I have been having a similar problem with my knees. I had to take a couple weeks off and re start a little slower, per the Dr.

When I did start back up, a few months ago, I wrap my knee when running or fast walking. Ice it after, and also I have been supplementing with Osteo Bi Flex, which seems to be helping.

Just find what works best for you & go with it. Definitely make sure you are stretching good & getting rest in between workouts.

Keep trying! You will get there. It's hard work & determination that will get you there.

Thanks for the encouragement; it really helps. I did a 40 minute walk yesterday and won't run till later; I got a glucosamine chondrointin supplement today; and I think I will take your advice, Aegishot, and do both weights and yoga/pilates. Can't hurt, right?
I told my 9-yr old grandson about doing a 5k; his eyes popped out of his head and said, "Nana, I don't think you'll win"...I told him winning wasn't important; finishing is!

I understand PAM that age can really get in the way sometimes, but I really love your energy and the desire to do this and not allowing anything to stand in your way.

On cross training activity, I personally love weights (especially a different muscles groups used in running i.e. upper body and core) as a form of cross training. Meanwhile, Yoga/Pilates are awesome as well, it keeps you well rested. So if you have 2 days cross training within the week why not inculcate the two meaning weights on one of the days and Yoga/Pilates on the other day.

Hope this helps?

Thanks for the advice; I appreciate it. I may need to supplement with glucosamine chondroitin; I forget that I'm 51 and could benefit from extra joint care. Any ideas on a good cross-training activity? I'm torn between weights and yoga/pilates.
Pam

I think resting the knees will help it a lot. For me when I started running 3 years ago, shin splints was my bane and I nearly stopped altogether, in fact what I did was stop running and rest for too long but immediately I start again 2 days into running, the pain was worse. But now I barely know what shin splints feels like. (Maybe it is not due to more use of the treadmill).

Then I constantly compressed it with a bandage and also ice it as often as possible.

With knee pains I have also been there but not while running or walking. I most feel it when doing squats, but what I do now is a day rest and when I am up again I feel it less. When I jump rope for too long sometimes or persistently, I still feel the knee pains too, other than resting I have not tried any other treatment.

Try the RICE treatment i.e. Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation. Read more about it.

Howdy!

And great advice. Gelatin is one of those little used goodies, that is so great for so many things! I make a bone broth, that has gelatin in it, and it is just so good for me!

I do not run for any great extended period of time, so I won't be of much help. I like to throw in some jog/sprints now and then, but I am really not a runner.

I have been doing more jogging in my water aerobics class. Can't even tell it. My arms get tired before anything else (they are out of the water most of the time)

Best of luck on your journey!

I need to restart running as I kinda got sidelined for same reasons... But things that helped me in the past:

New comfortable pair of shoes (this is where I am stalling now, because last show buying experience was not pleasant. So, okay, I don't need to go back to that same vendor!).

Some Beef gelatin - I buy at health food stores or online at Amazon - Great Lakes Beef Gelatin ("bovine"). Can get pork gelatin cheaper (porcine) but I don't do pork. It's a great way to supplement your soups and smoothies and helps body rebuild the cushioning aspects of your joints.

I also use a specific supplement containing glucosamine MSN and chondroiton but again, cheaper versions are available (usually containing shellfish). Mine is a shellfish-free formula as I am allergic. This formula is a bit more pricey but cheaper than surgery I guess? Not everyone is into supplements, so ask if this is something you want more info on?

Hope this gives you some ideas?

I'm a true newbie to running/jogging and 2 weeks into this program. I enjoy the running, never thought I would, and I want to continue with it. I run on a treadmill at zero incline. I want to do my first 5k on 6/22. My knees, though, good grief. If I squat down, I can hardly get up again. I understand this is a common issue with new runners, but I don't want this to sideline me. They don't hurt when I am sitting, and walking is okay. I mostly struggle with standing up and sitting down. Any advice?
