I've been and still am away helping to care for my parents both of whom are veterans. Due to mostly my mom's health problems, we are unable to make it to the different Memorial day services, but being on the path to some of them we do get flyovers, which really makes Dad smile. He was a pilot in the USAF so it is kinda like a private memorial service.

Have a memorable safe Memorial Day and thank you all vets and serving members if all branches of the Armed Services. emoticon

Thank you for the beatiful poem you left on my webpage and thanks for the kind words and reminders of what today is about. Have a wonderful Memorial Day to everyone.

"A wise and frugal government, which shall leave men free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned - this is the sum of good government."

"I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them. "
Thomas Jefferson

Just a brief note on flag etiquette this Memorial Day:

The US Flag is never raised to or lowered from the "half-staff" position. It is raised to the top of the staff or pole and then, after a momentary pause, lowered the length of the flag. When the colors are retired, the flag is raised to the top of the staff or pole and then, after a momentary pause lowered all the way.

"Liberty and Union, now and forever, one and inseperable"

Libyan lawsuit filed against Sarkozy
Mon May 30, 2011 10:45AM

Two French lawyers are to take legal action against French President Nicolas Sarkozy for crimes against humanity over NATO-led military operations in Libya.

Attorneys Jacques Verges and Roland Dumas have offered to represent Libyan families that have fallen victim to NATO strikes against Sarkozy, AFP reported.

“The two lawyers are going to file a complaint in the French courts in the name of the Libyan families,” a Libyan justice ministry official Ibrahim Boukhzam said.

Verges denounced a French state led by “hoodlums and killers,” adding that he and Dumas were “going to break the wall of silence.”

Dumas has further condemned his country's actions against a “sovereign country” and said he would be willing to defend Gaddafi if he were to be brought before the International Criminal Court (ICC).

During a visit to Tripoli, Dumas and Verges accused NATO forces of killing civilians instead of protecting them.

French warplanes were the first to strike Muammar Gaddafi's forces after a UN resolution calling for the protection of Libyan civilians and a no-fly zone was passed.

Sarkozy announced the launch of military actions in Libya, backed by Western and Arab allies, on March 19.

According to the Libyan government, hundreds of civilians have been killed by NATO strikes. NATO claims that it has targeted areas under the control of pro-Gaddafi force.

(I thought I would share an email I just received. His words are far better than mine...)

Today we celebrate the 145th anniversary of Memorial Day.

This is the day where we as a nation pay respect and remembrance to those who have died while on military service in order that we may enjoy the many blessings we have as Americans. We always have and always will treasure this legacy we have inherited.

For those of you who have served with distinction; For those of you with sons and daughters currently in harm's way-- Thank you on behalf of a grateful nation. That is the most selfless act.

It is also the start of a lot of great summer events (Indy 500, Coca-Cola 600, outdoor sports, fireworks, trips to the beach etc). Unfortunately those great outdoor events also mark the beginning of the 100 deadly days of summer! Be cognizant of the insidious hazards inherent in all of these wonderful events so that you and yours stay safe and happy all summer long! We are all in this game of life for the long haul!!!

Interesting Trivia:

On Memorial Day the flag is raised briskly to the top of the staff and then solemnly lowered to the half-staff position, where it remains only until noon. It is then raised to full-staff for the remainder of the day.

The half-staff position remembers the more than one million men and women who gave their lives in service of their country. At noon their memory is raised by the living, who resolve not to let their sacrifice be in vain, but to rise up in their stead and continue the fight for liberty and justice for all.

Be Safe! Have Fun!
