It's funny how different things work for different people. If I concentrate on my breathing, I panic, because I'm short of breath. If I just run, listening to my ipod, or just making it through mini goals, I can usually do it.

That's awesome!! I ran my first ever continuous mile a week ago. Sadly I have been sick since then so I haven't pushed myself beyond running a continuous half-mile this week. But, I am looking forward to doing a mile several more times then working up to continuous 1.5 miles! I use the same motivation tactics as you...running to the next stop sign, light post, etc. and focusing on my breathing (I find this is key).

It is great to see this message and very motivational! I am beginning week 3 and think running two minutes is tough!

Way to go! I don't know what came over me. I had just viewed pictures of someone who had been over 300 lbs and was now on top of a mountain in outdoorsy clothing, looking like a total jock. Then I saw the 5 k challenge and thought, if she can do it, I can try. I got out the dog's new leash & embarked on training day 1. The 1st couple run minutes were fine, but at the end of the 4th, I thought I might puke. That only lasted for a minute or two. The feeling good has lasted for hours. By the way, the dog kept running back & looking at me like " What's going on? What's up? Is everything okay? What are you doing?"

Thanks for all the kind words and tips, everyone! I did it again twice, and today I went a little further =)

I think one of the most challenging things for me is until I get to the point where my body is aching and I have to focus on moving and breathing properly I'm just bored. Maybe once it warms up and I get outside it'll be nice to listen to music and jog... I live in DC and was thinking that it'd be cool to jog around the monuments.
Until then (which should be soon) maybe I'll try audiobooks! I've used audible before. I like to watch TV but that's only doable on the treadmill and usually there's nothing good on anyhow.

LOL--I'm an audiobooks. No music. I listen to whatever latest book I've got on my ipod. It keeps me from paying attention to the time. emoticon

Congratulations on your first mile! I managed my first mile in January and it felt so rockin awesome! I'm now up to 1.5 miles w/o stopping (3x in a row now!) I always push to the next mailbox, then next street sign et and its amazing where that brings you! Also I've found I do so much better with the right music on my iPod! I'm totally a music runner! How about you, music or no music? If so, what songs are on your playlist?

Congratulations!!!!!! That's just fantastic, I seriously do not know anyone who runs that doesn't remember their first mile and what an absolutely HUGE accomplishment it is. See you at the finish line! Marta

PS - you might try writing down somewhere in a journal exactly how you feel and use it as motivation later. I did that with my first 3 mile run 11 years ago and it continues to motivate me when ever I go back to read it. Regardless, congrats, you rock!

That is so fabulous! I can't wait until I can do that, too.

I did 2 miles total on the Week 3, Day 1 program, but to do a mile continuously, WOW!

Congrats on your first mile no stop. I know I couldn't believe it when I got there. Keep going slow and steady and you'll get to that 5K mark.

P.S. no shame in walking a bit when you need to. Keep putting in the effort and replication gets easier and easier.

Right on!

I can relate - I am still at the run 1 minute level 4 times, but I can do it, and that's amazing to me.

I've never in my entire life jogged a mile without stopping. Not even for the fitness tests in middle and high school. Today I did! It was minute by minute (I started saying I'd go to 5, then just one more, then just one more... then just to 10...) I was going to stop at 10 as a nice, even number.. but then I was only .1 miles away and so I pushed myself and made it!!! 11 minutes!!!!!

I don't know if I'll be able to do it again tomorrow. 2 weeks ago I made it to a half mile at a slightly slower pace and wasn't able to replicate it until today, when I went twice as far and faster. But hopefully =) Replicate, then go further... that's my goal! Ohmigosh I can't even tell you how amazing it would be if I can make it to the 3k mark... ohhhh man I'm having grand visions. 5k!!! I want to be able to jog 5k!!!!
