I've done this challenge before, usually at a 3.6 walk and 5.0 jog pace. But I restarted, pushing myself a little more so that I can eventually do the jog/run challenge.

Day 1 was 4.0 walk, 6.2 jog. We'll see if that lasts as we go longer jog intervals.

This is on a treadmill, 0 incline.

I walk at 3.3 and jog at 5.5. It was rough, but it's getting easier. I use a treadmill so these speeds are easier for me to change back and forth emoticon

Will it be easy, NO, but it will be worth it!

Jogging/running is a new adventure for me. Until this summer I held myself prisoner to the belief I could not run/jog because I did not know how, so I never tried. This challenge will open me to new experiences and possibilities. I am excited to become a runner!

After Week 3, I'm averaging a 12 minute mile--slower on uphills and a bit faster running down them. If I'm on the treadmill, I vary the incline by up to 2 degrees, and then the last minute, I "crank up" the speed from 5 to 5.4 mph, which always feels good.

I'll try to improve my average gradually...I entered a big 5K event in early December, and they ask your pace to know which corral to put you in...I think I said 11:35 min/mile.

I'm slow but I'm okay with that. I finish a 5K in about 45 to 50 minutes right now and I call myself a wogger. I walk and jog as my body allows. Typically when I am on my treadmill I walk at 3 mph and jog at 4 mph.

I figure we are lapping everyone still sitting on the couch and the only thing that matters is how we each feel about our own success. No need to worry about beating anybody else but ourselves.

This is a great thread. I used to do 3 miles walk/run in 30 minutes, that was my immediate goal when I was trying to get into shape. Fast forward about 10 years, and I've gained/lost/gained weight and really slowed down.

I walk between 3.5-4 and run 4 and up. My goal is to get back to 6 and increase mileage.

These posts are encouraging. I have never been a runner or jogger..but have for the first time ever been able to jog a mile without stopping (might have done this once or twice in high school) but my pace is between a 4.5 and 4.6.. my summer goal was to hit 5. Not sure if I will make it.. but as they say..slow and easy wins the race. emoticon

Im so glad I saw this!

I was trying to push myself to run at about 6, but I was getting worn out so fast! Now Im trying to stay at around 5 so I can get in a full minute. I think Im going to try to stay at this pace for now since it seems to be working for me. Ive been walking at 3.3-3.7 depending on if my shins are sore or not.

Slowing down my pace has really helped my shins. I dont feel like Im getting shins splints anymore, instead I feel as if I am getting stronger each time I try. :)

I am so glad there are more people running slower, as I am. I walk at an easy pace of 3.7 to 4.0 at a high pace. I run at a 5.0 slow pace to a 5.6 at a fast pace. I am 55 and just trying to do something other than sit all day.

Really think I need to do this program again. After that first 5K in 2012, I didn't do another until summer of 2013, and my time was only about 5 min. faster. That's so frustrating and disappointing, but I know it's my fault. Perhaps this time I'll do better for myself.

I know this is an old thread but I'm a dredger lol Does anyone walk and jog as slow as me!?! You people are so fast lol I walk at 2.5-2.7 and I jog at 3.2-3.6 .. I'm afraid to jog or go into a run at 4.0 because I feel like I can only sustain jogging at 3.6 for a minute and then I want to die lol I'm not new to cardio.. been exercising heavily for almost a year now.. down 56 pounds but seriously cannot self exert past 3.6 on a treadmill :-/ You guys must think I'm a whimp lol

Like STINAMARIE86, I'm using a treadmill. I'm in week 3, and have been doing the walk at 3.2 (usually) and the jog at different speeds (4.2, 4.4, 4.6 --even 4.8 once last week.) I did the very first session outside and only had my pedometer clock, so I have no idea how fast I'm going. I will do a 5K fitness walk this coming weekend, and am wondering how that will go.

I am using a GPS to track my training, as well! I have a pretty slow walking pace, and I'm mostly trying to quicken that. My GPS considers my walk a slow walk and for me to do a fast walk, I am basically slowly jogging (as far as my body posture), but then I believe it's saying my jog is around a 12min/mile, which seems fairly quick imo. Maybe my GPS is a tough critic.

I have been using a GPS to help me track my speed distance and time. I am up to 40 minutes speedwalking/jogging a 5k.
I am more discipline if I sign up for 5k's. I am not in it to win it, but just to finish. It's great meeting others who started off like most of us and getting great tips of improvement. And most of all I am helping a cause.

The thing I love most about running/jogging..... is that is such an individual endeavour. Although I may run with other folks, I am really only running against myself.

My husband did Track/Field in High School and it drove me nuts that I couldn't run as fast as he could (never mind that his legs are 7 inches longer than mine)....

then I realized.....
He was a sprinter (he ran 100m and 400m)
while I am more of a long distance runner (5Ks etc).

Aka, he's a rabbit and I'm a turtle.

But the important thing is that we're off the couch :)

I'm not very fast but I sure am slow!

Seriously, I try not to overthink it. I know that TODAY, I ran in the mud, got my beautiful shoes all dirty, splashed mudlets all over my cute outfit and the only thing I cared about was seeing the footprints stack up as I ran around the track!

Great run!

right now, my jog is no faster than a brisk walk but I figure that it's better than nothing. I am not a runner and may never be, but I'm working at increasing my jogging intervals in hope that one day, I'll learn to love it.

I walk/jog outside and we have nothing but hills here, so even a walk is significant.

I am doing about 46 minutes for a 3 mile run. I am now walking 2 and running 3. I walk at 3.5 and run at 4.5. I am really trying to push to get past that 3 minute run and make it 5, but endurance is my biggest challenge. I have decided to just focus on how well I'm doing rather than how much better I wish I was doing.

Wow! This is all greek to me emoticon I am a serious beginner, as in never ran before beginner. When I am on the TM I can do 4.0 for 1.5min. then walk for 1 on 3.0. I've only tried running outside once and I was way slower then that, lol. Loved reading the post though, very helpful! emoticon emoticon

I average about 12 min per mile. Sometimes it is a little less, and sometimes a little more, it just depends on the day. I wear a watch that gives you steps, miles, and your time. 2000 steps is 1 mile. It is pretty accurate ,as I have worn it in all the 5k's that I have done.

My fastest time so far is 18 minutes for 1 mile. Usually I average 22 minutes. Not fast , but I try to focus on the fact that I am actually DOING it rather than how slow I am.

I am entered in my first 5k this June and am content to know I will be able to walk the full distance, an if I manage to jog part of it that's a bonus .

In the past I would get discouraged and just give up if I wasn't making the progress I felt I SHOULD be. Now I reconize that's just an excuse to give myself permission to quit.

So, it's a lively day and I'm on the way to the park to walk, and maybe even jog a bit. It's all good.

What an eye-opener! thanks for responding everybody. I love the perspectives that we are all moving forward, at whatever speed. My fastest was 14 min mile at walk/jog. Adding cycling into the mix before walk/jog and I am around 19min /mile coming off the bike.

I ran a lot when I was younger, even then I didn't worry too much about speed. I just started my 5k program this week and my walk/jog was about 14min/mi. I just want to get the miles in.

I have had to hear this about 1000 times -- but it's really true --- we each progress at our own pace. I couldn't walk up 3 flights of stairs without becoming incredibly winded 6 months ago. But I am determined to jog/run, and I'm trying hard to listen to my body (something I've NOT succeeded in doing in the past --- hence the mindless eating when I wasn't hungry) ... yesterday I ran for 21 minutes straight (1.5 miles) ... I was in absolute amazement at first but then I allowed myself to think about the fact that I've been working toward this for several weeks now. That's the long response.

Short response: generally 15 mins for 1 mile walk/jog at 4.2 and 0.5 incline ....

My best time is 10:11 for one mile. When I did two it was 21 something. (I was out for medical reasons and just started running longer when I had to stop). But, I'm back and starting over! I usually gor from5-7 alternating sprints for 30 seconds to 1 minute at a time. Even got a little cocky and sprinted 7.5 for 1 minute! I thought I would pass out.
Trust me this is a year of working on running...I was doing three miles in 56 minutes when I started. Takes time. ;)

I have only completed day 2 of the challenge thus far. Both times that I jogged, I jogged at 12 miles/min. This was only for a minute at a time though, I may slow down when I jog for a longer period.

Week 1, Day 2: Walk 3.0, Jog 4.5
Week 1, Day 3: Tomorrow, will see if I can push it up to 5.0

Not sure how long/mile. I am getting about 1.5mile/25 minutes.
I believe this tracker divided it out at 19min/mile

11 12 minutes is what I am down to, unfortunatly Dr's orders are to stop running
I have a neck problem, (actually my spine) and we have to see how it really is.
I have to come up with another thing i like ,I love running, so this is tough.

Most days about 4.5 mph - or approx a 13/14 minute mile - however my problem is endurance. Can't seem to sustain that for more than a couple minutes, then walk, then start back running.

10-11 minutes per mile before my pregnancy. 13-15 minutes per mile during my pregnancy. Once I complete the 5k walk/jog program in January, I'll let everyone know what my minutes per mile is.

Thank you. I felt like I was losing ground instead of gaining it since my jogging time has slowed almost 1/2 mph.

When starting out running don't even worry about how fast you are running as that will come with time and paitience. What you don't want to be doing is running until you are huffing and puffing. If you are doing that, SLOW DOWN!!!!

I walk at 3.7 mph and started out jogging 5.5 mph week 1. Now I am on week 3. I still walk at 3.7, but my jogging as slowed to 5.1 in order to do the two minutes. Is this fast enough?
