the fat burner. Im running for general health - but will take any fat loss as a real bonus.

Be fit - healthy - and toned

THAT IS AWESOME!!!!!

CONGRATS!!!!!

I have finished the training program not too long ago. I got to that point of running for 35 minutes straight and I felt scared. I got up and tried anyway and to my surprise, I was able to do it! I am a believer in this program. It has worked for me.

I know that you will do just fine for the trick or treat trot. I am doing it as well and I am excited. I hope to finish in 35 minutes or less, but it will take some work on my part.

Good Luck to you!

Hi there! I'm so excited, I have to tell someone. the virtual 5k I'm scheduled for is not until the end of October. But a local church had a Charity 5K yesterday, so I decided to use it as one of my 3 training days of the week. It was one of the days I was supposed to run for 35 minutes with no walking.I have been procrastinating doing this because I didn't think i could go that long without a walking break.. But I did it!!!! I ran the course in 30.32 minutes, with no walking breaks. I won 1st place in my age group (it was a small race, so probably only 4 women in my age group, but hey-). I am excited!!!
The last time I ran a 5k was 2009 or so. I was at the Chiropractor with a bad back a week later, so I haven't done one since. I think I ran it in over 40 minutes then, and did a lot of walking. Yesterday, after the race , I was very careful. I kept moving, but took short breaks to ice my back and today I feel pretty good.
So - the Sparkpeople "Running your way" conditioning plans work!
I'm excited to see what I can do at the end of the month! Best of all, I just celebrated my 51st birthday Thursday. This race was just the boost I needed!
Best wishes to all of you on the team! You can do it!

I strained a calf muscle in Week 2 of training. It took me 9 days to get back on track. I ended up canceling out of the virtual 5K I'd originally signed up for and signing up for a week later, because I wanted to follow the training protocol.

I'd recommend seeing how long it takes you to recover, then making a decision on whether you need to reschedule to fit your own circumstances.

Okay, I was walking down the street (of all things) the day after I posted, and hurt my leg. I've been taking it easy (heat, massage), but hope to take a longer walk today and then start the training program on Monday. Should I quit and re-start the virtual 5k later? I'm not sure how these virtual races work... but I'm pretty sure now I won't make it for the October 31 date. I still want to be able to run a 5k, but don't think I'll be able to do it on this schedule. Advice?

I like running only after I've been doing it for a while but I love this program. I can't wait to start day 1 of week 2! I hope the 5k won;t interfear with my physicalt test I have to take in november as well. As long as I do it about a week before I should be good!

I hope this is the right way to post... I joined SP in February of this year, and because of my crazy life (much traveling to places without gyms and with lots of restaurants) have been on & off.

I'm not athletic. I was that girl whose GPA was ruined by PE, whose PE teachers gave up on me, and whose classmates never wanted me on their teams. This year (I just turned 56) I'm trying to undo all the damage. For the FIRST time, I have joined a gym and stuck with it (mostly). I've gone from walking 50 minutes on the treadmill and being proud of it, to being able to jog a bit. Yesterday I was able to use the treadmill to jog one kilometer, walk one, jog one, and walk one. It took me 40 minutes, but I was really proud of myself! Never in a million years did I think that I could do this! So far my asthma hasn't been acting up at ALL.

There's a 5k race for women here in Montevideo, Uruguay, at the end of this month. I don't think I can get to the point of being able to jog the whole way... but when I saw this on the SP site, I thought, "Why not?" If following this plan helps me get better, I haven't lost anything. Maybe there will be another race later, and I'll be that much closer to being able to do it.

So here I am, very much a NON-athlete, working on my very first 5k race... but not knowing when or whether I will actually be able to do it. Yes, I need all the encouragement I can get! But I also need realistic advice.

Thanks,
~Rosalinda

I am there with ya. I am 26 as well and have always been an on and off runner. Cross country in high school and I stuck with running some through college. I had a baby almost 6 months ago and I am trying to start running again. I picked this program because I tend to always just go out and try to run 3 or 4 miles like the old days. Little does my mind realize, I am out of shape and about 20lbs heavier so those miles are not so easy! Good luck with your training!

Hi!! My name's Nicole. I'm 26. I've been an on and off runner since high school. Last year I suffered jumper's knee and had to stop running. Now I really want to get back into it so this 5k program seems like a nice gentle way to do so.
I'm looking forward to training and sharing motivation with my fellow Sparkers emoticon

yes I did sign up for the 5k running trick or trot race. I started this week walking/jogging at the gym after work. 1 mile is 22 laps around the track. Tuesday night I did 1.5 miles or 36 laps around the track. I decided to walk 1 lap then run 1 lap and went clear up to 5 laps of walking then 5 laps of running. I did however reach 6 laps of walking but only 2/6 laps for running. My total time was 32 minutes.

So my goal for Thursday night is to complete laps 1-6 of walking and laps 1-6 of running, maybe this time starting at 6 laps then down to 1 lap.

I will take your suggestion. I will maintain my running regiment and start part of the 10K program.

Auroramillet, if you start a new program you will be moving backwards. What I suggest is that you just keep repeating the last two weeks of your training then add 5 more min. or you could start a few weeks into the 10k training program.

I am doing well with my training. But, I am almost done with the 5 week program. I need to keep up my running to make good time for the Virtual 5K but, I don't think I should re-do the 5 week program. Maybe I should start the training program for the 10K until the Trick or Treat Trot.

Hi ! This came at the perfect time for me. I am going to a convention the last week of October, and there is going to be a 5K on the second day. I want to run it, but I haven't run a 5K in many years. The last time I did, my back went out. So, I am using the 5K you way plans to get ready! Good Luck with your goals, everyone!

Started Week #2 of training and was able to do the 4 minute running intervals with no pain in my knees. Need to work on breathing!! I do fine during the running but when I switch to the one minute walk interval I am so out of breath until the next running interval. Any suggestions or will this get better as I train? emoticon

Hi all! I'm Adoma, from London, England. I joined this program because I have always really hated running outside, I think from fear of people watching me and seeing me stop when I get winded! I know that is something I need to get over. I'm doing this to prove to myself that I can do it! I've only done W1 D1 so far, and I absolutely loved it. It was perfect weather too, sunny but breezy. I just went round and round the park though: still working on that fear of people watching me run on the roads. By the end of the 5 weeks, I WILL be pounding those pavements! :)

Hi Team
I have run a few 5k's before but it's been a few years. It's amazing how tough it is to run in the beginning but what a great feeling when you improve. I enjoy running better than walking to get my exercise. Good Luck to everyone and enjoy yourself.

I finished my first 5K in 43 minutes and I am running another 5K at the end of September as well as the trick or treat trot in October.

I am aiming for 38 minutes for the next one and 35 minutes for the Trick or Treat trot.

Eventually, I would like to be able to run a mile in 10 minutes and hopefully do a 10K someday.

Hi! My name ins Karen and I am 47 (48 later this month) and the mother of 2 daughters ages 17 and 20. I have been on SP for a little over a year and have lost 40 pounds and feel so much better. I have been stuck trying to lose the last 5 pounds so about a month ago I decided to see if I could actually run. I haven't run since high school and I hated it then. I started with a little over a mile and found I really enjoyed it. I joined the 5k to give myself a reason to keep pushing. Today I ran the entire 3.1 miles without having to walk. Now I need to focus on improving my speed. Since I am not a runner, I don't know what a good time is. I know this race is about just finishing but I like to have goals. Can anyone tell me what a good 5k time would be?

Hi Franny! Great job on day 1!!!

Congrats on keeping going with it, even though you don't love it, maybe it'll grow on you with time? I know it has for me. I feel so strong and powerful when I can run (maybe because I couldn't before so it's a huge accomplishment for me)

So many new faces! Welcome to the 5k running program .... I did my first day yesterday and it went pretty good, I'm in the don't mind running but don't love it group; trying to learn to love it as its pretty much my main form of exercise while my toddler sleeps.

Hello everyone!

My name is Kelli, and the Trot will be my first 5K. Every year, my city hosts a marathon and half marathon, but the entry fees are not college-kid friendly. Mostly, I'm doing the 5K run to prove a point. Not the best reason, but hey, it's motivating!

Hi! My name is Heather. I joined the Trick or Treat Virtual 5K because for years I have been on a "I hate running" kick...dreaded everytime I had to run and hated every minute of it because I'd hyped it up so bad in my head. Then, this summer I went on military training for 2 weeks...and found a beautiful area to run in while I was there. That's when I discovered running isn't so bad! So, to further my "running is actually FUN" mentality, here I am!

Hello!
I was supposed to be doing the Susan Komen 3 Day next month, but due to difficulties with my teammate, will not be going. We did raise close to 10K as a team, so I consider it a success! I ran a 5K last year, and the year before, but my training has all been walking recently, so I am looing forward to training for the Susan G Komen 5K in October, as well as this one at the end of the month. My goal is to beat my last race's time!

Yeah, I'm running alone. My son is 2 years old so I don't think he'll be a le to help me. Lol I don't know anyone else at my running level. They're either way ahead of me or way behind me. But it's fine because I'll be concentrating too much on getting centered on my music to pay attention to other people. I'll probably try to find a group with my pace and stick with them.

Good luck with your sept 5k! Running a whole one is a good goal, and if you don't make it there will always be more.

You will find a race to be a bit different from a training run. The excitement will help push you along.

Are you running alone? I had my son run with me (cross country member) and help encourage me along the way.

I just now signed up for this virtual race and I'm planning on doing my best to run the whole way. I've never done a 5k race before but I'm signed up for a real one mid-September and I'm on Week 3 of my training for it. I can run/walk the race easily enough but I'm pushing myself to run as far as I can and that's a lot more difficult. That's really what my training is for. However, I am a huge doubter that I'll be able to run the whole way without walking for even a minute. But I'll do my best and we'll see what happens.

So! I've signed up for this virtual race as another go at running the whole way. I have a lot more confidence thatI'll be able to run the whole way for that one. Stepping stones, ya know? Hehehe And if I somehow manage to run the whole way in mid-September, then I'll try to beat my time on the next go.

I don't want to get lazy after all this hard work after all. emoticon

Oh yeah. My name's Katie. I'm 29 years old and have a 2-year-old son. I've been overweight and obese all my life and came to Spark June 2010 to take control of my life and finally be proud when I look in the mirror. The going has been slow with lots of ups and downs but I'm super psyched and motivated about being able to run (or even run/walk) a 5k race.

Hi, I'm Susie. I finished the 5k training program in July. I'm starting half marathon training this week. I'll actually be doing a real life 5k that week so I joined in this virtual race to support my fellow sparkers!

Good luck to all in training! Can't wait to run with you all!

Hi All, My name is Krystie, I have 4 kids, we live near Atlanta, I've been on my weight loss journey since 1.1.10 and have now lost 100 pounds,

I decided to join the Trick or Treat Trot, because I haven't really ran since my last 5k in April, and I miss it and wanted to get back into running. So here I am (again) to train and have fun at the same time with the Trick or Treat trot!

Hugs!
Krystie
