I agree with both of you. What I meant was, a story so full of angst can be used politically against the war and against conservatives that support the war, is probably why they printed it.

There is no doubt that we would feel the same way should there ever come a time when we were 'occupied' by some other nation. We'd feel violated, even though they were trying to help us out.

I have read some blogs by people who live in Iraq and while they are grateful for our support they also feel that our leadership misses the main points too often. We tend to put people in office that will support our views, but they often aren't representating the native peoples views. And we often pick outright criminals. The natives know this and wonder why the Americans don't. So, I can very well see why they might resent us on a certain plane.

Speaking from both personal experience and observations, I think that anyone who has been in a combat situation regardless of in what conflict or what assignment rightfully has some angst. The taking of life on a small or a grand scale should not be taken lightly, else we become what we are fighting.

Also, most of the places where we have fought, even though we were fighting for their freedom, the local inhabitants, while often grateful for the liberation, didn't want us (or any "foreign" forces) on their homeland soil for any longer than necessary -- even our closest WWII allies, the British, while delighted for our support and rescue in their hour of crisis, grumbled about American troops being "oversexed, overpaid and over here".

Tho the article was good it was full of angst. I think that's why they printed it.

I can guess why they did.. or did you not notice the part where she mentions how the Iraqis don't want us there. Which is weird because according to my husband, when he served they loved having his unit there.

That's a very good story. No politics, which is why the printed it. I fully understand the feelings of let down once you are finally discharged. There's the feeling of freedom at last, but then you wonder 'is that all?' Takes awhile to get over that.
