Afghanistan is in far worse shape than Iraq was in 2003. They are a really long way from being able to govern themselves and defend themselves. I mean, they are even in worse shape than Pakistan is, and that's saying something. The Al Qeada know this, too. All they have to do is just hang around until we leave and then they will take over BOTH countries. And Pakistan has nuclear weapons, folks. That is what they are after. And of course, the bleeding heart liberals are playing right into their hands. Again. Just like they did in Viet Nam and TRIED to do in Iraq. Just walk away (quickly) and pretend that everything is ok. ALl in the name of letting those folks get on with their lives, and stop meddling in their affairs. Never mind that we caused most of their misery in the first place. (Well, us and the Russians) Now that we have a Commander in Chief who hasn't a clue how to run this war, things will continue to go badly. We have a man who has never really done anything who thinks he can run everything. Day by day, he proves that he is no superman. No superhero. Just a fallible man, with the same insecurities, the same shortcomings as all the rest of us. His vision of utopia is starting to look like a vision of hell, even to the coolade drinkers, who are, by the way, starting to wake up.

Well, IT'S ABOUT TIME!

The deadline that isn't, or is, or may be...

"I do not believe we have locked ourselves into leaving," Clinton said. "It is the best assessment of our military experts ... that by July 2011 there can be the beginning of a responsible transition that will of course be based on conditions." (Secretary of State Hillary Clinton briefing Congress on tha President's Afghanistan policy)

Also...I think it even goes beyond running our cars. Our defense runs on oil as well. So knock out the oil...no defense. Not that we'd need it anyway....

Here's my other conspiracy theory... Should America fall to her enemy (God forbid!), it won't be because of war on our turf...no...the enemy will just walk in and take over. We have become a nation of wimps (or it'll be b/c BO sold us to the enemy!)! Just the other day, a co-worker went on and on about how ridiculous war is (and it is...but it's an unfortunate reality), stupid, a waste of time and resources, etc.... Blasted America for being in wars, "Bring our men and women home", etc... I simply told her she could feel that way, but unfortunately, the enemy doesn't! Ironically, she is a HUGE Obama fan and had said this before he announced more troops in Afghanistan! Wonder what she thinks about him now!

I think you are on to something, Tenniswhiz! It's not a new idea, of course. But as long as we are totally dependent on fossil fuels for our very existence, we DO have to protect our sources. At least, until we figure out how to run our cars on windpower, or some other renewable energy source. Hey, I know, how about this idea? Hydrogen? It's in plentiful supply, and it's FREE! It can easily and cheaply be made from water! Water is two elements, one is a fuel and the other is a combustion promoter. (How they ever got together, I don't know) Split them apart and you could release the oxygen. We can always use more oxygen, right? When you burn hydrogen, what comes out the tailpipe is water vapor, since the hydrogen recombines with the unused oxygen all it leaves is H20. Simple, yet elegant. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a way for the giant petrochemical corporations to make their megabucks. Not yet, anyway. So, we have to protect our oil supplies, and that's why we are in two wars.

MajorDad... EXACTLY! I've been saying the same thing...how he is copying what Bush did which he earlier criticized!

As for the rest of what you said...keep in mind, he lies like a dog. He'll come up with some other story of why the troops CAN'T come home. And if he withdraws those troops in Iraq (let's hope to some degree, this is a lie...SOME presence has to stay), I fear Iran will move right in! Sometimes, I HOPE he is lying! No war is good...but unfortunately, the enemy seems to think it is for their unjust cause. I don't doubt we need to snuff out the Taliban and I didn't doubt we needed to invade Iraq...I believe for reasons other than what we were told by the Bush administration. The public can't handle the truth. I believe the truth is...can't let oil fields get in the wrong hands. Leave the Middle East alone and radicals will be in control of them. Control Saudi Arabia's oil fields (70& of the world's supply) and now you have world power.

That's my conspiracy theory and I'm stickin' to it!

Agree with John McCain that the President got it half right tonight. He is sending (at least most of) the troop increase the generals (he appointed) asked for and seems to intend to do this "surge" fairly fast. He screwed up, IMHO, by essentially saying that, while the troops will arrive by early 2010, they will start to leave by mid-2011. That gives the surge about 12 months to succeed, and gives Al-Queda/Taliban the option to keep a relatively low profile for 12 months, let us withdraw, and then come back in force. Even CBS's Bob Scheiffer had trouble with that part of it. It's like declaring that we would withdraw our troops in WW II after mid-1943. In any event, today is the day that the war in Afghanistan became Obama's war...Interestingly, he (and other Democrats) are now acknowledging the success of the surge strategy in Iraq that they widely decried in 2007 and using it as a model for this strategy.
